5 reasons this is BETTER than a Rolex Daytona | Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Sport

  • The Zenith El Primero was one of the best looking watches released this year, but it was mired in controversy because some think it look too much like a Rolex Daytona. However, here are 5 reasons why the Zenith is its own watch, and reasons why it might actually have a leg up on the unobtainable Daytona.

    I sold my Daytona and bought Zenith. Couldn't be happier. I prefer Chronomaster in litellary every aspect. It looks cooler, has better dimensions, I like bracelet more (maybe expect the clasp ;) ), it wears better on straps, it has usable chronograph, which I actually use. No one use chronograph if you have to unscrew the pusher first... And the movement is spectacular.
    I bought two, black and white, got 15% discount. I eventually returned black one. It is so nice to buy and try a watch.

    25 years ago, I chose the Zenith El Primero 410, because it had an anual calendar and a moon phase, and 36,000 alternations. It was 1/4 the price, and Rolex was using a tuned down version of the Zenith. It was a no brained.

  • @typebflieger
    @typebflieger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    I prefer the movement and the design of the Zenith Chronomaster Sport to the Daytona. The Daytona is the ultimate symbol of the overhyped nature of Rolex. It reveals the mechanics of marketing: one actor wearing it while racing cars made people want a gaudy, blingy, modern variant of the watch that looks nothing like the one he wore back in the day. The story of the Daytona going into 2022 is about how it helps rich people identify each other. I think if you could look at modern Daytonas without the hype and exclusivity factor, they are simply nowhere near as attractive or storied as pretty much any modern Zenith Chronograph.

      @@MasterChief37 I think the Daytona and the Chronomaster Sport are both objectively above a 3861 Speedy Pro from a technical standpoint. The Speedy Pro is also priced accordingly as well and a great watch for the 6-7k price point. Now if we’re talking the 321 Speedy that’s in another class and also priced accordingly. That’s a very special watch that I’d take above any of the aforementioned.

    The centre of Zenith's 9 o'clock/3 o'clock subdials line up perfectly with the indices at 9 and 3 , this is also true for the Zenith powered Daytonas, and it looks so much better than the offset subdials on the modern Daytona. Just joined WatchCrunch and looking forward to finding my way round 👍👍

    As a watch nerd I would prefer the Zenith over the Daytona simply for the advanced movement, the looks and the date complication. Pay 30k for a daytona today is it going to be worth 50%+ in years to come, I highly doubt that.
      If we look at production figures for the two and history I think the zenith will be the winner in years to come.

This is me who owns a lot of gens like a 6263 so I am not been snooby here as I rather wear reps with the design I like rather than comprising due to its price range. Excellent video, I had to subscribe. I got the chronomaster sport about a week ago. My first Zenith. I always wanted to own a Zenith, was initially drawn towards the Defy 21 but then I happened to come across this beauty. Was lucky to get it in a day's time. Wore it the same day and went out with my buddies. Of course a few asked me if it's a Daytona which irked me a bit. Someone even mentioned that Zenith has a habit of copying Rolex watches, I didn't care to reply. I just know I got what I wanted and am really happy. It's not the case where I wanted a Rolex, I couldn't find it and I settled for a Zenith. I got it because I absolutely love it. I was never a big fan of the Daytona. I own a Sea Dweller and an OP and I love them. The only thing is the bracelet, maybe I need to get more used to it. Apart from that, it's a stunner. Thanks for the video.

    however, i am surprised that i have yet to see anyone dare (or observant enough) to point out that el primero movement has a hereditary “flaw” where the chronograph hand randomly jerks forward or backward when is stopped. this characteristic remains in the family which can be observed even in the today’s zenith models - something to ponder if you are a new to zenith.

    Say what you will, I think it’s awesome that Zenith finally updated its el primero movement and simplified much of its mechanics. However - with any cam/lateral clutch watch, it keeps me using the actual chrono function sparingly as I know I am putting micro wear and tear that will eventually lead to a routine service cost. I know it’s not that big a deal and there are lateral clutches that have been tried and tested for decades, but I feel in 2023 that every maker should focus on developing a vertical clutch mechanism instead. It’s cool watching the lateral clutch do its thing the 4x a year I might look in the back and play with it…but honestly I’d much prefer it hidden and full proof the longevity with a vertical clutch. Please LVMH, develop an in house vertical clutch chrono.

    Even those that buy the Daytona are fully aware there are many watches far superor vs the Daytona for less even at retail in objective terms... but the main reason for Rolex success is marketing..people purchase it for recognition, status, and as investment. To them, Zenith is a watch people won't recognize that will drop in value vs Daytona which everyone recognizes that increases in value...having been in the industry, I realized most people are concerned about recognition/clout over objective quality.

    Agree that. If Daytona and El Primero were the same price I would still take the Zenith but the 1969!
    By the way screw down pushers don’t make for more water resistance. What counts is the gasket. The Omega Planet Ocean Chrono
    Is tested to 600m (+20%) and it doesn’t have screw down pushers.

    • @roycedot
      @roycedot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Screw down pushers can definitely make a Chrono more water resistant. You can also use other means like a gasket. They aren't mutually exclusive. Also, the Planet Ocean has a screw in crown. Same principle.

    Zenith defy extreme is the best chronograph watch you should own.. My opinion I would have the zenithdefy extreme.than rolex daytona.the only minus is 45mm is rather to big. But it's a chronograph. Size not much a problem.

    Daytona is the most overhyped watch today. I think most people want it because they see it as an investment and that they can flip it if bought at MSRP. Lol. If taking this off the table and strictly looking at two chrono watches, Zenith is the better watch in terms of specs, looks and size.

    • @EdwardViaTomato
      @EdwardViaTomato 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's one of the most off-putting things about the Daytona. Seeing one nowadays just makes me think the wearer wants or needs their money back at some point. Its main "complication" is being a symbol of wealth, but _any_ luxury watch is a symbol of wealth anyway.

      @@EdwardViaTomato It's become more of this lately.. people buying to flip and make a profit. thank god i got my pieces before all this hype... and i bought it because i liked it and didn't look at resale value.

    Don't tell that to the Daytona Snobs. I too would buy a Daytona at retail but not from the grey market. Rolex is jewelry for the Snobs, most dont even know the history of Rolex or the Zeytona. Anyway the point here is that the Zenith is a better tool watch however speculation and the market has turn Rolex into a good investment but not necessarily a better watch.

    Only reason I'd choose a Daytona (at MSRP*) would be to sell it to a fool, and then I'd use the profits to buy a Chronomaster Sport _and_ a Blancpain Bathyscaphe.
    The chronograph isn't really a matter of utility, it's just a complication. A technical feat.

    The only thing that I believe let’s the watch down is it’s clasp. It makes the bracelet look cheap. I would have given it a push style clasp like an Omega or a hidden deployment.

    I really like the zenith chronomaster original but i feel there is too many star symbols at the dial, the crown and the clasp which makes it looks slightly cheap... i wish they had change the clasp to a laser engraved zenith branding. Change the popup star at the crown to a more subtle laser engraved star and i will buy it.

    The zenith it’s an amazing watch but not for the price they ask. The clasp and some materials on the bracelet are not premium or for the price they ask. Owning both I can’t deny the history and most of all the hype on the Daytona, but I can’t say that I’ll prefer the zenith. Not at all. It’s like comparing an Audi to a Porsche. The Audi it’s a great car…but it’s not a Porsche

    Spot on. LoL. Heirloom, only Rolex. Asking a wearer if the Rolex is fake? Priceless. Zenith history, yes. Approachability by others in the wild when wearing? Off of the charts. For extroverts. It’s just not generational. A rolie or even speedy, my son and his heir will probably recognize and know, and wear. All others? It makes the 30k ‘cheaper’ across 3 generations. Then 10k and thrown away after you die.

    Because the zenith movement was the most elegant & most compact movement on the market, Rolex Took it as their basement movement for the Cosmograph Daytona.
    The El Primero movement had a long way to go before it got to sit inside the Daytona. In the hands of Rolex’s technicians, it went through more than 200 separate modifications, leaving it with fewer than half its original components.
    Its date function was removed and an entirely new escapement was fitted, with a larger free sprung Glucydur balance wheel and Microstella regulating system. The flat hairspring received a Breguet overcoil and the frequency was dropped to keep it in line with the rest of the professional range; from 36,000vph to a more relaxed 28,800vph.

    One more thing is that the Daytona is actually a very small 40mm watch, meaning that it wears more like a 38-39mm one, super slender too. Almost feminine, definitely unisex. The Zenith looks like it would suit anyone with a 7+ inch wrist better.

    The Daytona photographs really well, but there is something about it in person that I don't like. It has a kind of cheap look. Perhaps it's just me, but I think the Zenith (which I haven't seen in person) might be more visually appealing.
