    2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 Mazda 3
    I had a very difficult time removing the rotor because on the side where it mounts to the hub, it was RUSTED!!
    I tried hitting it out with a hammer but it wouldn't budge. That lasted 30 minutes.
    Then I used a long bolt to push the rotor outward. It worked!! Watch the video to see how I did it.
    From a subscriber experience that left me a comment:
    Addison Elliott wrote:
    I came back to comment on this post because this trick is what saved me. I was working on a 2009 Mazda 3 front brakes, similar to this guy. I had tried the hammer approach, heating the hub, PB blaster and letting it sit with no avail. I thought I was going to get it when I did a gear puller on it but it ended up BREAKING THE ROTOR.
    That's when I knew that I didn't think the hammer and heat method was going to work. I bought some grade 8 bolts, washers and nuts. The only issue is that I had to tap the threads on the bolt farther since they only come like an 1" deep. After that, I used an impact like the video showed and it worked a treat. Good job!

    I love this. This is exactly how I go through with "an hour" changing brake pad and rotor procedure. Everyone told me it's a easy job and takes an hour. I would end up under the car for 1 hour just to break off one single bolt. Your video shows everything I've encounter .... except breaking the bolt. Clear cuts and no excess non-sense. No annoying music either. Keep it up.

Good job!

    That was actually very very smart now when I do hubs and if I’m trying to get rotor off I won’t have to tell customer we have to replace rotor unfortunately I never thought of that.

    This says it all. Thanks for showing the REAL way its done and not some fancy edited version. Same brakes on my Mazda 5. Hardest rotors I've ever tried to remove. Also, the bolts need to be grade 8 or they will strip and get stuck, ask how I know.

      That's Mazda for ya... great cars to drive, but till this day they have above average rust problems. They just don't use enough prevention on the mechanical parts and underside when producing their cars... I've seen more than a couple of 5/6 year old Mazda 6's with 50.000~100.000 that needed some serious work to either prevent getting worse or have to be fixed just because of rust.

    This is a great video. Great camera angles and straight to the point. Love that there is no music or useless talking. The only thing that is interesting to me is that most brake kits come with a packet of grease that you're supposed to apply to the pack of the brake pad. I noticed you didn't use any. I would highly recommend using some brake grease on the back of the pad for the sake of lubrication. Otherwise great job and great job showing the bolt trick to get the rotor off. I was trying to get mine off but it is rusted like crazy because the brakes haven't had work done in maybe 10+ years. Car is my dad's and he doesn't take care of it.

      snapping studs is usually done while the car is in the driveway and using hand tools to take the lug nuts off. If you take them off with a power tool, they will not snap usually, compared to taking them off by hand. Currently, Home Depot has a cordless Ryobi 1/2 inch impact for $99. It comes with a charger and a battery.

    Yes!!! The amount of Mazda 3 rotors I have changed and they are always like this...I hit some of them so hard i crack the rotor face off of the braking surface. I always ...always put anti seize (copper, just the flavor I keep in stock) between the flange and rotor. and half the time guys don't clean or lube the slide pins. Just because guys a shops have time limits, my shop doesn't quote on time, they slack off sometimes if they are in a hurry. Good work ( even tho the video is 3 yrs old )

    Easiest way to loosen rusted rotor to hub is to loosen all lug nuts about 2 turns drive car forward or reverse in safe area and brake hard to stop. Turning steering wheel left and right while braking is even more effective. You will hear when rotor breaks loose from hub. Very easy procedure.

      C Clamp is fine when the calper is off, but not for getting the pads backed off enough to remove a rotor with pads dragging on it. As far as gett ing the pston retracted to clear new pads, you shoulkd eb bleeding the lines anyway. Crack the bleeder valve and push the caliper in with a simple screw spreader.

    • @thefuzzypickle8277

      Because theres a proper tool for it lol

    • @hakont.4960
      @hakont.4960 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That tool is basically just a fancy c clamp. For rear calipers with a handbrake screw mechanism a brake piston tool is a good idea, but for regular calipers a regular c clamp gets the job done nicely.

    • @TheLpjoe
      @TheLpjoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Mm, Bullshit, I used my c clamp yet again this morning to compress the caliper before removal while doing a disassemble for a wheel bearing and was saving the pads. If the pads are already junk as well as the rotor, no harm no foul.

    Dont let Angle fix your car folks . Dont used a hammer , pullers or heat folks not even a wrong puller . and dont do what this guy had done . Make plans for a week end to do something like this . The long term is best . Prespray every part with penetrating oil and let it set , Check it once in a while and repeat until the rusted area looks wet this may take a day or two but it will work and you wont damage anything . Once it stay looking wet then you can try to tap the rotor off with a oak block and a Ball ping hammer . In some cases you may try to hit the rotor between the the lugs with a brass hammer . Hitting a rotor as hard as you can wont budge it at all. All that will do is make you mad and fk things up . Place the block against the rotor and hit on that while rotating the disk . If it still wont come loose then respray and let it set again and start gain the next day . You should respray the area once every hr just a light coats . It's just a wast if you just let it drip . You can also use diesel fuel in a spray bottle . That works vary good also . I have yet to damage any part on a car . Take it as it is worth from a A&P mechanic . If a person had a vibrating hammer @ 50.000 rapid motion at about 15 fp of torq would be nice .

      Jeff Mullinix thank you for the comment. It’s nice when someone comments when they say they know what they would do in this repair. But it would great if you had a video of all your car work so the world can learn. I only see a video of you playing with your toy.
      Some of my comments are from certified mechanics that mock my work. They tell me everything I do wrong. And then they tell me how great they are and how many years of experience they have. I tell them, I don’t give a shit. It don’t matter, until I see a video, their words don’t mean anything. They also say they are better than me. I never said I am better than anyone. I asked every one of them to put up their videos to show me how it’s done. Not one ever did.
      So you are telling everyone that I should not fix their cars. Because you think I am doing it wrong.
      You say you are an A&P mechanic, so let’s see what you can do on video.
      Please don’t be like the other guys that all can talk and type.
      Make those videos so you can show me the right way. Prove to me you are a great mechanic. Otherwise, don’t be commenting and have nothing to show for it. Action talks and bullshit walks. I respect your comment but you insulted me. Point is, I got the job done.

      take a new, unused ball or roller bearing and smack it in the axial direction with a mallet as hard as you can, preferably a couple of times and then look for peening marks on the bearing surfaces...
      note that because he's hitting the edge of he disc, there's a nice lever acting on...everything...in the wheel hub assembly, all the joints and even the steering rack...
      If it's not coming off because of rust, you either use heat or cut it off with an abrasive disc. Bashing things with a hammer is not always the right way ;-)

    • @AKAtheA
      @AKAtheA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not really...you severely underestimate just how much force does a 2lb hammer exert on a hard metal surface once it hits. It's only for a split second, but it's well enough to overcome the tensile strength even of the hardened bearing races.
      Unless you drive into a large pot hole or into a curb at considerable speed, driving the car doesn't come close to the punishment that hammer dishes out.
      You can put 100k miles on a front bearing and it will still feel and work much better then a new one that took a few hits from the hammer.
      Just don't beat things with a hammer unless you actually want to either reshape or break them.

    I had one pain of a time getting the rotors off my 10' Mazda 3. I thought about trying this method but didn't want to chance bending the mounts. What worked for me on the 2nd rotor after a day working on the first one was to use penetrating oil like its going out of style. I bought a 3lb hammer from Harbor Fright and hit it from behind for one rotation. Then spray the whole hub front and back. Repeat that process. The banging helps the oil seep into the rust. Popped right off after 15 minutes or so. The entire inside rusted rotor hub area was coated in oil.

    ehh this is quite cringy,
    1. should have used a torch to get the stuck disk off, cause's less damage to the bearings and shaft.
    2. should have cleaned the brake caliper bolts with wire wheel to remove the black crap off them then grease/lube
    3. should have used a anti squeal paste on the contact points of the pads / copper grease is fine if you dont have any other.
    4 should have cleaned the pad carrier either with wire wheel or light file if corroded.
    other than that great job, and thank god you use axle stands.

This guy does not have the proper technique. He should have used a big sledge hammer or just a heavier hammer and hit just once, but very hard to THE BACK of the brake rotor. Not the front.

    This channel just showed up randomly in a horizontal list of similar channels (all of which I already watch). I chose this video to watch because it's something I've seen plenty of times on other channels (and done on my own vehicle) so I'm very familiar with the process. This gave me an effective way to evaluate whether this is a channel I might want to continue to watch.
    I was extremely impressed with the excellent level of videography, lighting and editing. Really well done! Also very humorously done, which brings the human side of this work into focus very clearly as well. :) I was also impressed with the effort that went into categorizing videos in the Playlist, something I always look at in order to followup with other videos in the came category. The only thing I might have changed is alphabetizing the categories rather than having them listed randomly. Also, if you look at something like Mazda Repairs there's a bunch of other videos which seem to have no connection whatsoever (although I'll have to check out some of them to make sure that's correct).

    Keep up the great work! You make great videos with efficient editing. Sometimes I cringe at the mechanic world. I feel it's an area filled with some of the most egotistical, negative, and hard headed people I have ever met. If it's not their way, it's wrong. They pickup something from someone who is probably just as arrogant as they are, and all the sudden that's the only right way to do something. Everyone not doing it that way is dumb. They are just feeling the need to be better than other people, but deep down the truth is most likely known. It seems like most of these people don't even think about what is happening and the whole picture....they have just learned a method from someone, and suddenly that is the law. This mentality is so nonconstructive it is insane. I cannot wait for this way of thinking to phase out and be replaced by open thinking minds....like it will be. Good luck you hard headed bastards. Looking forward to more videos from you Fix It Angel! I know you won't let these negative people stop you from thinking for yourself!

    More anti seize between the hub and the rotor that way you can slam on the brakes and the rotor can cut those studs off cleanly and then the wheel can fall off too. hell! even put it on the stud bolts that way you can coke bottle them before they reach torque. good job ACE!

    Damn them rust big flakes. Since, I live within the rust belt (Midwest) I am fortunate that my rotors came off but the rotors is a lot more rusty than that Mazda rotors. Unfortunately, the caliper bracket bolt was a bear to loosen up...did anger management and hope that bolt isn't stripped. Now, I have to do the driver side *sighs* and it isn't budging ( the bolt). Tomorrow the next cold day to attempt.
    Great video and learned some mechanic hacks the next time I run into those problems.
