This game has fantastic atmosphere. near silence with just the hum of quiet-running engines, sonar pings, and subtle eerie music, all sporadically interupted by muffeled explosions.
Honestly, the sonar pings will haunt your dreams after a good long playsession of this. Reminds me of back when I played DDR a lot. Just dream of arrows.
Take a small word of advise from a retired P.O. from the R.A.N. when you have evaded the torp don't continue dropping noisemakers, you will end up dragging the torp back to you.
I have to say, I never could have imagined such aggressive maneuvering from such massive underwater vessels -- the sheer scale and intensity, mixed with the graceful size and incredible suspense was breathtaking. If there was such a thing as dogfighting underwater, this was it.
So you started off by Red Octobering a Sierra-class and then, when you discovered the Typhoon you found her with her nose against the ice, unable to surface, having been (perhaps ironically) also Red Octobered.
Avalon304 I actually think one of Magz's first torpedoes got her. He launched two at the first Sierra, one hit and the other just ran straight by, heading generally towards the Typhoon.
Likely when the first torp hit the Typhoon, the AI attempted an emergency surface. I've had this happen when I damaged an Oscar's propulsion and it surfaced. I executed it with a Harpoon missile XD.
This is a fantastic game, love it. It has so much potential, and the devs are working hard on making the Subsim community happy. It is gonna be a winner for many years.
Magz - If you are within approximately 180 feet of the bottom, your crew will instantly retract the towed sonar array. So your towed array often wasn't out, during this mission, while you were so close to the bottom. When you have a sonar contact, when this is the case, you can see that your towed array's SNR is at 0. Only real indicator that the towed sonar isn't running, since no 3D representation atm.
By very popular request, Welcome to Cold Waters, The new Submarine lite-simulation by killerfish games. Honestly I have struggled to put this game down since getting it, It is absolutely fantastic. So in today's mission we shall be slipping below the ice sheets of the Arctic Ocean as the commander of the Los Angeles-class attack submarine, USS Far Canal SSN-744. Our mission, To sink the mighty Typhoon class Ballistic missile submarine and end her escorts in the Cold Waters of the north. I hope you enjoy! If you would like to help support the channel, Please consider donating a small amount on Patreon: www.patreon.com/MagzTV
just as a hint that I've learned by watching a former sonar operator from a sub after he retired from 20 years of naval service..... active sonar on a torpedo that you launch screams "SHOOT YOUR WEAPONS HERE" from the moment it launches..... passive sonar on the Mk. 48 torpedo can still be just as effective, it just doesn't give your position away immediately to your target group.
The vibes i get from watching this after reading Red Storm Rising, by Tom Clancy, that features the Los-Angeles Class USS Chicago (SSN-721) is fantastic. More of these magz, i beg you!
Great video Magz, would definitely love to see more of this. Awesome commentary throughout too as per usual. That torp escape though...was abit too close. Thanks for bringing this to us.
I've found that setting my torpedoes to activate closer to the sub (putting the launch marker on the map closer to yourself) tends to yield a greater chance of them acquiring a target, since they have more time to search for them. That said, if you're using active sonar on the torps, it gives the enemy more time to dodge.
11:00 that torpedo going in circles was probably air dropped, if that was not on the ice cap. most russian subs (when they are ai) dont use circle pattern a lot.
it's probably worth taking into consideration that Cold waters is a cold war gone hot scenario if i remember correctly. certainly that could have been reason enough for the soviets to step up production on the sierra class sub.
MagzTV you sent torps on S1 set to activate PAST the target. The torpedo is supposed to search approaching target, which should be in its search cone. I.e. you're supposed to activate a torp 1 mile or further out of the expected location of the target by the time torp arrives there. The closer you can activate to the target and still detect it in the transducer the better (gives target less notice).
Magz, let the torps arm themselves a little way before the enemy sub plot on the map, it's possible that if the enemy sub closes range, they can bypass your torp, plus if it arms too close but has to make a lot of course change, you can end up just circling the sub instead.
Yes please Magz more Cold Waters. Is it possible to split a ship or sub in two with repeated torpedo hits all around the circumference of a specific point on ship or sub?
not entirely sure, but... I think 2 of those Sierra's killed themselves with their own torps, and I think that maybe one of Magz's originally fired off torps, or maybe one of the Sierra's wildfire torps damaged the Typhoon. Just goes to show, friendly fire isn't XD
Wonderful video. Also, something different too. Love to see more of this game play. Some points of the game I caught myself holding my breath as the torpedos came by, or trying to spot the subs in the distance too. Can you play different era's of submarine warfare? Like the first time subs were used for warfare, or up to the present day where they have multipurpose role like laying mines, to launching SLBM's, to sending out small forces to infiltrate a country?
At the moment there are two eras you can play, 1964 and 1984 so early cold war and late cold war both from the US side, A Soviet campaign may be in the works. The game is built around the idea of the cold war going hot so there is really nothing older than the late 1950's or newer than the mid 80's.
Well done in the game, and great vid! Loved the "action effects" you put in as well (fun fact, submarine number "744" was never actually assigned to any US Navy sub). And hey, don't feel too bad about scraping her aft on the bottom- you could have done what the San Francisco (SSN-711) actually did, and run into a mountain at flank speed. I dunno how to feel with the three torps into the Typhoon- I guess at peace that all hands died then. I wonder if anyone could have been alive in S3 as you passed by her. Not that I expect anything like that in the gameplay, just some morbid thinking for the story.
It doesn't help that the charts we had showed that seamount 3 miles away from where it actually was. RIP MM2 Ashley. Was really glad I had gotten out and wasn't there for that.
Ouch, yeah, that would have been a nasty surprise. RIP indeed to the man lost, and thank you for your service, no disrespect for the crew intended. They fought like mad to bring her up.
Hi, I have been a subscriber for a while and I think adding cold waters to the Los of games covered was a genius idea. Also, could you please do an in depth (pun totally intended) review on all submarines (USN) in game like you did with war thunder planes? Also, over on the Sub Sum website there is a fictional Seattle class submarine mod that might be fun along with the Russian ships mod pack.
This game is a remake of "Tom Clancy's SSN". It is basically identical, just with better graphics. I liked "SSN". Was impressed with how they managed to translate all the sensory input a submarine has into a simple graphical interface.
Negative. It's a remake of MicroProse's "Red Storm Rising", from the late 80s. That's even in the developer's description on it's Steam store page. Plays almost exactly like it. Which is good because RSR was an absolutely fantastic game, back in the day. It does have SSN-style manual steering of the sub, although the helm order system will be added later. All good stuff, nevertheless. :-)
This was probably one of the best video I have seen on Cold Waters. Not sure if anyone has told you already, the "knuckles" that were formed while maneuvering can act as a way to spoof torpedoes as well. That why you kept getting notifications about knuckles formed.
I know, that's why I was forming them, Trying to create a wall of clutter and noise so when I made my actual manoeuvre the incoming torps had too much to look at to be able to track properly. Edit: And thank you!
Why did that typhoon come back? In the old C64 game Red Storm Rising, any missle sub or boomer once they started running, they never look back, even less come back.
Looks like she tried to surface after taking the first torpedo to pump out the water, hit the ice shelf and basically made herself dead in the water. Ha.
What would it mean if I was tracking the typhoon’s bearing via active sonar. The sonar-men couldn’t mark its bearing but I was getting a read back through active I followed it but all the sudden I was no longer tracking it. I think it’s because maybe I was at 600 the floor was at 730 and maybe I went right under it. When I started to back off to get another reading I got troped from the area I just left but it was only circleing as if to block me from going back that way. Atm I’m only hearing the last escort which in full disengagement.
magztv I'm really interested of you playing coldwaters and it's my favorite game. could you do a full campaign let's but also do the single missions too? thanks.
I hope Killerfish games will do a new ww2 ship game after this maybe a more globaly focused one compared to battle of the Atlantic but this time develop it for PC and not just port the phone game. Considering how great cold water is i bet it would blow minds left and right
I really hope this game sells well, if it does the devs may add the Russian side as playable and make multiplayer. PvP MP in this would be so much fun.
Do you know what "knuckles" are? You were making quite a few of them during those hard maneuvers. They're pockets of turbulent water, formed by a submarine maneuvering at speed, that can reflect active sonar signatures. In other words, knuckles are decoys for active sonar. :)
I didn't mention a lot of stuff in the video. I wasn't doing a tutorial, just some good game play to introduce the game to my channel. If and when I do a tutorial I will be sure to cover such things.
I see. That aside, it was still entertaining as all hell. Especially that twist at the end. I really did not see that coming at all. Silly Russians. Sending three out of four/five ship class out on the same mission, letting them get sunk by one American, and then shooting one of their own in the ass. I blame vodka. Speaking of which, do you know if Russian submariners had rations of vodka like the cosmonauts?
Currently recovering from surgery... and bored... yeah I'll be picking this up :) Anyone know if there are plans to add the Royal Navy at any point? Been trying to find out but not coming up with much.
It's a fantastic game, well worth your time. Unsure about the royal navy but there is talk of a USSR campaign being added and you can mod the game to activate the Russian boats now as they are fully modeled.
Yeah picked up on the Russian campaign, really looking forward to it. Used to Play 688 Attack Sub on the Megadrive when I was a kid, brings back lots of fond memories. I also now happen to live about 10 miles from the old American base at Holy Loch and can see our subs comming and going from Faslane fairly regularly.
Once a torpedo is active, searching and off cable it's hostile to everything in the water. As to how common it is I can't say but once the fist is free it will chase anything it acquires.
And how would that work? You can't transmit radio signals under water so you can't use IFF, Visual identification doesn't work because you can't see anything at 500ft down. The sonar on a torp can only see object or no object in order to keep it small so it can't tell the difference and there is no way to use it to be able to tell the difference.
MagzTV that makes sense, it just seems like something that could have been done to avoid friendly fire, or even taking yourself out with your own torps...
Nope, Water is a bitch. It wasn't until digital control systems came into place post 1985 that any safety features of that kind could be added without compromising the performance of the torp. Even the systems added post digital such as FENCE and ACR didn't protect the sub directly, It would just turn the torpedo off if a select group of perimeters where hit. Providing the sub stays within the limitations of the program it should be safe but if it goes outside of them the torp can still acquire and kill them.
The Soviets are a mod at the moment, there may however be a proper campaign at some point. That said I may cover the mod at some point anyway, Even if just so I can drive the Alfa.
EmpiricalMadman the creaking and groaning of sinking vessels as well is a pretty haunting noise

Take a small word of advise from a retired P.O. from the R.A.N. when you have evaded the torp don't continue dropping noisemakers, you will end up dragging the torp back to you.
Don't worry, that's not how it works in this game. Noisemakers cause torpedoes to lose contact with you if you're close enough to them.
Nixod the devs may fix that in the future, so the PO's advice still stands.
Thank you for the advice, sir :)
I served on the Warrnambool then later on the Adelaide. I was even in the Gulf in 1991 after Desert Storm.
i wouldnt bother trying to give this clown any advice...
GeordieBiker422 why
I have to say, I never could have imagined such aggressive maneuvering from such massive underwater vessels -- the sheer scale and intensity, mixed with the graceful size and incredible suspense was breathtaking. If there was such a thing as dogfighting underwater, this was it.

Cold Waters by Magz? I need another account...

@Magztv we need more of this.
this is just the coolest game...great balance of realism and complexity but still easy enough to learn and go
This is a fantastic game, love it. It has so much potential, and the devs are working hard on making the Subsim community happy. It is gonna be a winner for many years.
34 min of listening to magz sure why not!
Magz - If you are within approximately 180 feet of the bottom, your crew will instantly retract the towed sonar array.

I didn't read any of that, but I'm sure it was very interesting
MagzTV: like the red October sort of intro.. 👍
MagzTV: everything you was here... Never happened
Please do more, I can't get enough.
just as a hint that I've learned by watching a former sonar operator from a sub after he retired from 20 years of naval service..... active sonar on a torpedo that you launch screams "SHOOT YOUR WEAPONS HERE" from the moment it launches..... passive sonar on the Mk. 48 torpedo can still be just as effective, it just doesn't give your position away immediately to your target group.

You got really lucky with those close calls with the torpedoes Magz!
As soon as I saw this game, I knew you would be playing it! I would love some more!
Great video Magz, would definitely love to see more of this. Awesome commentary throughout too as per usual. That torp escape though...was abit too close. Thanks for bringing this to us.
This game is a lot of fun . I am really having a great time playing it .
I'd love to see more of this game on this channel
Another video is going up in a few hours.
Love the sound effects of this game, reminds me of a lot of scenes from The Hunt for Red October
The sound work is fantastic
I've found that setting my torpedoes to activate closer to the sub (putting the launch marker on the map closer to yourself) tends to yield a greater chance of them acquiring a target, since they have more time to search for them. 33:07 sounds like “USS F**king Hell”, brilliant video. This made me want this game even more
11:00 that torpedo going in circles was probably air dropped, if that was not on the ice cap. most russian subs (when they are ai) dont use circle pattern a lot.
it's probably worth taking into consideration that Cold waters is a cold war gone hot scenario if i remember correctly. certainly that could have been reason enough for the soviets to step up production on the sierra class sub.

Good video Magz! a nice video for a nice Thursday evening.
Great stuff, nice to have the Typhoon handed to you on a plate!

love the Red October time text at the cut

I've been loving this game, especially with the mod that adds a bunch of subs including the Red October
So one mk 48 torpedo in the 1980's cost approximately $3.5 million...Magz says fuck it and ripple fires them
Hey I'm not the one paying for them :D
" Comrade Sierra, we are communist, we must share our torpedoes. "
Wonderful video. Also, something different too. Love to see more of this game play. Some points of the game I caught myself holding my breath as the torpedos came by, or trying to spot the subs in the distance too.

I know, that's why I chose 744 as the number for the Far Canal.
If there was, at that depth they wouldn't be for long.
It doesn't help that the charts we had showed that seamount 3 miles away from where it actually was. RIP MM2 Ashley. Was really glad I had gotten out and wasn't there for that.

Typhoon Captain: *YOU ARROGANT FOOL, YOU'VE KILLED US!*
Love it! Please LP a campaign.
in the first seconds i thought this was going to be a boring video, glad i stuck around.
I'm glad you did too, more will be coming if you are interested.
MagzTV I personally am, keep up the good work
Hey Magz you should watch Jive Turkey play Cold Waters, hes a master at this game and a pleasure to watch!
IceH2o
mags is much better, no comparison.

There will be more today, can't put the game down at the moment.
Ha, same here!

NefariousKoel Guess who wrote the book that game was based on. lol
this made me want to watch the hunt for red october
Its reverse with me.
Mission "Far Canal" ... you'll only laugh if you're aussie :P
im british and i laughed more than i should lol

One ping, one ping only, right now I am going to watch Hunt for Red October.
Why did that typhoon come back? In the old C64 game Red Storm Rising, any missle sub or boomer once they started running, they never look back, even less come back.
hey, Typhoon have 2 pressure hulls. Is it possible to sink it with multiple torpedoes hitting same hull?
yes more cold water plz magz
Far Canal that video was good!
Looks like she tried to surface after taking the first torpedo to pump out the water, hit the ice shelf and basically made herself dead in the water. Ha.
my grandfather went sub hunting in a helicopter, that he researched, around a carrier fleet
oooh this game makes me nostalgic for Hunter Killer...
*sees Magz upload Cold Waters*
I could not have hit this video faster.
What would it mean if I was tracking the typhoon’s bearing via active sonar. There is no thermal layer either
This is a piece of cake mission. Try to do number 6. Ships always outrun mk37 torpedoes. You need to be very lucky to do that.
Hey Magz...nice video. You might want to look in on Jive Turkey. He does CW also.
Yeah, that sub would have made the surface if it hadn't been under the ice. I'd be willing to bet that it tried to break the ice.
magztv I'm really interested of you playing coldwaters and it's my favorite game. could you do a full campaign let's but also do the single missions too? thanks.
Starting the 1984 campaign today.
Honestly you need the equivalent amounts of subscribers as phlydaily has
Can you launch SLBM's in this game?
Towed array control? how?
I spend hours dodging torps waiting for them to run out of fuel. and i watch you dodge them with ease.
And 3 years passed :)) Have u found the way to deal with those torps properly?
@@miennamgiaiphong1160 nope. I’m still terrible at it.
If you are being chased by a torp, don't use noisemakers too much :)) Save them for emergencies, use knuckle form instead :))
Magz- what level did you play this on?
I hope Killerfish games will do a new ww2 ship game after this maybe a more globaly focused one compared to battle of the Atlantic but this time develop it for PC and not just port the phone game. Considering how great cold water is i bet it would blow minds left and right
I really hope this game sells well, if it does the devs may add the Russian side as playable and make multiplayer. PvP MP in this would be so much fun.
in soviet russia torps dont track enemy they track allies
Commissar U-boat
Do you know what "knuckles" are? You were making quite a few of them during those hard maneuvers. They're pockets of turbulent water, formed by a submarine maneuvering at speed, that can reflect active sonar signatures. In other words, knuckles are decoys for active sonar. :)
I know exactly what Knuckles are, Why else do you think I was making them.
But you never mentioned that in the video. :(
I didn't mention a lot of stuff in the video. I wasn't doing a tutorial, just some good game play to introduce the game to my channel.
If and when I do a tutorial I will be sure to cover such things.

Speaking of which, do you know if Russian submariners had rations of vodka like the cosmonauts?
I get the feeling that was a custom name for the sub. Far Canal is almost as good as Far Queue :P
The Far Queue is a different class.
Been thinking about this one, but the price is a little high for my tastes when I already have a library I have to go through...
This does look sick though... Kind of like space combat given the Z axis
Is Australian.
Names his sub fark'n 'ell.
Love it.
Currently recovering from surgery... and bored... yeah I'll be picking this up :)
Anyone know if there are plans to add the Royal Navy at any point? Been trying to find out but not coming up with much.

I also now happen to live about 10 miles from the old American base at Holy Loch and can see our subs comming and going from Faslane fairly regularly.
Sort of reminds of Sub Command from way back
Magz, how often would torpedoes target the sub that launched them in real life?
Once a torpedo is active, searching and off cable it's hostile to everything in the water. As to how common it is I can't say but once the fist is free it will chase anything it acquires.
MagzTV I would think they would have some kind of thing that said "hey this is friendly, don't hit this" built in on all the torpedoes automatically.

Providing the sub stays within the limitations of the program it should be safe but if it goes outside of them the torp can still acquire and kill them.
Is this against AI or players? Is there any option for either of these?
AI, there is currently no multiplayer in Cold Waters so all videos you see are vs AI.
Great video
This game is so TENSE!
19:11
Sierra 1.
Magz you should chek out Jive Turkey on more Cold Waters stuff. He knows what he is doing from real life experience and he is also entertaining
Also what are the Typhoons as opposed to Sierras?
Sierra Class are advanced fast attack Submarines, Typhoon Class is one of the worlds largest Ballistic missile submarines.
MagzTV Ah OK thanks.
after reading about it 20*84 tonne nuclear ICBMs on board is pretty huge
Yep, that's why she is the main target, you do not want one of those getting into launch range of your country.
love the look is this game but can you do a video on the tutorial
More of this! Since that damned gnome is already playing the US, will you cover the soviets if that is possible?
The Soviets are a mod at the moment, there may however be a proper campaign at some point.
That said I may cover the mod at some point anyway, Even if just so I can drive the Alfa.
MagzTV Lookin' forward to it!
I found War Thunder but you can't use submarines on there, only at April Fools. This game isn't like that is it?
It would have been funny if the Typhoon had done what you did to your rudder but worse and that was why it was nose up like that. Good ending anyway.
the video didnt even load yet but take my like
i love this game 😁
Well of course the Soviets didn't make more Sierras! When 3 get taken out by a lone US sub, time to go back to the drawing board! ;)
Soviets and their red October manoeuvres I never recall any survivors of the manoeuvre interesting
is this game obtainable on steam and is it free?
Yes it is on steam, no it's not free.
wait so these subs have hundreds of meters of wire reel inside them for remote control?
Yes
Thousands actually. Los Angeles can fire and control torps at standoff ranges on the order of 20-30km.
it must be very fine to carry so much of it
Cavitating like a lunatic how could you not be fired at
"Far Canal"? That's certainly an odd name for a US Sub. Especially a 688.
Apparently it was named by an Australian after the battle of Far Canal. :D
Ah, I see. That makes sense then. :)
Lol- Foster's is made in the U.S...............
Anyways, thx for playing this game- I was wondering if you were going to try it.
Oh, USS Far Canal. I thought you said USS Fuck'n Hell (33:05)
