- Cold Waters: Ambush
Los Angeles-Class Attack Submarine
USS Boston SSN-703
22th Nov 1984, Greenland Sea
Our window to prevent a Soviet invasion of Norway is closed, The Soviets have landed. New orders have us sailing to the Greenland Sea to intercept and ambush a Soviet suppl ship while it is tending to a small task force.
This should be fun, I hope you enjoy!

I absolutely love this series, really enjoyable to watch.
Please do this game more magz. I LOVE this game.
I really like these Cold Waters videos. Please continue making them Magz!
You are a dangerous shipper captain!
for a game I will have no chance to ever play with any skill these videos are surprisingly addicting!
Made that look easy. Good job Bruv 😉
I don't know if there was an update that changed stealth since you did these videos to now but watching the game play seems drastically different to my recent experience. The main being I can have a strong thermal lair, be running at 1000ft with engine idle on full quiet and over 10k yards away and within 5 active pings they have already 100% located my submarine. Moments later they have launched several rocket fired torpedoes accurately on my location. I was amazed to watch your video and see you maintain stealth for so long especially at such a shallow depth with no thermal lair...
I like the way the game plays in your videos, not how it plays now. Stealth seems to be a distant relative to the game against active sonar surface vessels now, regardless of conditions.
Literally about to head off to bed cus nothing is interesting. Gets Notification. Now i'm here...
Thank you Magz
Beautifully executed.
Only two torpedoes to sink the Kirov? 🤔
I think one of them caused the main Granit missiles to explode on board.
Nice video Magz as always.
Last time I played a mission like this I was dodging depth charges and 3 torps at the same time, didn't end well
It's about the speed you hit the targets, The faster you can take them out the less time they have to react. Between the missile and the first Mk.48 I had the two sub hunters dead before the Kirov could even get her helo's dipping sonar in the water and at that point my 3rd 48 was just about to land.
Ships like the Moskva and the Kirov can very easily trace your missile launch back to the origin.
Fireing missiles at stuff before having sank these big ships is the same as shouting: "HERE I AM! SINK ME!"
magz man... really enjoying this series. I'm not sure exactly what it is I like so much about it however. Keep up the good work and thanks for the info you shared last week about your recording process.
It would be cool if they soon add multiplayer...I know the US subs never operated in packs, but a Russian coop campaign in Alfa's, Typhoons and Victors etc would be awesome
Impressive execution mate best streamer i have seen play this
That Kirov had a pretty bad list, either way it went she was dead
Oh she was but I needed her under as quickly as possible. As you saw the list doesn't prevent her from firing her torps so a second 48 to speed her decent below the waves was a good investment.
Definitely, Ivan seems to not care about sinking when he can try and sink SSN
That way it looks like he didn't lose his ship from not properly defending it, but because you're just too good
Kendall Scott iq
this was amazing! you handle your Sub really well :)
On American WW2 destroyers and destroyer escorts that rocket launcher with the depth charges was called a Hedgehog. I have no idea what the official name for it was.
I believe it is designated the RBU-6000, but i could be wrong
Man Ngai Ho the Soviets/Russians used several different RBU systems. RBU-6000 was the most widely used. There was also -1000, -1200, and -2500.
Kirov class is the biggest surface war vessel compared to any nation period xD.
The Kirov isnt/wasnt armed with any Missilelaunched torpedoes aka SS-N 14 Silex. Its armed with SS-N 19 Shipwreck Antiship missiles instead. But anyway, its a game, nice dealing with the reds
I don't feel like eating if i can't watch magz play cold waters at the same time.
Please do a lot of this game as I am beginning to seriously loose weight.
Those dB numbers seem funny. 180 dB is the equivalent of a large passenger jet during takeoff
Sound is measured differently in Water than in the air.
I'll just drop a quote here that should explain it better than I can.
"To make a comparison of these underwater sound pressure levels with the values quoted for sounds in air an important point must be addressed. The sound pressure levels in air are usually referenced to the threshold level for human hearing which is now standardised at 20 µPa. Thus if an rms sound pressure level of 100 Pa is measured in water the result is quoted as 160 dB re 1µPa, whereas the same level in air is quoted as 134 dB. The conversion factor of 26 dB [20×log(20/1)] is due to higher reference level, but mention of the different reference level is often omitted.
The comparison of Intensity values corresponding to the air and water measurement are also subject to a large adjustment before meaningful comparisons can be made.
The relation between pressure and intensity is often quoted as P2 proportional to I, but this is only true if the acoustic impedance is constant. Acoustic impedance is a measure of how the pressure in the medium rises when a sound of a given intensity is applied. If the impedance is low, say 415 Pa.s/m as in air, there is a small rise in pressure. If the acoustic impedance is high, say 1,540,000 Pa.s/m as in water, the rise in pressure is approx 3700 times the rise in air pressure for the same intensity wave.
So to compare a sound pressure level in air and water, take the sound pressure level of a loud rock band of say 120 dB re 20µPa and find the sound pressure that would be observed in water for a source emitting at the same intensity. There is an additional 26 dB because the measurement is from a reference level of 1µPa instead of 20µPa, and there is 36dB additional rise in pressure due to the higher impedance of water. So the value measured will be 180 dB re 1uPa. A noise level of 180 dB is the roughly the noise level heard from a large container ship about 10 m away."
Look at me learning new things. Thanks for the education mate
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RUR-5_ASROC
ASROC. This is what the Kirov was shooting at you. Well, perhaps not that EXACT one, but the acronym holds for any of the rocket assisted anti-sub weapons.
It is either a Metel (SS-N-14) or a Vodopad-NK (SS-N-16) depending on if it was actually the Kirov or one of her sisterships (sisters carry the latter)
Never seen this game before, will check it out as it looks really cool.
I feel like I'm watching a movie based on a Tom Clancy novel every time you post one of these.
there is a reason for that....
Yes, I am aware.
Nice job Magz, this game is amazing!
The Torpedo-loaded-missiles are called commonly called "Silex"
That's the NATO codename, yes.
Which is easier to say than "Torpedo-loaded-missile" or "Metel Anti-ship Complex". I suppose you could also just call it "Snowstorm" if you wanted.
Tense stuff!!!
and there is one simple mission i found damn tough to play, its the one in shallow waters coasts where u must send 8 TLAMs (sometimes its 10 asked) on a harbor...
waow, send 2 first tomahawks is easy, but soon after u have both helos & the plane finding u very easally... and so, with less of 250ft to dive, its close of impossible to survive their counter attack...
its a very intresting mission, very tactic (about stealth & smart escape after each salves of TLAMs), but so hard to accomplish...
if u search a new idea for videos, and if u prevail there, plzz show us ! i am curious to see how its possible to survive this scenario... :p
What distance are you sending them from? As long as you are within 177kyd it's easy because you are so far away that they cant get to your launch point.as soon as they are launched just hit full speed out of there
In the 1984 campaign, I frequently found myself looking for opportunities to sink a ship with a harpoon to save on torpedoes. I would have done exactly that with the Dubna. Why were you so set on using a torpedo?
Probably visual stealth.
Crew can see missile.
Crew can't see torpedo.
YESSSSS More Cold Waters YAY! :D
watching Magz sink ships at 3am. Wait, what?
Beautifully done Magz. Just wondering, why didn't you just splash that Dubna with a Harpoon?
I only carry a handful of harpoons, there was no risk in my following the Dubna so no real reason to waste it when I may need it in a later mission.
MAGSTV, you're badass dude, you don't nearly have as many subs as you deserve.
In the kirov's state of being doomed to sinking and fatally damaged, what is the reason, friendly fire aside, which isn't gonna happen if the cargo ship is in the direction you aren't shooting, that one wouldn't just fire every available weapon into a wide general area of the enemy vessel before abandoning the ship?
That captain probably went down with the ship, else hes going to a gulag
"Every weapon" in the case of a Kirov class battlecruiser would include ballistic missiles, it would not be practical to do so. I don't know the arming range of those weapons, but considering how close he was, they might not have armed in time. The crew would most likely be focused on damage control or panicking after being hit by a torpedo out of nowhere. Some silos might have also been flooded with the way it was heeling over. Electric power might be cut considering that the torp hit directly amidships, so some systems might be offline. Either the weapons would not fire or arm in the first place or the crew would be flipping their shit at the fact that their ship is in a near 20 degree list would be your reason why.
Or it could just be that the captain wanted to try as much as he could to save his doomed ship to make it look like he tried to save it, which would be useful for the court martial that would likely come up after having his country's most prized warship shot out from under his ass.
Do take this with a grain of salt, I am not familiar with modern warships but seeing how crews react to being hit by torpedoes in historical scenarios and how much damage the torpedoes do to the ships themselves, this is what I could reasonably assume.
The Kirov doesn't carry ballistic missiles.
I was doubtful on that too. Again, modern warships are not quite my area of expertise.
He does raise a good point there... When I see that two of my escorts are dead and I also list heavily, I'd too fire like 15 torpedoes in the general direction of the threath (the cargo ship was already hauling ass in the opposing direction anyway) just to give them PLENTY to think about.
Did the Soviets ever coordinate surface fleets with attack submarines?
Have you ever thought of surfacing and shooting a torpedo or missile at a transport ship point blank range, or is ever possible?
Hello Magz.
I'm just wondering, do you have any tips to increase sensor range (especially in the 1968 campaign)? I'm having a hard time finding targets I know are there.
Doesn't anyone find it odd that there is seemingly only one submarine tasked with repelling an entire invasion force?
Yep.
Royal Australia air navy = Magstv
funny thing, you fly the sub instead of driving
Magz, have you seen the new work-in-progress Soviet campaign mod?
No, I'm waiting for the devs to release an official soviet campaign and didn't even realize there was a mod being made for it.
I know about the mod to drive the soviet subs of course.
why u just get 4ships to sunk ?
is it random or is it linked with difficulty ?
everytime i get 6 to 8 ships to sunk but i am not sure if its difficulty lvl or just bad luck...
easy to get a first wave when no subs are around, but with 6 or 8 ships to get (including 3to4 main targets), there is always one or two who fled away, and after its really hard to find them back (i dont set on for permanent ennemy ships views, when survivors flee in different directions, no guarantee to find them back all, etc).
It's random, I could have got this fleet or I could have had to face a fleet with Two Kirovs and four sub hunters. You will just not know until you get into the zone.
MagzTV
ah ok, thx.
i should have more luck next times then :D
So, this game is good? I've read a lot of comparisons to "Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising" from Microprose, which I spent HOURS playing on my first PC.
It's very pretty and rather a nice game. It's not a sim. Dangerous Waters....that's a sim that will make you work.
@@NorthForkFisherman Thanks!
1 shot 1 kill
U dont have sonic maker?!
Love the series so far, but could you maybe tone down the sound of the green text in the beginning? It's a little loud, especialy for people with headphones.
Typo on the word Assault in the beginning :P
send a decoy at them
Curious why the Sovs would waste a capital ship like the Kirov escorting a replenishment ship when plenty of other options to get the job done. Oh well, their loss!
Listen to the mission overview again, The Kirov wasn't an escort. It's the lead ship in a task force attacking shipping and submarines operating in the area. The replenishment ship was there to re-supply the Kirov and her escorts.
It was just a stroke of luck that I caught the target replenishment ship and the task force together so two birds.
Can you win the war or just lose it?
You can win it. You should be frugal with your weapons. To stay at sea as long as possible. Concentrate on the primary targets. It is more important to sink the correct targets than killing tonnage.
You can win the war, but once NATO gets close to winning there is a final mission where you have to hunt Typhoons under the polar ice cap(assuming 1980s campaign). If you fail either by death or just not arriving in time you lose the campaign
Get the Ruskis out of my country Magz!
I'm working on it :)
Magz, when I look at my 688 Hunter/Killer game from 1997 I have the feeling that it is the better simulator. I do not own Cold Waters so I cannot really compare the two games. CW definitely looks better, the physics simulation may be better and it may be more fun to play. But I think the game would benefit from more systems to manage like in 688 HK. At least you should have the option to turn those systems on and off. But maybe I am wrong and it is better this way.
It's not, Cold Waters is only a lite simulation not a full blown simulator. That being said it's not just the physics that is better, weapons performance modeling is better, the ships and boats perform closer to real life values and most importantly the sound propagation in cold waters for sonar both passive and active is near perfect.
Also the 688 was still classified in 1997, The systems management in 688HK is a guess based on older subs and will be inaccurate.
Also what systems would you turn on and off? I think you will find that those systems will be managed based on what you do in CW or that they are systems that there would be no reason to turn off to begin with.
Noob Question: wouldn't it have been better to immediately shoot the kirov with two harpoons?
Well that depends on if you like showing your exact location to every single hostile vessel in the engagement zone and how much you enjoy dodging multiple RPK-2 Vyuga missile delivered anti submarine torpedoes.
hmm... Then torpedoes for the two Grisha IIIs and after a minute or two shooting two harpoons at the Kirov?
I am trying to figure out a pattern here. (or if there is any)
Are you a real navel or x officer? your techniques are amazing!
hi
This game even though it is fun but heavily sided with western sub.
do more ho 229 gameplay plz
Visually boring game.
hi
Clawz howdy!
