Did some math out of boredom that is likely wrong, but the Mk 48 should have a closing distance of an Alfa of about 13.5 feet/s (About 4.1 m/s). Alfa is fast!
Don't know about the nickname, but i recall it was the most automated soviet submarine of its time, and its hull was made of titanium instead of steel, that's what allows many soviet/russian subs to have such high depth ratings, but also makes them a lot more expensive to build than steel made subs.
Magz, you get the craziest missions! I just seem to get the standard 'Hunt the Spetnaz', "Hunt the supply ships" etc. etc. Though I did have one weird mission where I had to land a commando team in a friendly port...... Textbook setup there and great execution. I do find, even on elite setting, the AI is somewhat...underwhelming. At the very least they should shoot down the bearing of the transient when they detect it. Any torpedoes in the water would make for an interesting fight. I also have yet to see a single enemy unit react to a MOSS. The MOSS is great at attracting torpedo attention, but not so much the actual fleet units.
Sargon's Slave Yup, as a general rule soviet passive sonar is really bad, whereas their active sonar is very good. The reverse is true for American subs: good passive, but bad active.
Indeed, As Sacha said there passive is just that bad mostly due to the submarines themselves being quite noisy, this self generated noise makes them a little hard of hearing. But there active sonar is amazing, which is why I went out of my way to execute the attack in a manner that would be least likely to get them to switch to active, because at that range the second they did I would be clearly visible to all of them.
Ive got a tactical question - the MOSS simulates a cavitating sub right? If i was a soviet commander running at 5 or 10kts and hear a "cavitating sub" there is no reason to increase speed and do wild maneuvres. Afterall I had had the advantage of running silent and the other submarine would most likely not hear me going that fast. I would simply try to get into a tactically advantage situation, build up the resolution and try to sink it
@21:10 I really love Cold Waters, and i loved playing Red Storm Rising on my C-64 in 1988 (which is the game that Cold Waters is re-making). I played it for hours, and hour, and HOURS in 10th grade. But i sucked at it. And as much as i love the game, and keep playing it - i SUCK at it. I just don't seem to have a head for the strategy. Maybe it just takes practice, practice, and this time actually invent the tactics of submarine warfare. Which is why line: > The 688 is great fun to drive out. But once you start learning the mechanics of the game, it's very easy to dominate the soviet submaries. *emotional damage*
New player here, your explanations of your decisions early game are most helpful. I’ve been playing the 1968 scenarios in epic mod and am not finding succeed yet engaging the Russian subs before they detect me with active sonar. Loving this game though!
Manual control of torpedoes looks really strong in the game. A bit too strong, IMO. How does manual control of torpedoes work in RL, anyway? Does the controller have to rely on the sonar contacts to guide the torpedo to the target (which is obviously much harder than with our third person camera) or do the torpedoes have some sort of in-built camera feed? In any case, great work Magz. These videos are fun to watch, even if the tension factor is sadly no longer there. =(
Camera feed doesn't do much service in deep water so I'm 100% certain they don't have cameras on board. Just controlling via some guidance from the echo
It does seem to me that the 3rd person view is a bit of a cheat mode compared to real life. I was wondering if real life controllers have an INS position on the torpedo or if they simply try to locate it with the passive sonar
they can only guide torpedoes when guidance wire is connected to it.... so in that range there is no guidance wire anymore, so november could avoid that torpedo...
Creep drive, Alfa's main screw is too loud to use in an 'ultra quiet' situation even at slow RPM's so when stealth is needed she shuts down her main screw and moves under those small electric engines.
I like your videos so naturally I watch them from time to time. And your Cold Waters videos are just as good as any of your other videos. But I have to be honest when ever I watch these videos about Cold Waters I can not help thinking that I would really find this game incredibly boring. And Yes I do like Submarine movies bla bla bla. But I imagine that this game is probably as boring as being a actual sailor trapped under water for weeks in tiny submarine. (Yes they are huge but not if you have to live on it for months) I imagine you must have a pretty incredible fascination for Submarines if you enjoy this game. (Not saying it is a bad game it is probably awesome for those that are nuts about submarines, and I do literally mean NUTS)
Not really, there is a level of anticipation that comes once you understand how the game is played. A complex little game of "chess" where you are tying to position yourself for an optimal attack without letting the enemy know you are positioning yourself for an optimal attack, That can be quite fun for those who are strategically minded. When things go right the attack looks smooth and easy, when you mess it up then things get real interesting in a real hurry.
Ok that makes sense. I do like a good game of chess. The problem is that I often dont have the patience for it. And just like chess this game probably requires a lot of patience.
For some reason the mixing of SI and imperial terms in 'kilo yards', bothers the heck out of me. Otherwise very enjoyable watch. Unlike many people showing Cold Waters you know what you're doing.
The prefix "kilo" is not a SI term, it is a power of ten multiplier. SI refers to the system of units to measure the fundamental units of length, mass and time - meter, kilogram and second. Imperial units would be foot, pound(force) and second. I do agree that the use of a prefix that is commonly used with SI units with a unit derived from some other system is unsettling.
Recent patch changed the chance of wire break. ive noticed since then that you have to do something really stupid to snap a wire. . . not sure if I like the change, I didn't really need the help.

MagzTV I so love this serie and i even learn a lot from it cause before i was not quite interested in submarines but now i am. Keep the series up!!👍🏼
*spies
Another thrilling episode of "Well Done! But this is not your mission objective"
Alien Marksman (waves hand) these aren't the subs you're looking for.
Really enjoying these cold water vids, looking forward to seeing the 1968 campaign.
as long as he is not driving a US sub. Then it is torture.
I'll be driving a US sub, the idea is to make thing harder than they currently are.
MagzTV prepare for frustration Magz. Have fun.

Yep, Alfa hauls arse.
Was it not called the "Goldfish", because it was so expensive to build?
Don't know about the nickname, but i recall it was the most automated soviet submarine of its time, and its hull was made of titanium instead of steel, that's what allows many soviet/russian subs to have such high depth ratings, but also makes them a lot more expensive to build than steel made subs.
That was the Papa class that was even faster then the alfa , beeing able to reach 44 knots.
That Intro was amazing
Not to mention the video itself
Templar Baron Yeah I thought the video was alright. But that intro.....
"They have no idea we are here"
5 seconds after accidentally cavitating.

Love that beginning title. Also, unusual ending animation too. So far so good.
man i wish this series couldn't end
Wow is soviet passive just soooo bad that they couldn't see Magz for like the first 10 mins while ur stalking them??

@@sachaguilhemjouan2082 What? How can one have bad active SONAR if the passive SONAR is great? Active is just pinging and listening.
Totally incredible video...you done an amazing job...Thank you so so much

I enjoy ur commentary
What are those props that are on the end of the Alfas tail fins? never noticed that before.
Creep drive, Alfa's main screw is too loud to use in an 'ultra quiet' situation even at slow RPM's so when stealth is needed she shuts down her main screw and moves under those small electric engines.
Loving that logo there Magz
Nice one and thumps up ! :D
patch 1.07b is out. get it magz
I'm not sure what I look forward to more Cold Waters or Game of Thrones
_"...the November should crap itself..."_
😝😝😝😝
You should try the beta patch, it's quite good

Most people associate the title with typical Aussies. At least, that's the impression I get from Neighbors
You should make patches!
Damn it, not early enough
Oh boy notification sqaud
I thought these Soviets reacted so slowly because they were filled with Vodka after a successful mission
mmmm yes more
Will you ever upload in 4k?
what TV are you watching this on? 4k is not needed...
I have a 4k monitor.

what is this i'm hearing of a wedding?
Oscar Medina watch his run down under he explains it there.
Oscar Medina I'm marrying Magz. Definitely not lying
You aren't breaking your wires as much anymore. Why is that?

I should be studying but your stuff is too good not to watch
