While some craft distilleries choose the $100 price point as an indication of their "craftiness", generally speaking the Big Boys give you what you pay for. My experience has been that if JB, Four Roses, etc., are charging a premium dollar, you will receive a truly premium product. YMMV...
Try using a lighter on new KC bottles to gently warm the wax along the path of the pull tab. Makes it temporarily less brittle. Should prevent shrapnel 👍🏻
The 9 year is definitely my go to.. Where im at its $37 after taxes. Its not harsh and has a good taste, also have never had a hangover with this stuff if I over do it.. For the price/taste its definitely one of the best all round bourbons.. If your a Jim Beam or Black Label Jack fan give it a try, does not cost much more, and you'll be blown away by just the mouth feel alone
I recently purchased a 15 year old store pick 120 proof for $45 dollars. The neck pour was a big harsh, but after a few days I went back for another pour and WOW it was so much better. Definitely oaky and dark with a punch of proof on the front end, but really good especially for the price.
Sarah nailed it on the 9year commentary... it’s perfect someone newish to the bourbon scene who is ready to step up the proof game... that’s me! And this has turned out to be one of my favorites to date. I’ve been 2 years into bourbon.
I'm 30 years into bourbon and always walked by Knob Creek until last week when the 9yr SB caught my eye. OMG what I've been missing. I will not be without a bottle as long as it's available. It is now one of my favorites and I will be adding more of the line.
having both in my whiskey cabinet, I would have to say I much prefer the 9 year. The 12 year has an overpowering oak bitterness that I don't like. For those of you who enjoy double IPAs, you may like it.
I think the answer to why try something other than a store pick is that a batched product just gives the distiller more options and control over the end product, rather than being limited to a single barrel, plus the previous point about not adding any water even if it was only proofed down a few points.
Just tried this the other night and it is a fine whiskey. The mouthfeel and finish definitely take it to the next level. Would take this over any Bookers I've had.
I've never had a barrel proof Knob Creek, but I have a Kelly Liquors store pick single barrel, and it's *gorgeous* bourbon. It was only $56 - there's stuff that's not as good that costs more - and when it's done I'm going to consider spending money I don't really have on another single barrel. The regular Knob Creek 9 is already my second favorite bourbon, and the only reason the single barrel isn't in that position is that the higher price makes it less likely that I can buy it whenever I want. The bottle I have I'm nursing - I only have a glass from it every two or three weeks.
Me when I saw the release- "no way I'm buying a cask strength 12 year for a hundred dollars when older picks are 50" Also me in reality- "im definitely goin to try that 12 year cask at least once lets be honest"
I'm still not sold on KC 9 year 120pf. Sipping on some now, and the rough edges and short finish (comparatively to other bourbons around that proof/year), even after the bottle has opened up some, don't make me inclined to buy another bottle at $60 (in VA). I'm not a big OGD 114 fan, but at around half the price, I can't say it wouldn't win in a blind. There's a younger, local barrel strength whiskey I'd pick, among others, before getting a second bottle of this, especially with the escalating price. Hell, I wish I could find another bottle of JB Distiller's Cut. The one I found in 2020 was lovely and only $25.
I Would still be interested the 12 year against the knob creek store picks (I know each is different). A lot of those end up in the 12 year range as well or more! Also, yes and $145 is my guess.
Gonna gently point my fingers in your direction as to why my bourbon "cabinet" keeps filling up. Love you guys. Very fun to watch here in Canton, GA. My local store has a store pick Knob Creek I may have to get soon...
$100 for a 12 year cask strength is absolutely a fine price tag for the quality Knob Creek puts out. Its $30ish to get 20.5 points of proof but their 12 year product could be $80 in todays market and that would be completely fair compared to most offerings. I think they would make plenty of profit on this bottle at $80 but if tradition holds this "limited release" will probably become a regular release and might even replace the normal 12 year at a similar price next year.
I'm glad Chad mentioned the Knob Creek 15 Year in the box and that he liked the 12 Year Barrel Proof much better because I recently bought the 15...and was very disappointed.
About 6 months ago i picked up a single barrel store pick that was quite tasty. Cant find the store pick anymore so i just picked up the standard. Hoping it measures up to the store pick. Ill find out tonight!
In my opinion... this BLOWS bookers out of the water. 12 years... cask strength... Both chad and sarah's reviews nailed it on the head. rich buttery mouth feel, LONG finish, and OMG.... this is so rich. I LOVE the 9yr single barrel, but man... this just drowns it under the water.
Since the small batch is seeing the 9 year age statement return, perhaps the name of the video should be "Knob Creek Single Barrel vs 12 yr Barrel Proof". Just food for thought! Great video as always guys!
To get a "pick" of anything I'd have to drive 120 miles one way so that's one reason to pick this over a store pick. I saw this on the shelf at a semi-local (40 miles away) store today and ALMOST grabbed it, but didn't based upon the regular Knob Creek I have that I'm not a big fan of (it's my mixer for Kentucky Mules). Instead of it I went with my current favorite Four Roses Small Batch Select.
Can't get the 12 year in Canada....or at least Alberta. So I pick up the Single Barrel 9 year when it goes on sale. Still fantastic but I'm jealous of those who can get the 12 year.
Great comparison here. This new 12 CS sounds wonderful. I gotta say, (obvious comment from someone who DID watch that far in the video, ha ha ha) --I'm not fully sold on the 12 year vatted at $100 when we can still get 12-15 year KC SiB picks for $45-$55ish many places. But I'm guessing as Sara speculated, this is a signal that those older SiB picks are gonna be going away. :/
Perhaps! Also as someone pointed out in the comments here, the distiller has more to work with to achieve certain profiles when batching a product vs the profile of one single barrel. I think it really comes down to your wallet, though. Do you wanna spend the money or are you happy enough with what you can get for $50.
@@ItsBourbonNight Absolutely. And that's a good point. Everything I've heard from folks who've had this one is consistent with your review. I bet I get around to it if I see it pop up on a shelf here in Indiana.
I will have to sample both to be sure all of these statements are true. Dunno if I can find stuff like this at the prices mentioned unfortunately. If I am lucky I might find them at a whiskey bar... once I can go sit at a bar again... :P
I have a couple of store picks of the 9 Year that are actually 12-14 years old and paid about $50 for both. I guess we won't be seeing any more of those going forward for $50.
Will you please consider an episode on bourbon cream? Like, flight fight the brands (Buffalo Trace, Nooku, etc), or compare to Irish cream and maybe rum cream (Rumchata).
I have a 120 proof Knob Creek single barrel and it’s ok going down but it really makes my whole mouth tingle. I’m about half way through the bottle and it is higher proof than the 90-100 that I’m used to. Am I just being a wimp?
I recently got into bourbons and whiskey and Jameson was my "gateway" from beer into the spirits. My local liquor store only carries single cask Knob Creeks and the hundred fifty dollar box version and the smoked maple. I do have to say that the smoked maple is dangerous because every sip just goes directly to my bacon addiction part of my brain. That sht can't be trusted lol. I've heard that Old Forester has some good stuff what would ya'll suggest from them?
It's Bourbon Night Really the $70 is the marked up price in Atlanta Most of the ones I have purchased have been under $65. BTW. I am a big KC fan I even have the 25 year anniversary edition. I just think Beam in general is starting to push the price points higher and higher. Bookers and Little Bok have become a pass for me due to the price huge increase in price. Love the Channel I purchased a lot of bottles based on your recommendations
Would y’all ever consider doing something like a silent tasting and write down each of your own opinion? I think it would be fun to see what differences & similarities y’all found in each and how y’all each preferred the other.
Was going to order a bottle of Yellowstone 116proof but the $38.01 S&H drove the price up to $103.98 way too much for one bottle of bourbon, so I'll just stick to Jim Beam and Wild Turkey 101 sold everywhere like Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 🤨
Did you buy the bottles local? If so where do they do delivery I live in Los Angeles looking to get that 12yr or perhaps the 15 yr that’s my next video to watch from you guys 🤭
I also live in LA area, haven’t seen the 12 yr cask strength yet as of April 2021, just the 100 proof. Our state seems to get allocated stuff late though.
FYI - If you hold the top of the bottle (grip it in your palm) and hold it for about 30-45 seconds, your body heat will soften the wax. So, when you pull the tab to open it, it will not shred...
I bought the knob creek 9 year reserve . It's a 120 proof single barrel and small batch . How could it be both a single barrel and a small batch ? That seems like a contradiction of terms .🤔
It's a one barrel batch, which is the smallest there is. "Small batch" means whatever a distillery wants it to mean. For the Limestone Branch distillery a small batch may be five barrels. But for Jim Beam, which routinely dumps huge numbers of barrels at a time, 100 barrels might be a very small batch.
Hey cutie pies, Have you guys tried Knob Creek 15 Year old 120 Proof Barrel Pick? If you have, what is your take on it? For under $50 I thought it was a A+ Bourbon. I would happily pay up to $100 for it.
Thanks! We mostly open everything, but we do have some bottles we are keep for posterity sake or that we're saving for a special occasion, anniversary, etc. But yeah, some we do plan on opening but just haven't yet because we have so many other things opened already!
Not sure if you have tried it yet... but yes.. the 12 year is GREAT. the 12yr cask strength will BLOW your mind. it takes the flavors to a whole different level.
Tough question. We usually like higher proof bourbons and we generally feel that the less watered down and filtered the bourbon is, the more flavor it imparts. Others will say the water unlocks the flavor. It's all about your preference. But I've never heard any bourbon drinker say their favorite pour of all time is an 80 proofer.
It's too bad Knob Creek doesn't release more cask strength products. The Rye is pretty good, but the bourbon would probably benefit from not being 'watered down' to 120 (not to mention some of the 100 proof products they've been churning out...*cough.. 15 year--100 proof--$130... wtf*). I think maybe their marketing scheme involves not sabotaging their Booker's game by offering cheaper barrel proof products in the Knob Creek line. If they offered a 15 year cask strength for $130 I'd probably buy that over Booker's all day.
Booker’s didn’t really show up for us in 2021. Really hoping they make up for in in 2022. And on the Knob Creek side, I agree! They need to put more barrel proof stuff out.
I'm giving up on bourbon hunting, all the bourbon featured on your videos, I would have to drive 150+ miles to find, making them cost much more than they're worth 🤨
While some craft distilleries choose the $100 price point as an indication of their "craftiness", generally speaking the Big Boys give you what you pay for. My experience has been that if JB, Four Roses, etc., are charging a premium dollar, you will receive a truly premium product. YMMV...
That's because it hasn't been resold 3 times to middlemen.
Try using a lighter on new KC bottles to gently warm the wax along the path of the pull tab. Makes it temporarily less brittle. Should prevent shrapnel 👍🏻
The KC 9 SiB is one of my favorites, especially at that price
I love the single barrel 9 yr. I’ve always been a makers person, and I still do love the makers cask strength but that single barrel 9 is amazing.
The 9 year is definitely my go to.. Where im at its $37 after taxes. Its not harsh and has a good taste, also have never had a hangover with this stuff if I over do it.. Knob Creek 9 is fantastic stuff.
OMG Sara is wearing the David Rose sweater!!!! amazing. made my day (along with the review ofc)
I recently purchased a 15 year old store pick 120 proof for $45 dollars. The neck pour was a big harsh, but after a few days I went back for another pour and WOW it was so much better. Definitely oaky and dark with a punch of proof on the front end, but really good especially for the price.
Cask strength $75 @ Total Wine in the Lexington KY area. Just got it today and I agree its great!!

EXCELLENT subtle David Rose reference in this video. Well played, Sarah.
Thank you for noticing :)
I love my 9 year single barrel, crossing my fingers I find that 12 year BP. Stuff usually shows up a few months late here.
having both in my whiskey cabinet, I would have to say I much prefer the 9 year. The 12 year has an overpowering oak bitterness that I don't like. For those of you who enjoy double IPAs, you may like it.

It's only money. You can't take it with you.

It’s so cool that you guys are honest.

Gonna gently point my fingers in your direction as to why my bourbon "cabinet" keeps filling up. Love you guys. Very fun to watch here in Canton, GA. My local store has a store pick Knob Creek I may have to get soon...
I agree. My bourbon trophy increase is your fault. 😅 That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. Love the channel and the passion.
Thank you.
Knob Creek is a really nice pour! I’ve bought three store picks and they have all been excellent! Cheers

Great review Chad & Sara! Always love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!🥃👍🇺🇸
I would rather wait to find a store pick single barrel that has more age. I currently have one that is 11.5 year single barrel
Love the Schitts Creek sweater Sarah!
In Canada were paying roughly $50 for the nine and $150 for the 12
Just bought a bottle of Cooper's Craft. Yes, I always buy Kentucky bourbon. It has to be Kentucky! Greetings from Bowling Green.

My problem is why pay 90 bucks for KC 12 year when you can spend 75-80 on Booker’s? Is it better than Booker’s?
Bookers isn’t single barrel
@@vinnier6 neither is kc 12 yrs

Just received a 12 year for 60th birthday. I was curious about yalll's opinion. I cannot wait to open and sip
Happy birthday!
You guys are spot on.

Knob 12 CS vs EC BP blind?

Great review! I am a Knob Creek fan, I will be searching this one out! Thanks for all your great content!
This review makes me feel much better about my purchase. Plan on opening it over the holidays. Cheers 🥃
Where I am at in Arizona it is only 65 that’s 10$ more than the single barrel. So the 12 sounds like a win win. Win
Can't get the 12 year in Canada....or at least Alberta. So I pick up the Single Barrel 9 year when it goes on sale. Still fantastic but I'm jealous of those who can get the 12 year.

Oh damn, I really like the Knob Creek 12 now I REALLY want to try this!
Knobs creek 9. One of the best Juice in a Jim beam bottle. 120.proof

I really like the 12-year 100 proof. So I’ll pick up 120 if I see it. Thx for the review!
Love you guys! Thank you for all your work! Happy 2021! Cheers!
We don't get barrel strength in Ohio. Just the regular versions.
So true opening it.

The new batch is at 124.3 proof.

That 12 year is $130 in my local store.
I love Chad and Sarah. I love boubonite. I love a fine whiskey. I appreciate all they do, But, I'm not interested in 100000 proof bottles!!!

Gotta find me the 12 barrel proof. Love the standard 12
Not sure if you have tried it yet... but yes.. the 12 year is GREAT. the 12yr cask strength will BLOW your mind. it takes the flavors to a whole different level.
I wouldn't pay over $100 for a knob creek 15 year cask strength, $75 to $80 would be a more realistic price range 😊
I mean put it on the rocks smoothest whiskey in my opinion
I only buy store picks so that I can get in good with the guys at the liquor store.
Does proof determine taste?

Knob Creek 12 is only $65 here... That is interesting
Edit... NVM. I figured it out. Cask Strength vs. 100 proof
