Gentlemen, as you’re blind tasting 1 to 5, a caption at the bottom of the screen for the whiskey you’re on would be wonderful! Helps me to compare notes and distinguish the different releases. As an added bonus, makes things easier to follow. Love the channel!

I would like to see y’all do this again as taste changes daily, for me anyway, and I’d like to see how yours changes. This really gets into the super high nuances of bourbon and how it’s made.. Great video. Kurt and Trenton together is awesome! Keep it up!

Now THIS is a blind taste test! Loved this video. Being surprised by what you picked when everything is revealed at the end is just so much fun! I was actually not surprised at all that the 18 year came in last place, though. With bourbon being aged in new white oak barrels, I think 18 years is getting pretty far past the point of diminishing returns, where the oak notes start to overpower most, if not all other notes that make bourbon/whiskey so delicious. I love the oak notes I get in various whiskeys when they're part of a well-balanced flavor profile. I was, on the other hand, quite surprised at where some of the other KC offerings landed in y'all's order of preference... Great job, guys!

KC 12 is readily available here (Florida, East Coast) for $60. That’s a fair price for a terrific bourbon. I can get the 15 and 18 online but the price is outrageous (not worth it to me). Blinds are a terrific way to humble yourself. I have been on this earth a long time. I still get fooled with blinds. I think when you pay $100+ for a bourbon, and you see what you are drinking, your mind can trick you into validating the cost. In a blind, you taste what you taste. That’s why I love doing blinds. For me, the good old KC 9 is perfect. It’s $31 here, 50% ABV. Can’t complain about that.

it is a real and scientifically proved phenomenon. observer bias actually changes the taste of something in your brain... if you expect it to taste better, it will. the same for audio... if you expect a particular singer/instrument/speaker is better, it will be. Blind testing is the only way to eliminate the observer bias. But in the end, who cares :)

It was fun for me to watch, and lets face it, any day being stumped at a bourbon tasting has GOTTA be better than the best day at work where you about knock yourself out. Just so happens that I was able to pick up the Knob Creek 9 year single barrel reserve 120 proof this last weekend. It was simply delightful, fabulous, fantastic all wrapped into one.

    Knob creek 12
    Rare breed
    Old forester 1920

Stagg jr and Elijah Craig barrel proof used to be my top two in that $60 price range but unfortunately those days are gone around me now.

The 18 yr in last place matches my intuituon. After about 15 years, most bourbons get too woody tasting. Some wheated bourbons can go 17 years but 18 and beyond is just losing bourbon and making inferior product. 12-15 yr is optimal for most mash bills. Great video guys!

Agreed. My only exception would be Calumet Farm 16 year which is superior to their lesser aged offerings. However as you said, it’s seems right on the cusp of being too woody/oakey.

I have some bottles that are expensive and when I drink them they taste great. But if I have them in a blind against less expensive whiskeys sometimes they they do not shine as bright. Suggestion is a powerful component to taste in many cases you think it is special you will justify it. Love the content can’t wait for the next video to drop.

    • @The_Profezor
      @The_Profezor ปีที่แล้ว +2

Probably worse than the power of suggestion is the issue with "elegance." In a blind, especially one with many bottles, the stronger whiskeys may edge out those that are more elegant with subtle complexities.

Good show. Blinds are funny. I did one with Woodford double oak, OF 1910 and Elijah Craig toasted barrel. They taste different when I have an individual pore, but difficult for me to substantially differentiate them in a blind. Without a blind, I would put 1910 at the top. In the blind, I picked the toasted barrel.

I enjoyed the video. Here Knob Creek 9 is the only one regularly available although on Nov 5 there are a number of bourbons being brought into the government stores including the Knob Creek 12 ($129.99 CDN) and the 18 ($234.99 CDN). Knob Creek was the very first bourbon I tried so I have a soft spot for it and still have one 375ml Non Age Stated at home. I picked up two at a local private liquor store (their last two) at a very good price (for here) and enjoyed the first one, makes me want to save the other.

Hellos fellow BC Knob Creek fan! I bought the 15 at the spring spirit release and am going for the 12 on Sunday. The 18 is just a little too much, and I've heard it's too oaky, but I look forward to doing my own blind with 4 of these. The 9 SiB was readily available on the island this summer, many private stores had it at a reasonable price. Hoping they can get some more in, but I ordered from Alberta just in case.

@@mees31 Yes, I agree that the 18 is too pricey. Since the Old Forester 1920 I was hoping for did not come in, at least where I am, I picked up the 12 as well.

Great Review 🐸👍✝️ only have tried the 9yr and the 9yr Single Barrel Reserve ✝️ like the 9yr SBR much more but the 9yr is also very good ✝️

Despite KC18 being last…it’s still a pretty solid pour!

Crazy results!! I have had the KC18 and it along with the WTMK Forgotten are in my top 3 bottles of 2022. Can’t wait to blind them in 2 weeks.

I do like nutty whiskey. My favorite is Russel’s Reserve Single Barrel. I think it has more complexity and better in the mouth feel. The KC 9 is a good whiskey, but I thought it lacks the complexity, the finish was short for me. I love “Sip it or Skip it” keep it up!

This was great and super useful. Both your top two were the same, and both your last place was the same. So i know to avoid the 18 year and buy the 12 and 15 year. Thanks!
No surprise the 18 came in last, bourbon doesn’t seem to age well past 15 years. That age bracket is the realm of good scotch whiskey.

It’s too bad you can’t add pics but I went to Total Wine which is just a big alcohol store near me but they carry small bottles on a lot of bourbons and based on some of your videos I was able to get 4 small bottles to try without the commitment of buying a large bottle and spending tons of money for something I may not like. They had an awesome selection, I ended up with 4, knob creek 9yr, old forester, Elijah Craig small batch and woodford reserve. I’m pretty sure they’re all 375ml but all together I was around 70 bucks which I was going to buy one bottle for 50ish.

Poured myself some KC 9 and searched SLB for this video. Makes me want to go get some more bottles.

Just watched this older video. My son and I ran pretty much the same blind a year ago. We did not have the 9yr single barrel, but otherwise the same. We came up with the same result. The 12 and 15 years were the best.

You should've put the KC rye and single barrel rye in there too to really throw a curve ball on the blind tasting.

Killing me to watch this because I LOVED the 15 year huge cherry flavors, I have such high hopes for the 18... its $289 msrp in Ontario and I'm waiting for the release..... now I'm torn....

Wow. I need to find the 15 year that I passed up this year and do this blind myself. I would've thought the 12 and 18 would be top 2.

Didnt even watch yet but did a similar blind about a yr ago. The 120proof 9yr came out on top. The 15 was a let down. Like eating tree bark.

May I suggest that you pull the lowest placing glass furthest away from the camera, and then move slightly closer toward the camera in order. In the end first will be closest and the viewers can visually see your order of picks

LOVE IT. Giving the people what the want!
Jimmy Russels wisdom reigns again. I remember him saying years ago that a bourbon peaks around 7-12 he sounds like he was from Mars when I heard it.
But I was applying Scotch perception to Bourbon. Obviously there are exceptions with Pappy but not all Rickhouses are made the same.
Can’t wait to try the 12 and after buying OF 1920 im afraid the thumbnail in the sidebar is going to tell me what I’ve been thinking. It’s overrated or lost a step? Damn I miss OF Signature.
