This was so exciting to watch Scott, I love how expressive your brushstrokes are, so much light and shadow here, and I really enjoyed the scraping technique at the end, it made the whole painting sparkle, I've not tried that before! Thanks so much for the shout out, much appreciated, I shall certainly be recommending your channel very highly to my subscribers next time I film!
Thanks Lois! You have to love a hake brush! Glad you liked it! Your paintings are just great! Hopefully lots of people check out your channel! Talk soon! 🙏

Hi Wendy! I’m really glad you like the work. I think Lous and I complement each other well. She also does a lot of work wet in wet but with a different style. I love her work. You should also check out Tony Smibert, he was my mentor for many years and is amazing. Thanks for watching and happy painting! 👍🙏
Scott I've only just found you on youtube! Love your work totally inspired. I'm new to abstract watercolour and I'm really enjoying exploring new ways to paint. Thank you for this tutorial I'm going to give this a go - awesome!
Hi Carol! Glad you’re enjoying the tutorials/demonstrations! Good luck giving it a go! Let me know if you have any questions about this or any other videos! Thanks for watching!!👍🙏
@@ScottSwinson thank you, you've really ignited my passion with watercolours. I had a go at re-creating your painting put it on my FaceBook page and one of my golfing buddies has commissioned a painting - wasn't expecting that!!
Amazing! Just starting watercolours and really want to do skies. The one part I don't understand is the tape going horizontal for the land mass? I thought it was to get a crisp like so that the blues below would be reflections, but then that was painted over and I got really confused. Please enlighten me! Thanks so much for posting these so we can observe process. ETA: Never mind, I see the demarcation now. My untrained eye saw that the shades were the same but upon second watching during the close up I see that the part below the tape is lighter. So neat!
I've just found your tutorials and love the way you paint. Especially important for me is how you do a second layer, which, until now, I've never succeeded with. I never realized you could rewet the paper and the paint already dried there wouldn't run!!! it's like you are painting on a whole new piece of clean paper with no problem. I thought i could only use pretty much "dry" paint and brush to add details, not use wet painting to continue the second layer, without ruining the first. Also LOVE the idea of using the cellotape to drawn straight lines..I would have thought it would remove the paint when being lifted, but I see it doesn't..Also, what do you use for the scraping away of paint to get the white line?.I'm going to be trying some of your techniques very soon in my own painting. Thank you so much.
Hi Scot just discovered your tutorials and really enjoying them, can you tell me if you mix the watercolour paints and put them in the tubs, Or do they come in the tubs never seen Watercolour paints in a tub before they’re so thick and creamy. I’m also subscribed to Lois Davidson I’m I should loosen up with the two of you. 😀
Hi Linda! I'm really glad you are enjoying the videos and that you have started to paint in watercolours! I just squeeze the paints into a bowel and mix them with water. In between sessions I let them dry out and then spray water in before my next session and recharge them prior to use! I like that I can grab different colours easily and paint with strong colours this way! Lois is great! That is a great combination! Cheers Scott
Thank you for all of your videos!! I have always painted in acrylic but have stopped doing art for a couple of years. I just recently got back into it but decided to try watercolor. I love your tutorials and they have inspired me to get back into painting. I want to buy the tubes of Windsor & Newton paints but not sure what colors to buy. What would you suggest? Like top 8 colors to purchase when just starting watercolor. Thank you so much your paintings are wonderful!
I think the top 8 colours I would want now would be: cobalt blue, light red (so I can mix the mix of cobalt blue with light red), yellow ochre or raw sienna, winsor blue (red shade) to mix with light red to get a lovely dark, cerulean blue, burnt umber, raw umber and alizarin crimson permanent. I probably the 8 I would get. I do love cobalt turquoise light and winsor red but there are many lovely colours! Hope that helps!
This looks absolutely sublime! It reminds me a lot of the paintings from the romanticism era. May I ask, if you maybe were inspired by this era or particular artists?
Hi Tamerov, yes I love that period and have spent many years studying JMW Turners works at the Tate Britian in London in the prints and drawings room. I love landscape, romanticism and the sublime! Thanks for watching and the question. 👍🙏
Love your work! Just wondering how your skies don’t turn green when playing around with yellows and blues, I’m struggling! Do certain blues stay cleaner than others??
The reason this does not turn green is a few things: I paint the cobalt blue around the yellow ochre, when I brush the cobalt blue over the yellow ochre I only brush over it once or twice not more than that. Also I bring in a very strong mix of cobalt blue snd light red into the yellow ochre so it really can’t influence that colour much as it is very strong (a thick mix). Hope that helps! If it is starting to go green I will stop and dry the whole thing very well and start again! 👍👍👍
Hi Edward I use either 3M magic tape or a cheaper version of invisible tape from Woolworths (Australian supermarket). I’m sure you would be able to get 3M magic tape. 👍
Oh my goodness, you are a wizard. There is such sweeping motion in this gorgeous and dramatic sky scene. Thank you!

Hi Jane! I’m really glad you like the channel! I do love doing layers of watercolour! I use a razor blade to scrape out the white line. 👍🙏
Thanks... Looking forward to more!
What tool are you using to scrape the paint off to get white? Are you doing it while the paper is still wet? Thank you!
Hi Ivy! I use a Stanley razor blade and a metal ruler. 99% of the time I do this technique with the paper completely dry! Happy painting! 👍🙏
