    This is a really simple watercolour landscape for beginners. I only really used two colours (paynes grey and burnt umber). This painting is done on a small scale which is a good way to start as a beginner. It is A5 size and done on Arches, 300gsm, medium, cold pressed paper. The hardest part is probably the wet in wet sky at the beginning but really you can't go wrong by putting it down and then leaving it alone. You can tell when I was painting this that I was still not really sure if the sky was working or not but it turned out fine. Sometimes you just have to trust that it will and leave it. You could use any other grey (I actually prefer the mix of cobalt blue and light red as for me it has more life in it and it also separates and I like that this gives the clouds almost like an aurora around them!).
    To wet the page I started with the round sable but that is really too small for my liking and so I changed to the 1 inch hake brush and then to the two inch hake brush to wet the page. So much easier with a larger brush. I then painted in the sky with the pure kolinsky round sable and then used the 1 inch hake brush with just gives wider strokes which I wanted. I then used the round sable for the foreground, the old fan brush for the trees, the round sable again for the distant mountains and the flay nylon brush for lifting out the water line. I then used the razor and ruler to scratch back into the paper.
    Paper: Arches 300gsm medium cold pressed
    Paint: Paynes grey and burnt umber (winsor and newton artist qualtiy) a tiny bit of yellow ochre but you don't need to do this
    Brushes: Round sable, 1 inch hake brush, 2 inch hake brush, old fan brush, flat nylon, ruler, razor, 3M magic tape and as per usual many tissues!
    Thanks for watching, happy painting!

    I live both of these colours and together they remind me of the Hartz range near Alice Springs. The earth colour is perfect. Can’t wait to have a go.

    Beautifully simple and effective Scott. The sky depends on how much water is on the page and how thick the paint is - a delicate balance. Mine are often disappointing. Do you have an idea where you want the clouds to be?

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Barbara, yes when I’m painting most of the time I have a rough idea of where I want the clouds to be. Generally clouds are more saturated at the top of the page and lighter at the bottom as they recede into the distance and become closer together unless it’s a sunrise or sunset which of course is brighter on the horizon! 👍👍

    I really enjoy your tutorials - since I am a beginner watercolorist, I find your style of teaching is unintimidating and quite beautiful in a simplistic way. I've discovered that the more I work at my painting the worse it becomes! I like the looseness you give to your paintings. What kind of brush did you use for the trees? Keep the paintings coming - Thank you!

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marilyn! Yes watercolour can easily turn to mud! That's why it is good to use a limited palette or even just use one colour at times! The brush was an old hacked up fan brush. It makes interesting marks. you can make one with a pair of scissors. Cheers Scott

      @ScottSwinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peggy! It is lovely and simple I agree! Paintings don't need to be complicated it is often easy to forget that I find for me! In terms of Aussie Bush colours I'm not the best at mixing those! I often use the earth colours mixed with blues to get something akin to the aussie bush such as cobalt blue and raw umber or french ultra and burnt umber. Cheers Scott
