I avoid flying any 787 Dreamliner at all costs purely because of the potential for the windows to be centrally locked. The very point of these windows were that they were around 30% larger so as to offer a better flying experience. Windows & shades should never be compulsorily locked or pulled down by crew - if you wish to sleep in daylight, wear eye shades. The Dreamliner promised a renaissance but in fact destroyed the joy of flying simply because of the central locking window feature. For each & every flight I take, I’d rather switch off the IFE & marvel at the world outside & below. I was looking forward to travelling Air Maroc next month for the first time in thirty years but will be rebooking with BA as a result of this video so thank you.
Same here. I was going to fly to Perth on Qantas from LHR - but saw reviews of the crew locking the windows and instead flew Singapore Airlines via Singapore. I will actively avoid the 787 purely on this basis. I don't care how good the airline is or the price, I don't want someone else controlling what I can and can't look at out of the window!
Yes. I NEVER book this aircraft unless no alternative. VS are also known for locking down windows. I choose the window to see the world and know that my holiday has begun. Even worse, when it is dawn outside - they remain blank. BUT when they want to wake you up, there is an electronic 'sunrise' invented by the kiddiwinks asked to make something 'new and funky'. This year we have to be on a VS 789 and the trip will be horrible - despite the fact that we shall be in Upper Class.
I work on the Boeing 787 as the senior cabin crew member, I never allow crew to lock out the windows day or night, I also frequently monitor the control panel for them, and unlock them if I discover they have been locked by other crew members. It’s part of the service standards that the customer at the window chooses on all types, except for taxi , take off or landing when they should always be set to clear.
Back in the days of yore (mine anyway, the 90s), I don't remember this "look, all window blinds down, because" edict at all on daytime flights. Yeah, I get that some want to kip all the way there (how they manage this on a flight starting in the morning I do not know), but there's also some, especially on long haul flights, who want to do the "resetting my body clock to my destination time" thing.
Two priorities on board for me…window control and fresh air vents. Window control especially in economy as it’s more likely you won’t sleep and the views can help pass time.
I would not be happy if I couldn’t see out the window. That’s my most favorite thing to do and my biggest memory of flying. Seeing New York City at night from the air (the only way to see New York in my opinion) and watching thunderstorms in the distance over Texas.
So glad that you try the local food options. Honestly have no idea why some flight vloggers seem terrified to eat anything than what they'd eat at home (and then complain that it't not as good as the food they're used to.)
@@mike48084Nice bit of racism there . How many Brazilian restaurants in India ? How many white chefs in Chinese kitchen/ restaurants within China or outside it ?
I agree with mask but some people aren't use to them and can't sleep with them. That is why I think they dimmed the lights and shades so people may sleep
I have never flown on a Dreamliner but the ability for the crew to lock the windows puts me off. As a nervous flyer i like to look out of the window to settle my nerves, along with a large G&T!
I absolutely hate it when the crew decides to take away your ability to look out the window especially on west bound flights. I want to use the sun to adjust to the timezone. Plus, I love looking down on areas I'll probably never travel to like Greenland.
I have printed out AA’s written statement/policy about not locking out the windows on their 787s and will happily go “full Karen” on any flight where they attempt to do so. I’ve only had to do more than ask for them to be unlocked four times during my AA travels but physically handing them this “reminder” has made all the difference during those four flights.
I have to say, Paul, as someone fromt Eastern Canada, I'm beyond pleased to know you can say "Newfoundland" properly vs what seems like 99% of other non-Canadian TH-camrs lol
Many airlines do this and it annoys the tar out of me as well. Plus being on two Boeings in a day would make me avoid that trip. That’s called bravery.
@@xkr510 We all know Boeing doesn't have the best rep lately, but they've been making safe planes for decades and I'm sure they're fixing their errant ways.
HATE when crew lock the windows dark. At any time, but especially on a day flight. For those that want to nap - use the provided eyeshades (that's what they're for), or bring your own better ones. It's really hard to arrive somewhere after a daytime flight when it's been dark the whole way, notwithstanding the joy of views from 32,000ft!
@@Feeldartcorp One of the most spectacular things I have ever seen was Greenland from just under 40k on an IST-ORD flight. Got it on a clear early winter day with the right light, and the mountains shimmering off the coast was jaw dropping.
I'm getting to the stage where if I had a choice between a 787 and any other type, I'd go for the other type. That is purely down to the fact that I like a window seat because it has a window next to it and I like to look out of it. If the cabin crew block the light, all you have is a wall.
It should be up to the customer whether or not they want the windows 'open' or 'dark', I mean, you pay the money for that window seat, so you should have the choice whether or not you want to look out of it. If someone in the cabin doesn't want daylight, then they should use the eyeshades.
I can see the case for windows darkened on some cases - I've been on midsummer overnight flights on northerly routes where it doesn't get dark even at midnight - but otherwise, windows open in the daytime. After 25 years, I still carry a grudge about a flight on which the crew made everyone close the shades as we flew along the coast of Greenland on a cloudless day. This was before seatback screens, and the daylight was washing out the image on the pop-down screen. Apparently some people thought that watching the movie "What Do Women Want" starring Mel Gibson was more entertaining than a thousand miles of fjords and glaciers.
I'd also be aggravated at the crew blacking out the windows on the entire plane, especially in upper class where a bright window might only bother 1 or 0 people! I think I've seen some peoples' videos where a 787 only locked it at 50% dark instead of as far as it goes.
Thanks Paul! I will be flying RAM to from Casablanca in October, economy. But now I have an idea what to expect on the ground and in the air! Thanks again! 😊
Those windows are my least favourite thing on the 787 and another reason I strongly prefer Airbus. The cabin crew do have the ability to unlock individual windows on request if you can find a cooperative one.
I don’t mind the crew dimming the windows, but perhaps limit that by half or two-thirds. The narrowed bandwidth still helps with lower lighting and would let passengers take it from there. It is still pretty dark and gives some form of control back to people who prefer a better view.
Windows are there to be used ! I'm lucky, my better half allows me to sit by the window, she usually has her head buried in a book while flying ! Last time we flew to New Orleans, I was lucky enough to catch an Emirates A380 flying across our path, about 1,00 feet below.... was able to take video footage of the event ! 😃

Great flight. From first flight with RAM in this video, just realized that between Morocco and Algeria the border is still closed, even the Moroccan Aircraft avoiding Algerian Airspace. Good afternoon Paul from the United Kingdom it’s 1255 here when I’m watching this video I don’t understand why have they locked the windows. And I totally disagree with it when I’m flying. I like to see what’s going on outside the food I would give it up 5 out of 10 but great video as usual cannot wait to see your next video.
I wonder if the dreamliner has the option to lock out just the brightest "fully open" option for the windows. Allowing one to look out the window but without the full brightness disrupting those around would be maybe a happy compromise. I'll have to ask a flight attendant next time I'm onboard! Fun video, thanks for sharing!
Can't look out of the window, "window seat" is next to the aisle (making it an aisle seat), seat not private - completely open to people walking toward it along the aisle, lamb tagine looks like it had already been eaten once. I think I'll give Royal Air Maroc a miss. In fact, I'll never fly on a Boeing 787 because the risk of suffering blacked-out windows is too great. Oh, just a thought... why was the window in the rest room dark - who were they expecting to be looking in? Another great report Paul.
The cabin decoration is more Tamazight (don't say Berber !) than islamic or arabic. The traditional writing system is quite geometric - letters are triangles, circles, etc.
Looks great Paul, but can we talk about that window in the bathroom? Are we so pre conditioned to privacy that we close the shade even at 30,000 feet? Exactly who's looking?
Thanks for another great video, Paul. Curious whether the window blackouts are the norm for RAM, or whether this was a little 'creativity' by the cabin crew. Admittedly, I'm slightly irked by the "always one" pax on a mid-haul who insists on flooding their whole cabin section with daylight, but I'd take this rather than surrendering my freedom to peep out! (If the cabin's dark, I'll crack my blind by an inch or two, just so I can enjoy what's visible outside.) I wonder if any passengers who suffer from severe claustrophobia might start freaking out unless transparency was restored, perchance demanding the aircraft be diverted on medical grounds if the crew refused....... As for face mist, where would we be without it?! Reminds me of the "pillow spray" that Caledonian Sleeper used to provide in their amenity kit... though I still have my unopened little bottle, in case I'm ever feeling wild!
I would avoid any flight on 787s for the very reason of compulsory windows being darkened. I want to look out ... that's why I enjoy travels. Despite this comment, I must accept that most people don't seem interested to look out ... sad really ! I think one reason could be that crews don't want to be disturbed ; I would be interested to hear the opinion of a crew member on any airlines on this subject . Why do they do this ?
Re the windows;wasn't there a camera viewer at your seat? I like looking out but oddly understand that as some airlines want to condition passengers for their destination. There's nothing worse than some inconsiderate passenger having the bright light coming through the cabin when the body clock thinks it's should be sleeping. Qantas whom I've travelled with did that to;giving the option to briefly and only partly lighting the window before quickly defaulting to the dark setting.

As for face mist, where would we be without it?! Reminds me of the "pillow spray" that Caledonian Sleeper used to provide in their amenity kit... though I still have my unopened little bottle, in case I'm ever feeling wild!
Wouldn’t travel that airline based on the windows ??
Paul, there’s a reason why they forgotten and let’s keep it that way
No it isn't worth it! Id be furious if I couldn't control my window! Also welcome to NY! I live only a few miles up the road from JFK
Please try out some RED wines and SCOTCH whiskies on flight mate...
Great vlog as always! I thought RAM was a dry airline. What do I care. I do not drink anyway. Lol! Keep up the good work. Be safe!
Isn't the 787-900 1-2-1 but the 787-800 2-2-2? Important difference as they are both Dreamliners.
Why do they black out the view??? Are they hiding somerthing? Super video, Paul.
I can remember when you were extremely happy about hitting 100,000 subscribers. good job.
Why would they lock the windows anyway, what is their reasoning? If they are going to do that, I'd expect a reduced cost for my window seat.
They lock the windows hoping that all the passengers will sleep so they can sit on their arses doing nothing....
My thoughts exactly!
