    Great video. Additional info:
    1. Wi-Fi is now free for all Krisflyer members regardless of class of travel as long as the number is on the boarding pass. But even if you forget to include it, you can simply ask the crew for a code and they'll happily provide it.
    2. Amenity kits are available upon request. The pouches come in 3 different colours as far as I know.

My wife and I did this flight in 2004 in the Airbus A340 ER. Watching this really took us back. We could only afford Premium Economy so neither of us got any real sleep and it took days to get over the jet lag. But wow, what an amazing flight.
We flew from Singapore on a similar route to you but came back right over the Nth Pole. Well, within 200 miles of it.

@@LGVRhin-Rhone I don’t remember them specifying whether it was a 500 or 600, I remember it only having the designation ER to denote extended range. It was likely a special build like the current A 350 being used for the same route. Like the current route, it was only premium economy and business class, presumably to allow it to take on enough fuel without exceeding the maximum take-off weight for the type. It fairly lumbered up the runway on take-off.

Ten years ago, we flew Singapore Business Class from Houston to Singapore back when they had a fuel stop in Moscow - they now stop in Manchester. The return trip took about 25 hours, and the absolute worst part was the 90 minute layover in Moscow. The seats were comfortable, and the food and service were outstanding.

    Great video Paul.
Have done SYD-YVR too many time to count and in every class and I would agree with most of your advice in getting through a long haul flight (though my longest is 16 hours not 18).
I would add 1) avoid caffeine (coffee, tea or coke) until you are about to land / wake up 2) pack something to knock you out - even just come cold and flu tablets 3) invest in some decent noise cancelling headphones and listen to ambient / white noise when trying to sleep 4) if you are flying economy, make sure you bring your own neck pillow, eye mask and some snacks and 5) lastly, never skip a meal!

Having flown Singapore Airlines in Business Class on the A380, 777 and A350, I can attest to the amazing service, quality of everything you encounter and that having a lie flat bed is the total game changer. I've done lots of long haul in Economy (LHR - AMS - BKK - SYD in one go for example or AKL - LAX, LHR - SFO, LHR - HKG) and it's brutal. Hence for my last long haul I decided to push the boat out for business class. It was worth every penny and more. In fact it made my trip so utterly amazing that the getting there and back is one of the highlights, rather than 'endurance to be born'. My book the cook favorite is Lobster Thermidor - absolutely bloody marvellous washed down with Chablis. Also Singapore Airlines Singapore Sling is delicious. I'm envious of you doing this trip - not for the getting to New York but getting to spend 18 hours in SQ J class!

I've done the opposite direction in Premium Economy, and with favorable winds it was "only" 17.5 hours. The service was excellent, and I was able to sleep as much as I wanted, due to the excellent recline and comfortable seats. (I can't imagine a flight of this length in regular economy.) I should note, though, that I find the PE seats on EVA a lot more comfortable, so the next time I do this flight, if it is in PE, it will be in EVA with a transfer in Taipei. But still, a very good flight, and minimal jet lag even in PE.

I think in Business, the length of the flight is less important. I've done 14 hours (AUH-SYD and back) and loved it. P.S. A tip of mine for long-haul flying, especially such a long-haul flight is simply to be prepared, doing things such as staying well hydrated, getting up to walk around throughout the plane, even in the air and making sure to look out the window and not just stared to TV for hours on end, there’s nothing worse for jet lag than an eye strain induced headache! 🤕

Using the sun to help you can be challenging when you are on a US domestic flight. My last trip before COVID, my return home, was from FLL - ATL (short stop for me) - LAX ( with about a 4-hour stop over) - SYD. I barely had time to use the Delta Lounge in ATL. Fortunately, Virgin Australia passengers use the Emirates Lounge. (I so much miss VA on that route. They were the best airline on that route, IMHO). I was in Business on the VA flight, so I was in domestic First Class on Delta.
On the longish sector from ATL - LAX, which was a narrow-bodied Jet. I had worked out when I needed to sleep, doze and eat (although I the great food at VA, I failed there😅). This also meant I needed periods with light, FLL - LAX. Even on domestic flights, DL darkens the cabin. I had a window seat on the left side. So I opened my blind. I forgot to check, so I asked my neighbour if that was OK and having any impact on his TV. All good from his side. A lady across the aisle, in the aisle, seat kept singling for me to close my blind. Checking where the light was going, I noticed no impact on their screens or seats, so I quietly told her I needed to have it open to see daylight as part of my body clock management.
She was having none of that and called for the Purser/Senior FA and complained to her and demanded that I be told to shut my blind. The FA went up the galley for a minute and then came down to me, asking if I would shut my blind as the woman on the other side was not coping with the light.
I told her about my trip, and in managing my body, I wanted the blinds open to have constant daylight. She completely understood and fed that back to the woman who was getting angry. The FA came back to me and asked if there was some compromise, and she suggested that I close the blind at least half way down, and even lower if possible. I agreed to that, but the woman was still not happy. The FA told her that is going to become outfor the rest of the flight.
I can’t remember what it was in our seat pocket, something about A3 size laminated (not the safety card). So, for the rest of the trip, she held the card at shoulder height. She regularly glared at me seriously. She was still miserable even when, not long after agreeing with the FA to do the best I was comfortable with, I had the window open by less than a quarter so I could see the ground or clouds from my seat.
I must admit I did have some naughty thoughts about how her arm would be at the end of the trip.
Paul and others, do you have any suggestions if I am caught with a ‘Karen’ again?
I must admit I hate the airlines wanting all the windows closed during the daytime.

You are 100% correct regarding the service, the food, the IFE, where I cannot agree is with the seat. Last year I had 3 SFO-SIN-DPS-SIN-SFO flights book with SQ, after the 2nd on I cancelled the ticket and went with QR. The simple reason is, I am 6'3 and I have these strange things called feet. Sitting slightly diagonally in the seat wasn't really an issue, however my US size 13 feet just did not fit into those tiny cubby holes. In that regards the the seat on the 787-1 is far superior.

Now imagine that trip in economy! That room rate wasn’t that bad considering it included a meal. I had bad jet lag just returning to Miami from London a few weeks ago, I can’t imagine a flight that long. It was delayed three hours, so it made the trip a bit longer. An expat in Florida.

Hi Paul first time watching your channel. Regarding your question on amenity kit on SQ business class, you can actually request for it if your flight is more than 6 hours. SQ stopped giving Business Class passengers amenity kits to cut wastage. But they are not going to deprive you of a kit if you need it - you just need to ask. Thanks for taking us on your journey. Good video work you have there.

Been flying internationally since Jan 1980. In those days the rule was get drunk at the back of the plane flirting with the air hostesses. Wake up feeling rough but it didn't matter. Later I found that I never got jet lag so long as I got enough sleep. Later still with regular Asia to US flights I would be having an afternoon nap every day. All I did then was to extend the afternoon nap after the time zone change to become the night sleep and shorten the previous night sleep into the new afternoon nap. These days a lay flat seat is essential for me. I didn't see how flat your seat was.

Great review. I’ve spent 18 hours on a train (Amtrak’s Auto Train) which, in a sleeper car, is really not so bad. I would imagine the time change is the real kicker for this flight. At least Singapore Airlines’ meal service is far, far superior to Amtrak’s!

Trains in general are more comfortable than planes. Though some European inter-city trains are getting a bit snug in standard class these days. Though 2 people in an Amtrak roomette might still be a little snug on legroom. Amtrak sleeper trains are also insanely expensive, like double the price of an OBB Nightjet sleeper train in Europe.
