Very happy you used a service that was a lifeline for me when I stayed in Shetland, keep up the great videos Paul, also don’t know why but MV Hjatland for me is a better ferry for service
Haha! I was thinking exactly the same thing 🤣 I’d like to see them doing a few side-by-side trips comparing different classes and different itineries 👌
Brilliant to see you up my way and glad the islands put on some decent weather for you! Well done getting all the way up to Unst as well, different world up there eh!
the problem with the executive cabins is they are right at the front of the ship. Which is ok on a flat calm night and an absolute nightmare in the slightest bit of motion. My top tip to anyone booking this trip is, if you think you might suffer from motion sickness in the slightest, avoid the executive cabins!
You can see why they moved the crew cabins to the new units on the upper decks towards the aft, plus as the night barman I was constantly kept awake with unloading and loading on the car deck which was directly underneath, bearing in mind most of the crew are sleeping during the night. The constant banging every time we hit waves kept day shift awake.. after a couple of weeks it was very trying.. 😂
Though now retired, I used to work in Hotel Management for over 40 years, so this is one similar concept I'd not sampled at all, and I was really impressed with what you showed. Until quite a few years ago, an ex-colleague of mine from a past hotel, actually worked for the same Ferry company in the role of Hotel Services Manager (or similar). Great to see what type of operational style he worked with.
Fabulous seeing you on Northlink Ferries, I used to work on the sister vessel mv Hjaltland, starting off as a steward then worked as the night barman right through the night until 6am.. they used to be better before Serco took over the catering..I think the cabin you stayed in used to be crew cabins, (forward) before they built new cabins a few decks above. The fish and chips are absolutely superb 😊
Very amazing Paul! I always find it interesting in some summer places where it doesn’t get dark when in reality it’s 9pm without it even looking anything close to it
Lovely video. I visited the Shetland Islands in 1985, albeit in a far less comfortable ship - a tanker from New Jersey, USA, on a monthlong round trip.
I've flown there often enough on my way to the oilfields, always hoping for a free stay, sometimes happens because of grounded helicopters. But never happened for me, never got beyond the airport.
This looks a huge improvement from the only time I used the ferry, around thirty years ago, when my helicopter flight to Aberdeen was indefinitely delayed by fog. I had to spend the night in a chair, but at least it was direct to Aberdeen, not calling at Kirkwall. I had one flight that landed at Unst and someone said that it was the only place where the sheep try to get on the helicopter.
Brought back lots of memories, in fact I thought you were in the same room as me, but I was in 421 haha. close. What a great place, I wish I had more time to explore further. My original trip was canceled due to covid, so when I rescheduled I only had a few days. Sill people should go if they can, it's an amazing place! Cheers for the video!
Wow, this is exactly the same trip that I took. I had a holiday cottage at Hermaness looking across Birrafirth. It was a trip of a lifetime. With the white sands beaches, terquose waters, and bright sun, you could be mistaken for thinking that you were in the Caribbean. If it were not for the temperature. We then walked to the cliff that faces to the lighthouse.
I went to Shetland a couple of years ago. Skaw beach on Unst is worth a detour, as is Sumburgh Head (you have to drive across the airport runway to get there) on the mainland.
This looks like an epic trip, Paul. It’s amazingly affordable too (I expect the train from the south of the uk cost more!) You chose a perfect day for travel as well.
EasyJet flights to Aberdeen are reasonably priced from London, cheap connecting bus from the airport to Union Square bus station which is literally right next to the ferry terminal
I was looking for Steve and Alisa lol, your cabin is very nice, really clean looking, food looking tasty,Maybe Steve Marsh has already filmed ,Ship seems so nice, 😊
Really enjoyed that Paul living in Kent it seams so far away and never stepped foot in Scotland but the ferry looks a brilliant trip 👍 one for next year thanks for sharing
If you go to Orkney and Shetland, they feel and look like completely different places (Orkney generally flat and green fields everywhere), Shetland hilly and brown heather everywhere), plus the dialect different in both islands from each other (in Orkney they say Piddie for small, whilst they say Pirie for small in Shetland!) 😂
This looks a great trip to do, the cinema is very well priced at £5.50. I had a look at their website & there is an option for what they call pods - reclining seats with tables & device recharge points.
Just do what the locals do, take a sleeping bag and sleep in the Forward Bar which closes at 11pm (only open during the summer season - you can still sleep either on a comfy chair or the floor), does resemble a youth hostel, but it works. You don’t really get disturbed as only the night steward doing their duties during the night.
Amazing video, you were lucky with the weather. This ferry trip is on my bucket list. Too bad the ferry doesn't also go to my hometown Bergen. The distance between Bergen and Lerwick is almost the same distance as between Aberdeen and Lerwick
Great video i've enjoyed it very much. The ship looks very familiar to the ones my wife and I used to take from the Stena Line from Hook of Holland to Harwich. Just great.
Great video. I did this crossing in 2013 (and on the Hrossey as well!). We were doing a cycling tour of Shetland. I'd love to go back, and to Fair Isle too!
That intro. Was sure was going to be the inverse !!!! Brilliant. Better than that worse cruise co in uSa first class ! That was one clean cruise. Cough
Paul, that menu is not reasonably priced, that is cheap, 12 quid for fish and chips, on a ferry, that is great value, take a look at the Irish ferries prices for a comparison.
Hi, I'm a Shetlander and also have friends in Faroe. When you visit Shetland, a word of warning because SSEN have torn the place apart with a massive(103 turbines) wind farm. Faroe is on another level though for beauty.
You mention a lot about this being nicer than it "needs" to be. I would disagree. The base fare is heavily regulated (politicians have to decide to increase them) and this fare alone would surely come nowhere near covering operating costs. The nice bits are absolutely core to how Northlink is viable, because on the whole people are happy to spend their money on the extras because it's a nice environment and said extras are good quality and reasonably priced. Obviously seat vs cabin would be the exception to this rule (if you're making the return crossing say, twice a month, four cabins is a lot of money), but the cabins themselves are profitable and would be less profitable if the ship were less nice.
Glad to see you switch it up and ride ferries!! Looks fun and you should take the ferry from Seattle WA to Alaska it's got really great food and takes 7 days !!
Paul not sure you are going in the right direction in doing the same trip as Steve Marsh..think you should try to come up with more original adventures..
Thanks but this is a monetised hobby for me and I’ve always wanted to go to Fair Isle. The beauty of doing what I do is I can just do it :-) I don’t care what other videos people put out.
@philliproberts5594 I like watching different travel vlogs even visiting the same place. It comes down to their own perspective and experiences, that is why I like Paul's and Steve's channels for different reasons. Maybe you need to not knit pick and just at enjoy it.

I can’t stop myself looking for Steve Marsh onboard…😂
He was only on this route a few weeks ago wasn’t he?
@@MrGreatplum incorrect he did the freight ferry this is the normal roro ferry
Yes. You can actually spot the freight ferry a couple of times in this video too :-)
@@garethsmith2250- he took it when he went to Foula earlier in the summer.

Congratulations on being the first youtuber to get a cabin on this ferry!
Thank you Paul for taking us along. I believe I would love such an experience.

I have been a subscriber for 2years and you never fail to show me so many amazing videos keep up the amazing videos ❤🇺🇲
Thank you so much!
What a great trip, finally you try this ferry. Fortunately, less storm en route, so everything is perfect.
Muckle Flugga! That's what I now intend to say to avoid swearing.
This is the first time I've heard of someone consulting the shipping forecast instead of listening to it to fall asleep.
Loved this Paul!
Your occasional non aircraft videos are always a very interesting watch. Worth waiting for!
That was really cool to watch! Thank you for sharing your experience with us ✌🏻

Excellent video, Paul. Certainly something to consider for the summer months in future!
Nice, but now do it in Winter, with no cabin and in a storm! I enjoyed it, and I really want to go again. Such lovely people there.

Whenever I hear "communal shower" I automatically think of a shared one - like in prison. I hope that's not the case on ferries though!
Watching 'Porridge' I learned the prison showers have a different kind of "ferries".
I see a BN2, I immediately like!
Good taste!’

Happy and glorious…
Is that where the show Shetland is filmed?
You checking reminds me of Mrs. Bale's shipping forecast. Have you tried ferries in Japan?
Paul, that menu is not reasonably priced, that is cheap, 12 quid for fish and chips, on a ferry, that is great value, take a look at the Irish ferries prices for a comparison.
I had a look at the menu... nearly €9 for oatmeal porridge, €20 for fish & chips... wow.
£12 - It costs nearly that for a large cod and chips at my local takeaway!
The ferry to Shetland is on my bucket list! Hope to do it in the next year or two. Have you ever gone to the Faeroe Islands?
Hi, I'm a Shetlander and also have friends in Faroe.

Great vlog as always! Come to my country and you can 11 degrees from 90 deg. true north. Just saying. Keep up the good work. Be safe!
I wonder what you’d make of the Rotterdam to Hull Ferry 🚢 😊

Coin operated arcade?? Looks like it says free play in the video 🤔🤔
Xavier, ha! You share a middle name with another traveller, Michael Denzil Xavier Portillo.
I imagine Stockholm< sweden, is closer to Lerwick than London, never mind "neighbour" Oslo.
Where were the ponies?
Xavier?
Awful if you don't get a cabin... often not available at short notice.
Hold on. You’re a Son of a Derry Man and he gave you Xavier as a middle name ?????? Brilliant if unconventional.

The “final bit of business” I would take care of prior to disembarking would not be a car. Especially after a couple of cups of coffee.
