I love that look. They hired architects who KNOW what they're doing. The appearance is clearly retro but not overwhelming. On the other hand, they also made sure it was noticeable and that's what makes the room look great. Too often, architects go so lightly on a certain theme that it winds up looking like it was slapped together overnight and suddenly had one or two things changed just before they hand the guest the room key!
The ferry from Bilbao (Spain) to Rosslare (Ireland) takes 30 hours! Very comfortable ship. In March 2023 I had to make an emergency trip, but strikes in France meant no flights and no fuel for a drive to Cherbourg to take a shorter sea route. And yes, the voyage across the Bay of Biscay lived up to its reputation. But the ship was very stable and minimised any motion discomfort. I have often used the Cherbourg/Dublin route. That takes 24 hours. Note I should have mentioned that I live near the Spanish frontier, and, by chance had a full tank for the car to make it easily into Spain where fuel was readily available.
I was about to say I thought the ferries to/from Spain and the UK and Ireland were longer than this route. I regularly use the Santander to Portsmouth route and that is longer than 24 hours and the operator, Brittany Ferries, call it a "cruise" ferry.
You should try some of the Ferries in the Baltic Sea! Viking Glory, Viking Grace, Viking Cinderella, Silja Symphony and Silja Serenade are a must for any ferrytraveller!
You should try Havila ferries in Norway, brand new ships with classic Scandinavian interior design. And stunning Norwegian scenery included with your ticket.
I've done that route many times -- the last time was the opposite direction on that same ferry, though, walking down that entire zig-zag at midnight! I was in the owner's suite also -- fantastic monetary deal and so spacious! It was great fun :-)
If you really want a ferry with views, weather but ordinary but okay food and accommodation try Navimag from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt or reverse. 4 days 3 nights. 100mph blasts, fog, flat calm, 5m swell on the Pacific and blazing sun. All in the one trip.
The memories! I took this trip - the other way, but still - back in 2021 when I was on a month long Euro road trip in my Lincoln Town Car. I stayed in the same kind of cabin, and enjoyed the trip very much. Very cool to see Paul doing this trip!
I went with this ferry company a few times from Ancona to Patras, and once we had a room in front of the ship! It was like we were the captain, very cool! I think we were upgraded, because the room was HUGE. Like 3 times the size you have. It was in the corner, and looking at the map, it seemed the largest they have.
You should try the Color line ferries from Kiel to Oslo, Color Magic and Color Fantasy. They are pretty big. The suites are certainly bigger than on this ferry.
Those arcade machines were what is known as 'Pandora's Box' which have thousands of preloaded retro games. All of the KOF were different versions of King of Fighters. Apologies for the nerd interlude!
Great trip. Just realized this route exists, since as far as I know, only domestic ferry serve both cities, like Rome to Sardinia and Barcelona to Balearic Island.
You need to try Finnlines (Gramaldi own them) between Finland and Sweden... The Finncanopus and Finnsirius make this ferry look very behind the times. Plus, the journey through the Archipelago is an experience not to be missed 👍🏽
Or any cruiseferry between Sweden and Finland for that matter. He should really try Viking Glory or Silja Symphony/Serenade which are more proper cruise like in terms of service and amenities. :)
Great looking trip. Back in the early 90s I did Harwich to Gothenburg which I recall being 24 hours each way and I remember being amazed that a ship had a casino, a movie theatre, restaurants, a disco and more! Sadly I see it is no longer running
Ferries' size is measured in gross tons. Tankers in dead weight tone, container ships in TUE (20 feet containers) and military ships in deplaciment. A ferry's gross tonnage is not a measure of weight but a measure of surface space. The largest ferries in the world are Color Line's sisters Color Magic, which measures approx. 75,000 GT. Cruise Barcelona has a GT of 63000. But of course she is the longest and a very impressive ship. Thanks for the upload / Adam, Sweden
All cruise terminal should have a terminal building equipped with conveying pavement, cafe, toilets etc for passengers to sit down and rest while waiting to get on board the ship. It's inconsiderate if not brutal to have to walk that far with the luggage or especially for seniors and people with toddlers or disabilities.
I wonder if that's why they aren't as popular as trains. I'd rather take a train than a ferry if I have to walk that far in the brutal heat if the departure city is hot. Note: just because the city is by the beach doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be cool.
Boarding via the stern ramp and an escalator to the main decks is fairly standard on many Mediterranean/Aegean routes - saves the need for a passenger gangway.
10 years ago we were booked to go from Holyhead to Dublin with Irish Sea ferries, but come the day of their ships were not sailing. They rebooked us on the Stena ferry, and it was definitely 1990s mall vibes on board. Rough going so we pretty much just parked ourselves in one spot with a nice view and tried to not lose our breakfast… since eating lunch was out of the question.
It's a mystery to me why operators like ferries consistently get bad reviews for a certain aspect, and do nothing about it for months, years or never. If they don't improve, it's usually a sign they've got some form of monopoly on that route.
@@largol33t1 Yes, some of them. Air Canada gets accused of being semi-crap because it's got an almost stranglehold on the Canadian domestic/to America market. In Asia, the airlines tend to be really good due to the intense competition.
Their main business is carrying trucks and supplies across the sea. Truck drivers are not wealthy costumers, so they really do not need to offer luxury. All in all paying 70 Euros ferry fare is not that cheap either, considering flying is just 2 hours.
Great video mate! I love all the ferries ⛴️ in the Mediterranean they’re so cool! Especially for me as an American 🇺🇸 I find ferries especially large ones that seem like cruise ships to me and they rock! I hope to do more of them in the future someday considering I’ve been on a massive ferry cruise once from Rome well Civitavecchia to Sorrento all within Italy 🇮🇹 but still super cool! Hi Paul, I’ve seen the Italian ship that has sleeper train cars driven onto it - living in Manchester UK and having family in Ireland, I’ve sailed on the Irish Ferries and Stena Adventurer from Holyhead to Dublin for many years and my favourite vessel is the Irish Ferries Ulysses, especially in the Club Class Lounge but also the cabins which are really nice 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪❤️
Two observations, first they had laminate flooring in the corridor outside the cabins, that would make the noise echo. Secondly as someone who has regularly traveled the 12 to 14 hour overnight journey from Aberdeen to Lerwick in Shetland, there is complimentary tea and coffee inside the cabins unlike what you had. The first class offering on Northlink Ferries actually look better than this ferry in the video, never thought I’d say that..actually I think Northlink Ferries look better than this and their food is superb and decent price.
The "fancy" dinner (of course just €30) didn't impress me much in the menu (which I guessed at, in Spanish/Italian) nor in photos but I'm glad Paul enjoyed it. I suppose to a degree you're paying for waiter service and hopefully fun singing entertainment! Often on an airplane you get a much more florid menu and more disappointing food in cramped quarters!
Only one sea fairing quip ??? 🤔😵 I'm disappointed, there was plenty more to be caught !! The food didn't look quite cruise ship standard, but that was to be expected.... at least you didn't clam up about it 😂 There seemed to be enough to do on board for 24 hours. Shame the night club was not open, you have danced a sea shanty 😂 And you kept us waiting to the bitter end for your rundown of costs..... 😮 Pricey, but worth it, Paul 👍
Even after booking the most expensive cabin, €319 is a steal. There are hotels whose nightly room rates are more than that and don't have as many amenities as that ship.
In both Rome and Barcelona, it was minimum 300 eur for somewhere you'd actually want to stay. The ferry at that price (esp minus senior discount) made so much sense. Grim food on the whole and my hydro tub had bathtub ring so not sparkling clean. Better than the GRIMaldi ship Salerno to Palermo tho
I tried a few years ago the sister ferries Europa Palace and Olympia Palace by Minoian Lines between Greece and Italy. Similar pleasant experience. 👍🏻🚢. Thanks for the footage.
Hi Paul! Your videos are amazing, when I saw this one pop up I was excited to see it. For €319 in a "premium" cabin ot seems a pretty good value for 24hrs voyage. I was so impressed with the stuff on board.awesome video as always.
Looked like a really fun experience, I had a similar experience with Brittany Ferries between Portsmouth & Bilbao which was also fun to experience as a one-off. Getting a cabin, even a basic one on such a crossing is a very good investment, though I wouldn't unlikely go for any premium rooms. - Tyler
Great video of an unusual route & ferry. My experience of the catering wasn’t very memorable, but you got a hot lunch, which seemed acceptable. I could only find cold sandwiches!

Viking Glory turnaround time is only about an hour in Stockholm and in Åbo so it is interesting to watch from the ship how - at best - almost 3,000 passengers and hundreds of cars and dozens of trucks are driven off the ship and new ones are taken in - all of that in about an hour. Also in day time in Marienhamn the turnaround time is about 15 minutes and it's there in same time with Viking Grace which operates in the same route but with the opposite timetable. There are "picnic cruisers" which change the ship in the Marienhamn from for example Viking Glory to Viking Grace or from Viking Grace to Viking Glory at the same time so they make like "half minicruise" and will we back at the port of departure in the same evening (they have departured from there in the same morning).

I wonder what is the most deluxe ferry in Europe is?
Can you try taking Silja Line between Stockholm and Helsinki maybe next time? It’s a really nice ferry
Here’s your pun? The room looked ferry nice.
For a ship that entered service in 2008, the decor does look rather 1970s; the wood panelling and the push-button phone with handset, very retro
