Ian comes across as a most unassuming chap - almost unaware of the fact that he's a bit of a design icon. Also, congrats Jonny - this is a perfect start to the rebranding of the channel. I thoroughly enjoyed that natter 😁

Wow! I have to be honest, I had never heard of Ian but watching this I discovered that he is responsible for most of the cars I’ve ever loved. What an incredible man!
So glad you changed the channel name, it was definitely holding back it's potential. Great way to start anew, Ian is a legend. Wish you all the sucess for the future.
@@kraenk12 Johnny eluded to this himself. Some big brands are reluctant to associate themselves with the word "pervert" because of the potential negative connotations around it. I hope we can all agree that we wish continued success for jonny and the channel. Thanks for commenting.
I just want to mention the Rover 75. The more I look at it the better it gets. I honestly think it's one of the best looking cars ever launched. It may not have been the right styling theme for its era and it may have very quickly got the 'old man' image, but it's gorgeous.
Absolutely agree. I had. 2.0 V6 back in the day, lovely thing to drive. Didn’t do helmsmithery, far too undignified, but great for long distances, super civilised cabin, engine sounded great when I ragged it and the amount of people who said they loved my Jag 😂
Great interview, Ian has been my boss a few times, he is one of the best designers in the world........and i have been lucky to work for him, at Jag & TWR.
Excellent, proper people having a proper conversation about cars. This type of content could never happen on TV these days which is one of the main reasons it’s dying. Good socks Jonny.
He's spot on about BMW design these days. It's just too much. BMW are supposed to be understated, clean and sinister. Now they just look like monsters designed on acid.
Exactly, it's over designed compared to their simpler but charming late 80s to early 2000's designs. It's not as bad as the latest Honda Civic though, that thing it's painfully over designed. (mandatory the Z8 is a timeless design masterpiece and I wish more BMWs were like it)
The most talented car designer on the planet today ... Ian Callum's designs are always supremely elegent and just seem to stand the test of time so well, which is really the hallmark of good asthetic design.

Good work Jonny, interesting informative chat , nice to see real friendship in an interview, so different from some of the chats I have seen Ian Callum involved in...
Great interview. Seems like a really passionate, down to earth car guy (although who knew he’d be such a seat snob with your choice of studio furniture!). Has designed some of the most beautiful cars and hopefully will continue to do so.
Great interview, Ian is probably the most spot on designer that I can agree with. I didn’t realise so many of my favourite designs were his. At a very you age seeing the rs200 racing at Lydden hill is a very found memory. I can also relate to his view of the handling of fords, only lotus have given me a similar feeling. My ex’s fiesta was so “just right”. Even a focus estate diesel drove nice. I hope he gets back to mainstream cars one day so his art can been seen in the flesh by millions of people again.
I'm so happy they called him back to work with the Vanquish V12 again, that car has an absolutely timeless beauty, you could release it today and nobody would thought it was a 2001 car by looking at it, I think it will look ahead of it's time forever.
I had the pleasure of a conversation with Ian 8/9 years ago ...when we spoke about his occupation he just said he did some work for Jaguar, and I had no idea who he was until something twigged after our conversation and I looked him up. Such an incredibly nice person and very humble considering his absolute genius.
You've totally hit the spot here, a great interview.Enjoyed your almost confrontational questions, very refreshing. Very glad Mr Porter was included too. Thanks.
The 'new' Jaguar XF Hush advert of 2008 is what really made me sit up and pay attention. Cutting edge design that helped Jaguar stay afloat. There were nice cars about - but nothing like the XF. It took me a few years, but I got a 3.0 Portfolio Sport in Ultimate Black with the volan alloys. I loved that car - but an unfortunate pot hole put and end to my ownership. Have to say though - I've had two X260s since then - one the 3.0D XFS, now currently a 3.0 supercharged XFS. I love it. Thank you Ian, not only does the car look great, but it handles like it was on rails.
I'm only half way through as I write this but I'm loving this interview. You obviously respect each other. The cut aways to all the cars is perfect, though I have to keep pausing the playback to have a proper look. Well done Jonny
Great interview, good to hear that it all started with proper car enthusiasm and personal projects that are still enjoyed to this day. PS. Estate cars, pretty much without exception, always look better than their saloon counterparts. That '57 Chevy should have been a Nomad.... ;-)
What a start Jonny!! An amazing couple of videos with awesome questions and great, proper car nerd content. Also, Sniff’s cameo was really funny. Keep the great work on!!
What a privilege to be able to listen to Ian talk about his career and love for cars and design. Really was a pleasure to watch. Top quality interview Jonny 👍🏻
What an excellent new beginning to the channel Jonny. I could watch this format all day every day. Really looking forward to more!! Best wishes from Ireland.
Great interview Jonny. Loved every minute. It was relaxed, Ian was very candid about his design career and love of cars, you asked some interesting questions and there was great banter between the pair of you, which you can only really do if you’re mates. Brilliant start to the revamped channel. Right, now for part 2.
Great interview, loved Ian's reaction to some of the questions that he clearly was not expecting. Didn't know that it's his brother working for Ford design now, some mega talent in that family.
Do you happen to know anything about his brother? I was at art school in the late 1970's with a Scottish guy studying industrial design and who then went on to the prestigious car design course at the Royal College of Art. Unfortunately I can't remember his name, but do remember he was car mad and the rest of us wondered how he managed to afford a new MGB V8 as a student - just wondered if he could be Ian Callum's brother?
I love how he finds the value even in ordinary cars, after a long life of designing exclusive ones, and his rod is just perfect as it is now, all the right stuff done to it, and nothing more then that...
People with a short attention span tend to be children........ You had to listen to someone talking - no cars whizzing about and making a lot of noise......! Oh dear....
Excellent conversation/interview. I love the present, it's great to see Ian getting surprised at various points so well done on you for making this interesting not just for us but for him as well.
I doubt very much if Ian will read the comments but back in 1994 I did work experience with you, Bart and the gang at the TWR studio in Kidlington. It was a great learning experience. Thanks 🙏🏻
Brilliant sit down interview 🙌 Been an avid follower since the Escort MK 1 “barn find” and love how you find ways to push yourself and the content you’re producing. Nice work mate.
Great start to the new brand, glad to see it hasn't changed you, Mr. Smith! The comments on the Bangle BMWs got me wondering again about something I think I might have imagined, might have not: was Bangle playing with numbers with his BMWs, namely with the styling of the headlights? The side view of the 7-Series left hand headlight is a clear 7. The view of the right headlight on the 5... is a kind of a squished 5. The 3 and the 1 you can kind of see from the front, lying on their sides... Maybe I'm imagining it, but I thought, if anyone was going to recognise what I think I recognised, it would be you (and Ian Callum, of course).
"still a dream car for so many people" thank you for adding that Jonny. I was a little worried about watching this, worried that Ian would criticise those of us who wish to have Astons. I can still dream.
As a proud owner of a 1998 1.7L Ford Puma, i didn't know this man was involved in the desing. I love the car, it looks fantastic even in this days. The only flaw i will mention is the wheel desing (in the models from 1997 to 2000?) with the "boat propeller" type. Fortunately i found a cheap set of the 2000-2002 model, wich have a more conventinal desing.
