  • A quickie video for Mollies Make & Create. Watch Stevie show you the tools and technique for using flexible metal tack strips. This tack strip is used to invisibly secure the fabric to your frame. Because the strip is flexible, it can be used for straight or curved panels. In this demonstration, the back tacking techniques is for the outside back panel, left and right side. Cardboard tack strip is used to secure the top first. Flexible tack strip is also called shark trim, fabloc, ply grip etc.
Tools: Staple gun, scissors, regulator needle, mallet
    Supplies: Ply grip, polyester wadding.

I completed my reupholster of my wife's grandmother's rocking chair. Your video helped me very much. I enclosed the back of the chair with a fabric panel. Your tips made it much easier to understand the process. Curvy tack strip is the ONLY way to go to give a professional look to the project. I totally understand the need to place a staple into each gripper. I missed a few and figured it would be no problem. WRONG: The ones without a hold down staple lifted and caused a problem. I undid a bit of fabric in secured the missed holes with a staple. The trimming of the fabric is essential for the finished look. I especially like the tensioning of the fabric when the grip strip is compressed in place. Thanks for helping to make my first upholstery project something I am proud of.

My staples keep slipping on metal tack strip. Can't get it attached?

You need to try and aim the staples correctly, so it doesn't hit the metal. Aim one side of the staple (pronge) in the hole and the other prong between the gap.
