  • I spend a week with the refreshed and improved 2024 Hyundai Elantra N to see how the tweaks for 2024 affect the driving experience as well as discussing how the Elantra N now stacks up against it's new competitors these days. What are your thoughts on the 2024 Elantra N? Big thanks to Hyundai for providing this vehicle to review!

FYI the wheel hop (vibrations under wheel spin) is something easily solved by swapping out the motor/trans mount bushings. Did it on my '22, only took an hour or so, cost like $150CAD for all 3 and the wheel hop is completely eliminated. Shifting feels better now too as an added bonus! I think EVERYONE who buys this car (even if it's a '24) should do it

Lease brother. It’s not so bad. Plus you just don’t give the car back to who you got it from. That way you can say no to all the little things they try to add on “like scratch protection “ stuff like that. Every time I lease for 2-3 years I get anywhere from $3000-$5000 back from whoever buys my loan off me. You’re paying for half the car so the payments are half of what it would cost. Also I never put money down on a lease. I go in with $0 and leave with a car every time.

Great review as isual Matt! Ive really liked what Hyundai brings to the table on their N cars since they first launced. In this class of cars, for my money, there is only this and VW gli/gti and the accord 2.0t as options worth considering, and only one of them comes with a 100k milage warranty. I require an automatic transmission and wont buy a cvt because they cant really handle much more than stock power levels and are not practically servicable.

Great review as always Matt!👏 I may be a little biased since I have a '23 Elantra N (DCT). Like you said - it's simply a blast to drive, feels very nimble around corners, and the *pop* of the exhaust is amazing.🔥 Plus, for me the fuel efficiency is a major perk I easily get over 30 mpg in eco mode, but N mode calls my name even on the commute to work.😉 It's like two cars in one - it's a great econobox daily with some nice features, and a fun sporty "weekend" car. If anyone is considering one, take it for a spin - you won't be disappointed!🤪

Prices of used Veloster Ns are coming down - an even better performance bargain, if you don't mind the Fisher Price interior.
    Incoming rant:
25:31 - 100% agree. The way the Elantra N is positioned, renders Civic Si's purpose as a value performance car, moot.
In Canada, the N is 4k more than the Si and the WRX is cheaper than the Si by 2 grand, has more power and adds AWD. Elantra N highlights just how uncompetitive the Civic Si is now, price-wise and performance. Even the N-line trim matches the Si in performance; not only that, but even within Honda's lineup, the new hybrid matches the Si in horsepower but adds 40 lb-ft of torque, while getting 50 MPG. Elantra N is the answer unless you must have AWD and can stomach Subaru styling/touch HVAC.

Adaptive cruise requires a power e brake. Look at the type r, no hand brake.

I compete in SCCA National Autocross and in street class this complete with the FK8 Type R, BRZ 86 twins, Golf R and it does well going against cars that cost much more. When I was switching out my Mk8 GTI it was between this new or FK8 type R. For me it came down to interior. Type R looks ridiculous but has a nicer interior and that’s what I have sit and look at while I’m driving.

Good vid Matt. I've got three questions about your choice of a Hyundai over a Subaru for a real world buyer.
    1. Hyundai's reliability is not considered as good as Subaru's, Toyota's, or Honda's. Do you agree?
    2. What about the Hyundai theft issue? The "Tic-Tok" hack from a few years ago comes to mind. There is a new one called the "Game Boy" hack. If I was considering one of these cars, I would be concerned, wouldn't you be?
    3. Hyundai's resale values are nowhere near as good as the Japanese or German competition. This can cost the buyer thousands of dollars. Is this not a big factor in the overall cost of ownership?

Reliability might be iffy for Hyundai in general, but these are built in Korea, not the Alabama plant, and it seems most people aren’t having any serious issues, you also have a 10yr warranty. The new Hyundais with push to start also are not susceptible to the easy theft hacks - sure you can argue that they may still be broken into if a thief doesn’t realize, but it wouldn’t be stolen. Lastly, if you look at used Elantra Ns, Kona Ns, or Veloster Ns, they hold value really well. 2022/23 ENs with

I think most of the cheaper sports cars hold value relatively well the first 3-5 years - SI, Type R, GR86, EN / KN / VN, STI/WRX. It’s when you go luxury that you see that crazy depreciation right off the lot. It’s a nice problem to have as an owner of a new one, not so much if you’re looking to get into one used!

Ok. But the Hyundai / Kia theft issues continue to this day. The manufacturers should recall the affected cars and fix the serious security lapse. If it's suddenly impossible or too expensive to insure your car because of this sort of thing, what must that do to resale value? I would never buy or recommend a Hyundai product because of this.

Anytime we would race or go to the track together he would have to go through the crazy song\dance just to make it perform how it should. Why is hyundai so dumb? The tune should start off at full power and back its way off IF NEEDED using the knock sensors just like every other car brand in the world. Nope, not them. They make you jump though hoops and ask the car for special permission to get full power. And even then still get whooped by a stock 2022 BRZ with no turbo and much less power.😂

Not to be a debbie downer here but, got rid of my 22 Elantra N specifically because of their Octane Learning system. You only get 16 PSI unless you octane learn the car EVERY fill up to get 19 PSI. You have to drive on the highway, maintain a speed over 75 for over 5 minutes or more for the car to 'learn' it has premium. Or do a city drive of deviating gears. It was annoying, I didn't plan to tune the car, so I was stuck with essentially a detuned car. Impossible to octane learn it when you have to slow down on the highway because of traffic, and the city learning never worked.
Anyway, my experience. Turned me off, got rid of it. Other issues such as CV axles, DCT recall issues, seat materials tearing up after 7 months (even though I was super careful). Great car otherwise.

Im not sure why people love these so much. I mean, I get the initial appeal. On paper it all sounds perfect. I have driven 2 of them. Once at a dealership when I considered purchasing one and again later when my coworker owned one. I hated how fake and artificial the driving experience was. The car never felt like it actually did what I wanted. All I could feel was the throttle being limited, boost spikes being tapered down, brakes being activated and diff doing weird things. It felt like it was supposed to be "baby's 1st fun(ish) car". Every single thing you twll ot to do gets processed by 10 computers, then it does aomething similar to yoir request, but in its own way. Outside of all the little gimmiks I have grown to dislike the car. Sure it looks good on paper and makes childish noises, but the actual deiving experience blows. I never understand the crazy praise from joirnalists who drive so many cars. These complaints jumped out at me after seconds of driving.
