I love my TR after 3 weeks. More than the 18 Sti I had new. The clutch and shifter are so much better in the new one. Rides better and just drives better all around.
I had a 2022 loaded 6-speed WRX and loved it, but the car just became average to drive after 30k miles. I recently traded it in on a 2024 TR and I can’t believe how much fun this car is to drive. The recaros are SO comfortable and I like them. Better than the regular buckets. The bolsters are perfect. The steering and suspension is so much better. I love the firmness and crisp turn in compared to the regular WRX. Also, the brakes are awesome. Mine don’t squeak at all. As a practical daily, it has amazing interior space and AWD practicality for all seasons and car seats in the back. I totally disagree with most of the complaints Matt has in this video. I have wireless CarPlay and it’s fast and works well. I do agree with the eyesight complaints. I don’t want that crap in my car and I hate that I can’t fully turn it off. If you set the cruise control and come up on someone it automatically slows you down. I don’t want that feature and I want to shut it off but Subaru doesn’t let you.
I did the sane, traded in 2022 premium wrx for this 2024 tr pretty much the same as what Matt drove in ignition red. I can certainly feel the improvements but more for a better driving. It is a bit stiffer but not by much, the steering is better but still not Honda/Acura good talking about the weight. I had to put install a shift stopper to remove the sloppiness but I still prefer the Honda/Acura mechanical feeling shifters. The power and awd specially here in pacific northwest during rainy days make me appreciate it unlike those fwd even with limited slip diffs just can’t match. The rev limiter I agree with Matt, I wish it has 1-2k more as it feels so short specially in lower gears when you are trying to push it hard. GR Corolla has indeed better awd vectoring and rawness ala STI of old, but the small displacement 3 cyl engine that is pushing out that much power though it is a Toyota engine, not so sure how long that will hold up. Even the interior space (seats and trunk) in gr corolla is much tighter if you have a small family so I went with wrx. I am just enjoying this car as the last days of manual combustion engines are numbered as electrification is fast approaching
Wow. I like critical Matt as opposed to “it’s not that great, but it’s fine.” Or “I don’t really like it but it’s fine.” Being critical and committing to the flaw is more fun to watch.
I just read Motortrend's review of the TR. In all performance metrics, it's just about the same of all other WRX models. This seems kinda pointless for the prices
Subaru is just cashing in on bigger margins without any real R&D. The best value is the base or premium trim and do the upgrades yourself and get a better product in the aftermarket.
It's not that simple. The performance braking tests they do are one time stops. The brakes on the TR, which are bigger and more robust, don't necessarily stop better (As stopping is tire limited); they last longer after repeated stops and thermals. The suspension is sharper, which doesn't necessarily translate to lap times as it does it in making the car more predictable in hard driving. The seats are better, but that doesn't translate into lap times. The car has better steering feel. But that doesn't... Anyway, you get the point.
@@caryg4638100% agree! You don’t drive stats, you drive engagement. The new TR is a more fun car to drive in everyday, and as a daily driven sport sedan it really does hit the sweet spot and I love mine!
Good equipment but the price! Got 2023 Premium MT in March for $31K. Added EBC pads, DOT4 fluid, intake w/ custom tune (+75 whp and 130 ft-lb), catback, STI trans/ motor/ diff mounts, 20mm wheel spacers, tinted windows and speaker upgrades and it’s really great. And I’m getting 26 mph in mixed but mostly highway driving.

The Premium trim around $35k seems like the sweet spot for these. Once you’re in the $40k range, there are better options out there for most people. Great video, Matt!
Fellow (former) NASIOC member here! I appreciate the honesty with this TR. So many reviewers hear Brembo brakes and Recaro seats and they fawn over them without actually testing them. Just because it says Recaro, doesn't mean it's going to be a fantastic seat for all conditions and all body types. The VB generation seems like Subaru is phoning it in, and now this TR edition seems like it is a phoned in trim level. Not impressed.
There are plenty on dealer lots right now. I thought about grabbing a premium trim for $3k off sticker 1.9% apr. It’s not a bad deal if you don’t expect a truly special driving experience and just want something kinda fun, manual and AWD. But I understand what you mean.
Great video. I had a 2001 WRX and absolutely loved the hell out of it for every second, and it didn't have any of these "advancements" you talk about here, most of which seem to make the car worse or at least no better. And the acceleration time is the same as my '01, and for way more money even adjusting for inflation. Thats nutso. Cant figure out who this car is for, considering the competition.
I think Subaru has been phoning it in for a long time. My opinion is that they don't seem to care about about enthusiasts. They just wanna sell Crosstrecks. Even manufacturers that are struggling make minor improvements as needed. Matts right about the bang for buck aspect with the GR.
Peak Subaru was 15+ years ago. They need to get their act together. I owned 5 Subarus in a row from the early 90s (including a 1995 Legacy wagon that went to 320,000 miles and would have easily gone longer) until a highly tuned and modded 2008 Legacy GT. Now I'm driving a newer Nissan truck there's no way I'm going back to a sedan.

I've always told my clients (8 years selling the brand) the WRX is a better daily driver than the STI. Unless you plan on doing track days or autocrossing, the performance gains of the STI are simply wasted potential. (and a higher cost of ownership) Not to mention those of us in AZ/CA can't get 93 octane, which the STI requires to make its full hp. Maybe it's the 52-year-old in me that still says a WRX Premium or Limited is really all the car most people will ever need on the street. Subaru still offers the armrest extension- part number J2010VC000
This thing, while starting to grow on me, hasn’t grown on me enough to replace my ‘13 hatch. Instead of considering an “upgrade,” I think l finally pull the trigger and get sways, end links, and LCAs for my hatchie and call it a day.
Ha! the orange lane departure light on the dash. We have that on our Outback. At least it stays off permanently instead of needing to turn it off every time you start the car. However, the only way we found to fix it was put a small piece of black paper tape over the light so you cant see it when driving. Got use to it, but annoying nonetheless.

All of the sti Brembos would squeal from time to time, it was the pass they came with factory. Change out the pads to a less aggressive pad and no more squeak. Performance car problems lol.
I value your thoughts on this car more than most. It sounds like a good car but not competitive for the price unless you go to the base trim. Thats what I did with my 22 BRZ and was out the door for $29k with no iSight nannies. Darn the Corolla keep orbiting in my head!
How is it not competitive? Name one other car that offers 4 doors, a six speed manual, AWD, cheap insurance, good fuel mileage, good reliability, amazing residual value, spacious interior for FOUR full size real humans, a spacious trunk and the ability to haggle to get one below MSRP AND an amazing aftermarket presence and support. No other cars for sale offer all of that. Not the Golf R, not the Elantra N, not the M3, not the CT4VBW, not the Civic Type R, and not the Corolla GR. Slam the WRX all you want, but it is the best all around car you can buy right now! It is a dying breed and we should be thankful it exists!
@@aroundomaha I agree with you. Anything past the premium trim doesnt make sense for a WRX imo. The msrp for the TR is literally $13,000 more than I paid OTD for my 23' base. I could get a BBK kit and recaro sporters and still have leftover money
If this had 6 speed STI transmission in it with the diffs (like old Legacy GT Spec-Bs, with standard WRX engine) at this price it might be both track ready AND tuner ready in the fact that you have much more ceiling for power without busting split case WRX transmission on the track or street for that matter.
It's great that they ditched the dunlops for the TR. Those Dunlops are absolute garbage, and I'll never understand why they're the only option for tires. They delivered my wife's WRX to Denver Colorado in the middle of winter with those trash summer tires and wanted to upcharge us $1200 to put all seasons or snow tires on. Needless to say we purchased a set of aftermarket wheels and good tires and brought them with us to pick up the car.
Shopping around and test drove a base spec WRX and loved it. Went to give the TR a go and just sitting in those seats… nope! Not for a daily driver, not for me at least. Will probably go for a Sport model just for the nav and wireless options. Pisses me off that in 2024, neither is standard on a base model. Wtf?
No idea about the us but in Australia GR Corolla and golf R is no where near the price range of a wrx lol …. WRX is around 50-60k aud depending on trim and GR Corolla literally cost 70k aud and golf R is around 76-78k aud … it’s not even close in terms of pricing … I m baffled how these cars are priced so similar over in the US 😂
I love my 23 Limited, but I can not get comfortable in the seats. Anything over 30 minutes bothers my back, which is why I didn't notice this on 3 different Limited test drives. I'm even considering selling it because of this. Definitely bummed because the rest of the car is really good. Lots of fun in the twisties!
I had a similar weird problem with a VW seat. Turns out I had a hip problem developing, that took a while to figure out. Combination of SI joint and bursitis. The limited seat is the most adjustable, but I will say for some anatomies some seats do not work. Visit a physical therapist before you sell your car. I loved my VW diesel after my hip was better…at least until they had to buy it back!😮
I think its too expensive for usa People .. but in Canada at 43 k canadian its very cheap for what we have for the price. And we dont have premium here its call sport and its so rare you cant barely have one.
@@nawmean I've always been a Subaru guy, owning several WRXs over the years: a 2003 bug-eye, a 2006 hawk-eye, a 2008 STI, a 2020 WRX, a 2021 WRX, and then back to a VA STI. The 2021 WRX was the only one that didn’t feel like a WRX. The steering was floaty, making the car feel less sporty and soulless. The shifter was sloppy, with a mushy feel when shifting gears. The ride quality was poor, almost as if it had low-quality aftermarket lowering springs despite the stock wheel gap being huge. The interior quality was lacking, with annoyances like non-extending sun visors. The Harman Kardon speakers were disappointing, and the brakes were terrible. As for the looks, I tried to improve them by lowering the car on Work wheels and color-matching the plastic cladding, which helped a bit. However, the rear end was still hideous. Adding some decent aero parts didn’t help much either. The unremarkable driving experience probably made me dislike the exterior even more. The only thing I liked about the VB was the power band. It was smooth and consistent, but that was about it. While previous WRXs had their flaws, they all felt like fun sports cars. The newer VB, on the other hand, felt like an average four-door sedan.
@@nawmeanIm a current VB owner and have owned 2 VA STI's in the past. I love my VB alot for being an affordable and practical sporty daily. It does have its flaws but the things that bother me can be addressed with modifications. I would suggest test driving one yourself and see how YOU feel about it
Not gonna lie brother, it's sad to hear you channel your old TH-cam name in order to trash this car, but that is not your fault, it is Subaru's. They are circling the drain like Mitsubishi was before they killed their best cars. I am not optimistic for the future of the WRX. It's a solid vehicle, just not a competitive option.
For those not paying attention, let me tell you how this works. Subaru is making all these useless "special edition" WRXs and charging way more than they are worth for having such few changes. The reason is that the new STI IS COMING. They intend to charge around $50k for it which is absolutely too much. But they try to make it look like its not so bad by having these foolish trims sell for absurd prices in the meantime.

Slam the WRX all you want, but it is the best all around car you can buy right now! It is a dying breed and we should be thankful it exists!
@@SuzukiKid400 in the base model it is a good value. The trims above take it beyond what I would pay for it.
Yea, base model is a nice proposition
@@aroundomaha I agree with you. Anything past the premium trim doesnt make sense for a WRX imo. The msrp for the TR is literally $13,000 more than I paid OTD for my 23' base. I could get a BBK kit and recaro sporters and still have leftover money
@@BDA0531 I have a BRZ but the WRX is on my bucket list of cars. Wish they’d make a wagon/hatch version
Yeah! We got the subbbaruughdbbrrexxxfannn back here!!!
If this had 6 speed STI transmission in it with the diffs (like old Legacy GT Spec-Bs, with standard WRX engine) at this price it might be both track ready AND tuner ready in the fact that you have much more ceiling for power without busting split case WRX transmission on the track or street for that matter.
I was behind a new WRX the other day. They have the ugliest rear end of any WRX ever made. Gross
Needless to say we purchased a set of aftermarket wheels and good tires and brought them with us to pick up the car.
serbaderxfan, here
4:50there is arm rest extension option, you will see it in “build your car”
I think the new TR seems like a nice car but the MSRP on these new WRX's is way too high. I think the low 30's like mentioned should be it.
Wow Matt you totally trash this car... but I agree with everything you said
Haha gotta be honest!
@@MattMaranMotoringWe appreciate that.
Nobody needs Brembos and Recaro seats to drive to Starbucks 😂😂😂
Shopping around and test drove a base spec WRX and loved it. Went to give the TR a go and just sitting in those seats… nope! Not for a daily driver, not for me at least. Will probably go for a Sport model just for the nav and wireless options. Pisses me off that in 2024, neither is standard on a base model. Wtf?
No idea about the us but in Australia GR Corolla and golf R is no where near the price range of a wrx lol …. WRX is around 50-60k aud depending on trim and GR Corolla literally cost 70k aud and golf R is around 76-78k aud … it’s not even close in terms of pricing … I m baffled how these cars are priced so similar over in the US 😂
The outside looks like a old focus. Not very sporty. I think a 2 door version would help alot
I loved my VW diesel after my hip was better…at least until they had to buy it back!😮
They made a WRX for WRX people 😂
Instant click. This is the type of review I can relate to and enjoy
I love my VB as well but cmon bro the brakes are horrible 😂 it's ok you're not alone.
At this point there is no reason outside of needing awd to get a wrx over a N
He said the thing!
SUBARUWRXFAN HERE!
great video. you just saved me a bunch of money
I still wonder what your NASIOC screen name was lol
I think its too expensive for usa People .. but in Canada at 43 k canadian its very cheap for what we have for the price. And we dont have premium here its call sport and its so rare you cant barely have one.
As a VB WRX owner no it is not worth it.
Same here. Owned it for 6 months and it got the boot.
@@AaronRobinProductions care to share your experience and why you got rid of the VB? I've been considering picking up a new 2023 premium
I would suggest test driving one yourself and see how YOU feel about it
Not very fair to compare sticker price. WRX can be had $3000 or more below sticker with low interest rates. Competition he's using cannot.
The Elantra N might be nice but doing a front wheel burnout every time you take off quickly with the wheels turned gets old lol
Meanwhile, my car sits over 4000 on RPM at the top gear (5th) on the highway 😅
Those Recaro seats are rock hard, you might as well be sitting on a piece of wood.
450k lets get Matt to 500k subscribers !!
I love my ye’old faithful wrx
Sheesh i havent heard that in some time 🤧
For those not paying attention, let me tell you how this works.
Get the Elantra N,, more focused car.. wrx seems to be a jack of all trades but average at all metrics
Love the classic intro, i think a daily i would stick the base model with a manual!
I'm sure its a good car, but the fugly rear end is a big no for me. It just never grew on me.
SubaruWRX Fan is back!
Can you hear the turbo on this generation Matt
No lol
No
@@pharmztko that really blows
Yeah unfortunately not. Gotta go for a GR Corolla if you wanna hear turbo sounds.
No it honestly doesn’t feel like a wrx. Tried a VB for 6 months and sold it because it felt soulless. I ended up going back to a VA STI.
It was so great to hear "Subaruwrxfan!" in your intro! Thanks for this fun and informative video! 😃👍
Glad you liked it!
