Street Food in 2020 | Eating During A Pandemic + What's Happening To Street Food In Vietnam!?

- What is it like to eat during a Pandemic? Is this what street food will be like for all of 2020? Maybe so, but today I wanted to show you how Vietnam is handling the situation. Especially since Vietnam had such a high success rate the first time, I want to bring you along with me first hand as I eat during these times.
Started off with a must go to Bun Thit Nuong. This place is famous with tourist and locals and for good reason. Stuffing their fried spring rolls with not just pork, mushroom and the typical ingredients but also adding crab to really enhance the flavor. Everything else is on point and this place is a really good Bun Thit Nuong that you want to try when in Saigon.
Next up Phuc Map and I went to try some central dishes. A first for both of us as we tried the Banh Beo Nong, a warm version of banh beo topped with an assortment of goodies. Typical central flavors of the sea and light on the palate. We also crushed a delicious bowl of Banh Canh He and washed it all down with a famous drink to beat the heat and give me my second wave of energy.
Last Phuc Map and I went for one of our favorite meals, Com Tam. Now this lady we went to is super special. She’s not going to blow you away with massive amounts of meat, but she does all the little things correct. Super fine rice, rich nuoc mam, and a cha like you have never had before. The com tam I crave when I need a truly delicious broken rice meal.
Phuc map left us, but you know we still had to go get a sweet treat. For me, I had to take you to my favorite spot for the banh bo stuffed in the banh tieu. This childhood favorite of Saigon locals is becoming harder to find, but luckily this auntie and uncle team are keeping it alive and doing one of the best in all of Saigon.

Hey Max, I have been binge watching your videos. It has been amazing to see the different cuisines that Vietnamese people eat in their own country through the lens of an American. I am an American woman and my 2 favorite cuisines are Thai and Vietnamese.. where I live/have lived there really isn't a huge variety of Vietnamese dishes to try.. nor are they of the best quality. So, it's such an amazing treat to see all of the fresh noodle dishes, vegetables, sauces, sweet drinks and desserts etc. that they have available. I absolutely adore Che and would love to try more of it, you are so lucky! I also love banh mis, pho, the vermicelli bowls, the pickled veggies, tropical fruits.. and pandan I have to say is one of the best flavors I've ever had! I am vegan though so I'm not sure how difficult that would be in Vietnam.

Bánh Tiêu and Bánh Bò is actually for snack or dessert since they’re lightly sweet and originally from Cantonese street snacks when those Chinese immigrated and brought them to Vietnam for quite a long time and they now become as Vietnamese foods.
Also, there’s Giò Cháo Quẩy, some Northern regions called it shortly “Quẩy” and nowadays in Hà Nội, people eat it with Phở Bò - Beef Noodle Soup. But in Southern regions, especially in Saigon, we eat it with Hủ Tíu Cá Gà - Fish & Chicken Rice Noodle Soup, or Cháo Lòng - Intestine Rice Porridge.. Some other people, especially Chinese Vietnamese, eat it while drinking Pạc Sỉu - Hot Coffee with Condensed Milk.
Almost 30 years that I've been living in the Great USA, have tried all great foods but one thing that stands out, makes me drooling every time I think about it. It is "Cơm hến" from Hue. Luckily I am from New England (East Coast) so most of all ingredients to make this dish is available. I think you both should try it (authentic place of course)
Max, you are much luckier than me, I am Vietnamese but I haven't had the chance to eat as many delicious dishes in Vietnam as you do. Anytime I go back there, I got sick and couldn't eat and I didn't know where could I find the good food to eat. You are on the right track, if you want to film Viet Nam food, you have to film daily meals, lunch, dinner ...You will have a thousand dishes and not get into the same rut as other youtubers. They just hang around in phở bún bò Huế, bánh xèo ... very few people film chè, sweet desert .... This is also Vietnamese specialty of cuisine.
Max, you eating all my favorite childhood foods ;-) Gotta give it up to you and Phuc Map, you guys sure enjoy the moments. The local usually loves it when visitor do "nhập gia tùy tục", which kinda mean "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"

My family makes this and what really makes it is using fatty pork like pork belly and the oiled green onion. All that greasy richness against the fresh crunchy herbs and noodles topped with crispy shallots is the best. We eat it with nuoc Cham but we also make a second peanut and patè based sauce.

Bun thit nuong should always come with extra fried spring rolls. :) I never knew about the mashed mung beans in banh beo until I saw Julia Linder and her hubby eat it this week (she became a believer after comparing it with and without). Yeah you can find the fried dough everywhere! But the steamed rice cake is what really makes the dish unique!
