Yes you can play offline, I have the 2 models fat and slim physicals. You only need the net connection to install the disc drive and then you can play offline. Personally I think Sony is doing this to see how much people are interested in the physical media (which I will always be).
Yes superb, thanks for clarifying this, i did think there is no way (at least for now) Sony will advocate for constant online checks. Brilliant, thanks for confirming - mind at ease now.
Your miss understanding - to pair the Blu-ray Disc drive you need the internet to connect it to the ps5/pro, once it is paired you no longer need to connect to the internet to play physical games. If you try playing a disc based game without pairing the disc drive it won’t connect to the ps5/pro
I completely agree - I can''t wait for the physical disc to come out in the UK, i really hope it comes out before the PS5 Pro comes out, i want this to be my first game on the Pro.
God i hope this isn't true, the idea of my console not working or not being compatible becuase someone "switched off" something at their end doesnt sit right with me. Love the content mate keep it coming
Permissions are stored locally and on the Sony server. Once paired the disc drive is enabled to work offline. The same with games. The permission certificates are stored locally in your library and on the Sony server. If your console is set as your 'primary console' the certificates are valid offline.
Looks like MGS is going to land in 2025, we haven’t heard anything about the game in a while considering was supposed to be a 2024 release. I’m getting the physical copy of black myth Wukong
Rockstar being Rockstar i think they will turn up with a new ad - the key thing is if it will be attached to a console or not during the ad - like "coming to PS5 in 2025" or something - but Rockstar/take2 have an investor call in November - so hopefully we get another update soon.
MGS was supposedly pushed back to get Pro Enhancement and they want the Pro icon on the physical disc for advertising so they have to finish that before release but I wish it was ready to go by now. 😅
I really hope it is this year, i was so hyped for that game but haven't heard anything from anyone about the game, but you are right - imagine PlayStation/Konami announcing that the game is launching Nov 7th - launch day - AMAZING!
I’m disappointed we haven’t had any further updates on Snake Eater, maybe we will get a new trailer at the game awards and then a release date for Jan 2025? That would work for me. I watched the DF video and there are questions about the online connection and whether it’s always required, I think we will find out when the pro comes out.
Yeah i am thinking something similar about picking up the physical version of Alan Wake 2, and then when the Pro comes out i just need to plan what i'm playing and in which order lol
Can you imagine if Metal Gear Solid has been pushed into 2025? And we get Wolverine for 2025? GTA, Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, and these two that’s brilliant what a year.
Yeah a lot of people got the game online when it came out, i guess it was too good to wait for but i am glad i waited, i just hope the game comes out on disc before the PS5 Pro does, i really badly want to play this.
Have you got your disc drive yet? They're out of stock everywhere. I keep checking daily. I don't want to buy one off ebay so i keep holding out in hopes up to Pro launch but i don't want to not have 1 in time for release day. Disappointed that PlayStation Direct wouldn't have an option to atleast pre-order 1 with your pre-order of the Pro.
It’s a shame you can’t buy one with the pro but I ordered my disc drive back in September when the pro was confirmed, as the drives were selling out I picked one up then and just kept it to one side until the pro comes out. Just to add, you should be able to order one I would imagine in a couple of weeks time as they are restocked, just keep checking different sites. Which country are you ordering in?
@BGUKKY I should've bought one myself earlier. I'm UK so checking daily in Argos, Curry's, Smyths. Still a good couple of weeks so I've got high hopes. 👍🏼
Yeah keep checking those sites, funny enough i ordered mine from Very in the UK, i got it around 4 days after ordering, it was the only place left that had any. Stock levels keep going up and down, its just best to do a quick check early morning and a quick check later in the day.
Yes - the PS5 slim detachable disc drive (the PS5 blue-ray detachable disc drive) is compatible with the PS5 Pro - its the same disc drive. My disc drive arrived last month before they sold out, some places still have them available.
Yep that is true for all digital purchase - which is why i stay away from digital games where i can/if i can, most of the games i own are physical and always will be unless the devs make it digital only.
I've always had physical games, occasionally i may pick up something from the PlayStation store when the prices are really cheap, but its rare, knowing that so long as i have the hardware i can play my games anytime is a great feeling.
Side question, is Alan Wake a fun game? I never played it and I see so many people sing its praise for one reason or another. But, are the games “fun” or is just one of those games where the narrative overshadows the flaws? I’m probably going to play both of the games after the Pro comes out, but I just want to know what I should be expecting in terms of overall enjoyment.
It's a great question, fun is always subjective, what is fun to one person may not be fun to others. Some people find soulslike games fun while others find them frustrating, just depends on the kind of games you like. Alan Wake is a good horror survival game, so if you like games like Silent HIll, Dead Space, Calisto Protocol, its that kind of vibe, great story, narrative driven style of game.
Yeah you need to have internet to pair it to the PS5 Pro the first time you connect the disc drive, after that you shouldn't need it again. Once the disc drive is paired to the PS5 Pro, you will receive a digital certification/licence which confirms that the disc drive belongs to and is connected to your PS5 Pro, the certificate/licence is stored locally on your console, so you wont need the internet connection again.
Oh no, which country you in? How you replying to these messages on TH-cam without internet? Can you not tether the internet from your mobile to the PS5 Pro?
@@BGUKKY yes use data on my pay as you go phone I've never tried tethering anything to my phone but if that would work then maybe I can get a ps5 pro after all. I'm in the UK.
I dont get your point buddy, i would like to learn more about how often the internet connection is required for the pro & the disc drive pairing, hopefully its only the once on initial set up, and not a constant online requirement.
This 'always online' nonsense is born out of ignorance and fear mongering. You are only allowed to connect the external disc drive to one console at a time to prevent piracy issues. When you first connect a disc drive to a console, the console has no record of it, so it contacts the Sony server database to see if the drive is registered to a different console. It then changes the server data to pair the drive with the console. The disc drive is now enabled locally and allowed to work. If you connect the drive to a different console. The pairing won't match so it has to connect to the Sony server to check that it's paired to a different console. The new pairing is stored on the server and stored locally, so the local drive it enabled. Once the drive is enabled you do not need to check in with the server because it is recorded locally as well as on the server, so you can play offline. Digital games are similar. A certificate for each game is stored on the server to prove you have the permission to play it. Permission certificates are also stored locally in your library, and if you have set the console to your 'primary console,' you can play all your games offline because you have the certificates locally. PlayStation gamers may be familiar with the option to 'repair permissions' if data gets corrupted and you can't play a game. This process contacts the Sony server and downloads a fresh copy of your certificate permissions list and overwrites the corrupt file in your library, so you can play all your games again. But this is a rare error.
So in other words, if the server check ins get shut down for whatever reason in the future by Sony then you automatically have a paper weight, even if the hardware still works. If they can take games down permanently then they can shut down support in a few years for these drives if they wanted to.
Thank you so much buddy, what a fantastic comment and response - i did think that it wouldn't be an issue but so many people commenting saying its always online - which doesnt really fit in with the PlayStation ethos over the past 20 years or so. Thanks for clearing this up.
If you have already connected/paired your console to the disc drive then your PlayStation will have the certification/permissions stored locally, so it shouldn't be an issue using the disc drive for blu rays/games if services were shut down in the future. What you wouldn't be able to do is take your bluray and use it on another PlayStation if the servers were shut down.
but if you want to play on the PS5 pro now you will have to buy a disc drive if you didn't originally want one if you want to play physical and if you've already got digital, you're paying twice plus the price of the drive LOL
If your playing digital why would you buy the drive? Don't make sense. If you buy the pro and want to play physical games, buy the disc drive. If you want to just play digital you dont need the disc drive.
@@BGUKKY one other thing I really want to know is will the Playstation portal work better with the PS5 pro on remote play now the PS5 has more power and supports the new Wi-Fi technology
Great question - we'll find out in 2 weeks give or take. I held off from getting the portal becuase its not "fully remote" you still have to be connected to the PS5, however, i do really want one, i can see myself in many scenarios where i can be playing on the portal, especially sometimes when your sitting up in bed or the mrs is watching tv where you can just stick on the portal for a short period of time to pass the time by.

This isn't accurate. You don't need internet to download your disc with single player games.
Your miss understanding - to pair the Blu-ray Disc drive you need the internet to connect it to the ps5/pro, once it is paired you no longer need to connect to the internet to play physical games. If you try playing a disc based game without pairing the disc drive it won’t connect to the ps5/pro
Personally I can't ever play without internet, because it wants to verify my license.
Disk and digital games.
Ive only really had that on digital games every now and again
Amazing that Black Myth: Wukong is coming out on disc. It's great for collectors and the millions of PS gamers who buy physical media.
