    I read on a forum where a Jeep engineer got on to address the 6000 lbs. towing limit. The diesel can tow more weight as a powerhouse. The problem came in cooling the engine. A diesel runs hotter. Jeep has a smaller engine compartment than most trucks with the wheels outside the engine compartment. They couldn't get enough air into the engine compartment to cool the engine so limiting towing weight was the needed. The diesel's grill will have wider slots to get greater airflow. They tried an air scoop under the bumper, but it added little airflow and they didn't want to limit off road capabilities and that added one more piece that would true rock crawlers would break off so that was not used. Bottom line, the weight limitation all boiled down to keeping the diesel engine cool.

    So let’s recap, fiat diesel motor so worse reliability .. worse payload, worse towing, more expensive to buy, more expensive to maintain, more expensive fuel. You gotta be a true sucker to buy this thing or just have money to burn and you wanna lift it and put 40s on and still have torque to the move the damn thing!

      idk, in europe we get a 2.2 diesel in the wrangle which sells well and is reliable too. Light pickup trucks here tend to use a 2.0 or 2.5 diesel anyways and they get tow ratings of up to 8000lbs and a payload of about 2200 lbs... the best example i know is the isuzu Dmax

    There is word on the street that the 3.6 gas is going to be replaced with an all new inline 6 cylinder. They need to just bring back the 4.0 with a modern power twist and get some big torque along with the reliability of the old 4.0 and get back to the core of what it meant to have a jeep!

      I like that engine excepr that the oil pump is powered by a rubber belt thats in the back of the engine. An internal rubber belt subjected to numerous heat cycles and living in oil? They claim it lasts 100k, but to replace it you have to pull the transmission and transfer case! To me thats as bad as some engines with internal water pumps. they leak, your engine dies.

      Off Road Jeep take this into consideration. The Colorado’s rangers frontiers and Tacoma only sell in the 2% range with anything less then 4 doors, that’s 2 doors and extended cabs. There is no ACTUAL demand for a 2 door. Yes a handful of angry keyboarders will say they want one. But no one is trying to give Jeep $30k+ and make a vehicle with less towing, no room for more then 2 passengers, and a weaker frame

      When a truck is produced it gets rated at the max in can safely pull, if you make the truck itself heavier then the payload has to come down so that the overall max number is the same. The new Diesel engine can handle pulling way more than the gas engine but the rig would be unsafe to operate. Anyone who pulls and trailers very much knows you don’t buy a rig that will be maxed out always. If you need to pull 6-7000 lbs consistently you’ll want a half ton truck. If you pull often you’ll want the diesel variant because it will pull easier and last longer.

      69 Bronco guy! Except that new diesels are not reliable, require more maintenance and the maintenance is more expensive. Price of fuel is also more expensive and has lesser availability than traditional gasoline. All that for worse payload and lower towing figures. You can pay more for lesser product if you like, but I don’t see any legitimate reason to pick the diesel

    • @capt.stubing5604
      @capt.stubing5604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh none of the benefits, what about a much longer range than the gas version and super low end torque. Not sure its worth the extra cost but for overlanding range and low end torque are huge benefits. I have the Pentestar and love but I’d love it more with those benefits.

    The reduced tow rating of the ecodiesel is because of airflow concerns of keeping the engine cool enough under load. No one should be regularly hauling more than 5000 lbs in vehicles this size anyway, so top tow ratings are really meaningless. Payload is a more important factor and should be of greater concern for buyers.
    A loaded Rubicon Gladiator already goes $60K+ so I'm guessing the ecodiesel option will push this to $70,000.

    Love diesel POWEEEER! However the emissions control systems, mainly the EGR system is a killer! Now we have two of these sandwiched on top of this 3rd GEN ecodiesel. Not good! I had a 16' ram 1500 ecodiesel myself. Great power plant, poor emissions systems. The recall flash also didnt help. I eventually used the positive equity I had on the truck, got myself a nice used ford f350 4x4 7.3 !!!

I want to know what phisical changes were made to the design. Only that will reveal if the design changes are real or just superficial. I would truly appreciate a look at the changes that were made.

    The Brakes and Chassis/Suspension are the primary limitations of any vehicle with the power plant being the third factor the determines the ultimate tow limit of any vehicle. Also, I drove an Avis Rental version of the Gas Gladiator out of Newark NJ back in March.. The only thing I liked was its slow - off pavement capability. Other than that, there are way better vehicles out there from GM, Nissan, Toyota and Ford for everyday use and comfort.

    Which Gladiator would be better towing a 4000 lbs camping trailer over a steep grade mountain? Looking forward to the test, thinking diesel will win.
    Currently towing 2500 lbs with a 2016 JKU or the 2018 Grand Cherokee overland depending on the trip. The Cherokee does better. JKU will heat up on a climb, the Cherokee is more stable in temperature.

  • @phprofYT
    @phprofYT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For those that just can't understand the "only 6k tow capacity" of a diesel gladiator, consider also the cooling issue. Diesel's generate a lot more heat than the v6 3.6L penastar. The inter-cooler alone pumps out enough heat to boil your biscuits when the turbo is fully spooled up. The first round of RAM's (2014-2019) with the EcoDiesel had significant limitations pulling with the diesel given the heat issue. The new EcoDiesel has an improved cooling setup so they appear to be better.
    Second, if you are pulling 6k behind a mid-size truck, please let me know where you are at. I'd like to avoid those roads. 6k is a lot of weight for a truck with this wheel base in length and width. 6k is plenty for a 1/2 ton truck so these 3/8 ton penny poppers just need to be put in perspective.

  • @seagullsbtn

    Lower payload and towing probably caused by higher weight of the diesel over the Pentastar

      Compare payload ratings of heavy duty ram trucks. The 6.4 Hemi trucks have ~800 pounds more payload at same maximum gross weight than the 6.7 cummins equipped ones. 6.4 Hemi weights 400 pounds and the cummins 1050 plus the gearbox is also heavier.

    The lower towing weight is confusing. Most German cars with diesels can tow more than their petrol/gas models. The GLS400d and GLE400d has Mercedes inline 3 litre 6 cylinder turbo diesel with 335hp and 520 foot pounds of torque. They can tow 7700 pounds. Very strange this thing from Jeep.
    On another note, we don't get Ram in my country and I hate trucks but man I would take a RAM1500 with a diesel anyday. What a nice truck.
