As a 51 year old going through the menopause I've recently started to try out longevity primers, because it's becoming so difficult to keep any foundation looking good when your face spontaneously breaks out in a sweat several times a day! So far I've sampled Laura Mercier Radiance and This Works In Transit Camera Closeup. Mainly because they both double up as moisturisers, and I hate layering lots of different products on my face- so anything that does more than one job is a bonus. Laura Mercier was definitely a 'don't waste your money' one- I seemed to have to use more foundation to get the same coverage as usual, and makeup actually didnt' last as long as without primer. Not for me, I'm afraid. The This Works was much better- foundation went on smoother, looked noticeably better and lasted longer. Though i kind of felt I was aware of it on my face at times, almost like a slightly moist/ clammy feeling (when I wasn't actually sweating!)...very odd. Great video as usual by the way, and beautiful makeup!
Great video! I'll be honest, I have tried primers (expensive ones and cheap ones) and I didn't see any difference when I used them - so, I don't wear primers. I just prep my skin by washing my face and using a moisturizer - that's it. Like you said in the beginning of the video, I feel primers are just another product to spend money on.
Being over 60 I find primers do help for applying foundation afterwards. Personally I prefer L'Oréal and Revlon, although some pharmacy 'flash primer' ampoules are not bad although the latter can sometimes leave your skin over taut at least in my age group. Thanks for trying out such a large variety.
Thanks so much. I am a new subscriber so it is the third video I am watching tonight from you. I am so impressed with your information and how you explain about products. So surprise that you just have 30 k subscribers! I am a huge fan. Bani, from Toronto Canada.
A woman who likes to saves money. Thank the lord. I thought i was the only tightarse left. There are great drugstore products out there. Thats all i use . The fit me range the age rewind. There are so many. Your so right . You dont need to spend a fortune to look good. 😘🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒
I like to use primers that blurs out my pores and control my oily t-zone. Otherwise the rest of my face I leave bare. I only noticed after turning 40 (I’m 43 now) that my pores are noticeable and the pore minimisers do help blur them out and the foundation doesn’t exacerbate their appearance. I learnt quite a lot from your video with what primers go with certain foundations as I was NOT aware of that! Thank you for the informative video as I learnt something today.
I found the Laura Mercier Radiant primer turned my skin orange. I use Hourglass Veil Mineral to help with oil & it works 4 me & also Tarte Timeless Smoothing primer worked really well into my: pores, deep set forehead lines, crow's feet & a tad under my eyes. Looks great in photos, doesn't feel heavy at all & really helps everything last.
Are you saying that the Tarte smoothing Primer you speak of kind of smoothes over lines so that foundation “floats” on top? That’s what I’m looking for! What kind of foundations can I use with it? Water-based? Silicone-based? Oil-based? THANK YOU!
I recently bought that same nars foundation and I wore it yesterday and before I was home from church it was already off of my nose and starting to come off of my chin. I’m trying to remember what all primers and moisturizers I put on under it bc I’m feeling very sure it wasn’t the foundation itself and I have dry skin so I know it wasn’t my own natural oils moving it around. I can’t wait to wear this again before work here in a few days or I go to vanity to play in some of my new stuff lol. I honestly had never heard anyone say to use silicone w silicone and water w water. Makes sense and I’ll have to look at the ingredients on the foundations I use and check my primers too. Thanks so much from what I’ve learned from this video and I haven’t even finish it all yet!
I only use a primer in the hot summer months to control my oily skin. I rarely use it in the winter. That being said I have discovered that primer only works well for me when I use certain foundation. I love your honesty. ♡
Working my way back through your vids this was an interesting one. Together with your Estée Lauder DWL review I’ve decided I’m not bothering with a primer. That’s some money I’ve saved towards my purchase of some Legendary Lashes mascara 😂😂👍
Ello Hun😊 Interesting. ...🤔🤔🤔 The side with the primer was darker from the beginning , so u definitely put more foundation. ..not only that ...you mentioned that feels heavier That gave me indication that it would be a waste of time so I wasn't really surprised that you got to the same conclusion 🤗 Am far away from being makeup expert but I've learned one thing: You shouldn't feel that you are wearing foundation 🤗🤗🤗
Lancôme La Base Pro has been my favourite for ages. Nothing works better for me. And I tried!!!! It erases pores, it is super expensive but really lasts. A tiny bit goes a long way! You’re so right about samples, I’ve never been denied samples in stores. I actually had a positive experience with Sisley... in store it was great, but after a few uses of samples I had a break out and that saved me from a RIDICULOUS waste of money. BTW Love your videos xx
FCJ Miller Thank you. So glad you’ve found something that works for you. I’m a big fan of oil primers or illuminating primers but I’ve never found a pore minimising primer that works. X x x
So I’m obviously way late to the party, BUT - as someone who is new to the primer scheme, here are my thoughts. Benefit Porefessional is a great primer but I only use it really as a pore filler vs. a primer. I also have redness in my skin, so I use a green tinted color corrector “primer” as well, but more for the color correction vs. priming, Case in point: I find since I do take good care of my skin and use a hyaluronic acid moisturizing serum under my makeup (the “tackiness” helps my foundation stay put) I’m not totally sold on primers.
After doing all my skin care I use benefit pore primer in the centre of my face and ren on the remainder. I find this works for me. I actually do use less foundation. Btw, I have dry skin with noticeable pores. 😃😃😃. xxx 🌻xxx
I don't apply primer to my whole face. I apply a pore filling primer only to areas where there are large pores and also I use a different primer during winters than summers. During winter I prefer using a face oil or just grapeseed oil which gives a beautiful glow and helps blend the foundation flawlessly.
I have a primer, although a cheap one. I didnt notice any difference to be honest so i stopped using it. Maybe a high end one might work or ones specifically to the brand of foundation. But i stopped using it. Went back to vasaline lol. I apply it and wait until most of it is soaked in. I know you shouldnt use vasaline but my skin needs it. I did put some powder on my eyes today to try and stop my mascara from transferring. Maybe i need an eye primer. But im scared to waste my money on it in case it really dries my eyes out. (eczema sufferer) Hence the very dry skin. Great vid hun :)
Yep..is a complete pain in the bum. Although im not using it as a primer as such. Its to try and stop my eczema from going to dry. I guess i could try and put a primer over that. What i need is a really good foundation that does not go matt dry. After a few hours my face still looks dry regardless because i cant find a good foundation. Im not very good with perfume either so have to be careful what i use. i have allergies also.
Never did till i saw the meagan markle tutorial. I just jug on the moisturiser. I do use a tad oil in my foundation. When i wear it. I love dewy being dewy. I use a loreal bb blur cream. Best thing since vegemite 😂😂😂 oh oh oh rcma powder . A MUST HAVE. glad to ser someone else uses the ordinary range. Its cheap as chips and it actually works .
I wish I'd found your channel ages ago! Oh well, I've got loads to catch up on :) this one was really helpful I've always wondered if primer is worth it. I might try some under the eye area but not put it all over my face.
If I had been privy to the bit about matching silicone primer to silicone foundations and water to water, I would have saved a ton of money and 9 months of confusion trying to get a good foundation look! Thanks Gema for all your tips!
I’m new to your channel and this video really caught my eye because I, too, rarely use a primer. I’m 40, have normal/dry skin with some pesky pores which I’m not particularly fond of. So yes, if I’m using a foundation that accentuates my pores I will use one. But...I recently purchased First Aid Beauty’s Tinted Moisturizer and was sent a sample of their Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer. I actually used the tinted moisturizer by itself (with a little jojoba underneath) at first, and did like it a lot. One day I decided to give the primer a go and can honestly say it made a very big difference for the better. I will, however, try it with my other foundations before buying the full size right away. Thanks for the video, and I adore the eye look:)
That was a great point about matching the type of primer to the type of foundation. That may have led to some of the problems I've had. I do like the becca first light primer, but dont use it every day. I just moisturize most days. Found that the silicone primers dont wear as well by the end of the day, they're too heavy and i found they got cakey as well. I have also found that I LOVED a product from a sample (primer, foundation, concealer), but then shelled out the full price only to find it didnt perform the same. Am i alone in this? I would like to see your thoughts on finishing sprays as well.
Susan Tarapchak I love a good finishing spray and they can be essential for some skin types. It’s very important to pick the right one for your Skin though as some have a high alcohol content and dry out the skin. X
Thank you so much for the video! While we are 'bombarded'with products and confused in the end, your video, to me , seems like a light at the end of a tunnel! Will definitely use primer on the eyes before the concealer to see if/how it works for me!Keep up, I m really sure you have much to offer here! Have a happy New Year!
I found your channel in the last couple of days. I really enjoy your presentations. I have oily skin and my makeup never lasts the day. I've been considering trying a primer to see if it would make any different, so a lot of good information here for me to consider. One of the biggest take-aways I have here is that it may just be that I need to find a different foundation. So some experimenting to come for me. Thanks for sharing.
Gemma, (I hope I’m spelling your name right) I used to use Clinique City Block as a makeup primer. My makeup lasted all day. I’ve noticed now that I’m using a heavier moisturizer and that the lines have creeped in, that I may need to absolutely need a primer under makeup.
I’d love to see an updated list of your favorite primers please! Specifically primers that won’t clog pores or make my face shiny, but is good for my 40 year old skin. Also should you wear primer under tinted moisturizer or bb cream?
Hi, new subbie here and loving your videos. I'm 63 and always wear a primer even when I don't wear any foundation. I love how it gives my skin an overall smooth finish and feel. I'm a big fan! I don't pay a lot for it mind. It's interesting to know about choosing the right primer for the foundation being used, I will be looking out for that, thank you, x
Have you seen the new ABH palette called riviera? It’s so gorgeous and perfect for this spring/summer. I’m sure I’ll be getting it as soon as I see it in the ulta I go to. I’m obsessed with her palettes and formula. Totally worth the money.
I know the official release date is 4th march but not sure when we'll get it in the UK. It's a little bright for me but I'll probably get it...I won't be able to help myself xxx
I find that most primers give me congested skin. I get breakouts the next day where I’ve applied primer in areas where I don’t usually get breakouts. I’ve been using my sunscreen as a primer. It’s a mineral foundation (non nano sized zinc) from a company called Mae Love. Makeup applies beautifully over this.
I'm turning 40 soon and wear only tinted primer and never/rarely wear foundation. I never liked the look of full coverage. I enjoy the imperfections on a person's face but understand everyone has different preferences.
Hi I am brand new to your channel. I use a radiant primer around primiter of my face. And my nose area and Chin I use Tatcha silk canvas. Love your channel. I am from Pennsylvania USA
I have never wore primer I prefer a light moisturiser either tinted or a foundation if I am going out, I used olay over the years and this moisturising seems to of look after the face using day and night over the years.
I bought a pore filler primer from the AOA studio, I paid it 83 euro cent and I just said " at least if it doesn't work out I spent only 83 cent on it" but it works great and I really like it. I have dry skin and I can't afford a lot of things so I never spend a lot of money on things that I'm not sure I can use. But this was great, maybe I'll try a more expensive one in the future.
Pampered Wolf Thank you! I really like your videos because even though I don't have "mature" skin I find that many thing that apply to it also apply to my dry itchy skin. Thank you for your work and effort :)
Well I guess it 58 I'm going to try not using a primer tomorrow sometimes I feel like my Foundation gets heavier with it. I just always learn something from your videos and I really appreciate them have a wonderful evening at least this evening where I am here in the US
How can you tell if a foundation is silicone or water based? I've never been able to find a good primer. I'm going to do as you suggested 3 days without primer). Thank you for you amazing videos.
Hi JoAnn. Have a look at the ingredients. If within the top 5 ingredients you see lots of words with 'cone' at the end of the word, then the product is silicone based. Most water based primers also have silicone in them but they are much further down on the ingredients list. Xxx
I'm so glad I found you yesterday your videos are great, fair and so informative the best makeup videos I've watched on TH-cam n I've watched alot as I am a makeup addict xho n great content from a fello brit 🇬🇧 ✊
Being new have you done a tutorial for your eye look today? If not could you please do one?! 😀. I was bought a Guerlain L'or primer for Christmas......it's got real gold flecks in it and costs £75 for 30 mls......now thts expensive 🤭!! X
Hi Heidi, I will definitely try some spray primers. One of my other subscribers has mentioned they use a spray primer and they sound a lot lighter than a primer in a tube. Thank you for your comment xxx
With VERY large pores on my nose, I need a primer to fill those in. It doesn't stop Foundation from settling in my pores completely. But I need every little bit of help I can get in that department.
I'm going to take your suggestion though go without it for a few days. I did that yesterday and truthfully I'm not sure if I noticed a difference! Thanks a million!! I like that you talk about makeup for more mature skin. I'm 44, so I think I'm older than you, I DEFINITELY have much darker circles under my eyes, and have more wrinkles than you under my eyes, so I appreciate the perspective. Xx
Before I started using primer I almost stoped wearing foundation! My aging skin would make my makeup look so bad. It really makes a difference for my long work days, Sometimes 10-15 hours. I understand its not always needed on all skin types and some of the sunscreen will also serve as a primer. But I have to have it on most days or I will hate my makeup later !!!
Primer is to correct problems and increase longevity of foundation. Like I said, it's not always necessary so always try without first in order too save money, but some people need it xxx
Between spending on a primer, versus moisturizer, which I have never done, because I've always been afraid of break outs. I there a good moisturizer, or serum, that doesn't cost a fortune and won't be likely to break my skin out? Sorry so wordy.
Ive ditched the creams and opt for serums instead which tend not to block the pores as they are such a light consistency. I like all the serums from The Ordinary (My favourites are Buffet and Matrixyl) and I also like the serums from No7. All very good and none pore clogging xxx
I started using primers so that my lipstick wouldn't bleed into my lip lines and so that my foundation didn't sink into said lip lines. I started with No.7 and am now using NYX. I feel like it helps. Is there a better option for minimizing lip lines?
Hey there...have you done a video of how to make your makeup stay in place, generally speaking? It annoys me to see my face around 1 or 2 in the afternoon and see some redness peeking through. Thanks!
If the product is silicone based then within the top 5 ingredients on the ingredients list it will have products with 'cone' at the end of the ingredient name. Dimethicone is one of the main silicones. If they are in the top 5 ingredients then there is a lot of that ingredient within that product. There can be silicone in water-based foundation....but these will be nearer the bottom of the ingredients list as they will be much more diluted xxx
claudia ramirez you can do that but that’s not something that I do. I often mix a few sprays of setting spray in with my foundation but never primer. Try it and see if it works. It won’t damage your skin so it’s worth a try xxx
Yes, The main ingredient in most foundations is water, however, the following ingredients are all silicones so if your foundation/primer has any of these in, then it's highly likely to be silicone based. Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Trisiloxane, Trimethicone, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Caprylyl methicone, Phenyl trimethicone,
You are not fair on primer use. I use primer. I think a good primer makes the makeup stay on longer. Oils can cause skin irritation and breakout. I don't follow the rules you suggest because a good primer keeps even the cheapest makeup on. I am serious. My favorite primer is Smash box. I have used it for years. I don't get breakouts either. Smash box doesn't have color which is an added benefit. I have used other primers and some are clumpy and some are cakey. Personally I think you just don't like primer. Try Smash box.
In the video I said that 'some' primers don't do anything. You need to test your foundation out with and without the primer to see if it's worth the money. If it does a good job, then buy it, if it doesn't don't. Some primers are a waste of money. You have obviously had a great experience which is fabulous. I might try the Smashbox ones. I've tried everything else of theirs so I might as well Haha xxx Thanks for your comment xxx
Pampered Wolf In my area we have high humidity so a good primer is nesseccery. I understood what you said. I am just saying a good primer makes it easier to apply makeup. Even a bad drugstore makeup is vastly improved with a good primer. I have tried other primers and gotten samples, but in my opinion, Smash box is the one I keep returning to. I also have had no breakouts with this product. I do enjoy your videos. They, for whatever reason, do not sell Max Factor in the states. I wish they did. That was good makeup. I haven't looked through all your channels, but have you done any on good mascaras?
Have I gone mad,! Watched lots of your videos for the first time, this evening, and I definitely haven’t had anything to drink but have you changed your eye colour and the shape of your face or is this your sister doing this video, Help! As I think I’m going crazy
Hi Jacqui, I've been on youtube for just over a year now. During that year my weight has gone up and down by about 14lbs as I was training for an event. Depending on what weight I was at the time depends on the shape of my face, and I do wear blue contact lenses from time to time also. xxx
Pampered Wolf ahh that’s so kind of you to reply it make more sense now lol, so not going mad , I wish you and your family and your lovely mum A Happy New Year xx

Your eye look in this video is beautiful!
Wow well done Aurora B. Always best to try out first. xxx
Xxx
@@PamperedWolf very helpful, thank you!
I'm so glad I found you yesterday your videos are great, fair and so informative the best makeup videos I've watched on TH-cam n I've watched alot as I am a makeup addict xho n great content from a fello brit 🇬🇧 ✊
Thanks Gemmz. We also have the same name. I'm a Gemma too xxx
Pampered Wolf I know lol sister from another mr pmsl x
Your skin looks radiant.
Being new have you done a tutorial for your eye look today? If not could you please do one?! 😀. I was bought a Guerlain L'or primer for Christmas......it's got real gold flecks in it and costs £75 for 30 mls......now thts expensive 🤭!! X
😳 Wow you're right. Lucky you that it was a gift though xxx
could you do a demo on this eyelook please pretty Pleaseeeeeee 🌻🐨💕
You have got far too much foundation on and completely the wrong colour for your complexion
I enjoy your presentations and honesty.
Everyone says about pores but I don’t even know what they look like I do prefer a spray primer to a tube type one find them greasy x
I agree Katrina. Sometimes primers are a necessity. Thank you so much for your comment xxx
Xx
They help my large pores as well. Most of the time I only wear primer and no foundation at all.
Katrina Brooks I have the same problem
This might be a stupid question but...how can you tell if your foundation and primer are water based or silicone based?
If it's silicone based the ingredients will have a lot of items that end in 'cone' xxx
Hi Gemma @Pampered Wolf, what are some under eye primers that you highly recommend?? Thank you!!
I like the Smashbox hydrating under eye primer xxx
@@PamperedWolf thank you Gemma!!
Thanks!
'How to stop foundation rubbing off your nose' in the how to playlist Julie. xxx
When you say use oil, what type of oil do you mean?
How do I know if my foundation (Luminous-fit me-Maybelline) is water- oder silicone based?.....
Thank you very much,@@PamperedWolf !!
The best primer is the veil hourglass
Can you recommend one for sensitive skin?
Perfect instruction! Will share this
I've read that you can mix your primer and foundation. Would you recommend that?
claudia ramirez you can do that but that’s not something that I do. I often mix a few sprays of setting spray in with my foundation but never primer. Try it and see if it works. It won’t damage your skin so it’s worth a try xxx
Pampered Wolf thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I just might try it 😊
I use my bio oil
How can you tell if a serum or a foundation is silicone based or water based?
Yes, The main ingredient in most foundations is water, however, the following ingredients are all silicones so if your foundation/primer has any of these in, then it's highly likely to be silicone based.
Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Trisiloxane, Trimethicone, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Caprylyl methicone, Phenyl trimethicone,
Thanks!
I love primers, I feel like my make-up is smoother I use a spray primer and it works for me....
Linda Johnson That’s great Linda. Like I said, if you find one that works for you, keep using it x x x
I'm also going to start wearing the primer under my eyes as I really did see a big difference in that area. xxx
Also see pigment better with eye shadows with a primer.
I've tried everything else of theirs so I might as well Haha xxx
Thanks for your comment xxx
Pampered Wolf In my area we have high humidity so a good primer is nesseccery. I understood what you said. I am just saying a good primer makes it easier to apply makeup. Even a bad drugstore makeup is vastly improved with a good primer. I have tried other primers and gotten samples, but in my opinion, Smash box is the one I keep returning to. I also have had no breakouts with this product. I do enjoy your videos. They, for whatever reason, do not sell Max Factor in the states. I wish they did. That was good makeup. I haven't looked through all your channels, but have you done any on good mascaras?
Have a flick through Marie. There's a review on Charlotte Tilbury, Benefit and Chanel mascara. xxx
What about primers that 'lift' or supposed to lift?
'lift?' I'm not quite sure what you mean Josephine xxx
I make in home with glycerine SPF 😁
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm still baffled as to how we know what type of foundation we're using........ Are there long name ingredients we should be looking for??!! Xxx
Alison Tull I believe the main issue is oil based vs water based as she mentioned. When I can’t decide which a product is I just google it.
@@dcdawn Good idea 💡!! I forget about Google or Siri! Thanks Xx
@@dcdawn Thanks for letting me know 🙂. Xx
Just stick with moisturizer pass on primer
