*NOTE* I messed up! The Smashbox Primerizer is NOT a spray! If you want to engage and keep telling me, though, that's cool. Haha! Sorry about that! I've never tried that one. :)
Hey Jen, I am 45, no work done, no fillers, no botox and, frankly, impoverished--went on RSDI. I won't go into my story. Anyhow, I have severe insomnia and pain. Interestingly, my skin looks VERY different well rested, although I do find that claim a bit dubious for the majority of women.
Girl you could paste it on the screen over the whole video and people will still tell you it's not a spray lol..... it's kinda like how the teacher would always say don't open or flip the test over until I've read all the instructions, and there's always that one(or more) kid that just goes on and starts the test and thinks he's so smart bc he's going ahead and gonna be done first and then the directions are something completely opposite 😂
@@jenluv don't know how relevant would this be. I was watching a doctor talking about probiotics saying that it would work effectively if they included all the 700... varieties there are on the skin plus as you mentioned if they find a way to keep'em alive.
The travel sized smashbox primerizer is 0.5oz and only costs $15, the full sized is only 1oz and costs $42 so if you buy two travel sizes to equal a full size you’re saving $12!
Could you add a picture or text of what product you are talking about in the top right-hand corner? I kept forgetting what product you were talking about. I'm hope I'm not alone.
Hi Jen, UK subscriber here - i barely ever comment on youtube but I needed to tell you how much I appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos. I feel like a college kid at a lecture, taking notes and using them to shop - mainly to find cheaper dupes with the same ingredients cos I'm not really prepared to go bougie for everything 🙂 You have influenced my makeup and skincare purchasing choices for the better, thank you!
After a full night’s rest my skin looks: Wrinkled from my pillowcase Furry from my cat trying to wake me up Crusty around the mouth and eyes Puffy from sleep Smushed sideways if I’ve REALLY slept well
IconKumiho lived with cats all my live, have never got anything. I Crossed the road last year and was hit by a football coming from a school playing field! And don’t even look at the accident rate of incidents happening in the house
Hi Jen, Thank you so much for mentioning the xylitol being toxic to dogs. My dog ate sugar-free gum with xylitol while I was out of the house and almost died. Thank goodness my vet was able to save her. I am so lucky she lived, it was an awful experience, and I always love to see people creating awareness so hopefully they (or their dogs) don't have to go through that.
Jenn Michelle my dog has eaten a ton of Orbit gum and never affected her. Weird. I do keep it zipped up in my purse now but she loves the Sweet Mint Lol.
Jenn Michelle the same thing happened to my dog but luckily I noticed he’d eaten it within a half and hour. I had to rush him to the emergency animal hospital where he stayed overnight for treatment and he still wasn’t out of the woods for several days. Now every time I see someone in the grocery store checkout buying gum I ask if they have a dog and know about xylitol toxicity, just to warn them because a lot of people don’t know.
Another FYI about xylitol- that's actually recommended by dentists and it's very good for people who are prone to cavities. My dentist recommended I buy toothpaste, gum, and candies with xylitol for that reason. (Be careful, though... Too much can give you the 'rrhea. Yuck.) Anyway, point being, the first thing my dentist told me was about the dog thing. He told me to make sure to keep it all very much out of reach of our dogs.
As someone currently in pharmacy school that is posed with the "do probiotics r e a l l y work??" I've always been told that probiotics have the most evidence and research when ingested and digested. However, like you said, preservatives in products actually end up inactivating the cultures over time. So the longer the product is on the shelf after being compounded and packaged, the more the cultures present are inactivated. In addition, the more cultures present in the product the better the probiotic is "supposed" to be. Like you said, efficacy is definitely up in the air when it comes to probiotics.... but since it is known that the active cultures diminish over time and how long primers can sit on a shelf before being completely used up (or even bought).... I dont see it being a beneficial addition to the TooFaced Hangover Primer. LOVE your videos geeking out over ingredients, because I'm just as interested and fascinated as you!
Patrick thank you for this! I’ve always wondered since I use the La Roche Posay moisturizer that has the “thermal prebiotic water” i was skeptical weather it actually did anything
Patrick hey! that’s a good explanation (i’m a formulator, also with a pharmaceutical background daughter of a microbiologist); however i’d like to add that most instances of probiotics are actually extracts or filtrates - essentially, dead bacteria cell smoothies or the byproducts of their metabolism. these work as chemical signalling substances that purportedly deter the growth of undesirable bacteria. since there are no live cultures, preservatives can be added without issue; live cultures, i.e, in Mother Dirt’s products, are actually the exception and raise a lot of issues with packaging and preservation (products need to be preservative-free, refrigerated and with a very short shelf life). this is, of course, still not researched in-depth beyond the cellular culture level, and more clinical studies on human skin need to be carried out to fully support the claims, but it’s certainly a fascinating area of cosmetic innovation and research.
My primer is my holy grail can't live without product. I just bought EIGHT back ups just in case they discontinue it. That is how much I need it. It is the product I longed for 30 years ago before primer was invested. Cover Fx Blurring primer makes my enlarged pores go away, and just tinted moisturizer on top gives me the best, almost flawless look, and lasts without breaking up or wearing off for 14+ hours. With good skin care, my skin looks better with that primer & ultra light coverage in my 40s than it did with foundation in my 20s. Can you tell how much I love this product?
The Boxy charm Pop Up had that and two others that I adore for so cheap, I couldn't resist snagging one of each. If I didn't have so many as it's, I may have bought even more! I adore the CoverFx blur primer and agree, it really makes my skin look great. I have a handful or so that I can so actually do that.
Adventures With Carissa this also happens to me. I always wear primer even if I’m going without foundation, or concealer. My routine is to use Elf Poreless Putty Primer on my T Zone, and some on my cheeks on any areas where I seem to have enlarged pores, then on the rest of my fact I use Bare Minerals Prime Time Original Primer. On the days I want/need some extra luminosity, I use NYX Bear With Me Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Radiant Perfecting Primer instead of the Bare Minerals Prime Time. Just be careful with the NYX, because when they say radiant luminosity, they mean super glowly! Recently I found something that works almost as well as the ELF Poreless Putty. You can find it in a regular drugstore, as well as in the drugstore section inside Ulta. It’s called Catrice 1 Minute Face Perfector (comes in a small glass container similar shape as ELF Putty). Just FYI, it’s a “One Color Fits All Shade 010” and appears as a light brown/bronze with maybe a hint of red. I’m super fair & pale, so I had concerns that this would just be too dark. The jar says it will adapt to all skin tones and can be used as both a primer or foundation. So I decided to give it a try, and I was completely surprised when it did hide and blur my pores and the color looked great on my skin tone! I believe I have have discovered another product to help blur my pores and be able to get out of the house quickly without having to put on a bunch of foundation and concealer. Good Luck!
The Cover fox mattifying primer is the only one I’ve ever used that allows me to look glowy but not greasy. I apply it and let it dry down for about 10 minutes *if you ever feel like trying it).
I'm 51 and have learnt over the last year or so, it's the illusion of a poreless, smoothing primer that we love. I've used a lot of brands from Lancome to e.l.f and the 'smoothing' capabilities of them only last an hour so. From the time I apply them to the time I get to work, the pores and wrinkles are back. I've used different application methods from pressing to using a brush to a synthetic sponge, nothing is really effective for the long term. I've even tried a double application from Fenty to then pressing in a poreless one, lasts again only an or so. I've come to accept only some laser resurfacing or some sort of micro dermal abrasion will bring back any youthful looking skin...sigh. Also, let's face it, when I was young and wrinkle free, there was NO such thing as primer, not even 10 years ago. It really is a new thang for the already youthful.
OK, assuming I'm JUST trying to keep the color from caking up in the fine lines, not hide that I've got some, did any of the primers help the color even out? Or is the foundation still amplifying the lines? because i remember 90's makeup where my lids and under eyes were the only places I bothered to apply to help with shadows and dark circles....but now I'm getting a mess. When you're trying to mask a bit of violet and the color shifts right to the fine lines....OMG this amplifies the problem. The same issue is happening any time I can find a pale enough color correct for the under eye. Yellow or peach lines with purple high point contrast isn't helping.
Agree. I never even used foundation or primer till I turn 38! I'm 40 now btw. Always used eye makeup tho. Just felt like as a youngin I didn't 'need' foundation as I had healthy looking skin. Boy those wrinkles come fast tho!
This is one of the most useful videos I’ve watched, nobody every talks about the ingredients and how primers work and I’ve never understood them and always thought of them as another way for brand to make more money. I’m so glad you made this video as I now know what to look for in the product
I’ve got so many primers from hydrating to pore filling and I can honestly tell you.... I DON’T KNOW THAT ANY OF THEM ACTUALLY WORK! XOXO loved the review!
I’m an oil slick... If I don’t use the Smashbox Oil & Shine Control Primer my makeup slides off of my face!! This is after trying out a TUB full of primers that don’t work and using no primer at all... LOVE this video 😀😀😀
Same! I use oil controlling primer on my nose, and T zone in general, and I really do think it makes a difference! I use a different primer, or none at all, around the outer portion of my face.
Can I just tell from the top of my lungs: YES, YES, YES!!!! Your platform is so huge and I thank you, from the bottom of my heart for talking about skincare before the primer. I work at Sephora and it's so many women and men who look at me like I'm growing a second head!!! Once I tell people my age, then that's when they listen.... Skincare and makeup are hand in hand!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Primerizer is not a spray, it’s actually in a pump bottle. I really enjoy it and think it helps my makeup application and I have very oily skin!! Thanks Jen. Love all your reviews!!
Jen Luvs Reviews hey Jen! They do have a primer water that IS a spray and launched around the same time. So maybe that’s what you were confusing it with.
I do notice a difference in my skin when I'm rested. My skin is plumper and my acne scars are not as colored. By the end of the day or if I havent slept well, they are really dark and apparent
Alyssa Joy I notice the same thing! If my skin always looked like it does when I first wake up in the morning I would feel the need for a fuller coverage for foundation!
I have redness all over due to my red hair and pale skin. I NEED to use a color correcting primer, one that the green pigment correctly melts with my skin and counteracts the redness. I have ageing skin so can be dry but I don’t want to look like a space alien! I found most correcting primers are too cakey or have green in it but as soon as you pat/rub it on the skin its gone and I’m just as red as ever. I finally found my savior and it melts into the skin and ACTUALLY does what it claims. It is NYX Color Correcting Primer Base in a squeezy-tube. The tube matches the tone its correcting. Its not the one in the pot. You can find it at Ulta or some makeup artist stores like Namies (at least here in California). This has glycerine, silicones and the ingredient you mentioned for making foundation last as well as silica. Its cheep and beets several of the ones you mentioned, trust me I’ve tried them & its fragrance free.🥰
I am SO happy to have found this in-depth explanation. This video was like a masterclass in primers. So many of the videos I wasted my time watching before this one were too far in the direction of ‘Here is my face with various products applied’ for me to be able to glean any useful information. Thank you thank you thank you for taking the time to perfectly format this information. I am currently 38 and have been struggling with my makeup-to-primer-to skin relationship for a few years now. Thanks to the detailed explanation of the 🎉function🎉 of the common ingredients found in primers, I now feel like a much more educated shopper. Thank you SO MUCH!
1. You are always so responsible when giving your thoughts and sharing information. It’s fantastic and so are you. 2. Thanks for doing such an in depth video on primers. I love a good deep dive!
I really hope you see this, and are possibly able to answer. I have 2 questions. 1~ I own the Good Molecules moisturizing primer. Can I use thus as my AM moisturizer, or should I stick to a regular moisturizer, and use it as my primer? 2~ I have huge pores over my entire face; forehead, cheeks, nose, upper lip and chin. Only place I don't have them is on my neck. I always use a pore filling primer, but I like the idea of using a moisturizing one as well. Which order should I apply them? My gut is telling me to pore fill, then use the moisturizing primer. P S. I do have a good system of am and pm skincare that I follow, and let settle in at least 15-30 minutes before I begin applying my makeup. Thank you so much!!!
Regarding the "natural is better" movement: Cyanide naturally tastes like almond. So does synthesized almond extract. Which one do you want me to bake into your cookies?
5 minutes in and I am so impressed with the amount of research you definitely did for this video. I can tell you really have a passion for the beauty industry. You are your own beauty editor honestly. I absolutely loved watching you nerd out over products. 😕
You’re 100% correct. Jen totally misunderstood that. Tatcha is saying with the silk canvas it will keep other makeup from getting in your pores by the silk canvas acting as a shield. They never said the silk canvas itself won’t get in your pores. Not sure how Jen misunderstood and got that one so wrong to be honest?
I’m 43 and when I was younger we didn’t have face primer we would always moisturize and to be honest with you it’s still works really good that way! I’ve noticed for me when it comes to certain primers like let’s say for example the company touch in soul I actually combine their primers
This video is so necessary. Jen Luvs out there doing the work for us, once again. I used to have terrible problems with my skin eating my foundation. By lunch my makeup would be gone. I changed my skincare routine and added a ton more moisture and I don't have that problem anymore. The pore filling primers that work for me are the ones that are very whipped and creamy with some color tint in them as well. The NYX "dupe" for mineral veil, The Angel Veil or the Pixie green pore filling primer for example. Thanks to this video, I can look at the ingredients of my favorite primers to see how they stack up. Re: Vitamin C and E being together and the claim that there is no "preservative" in that Bare Minerals primer. I think Vitamin E is paired with C so often because it is a natural preservative. Vitamin E is super common in nuts because it helps the oils in nuts which go rancid quickly, stay good longer.
Loved this video! However, please note that at the moment cyclopentasiloxane is a suspected endocrine or hormone disruptor (at least in Europe) so I don't know if it would be the best of ideas to apply it on your skin everyday... Keep up the energy and awesome work Jen!
A K Bonner it’s hilarious to me that we’re now adding this to makeup products. I see lactobacillus and I think ‘yea, that’s for your gut’ not ‘oh, pretty skin!’
I recently got the Elf putty primer and I will say, I think it's the first primer I've ever tried that makes a difference. My skin is changing a lot at the moment due to ageing (I'm 38), being much more dehydrated and getting any base to not look terrible is a new challenge it's thrown me. I feel like the Elf primer is helping. And yes, my skincare is top notch!
Another great deep dive into a specific kind of product. You have no idea how much I appreciate these videos! I go back to them many times when I am wanting to try new things. I do find it strange that the Tatcha as well as the Elf primer does not fill my pores well, but the Revlon one does. I actually use the Pore Blur primer from Makeup Revolution and it works best to fill my pores. It has Titanium Dioxide & Iron Oxides which i don't think you mentioned at all. I think when it comes down to it, primers are just like skin care and mascara, they are very subjective to the person using them. I have to use primers. I have combo/oily skin and large pores. If I don't use primers, my makeup doesn't look as good or last as long and I get very oily. And trust me, there are days that I forget to put on primer and I can totally tell the difference.
I am obsessed with my coverfx mattifying/acne control primer and I 100% see a difference in how my BB cream applies AND how long it lasts... since I work 12 hour shifts I am constantly wearing the crap out of makeup. I've accidentally skipped it before and it is noticable. I love your knowledge of ingredients and appreciate the depth of these videos!
Hi Jen, I just wanted to say thank you! Such an incredible in-depth review of primers, I really found this interesting! As an “older” subscriber (53), I thought I’d add a few thoughts...I literally have tried 95% of all of these primers! I had to relearn how to do my makeup in the last few years, as my skin went from oily and fairly acne-prone, to much more dry (thank you menopause). My pores are large, I think due to massive overcleansing and scrubbing my skin when younger. Both the Tatcha and Tarte smoothing primers worked horribly and pilled massively on me. The Hourglass Mineral primer...I never understood the hype. But one that I don’t hear a lot about is the Hourglass No. 28. I haven’t broken down the ingredients, but it is working great for me. It “feels” like it will be oily, but it’s not, just helps the dry spots stay flat. It really helps keep my makeup last and yes, it feels nice and silky on the skin. Anyway...there are a couple on your list I think I’ll try. Thanks again for all your hard work!!
Jen, I love your reviews and I appreciate the time and effort you put into your research. One point I noticed, however, is that you (quite rightly) say that denatured alcohol is bad for the skin. But actually alcohol does not need to be denatured to harm your skin, it's the molecule itself (ethanol, or C2H5OH) that's damaging. "Denatured" just means that some bitter taste is added to the alcohol so people won't drink it. It is cheaper than drinkable alcohol, that's why cosmetic manufacturers prefer to use it. Our skin however will be damaged by the alcohol, not the minute amount of bitter taste.
This is true! Just "alcohol" is just as damaging. I think people get confused when we bring in terms like cetearyl alcohol thinking it's the same as denatured alcohol or just alcohol. :)
@@jenluv totally agree, it is confusing. Perhaps we could say that as long as something comes before the word "alcohol", is is usually fine - such as cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol or cetearyl alcohol - the long-chain fatty alcohols, also benzyl alcohol which is a not too irritating fragrance. But as soon as we see just "alcohol" or something behind the word, such as "denat", we should beware.
WOW!! Video is not what I thought it was going to be. 5 min in like another person said, so impressed with your research! Restarting my makeup/skincare journey after many years I’m still trying to figure out primers. Didn’t realize the hydrating ones are basically like a skincare product and the blurring ones are almost same but with silicones! I haven’t tried any hydrating primers, I need blurring but not having any luck with primers. Thank you!! So so helpful & informative! Please do this with SETTINGS SPRAYS! ❤️🤘
thank you so much for helping me save so much money by buying products that actually have ingredients that will help with the issues I have instead of reading the claims and trusting them without knowing what it is, I really wish there was hair product info TH-cam like this
As a dedicated Smashbox Primerizer user of several years, I was delighted to see your verdict on it! I offer one correction, however, Jen: It is definitely not a spray; it's a liquid with a pump dispenser. Thanks for your continued good work -- yours is one of my very favorite TH-cam channels. Cheers!
I love that you know so much about ingredients, as not professionals consumers and because of the lack of disclosure, we usually ignore the ingredients, which are the most important thing to look when adding things to the skin, *specially* de the face skin. If you want to know more about ingredients of skincare, I recommend Hyram on TH-cam, he really gets into the ingredients list of brands like The Ordinary, Drunk Elephant, Glossier, etc. We aware, he's a little bit harsh, but he has his reasons
I have a very red complexion, so I do use a green color correcting primer to even out my skin before doing foundation. The two I have and like are one from Pur, this one leaves a VERY matte finish, and one from Nyx, which is pretty glowy. So I'll use whichever one works for that day's look. I just feel like I don't have to wear as much foundation and concealer with the color correction underneath.
I really wish I found your channel much earlier because I enjoy your content so very much! You’re informative but don’t BS! I love how cool and down to earth you come off and I just all around enjoy your videos! Hope you and your family have a very happy and healthy new year!!
I used to cake on foundation and powder before I started using primers that worked for me. I use a pore miniaturizer on my cheeks and a mattifying primer on my t-zone. Less foundation, barely use powder now
I love you for mentioning the xylitol. My dog will eat anything, including primer if he could get his paws on it. He ate an entire package of gum and luckily I noticed within 30 minutes that he had eaten it. I had to rush him to the emergency animal hospital and paid $2k for him to spend the night there after they induced vomiting. He threw up a lot of the gum but his blood sugar levels were still dangerously low. I had to bring him back to the vet every day to have his blood checked for a few days afterwards. He’s ok, thankfully, and he didn’t suffer any liver failure. He’s a big dog, almost 100 lbs. If a small dog gets a hold of sugar free gum it’s even more dangerous. I won’t even allow gum in my house now. Xylitol is present in toothpaste too so please, please be careful dog owners! We all know about chocolate but raisins, grapes, onions and garlic are all things that are poisonous too! 🐶🐶
Very informative. I have used several of these and none really seem to work. I have used drugstore and high end. I keep trying to find one so this video was very helpful.
Diane sullivan my grandmother too, any time I smell a cream that resemble that scent takes me straight back, to granny in her bed putting her cream on her face neck and hands , when I think of it, her hands were in water a lot, she scrubbed the cloths by hand, wringing too , scrubbing floors etc all getting her hands stuck in, gardening too, no gloves, yet she had the softest of skin , her sands so soft her skin silky . Thank you for your comment taking me back to those memories 👍
Diane sullivan I watch a lot of Dr dray and she likes the ponds cold cream too (the fragrance free one). Genetics definitely takes a part in it but there’s a lot that can factor into that. For example, has she always used sunscreen? Sunglasses when she’s out in the sun? (squinting creates fine lines and wrinkles over time) Has she ever been a smoker? Stays hydrated? Always Being gentle with your skin (trying not to pull or tug) helps too. There’s a lot lol
I bought the Tatcha silk canvas on sale too and didn't love it! I'm interested in trying the Milk Makeup hydro grip primer! Thank you for making this video and being so informative with the ingredients! ❤❤❤
I got the primer and it balls up my foundation, everytime I use it, which annoys me considering the price. I think it's because I have dryer ageing skin, I do love the luminous spray though!
I use the Tatcha just through my T-zone, where I have issues with getting "polka-dot pores", where my foundation will settle into the pores and look like I have polka dots on my face. I don't really need it anywhere else. This helps it last a bit longer, since it so expensive.
This is really useful video - I know there’s some people saying they use a moisturiser as a primer and I’m like “moisturisers don’t act as primers though” or some think it actually physically minimises pores when primers are actually part of prep makeup so it means more cosmetically reduces the pore/lines appearances which makes sense to me. The other factor on how it works how long you wait after applying it to put foundation etc on - I’m always experimenting with that as I noticed that has slightly (slightly) different results too. I find primers that are genuinely designed as intended for makeup do work to even skin for makeup application and last a little longer. I’m curious to know whether green tea detoxifying action works if you apply it to the skin? It works when you induce it but that’s different way of absorbing into the body.
Wonderful video SO INFORMATIVE!!! Please consider doing a series in this format, I love how you broke down the different needs and then did a “what to look for”’summary at the end. Thank you for all of your hard work and research!!!
My daddy hauled fertilizer for years. Urea is an ingredient in fertilizer. So when you sang the praises of Urea, I was like whaaaaat? 😂 It's amazing how so many things can be used for so many completely opposite purposes. 😂
I stopped using face primer last year because the foundations I use typically have the same benefits (pore-smoothing, long lasting on their own) and after testing side by side, there was really not a huge difference by the end of the day. It's definitely dependent on skin needs for sure. If anything, I may use color correcting primer if I have a lot of redness or a highlighting primer if I want a glowy look but I don't use it on the regularly.
I’m liking the First Aid Beauty coconut skin smoothie primer moisturizer which I received in an Allure beauty box. I would like to know your opinion on this one. Also, is there a difference between eyeshadow primers and face primers? Seriously, how many products do I have to buy?
There is a big difference! Eye primer tends to have a more of a waxy base or something that will make a barrier between your super oily skin on your eyelids and your eyeshadow. Using a concealer as an eye primer also doesn’t work the same as using an actual eye primer. Eye primer is a necessity, but you can skip the face primer if you want to. If you can manage to do both, that would be best though!
I mix the Wet N Wild eyeshadow primer with my moisturizer (just a tiny bit) and it's the best primer I've ever used. It's less than $6 and does everything I need it to do. I also use it under my eyes and my concealer looks like a dream. It smooths fine lines without feeling like a heavy, slippy dimethicone layer, and makes my makeup last all day. The texture is light and almost lotiony, not thick or pasty, and it's completely transparent. Honestly, eyeshadow primers are known for smoothing, keeping oils from breaking up your eyeshadow, and extending the wear of a powder product you are putting on a moving, flexible surface. I don't know why they don't put this technology in face primer, especially for oily skin targetted products - it's everything oily skinned people are looking for! Anyway, if you have a couple bucks to spare, it's worth picking up. A tube lasts me scoot 6 weeks and even if you aren't using it for your face, it's amazing on the lids and undereyes as well. Just my two cents.
Gosh I love these videos, Jen! You put so much hard work into the research and it truly shows! I recently stopped using primer all together just as an experiment, I only use my Ceravé daily moisturizer now, and I swear my makeup lasts waaay longer! I do want to say though, if anyone actually sees my comment.. Retinols are a huge no no if you're pregnant! I was using one faithfully before pregnancy and my midwife advised to stop immediately as it can have serious effects to your unborn baby. I do very much miss it as a treatment but little Beans health is way more important.
So great ... you do the long hours and hard work for us to listen to OR not. Thank you for what you do..such great information KUDOS to you and your channel. I listen and then make decisions! Love u girl. 68 years and i still know nothing! You educate me.
Glycerine is brilliant for dry, ageing skin as is urea, especially for diabetics. Sometimes simple is better. Eye primers makes all the difference for me. I haven't found a ride or die one as of yet but I'm always on the lookout.
Do you prefer an eye primer that goes on clear or one that's tinted? I'm absolutely obsessed with the essence i love colour intensifying eyeshadow base (tinted) but the essence you better work eye primer is pretty good too
@@superevachick I haven't tried the essence one yet but will keep a look out for it, I do prefer one with a little bit of pigment as it helps cover my genetic hyperpigmentation.
I have to agree with you on eye primers. When I was a teenager we didn't have one available (hell, we didn't have most of these products available, lol). Since I didn't use liquid foundation, still don't (knowing now that some people only use that to help with their shadows) we had no choice but to use muted eyeshadow looks, lol. After yrs of not using makeup except for a special occasion I got back into it. Part of my first makeup purchase was an eyeshadow primer. It was on the cheaper side and just ok. So I decided to do some research after watching a few guru's. The one I bought next was the UD primer potion in Eden which is supposed to be specifically for oily lids. After some trail and error I love the way it works. If you haven't given it a try you might want to. Hopefully you live in a country that will let you do a return should it not work for you. Good luck on your hunt... 😉
@@eddiemartinez1364 unfortunately Australia doesn't allow returns on makeup for hygiene reasons they say. I believe sephora allows it though, and urban decay isn't sold in sephora in au, so that sucks. I use the ABH eye primer and that works, but I only use it on special occasions because the price of makeup is astronomical here!
@@cherub73au Awe, that's too bad. I refuse to buy from a store that doesn't allow returns but in your case, you really have no choice. When I bought the UD primer I was a bit floored because of the price. I mean it's just eye primer, lol. I don't use makeup everyday so I wasn't sure if it would be worth it but for me it was. Glad you have something you can use for those days you need it though... 😉
Thank you for doing this...I have a question, however...WHY on earth would Milk (or anyone for that matter) put Xylitol (a sweetener?) into ANY product that is meant for the face? What actual purpose does that serve-are people eating this?
I have crazy dry skin and pore filling, silicons primers makes my foundation slide right off. The only “pore filling” primer I can use and I love is nyx angel veil.
Thanks for doing all this work for your audience. I love this series. It made me realize I have 10 primers that are basically the same, but it makes me a more informed consumer for the future.
I currently use the Revlon Pore Refining Primer &feel that I get baby bumps under my skin/foundation over long use periods!!! However, as you mentioned I have been really lazy with my Skin care routine, of which includes BHA'S&AHA', Salyslic&Lactic Acid &Retinol... When I begun this very specific Routine, I noticed a HUGE improvement with my Skin, Acne &Pore Size!!! So I have to get back to that, thanku!! I just HATE ever being "Make-up Free", I get Anxiety just thinking about it!! You are SO Brave Jen to be before the Camera, Bare Faced at times, as you film ur Vlogs!! The majority of Brands you tested today, are "NOT for Sale" in Australia, so most examples, were not applicable for me, but I used to be In love with a Gel Based Napolean (within the cheaper Rage of his, I also have the dearer range choice - a white creamy one(&i don't like it & is pricey) & I miss it to bits!!! I'm guna get me back on my Skin Care Regime &see how that changes my results with my Revlon Primer!!! I'm sure this is the answer, as you mentioned!! Kind Regards &Many Thanks, Kylie, Sydney, Australia
Years ago I used to use Mac Prep & Prime face primer which has good skincare ingredients such as antioxidants, vit E, etc but it is expensive nowadays. Personally I stopped using expensive primers and now use men's Nivea Aftershave Balm for sensitive skin, it has aloe in it as well as silicones and does the same as any silicone based primer! If I had to try any of those you mentioned, I would try the Revlon. Thanks for another informative video, so much appreciated!
Just a heads up about the Tatcha primer. I purchased a mini, used some of it, and kept it closed and in a drawer for 2 months during the Winter. When I went to use it next, there were tiny black wirey-looking growths coming in and out of it. I flipped out, threw it away, and replaced it with the Elf product. I thought the Tatcha product did help to make the pores on my nose appear smaller. But at that price, I am not happy with having to throw it away so soon.
I have very oily skin and the combination of primers and setting sprays have been total game changers for me over the last few years. These products help to lock everything in place and increase wear time. My fave primers are Makeup Revolution Pore Blur, Too Faced Primed & Peachy, NYX Pore Filler and The No Pore Blem from Touch in Sol. An old school fave primer is the Ultraluxe Pore Minimizer (formally Sonya Dakar). Fave setting sprays are the Pacifica Pineapple Flower Oil-Free Matte Mist (for use after foundation and powder) it has hyaluronic acid and helps to set and meld together by face base. For final setting, my fave is the Too Faced Peach Matt Spray. And Urban Decay All Nighter for special occassions or photos
Thanks so much, Jen!! Your lip balm video was so great (& helped me find & love Lanolips 😍) & now you gift us with Primers! Love it. Would you consider doing a video on setting sprays? ♥️
If you use a certain brand of makeup, would it be best to stick with the primer made by that makeup brand? Do brands make their Primers to work best with their Makeup line?
Editing Jen is secretly sabotaging Jenluvsreviews :P lol. This gives me an idea what kind of primer would be ideal for me. Thank you for making this video!
Just an FYI, xylitol is toxic to dogs and cats. It can also be found in some sugar free gum and is definitely one of the more toxic items for small animals. It is a lot worse than chocolate, even though people really know about chocolate more. Awesome video! I definitely needed advice for face primers!
I use the Smashbox photo finish reduce redness primer. I bought that before I got my skin care under control, which good skin care took care of most of my redness. I will actually just use it on it's own or with a BB cream and I really like it. Thanks for all of the info. And I agree with Laura K, please do one of these for setting sprays.
Older viewer here...I am loving the ELF putty primer, it fills my pores beautifully. Love it even if I am not wearing foundation, it blurs fine lines and wrinkles.
Thanks for all your research. Your information is helpful. The only primers you covered that I have tried are from Smashbox, Bare Minerals and ELF. None of those are my favorite. One that I like is FAB coconut skin smoothie priming moisturizer. I like the Soap & Glory Hocus Focus which is an Illuminator. I just received two new primers from BoxyCharm to try: PUR 4-in-1 correcting primer and Touch in Sol Pretty Filter Glassy Skin Balm. We’ll see how those go. I mostly need moisturizer. I use a little silicone primer near my nose for small patches of enlarged pores on both sides of my nose.
I second the opinions of doing this for setting spray. I don't use a spray, or powder, half the time I don't even use primer. I think it's all VERY gimicy. However, I would like to try a powder to see if it keeps my foundation from smudging when I'm in the studio doing art. I have oily skin, in general, and have recently found I over-clean my skin. I've started using the ordinary zinc/niacinamide, with my olay sensitive, and it has made a WOOOOORLD of difference. I can't see my pores really, anymore. Nor am I pulling sebum plugs out every other day. After about two months, I use the zinc/niacinamide maybe once a week and it helps keep things in control. No more tub of BHA, no more over exfoliating - just cleansing with water and trying to keep this aging face hydrated!
*NOTE* I messed up! The Smashbox Primerizer is NOT a spray! If you want to engage and keep telling me, though, that's cool. Haha! Sorry about that! I've never tried that one. :)
Lol. Maybe pin this comment at the top?GREAT video Jen! Thanks for all the work you put in 🤩🤩

Hey Jen,
I am 45, no work done, no fillers, no botox and, frankly, impoverished--went on RSDI.

Such an accurate description. Those marketing people clearly weren't thinking
Hi Jen,
Thank you so much for mentioning the xylitol being toxic to dogs.
I’m so glad your dog is okay! How scary!
@@julieo4580 orbit doesnt contain xylitol. It uses aspartame as the sweetner.
Thanks for the information. Good to know.
I’m a man I need to understand what’s going on here 😣

She really does! ✨👍🏼💐
Me have no idea which face primer I should get 🤷🏻♀️
Adventures With Carissa What’s your skin type? I’ve been using Elf’s putty primer and I really like it.
UR Hilarious...
Betsy/BA BF I am like that with my mascara and eye primer. I buy several just so I don’t run out, or they change the formula.
I have the cover fx blurring and this is like.putty which is good to hide pores or lines. I dont like many primers but this ones a good one.
Betsy/BA BF That one is supposed to be amazing
The Boxy charm Pop Up had that and two others that I adore for so cheap, I couldn't resist snagging one of each. If I didn't have so many as it's, I may have bought even more! I adore the CoverFx blur primer and agree, it really makes my skin look great. I have a handful or so that I can so actually do that.
Betsy/BA BF could I ask which tinted moisturizer you use?
If I skip primer I tend to break out! Using a primer makes a huge difference for my skin
What face primer do you use?
Elle S me too Elle!
Good Luck!
I have extremely oily skin. I've never found a primer that I felt extended the longevity of my base. I use a lightweight moisturizer and sunscreen.
The Cover fox mattifying primer is the only one I’ve ever used that allows me to look glowy but not greasy. I apply it and let it dry down for about 10 minutes *if you ever feel like trying it).
@@Heyitskrystal thanks for this. I have oily skin and am always on the search for a good primer.
@@Heyitskrystal I'm willing to try it. Thank you for the tip!
Same. My sunscreen acts as a great primer.
I love the Your Good Skin Mattifying base. You can get it at Walgreens and it really does help. Bonus points is that it is less than $10.
Amen to you, sister I hear you and feel your pain. I agree 100 percent on what you said. I would like million times more if I could❣
I agree, I am 52 , and there was no such thing of face primers. I remember using foundation as a eye primer.
Yellow or peach lines with purple high point contrast isn't helping.
kristine-the-cat-queen...'it's a new thang for the already youthful."...ultimate irony 🤣
Agree. I never even used foundation or primer till I turn 38! I'm 40 now btw. Always used eye makeup tho. Just felt like as a youngin I didn't 'need' foundation as I had healthy looking skin. Boy those wrinkles come fast tho!

Oh! Thank you! I really thought it was a spray like a setting spray, but a primer version. Thank you!!!
@@dani10390dp same!
My skin care is my primer.
Ok that's good to know since I never put on foundation without moisturizer. Dry skin life 🌵🌵🌵

Is “Makeup Breakdown” taken??
Maybe "beauty breakdowns"
@@sb5969 It's taken! It's someone's username and she does K-Beauty hehe.
My take: Tacha is trying to say the primer keeps the rest of your makeup from getting down into the skin.
Yes. I believe this is the claim.
I agree. I think that primers in general, SHOULD form a barrier between your skin and the makeup applied to it.
Why is the quality on this video so crazy good? It's great! Love your videos and bringing knowledge to the masses.

Dear editing Jen, the face you stopped your video at was a crack up! Love you girl! Love your videos!!!!
This is my second time watching this video- been decluttering my makeup collection and today is “primer day,” so, here I am. Thanks for all the info!
Some people just don’t like silicon/dimethicone. I don’t like how it sits on my skin and doesn’t sink in. Has nothing to do with “I think it’s bad”
Do you have a favorite non-silicone brand you'd recommend?
@@minkwink88 you would have to find water based primers

As a dedicated Smashbox Primerizer user of several years, I was delighted to see your verdict on it! I offer one correction, however, Jen: It is definitely not a spray; it's a liquid with a pump dispenser. Thanks for your continued good work -- yours is one of my very favorite TH-cam channels. Cheers!
Thumbs up just for your face when editing Jen paused in the beginning. Absolutely perfect. My compliments to the chef! 👏👏👏
Well... I guess 38 won’t be the year “penetration enhancers” stops making me smile. Maybe next year. 😂
My husband walked by during that part and said "definitely don't need that" and we both laughed. We're 27 and 37 😄
Omg, Pam! lol 😂 ps: great catching u live last night!
😂😂😂 I'm 50, and still laughed about that one! So don't expect it to probably EVER stop entertaining you!
I normally use Hourglass mineral veil primer and Smashbox. I have oily skin and I love them both. Have a great week. Mad love to you..❌✖❌
Lisa Smith hourglass mineral veil helps my base last all day with oily skin too!!
@@Outrageous86 It is really good. I can't live without it. Take care..❌✖❌
I have a very red complexion, so I do use a green color correcting primer to even out my skin before doing foundation. The two I have and like are one from Pur, this one leaves a VERY matte finish, and one from Nyx, which is pretty glowy. So I'll use whichever one works for that day's look. I just feel like I don't have to wear as much foundation and concealer with the color correction underneath.
my skin usually looks the best just after I wake up (and it's all downhill from there), so I kinda get the "rested look" thing tbh
onerva for sure. My skin is all red after a long day so my rested skin definitely is plumper and smoother looking
It’s probably less about sleep and more about how while you’re sleeping your skin isn’t as exposed to irritants
I really wish I found your channel much earlier because I enjoy your content so very much! You’re informative but don’t BS! I love how cool and down to earth you come off and I just all around enjoy your videos! Hope you and your family have a very happy and healthy new year!!
Thank you for all of your research! As a fellow research geek I really appreciate it.
Should I be worried about the sodium chloride (aka salt) in the ELF Putty Primer?? 🤔🤔
Please do this for setting sprays, concealers and foundations!!!!
Great video and would love the summary listed here as well, but definitely not a complaint, you did SOOOO much work! Thanks!
I used to cake on foundation and powder before I started using primers that worked for me. I use a pore miniaturizer on my cheeks and a mattifying primer on my t-zone. Less foundation, barely use powder now
What are the products please?
With large pores and scars...a pore filling or blurring is essential...and i can tell a difference!
same here!
✋ABSOLUTELY!!
which one do you recommend?
Tricia lubi sri vectin has a blur fector and tarte timeless putty prime
Very informative. I have used several of these and none really seem to work. I have used drugstore and high end. I keep trying to find one so this video was very helpful.
My grandmother used ponds cold cream for years, no makeup, her skin was beautiful way into her 90’s ! Probably genetics too.
I really appreciate you enunciating your words so the English autogenerated captions are accurate for once 👏🏻💙
I use the Good Molecules and then smush the Tatcha on my nose and cheeks where I have potholes on my face. I didn't like the Tatcha by itself.
Stephanie Busch The Milk primer is amazeballs in hot weather!!
On the rested skin I feel like when I've slept well my skin is plumper around my eyes. I find that I have more visible fine lines the worse I've slept
Your daddy?
Thank you Jen!!!! I love these videos and helps me spend my money wise! I now know exactly I love the bareminerals prime time!
Yes!! Loved your lip balm videos and now looking forward to learning from this one!
I have completely changed my skincare routine, to all hydrating CeraVe products. I haven’t needed a primer since.
Nikkiy Loja Dr Dray fan?
Me too! Cerave has really changed my skin, who needs primers when you have great skin care
Kristin Rae I feel like a brand new person!!! I absolutely adore the gentle hydrating cleanser!
Angie Ray I am!
I have crazy dry skin and pore filling, silicons primers makes my foundation slide right off. The only “pore filling” primer I can use and I love is nyx angel veil.
Pretty sure the "silicone alternative" in Good Molecules is Squalane.
Thanks for doing all this work for your audience. I love this series. It made me realize I have 10 primers that are basically the same, but it makes me a more informed consumer for the future.
I use the Juno & co Primer and love it :) Love these in-depth videos! I'd love to see one on foundation
Niacinamide is a great skincare ingredient though it can be irritating to people with sensitive skin.
Yessss I have been waiting for this video right here right now. Thank you!
Katie J I’m going to check the lip balm video next, so THX! I’m a lip balm enthusiast.
you can always tell Jen's background in education, she reminds me of that cool teacher I had in school where I actually loved learning something new 💗
If you use a certain brand of makeup, would it be best to stick with the primer made by that makeup brand?
Do brands make their Primers to work best with their Makeup line?
Editing Jen is secretly sabotaging Jenluvsreviews :P lol. This gives me an idea what kind of primer would be ideal for me. Thank you for making this video!
Haha!
Just an FYI, xylitol is toxic to dogs and cats. It can also be found in some sugar free gum and is definitely one of the more toxic items for small animals. It is a lot worse than chocolate, even though people really know about chocolate more. Awesome video! I definitely needed advice for face primers!
The Tatcha claim is talking about keeping makeup out of the pores like a barrier, not the primer itself out of the pores.
I think the tatcha saying stop clogged pores and breakouts by keeping the makeup out of pores by filling pores with primer
