You are one of the greatest carvers on the Internet. I watch you over and over I am amazed how you take a block of wood then bang its something spectacular well done
Thanks Kevin for ANOTHER great video!!! I learn something new everytime I watch one of your videos and hopefully, it's making my carvings a bit better! Thanks again for all the time, effort and expertise you put into these wonderful videos! Safe carving to you and yours ALWAYS!
Just subscribed!!! Very nice bit of carving Kevin. You seem to "feel" your way through your work which is the approach I take now. Its very satisfying. I like to see the juicy flat plane cuts too. Excellent! Will be looking through all your vids now as this is the first I've seen. ATB from the UK.
WOW !!! Another awesome piece Kevin, could you tell me what wood your using ? I've been using bass and elm but I just can't get a clean finish like you can... Thanks again for sharing Kevin. keep them coming 👍👍
Thanks. I use white pine pretty much all the time. Usually I buy 3/4” pine boards and laminate them to whatever size I need. Last week I managed to get a 6ft x 12” pine board that was a little over 1” thick. Now I have lots of material for my carving videos
Kevin, I saw you talking about the fish knife. I’m trying to use a roughing knife with a point. When I wear gloves, they seem to get in the way and I can’t feel the wood as good. When I pull them off, I knick my finger with the point of the blade. Maybe a cut down fillet could work for me too. Just curious. What brand are you using? I really like the shape of the handle. Old Hickory doesn’t have the same shape , at least what I can find. And the fillet knives that do are stainless not high carbon steel.
Bruce I cut myself so many times when I was learning to carve. Pretty much everyday. I was just careless and didn’t wear any protection. I have two fish knives. The longer blade one I think is a Green River. Not quite sure on the name. The shorter blade one that I mostly use now I haven’t a clue on the name. This knife is 40 odd yrs old. The Green River boning knife I think is available on Amazon.
Kevin Coates Thanks Kevin. I’ll have a look at the Green River. Looks like that you just cut them down to 2.5 to 3 inches. I’m just guessing of course. I appreciate your patience and response.
Do you ever have any problem with your peices splitting I carved a little guy the other day had a crack end up right down the center on his backside, you can guess how I managed to salvage it but seems like just about every piece I carve ends up splitting.
Hello Sir 🙏 I'm inspired by you and start whittling. It's been 6 days I'm doing it daily for 5 hours continuously. So i have little bit pain in my wrist is it ok?
@@KevinCoates98 Thanks kevin. Now will take break after every half hour. Well when I start whittling I didn't realize the time and just do whittling. I'm beginner so jave to work for 4-5 hour on one piece.
A really great peace of art. I really liked that you let us see you painting him. What kind of paint is that, that you use on your carvings? Thanks so much for sharing all of these videos with us.
You have some killer skills. It would be great if you would talk a little and explain what your doing. Getting closer on the fine details might help too.. I don't know if anything would let me produce a carving like that. I just don't see how you wind up with that carving using the knife you use. One minute its ripping through wood like crazy and the next your cutting in details that I can't replicate with a detail knife.
Thank you for your kind words. As for me talking and trying to explain what I’m doin with words wouldn’t help anyone. I’m not big on talking. Last year someone asked me if I would put a video on TH-cam of myself carving. There were people interested in what I did so I kept doing the videos. If someone gets some benefit from this that’s fine with me. It takes little effort from me because I’m carving everyday anyway. With regards to the knives I use what’s available to me. I don’t do everything by the book. I taught myself this way using what tools was available to me. I try to do as much as I can with the fish knife and use the flexcut for the detail. I can probably grind the tip of the fish knife to a point and do it all with it. Maybe one day. In my opinion carving is like anything else. Just keep practicing and you will get better.
Kevin Coates I am slowly starting to get better thanks to videos like yours. Thank you for taking the time and effort to upload these. Its a huge help to have resources like this when your just starting.

Thank you. It’s nice to know that they are some benefit to you. I will do more when I find a little spare time
Thanks Kevin, the facial detail you achieve is amazing and gives me something (else) to aspire to. Currently imitating how you do the eyes.
Good to know that you get some benefit from these videos
Greatly enjoy watching you carve. Your skill with the big knife really inspires me. And the detail knife too. Thanks for the video.
Good to know. Thank you Kevin
Beautiful work.. love watching you carve.

Thanks Kevin, by the way your are a GREAT carver and I enjoy your channel very much. Thank-you!

Man, I love watching the carving with this knife. I swear it's like you're peeling a potato it goes thru it so easily!
Thanks Phil. Most of the I use is fairly good for carving. There’s the occasional piece that is not so much fun

Thanks Pete, I don’t usually plan out how to do it. I just go with the flow
Excellent! So talented 👍🏻

Hear that sound of the knife cutting throug the wood. It´s amazing how he uses his thumb to lead the knife
Excellent, thank you

Thank you
Great video. Kinda looks like a person I remember from my childhood.
Thanks. That’s where the idea for this one came from. Someone I remembered from my childhood
What a talent!!
Thank you
When the wood split at 11:15, I felt like watching thriller. If it were deeper would you consider using glue?
Hi love ur videos I was wondering could u give some instruction on wot u are doing as there is much to learn thank s Barry
Thanks for another great carving! Do you sale any of your work?
Thanks. Yeah, I sell it all

Thanks for that Kevin, your pine must be different to ours here in Scotland as ours are full of big knots :( looking forward to your next...cheers
I laminate white pine as well. I find that it carves very well.
Oh ! I like this one.
Thank you Robert

Amazing
Thank you
Do you take requests for a specific character, and do you sell them ?
I do lots of request. I sell most everything I carve
Hey Kevin, Just found you here on TH-cam I really like this carving.what was the blank size when you started carving this little Old Man?
Thanks Mike, it was roughly 5” x 1.5” x 1.25”
Do you ever have any problem with your peices splitting I carved a little guy the other day had a crack end up right down the center on his backside, you can guess how I managed to salvage it but seems like just about every piece I carve ends up splitting.
I can only imagine how it worked out. I’ve had wood like it before but now I pick through the wood at the lumber store before I buy it.
Hello Sir 🙏
I'm inspired by you and start whittling. It's been 6 days I'm doing it daily for 5 hours continuously. So i have little bit pain in my wrist is it ok?
Good for you. As for the wrist pain, it’s ok to take little breaks every so often. I remember my wrist being like that at first
@@KevinCoates98 Thanks kevin. Now will take break after every half hour. Well when I start whittling I didn't realize the time and just do whittling. I'm beginner so jave to work for 4-5 hour on one piece.
I like that kevin good job
Thanks Randy
A little red on his knuckles?
what size of stock do you use for your carvings?
It’s roughly 1.25” thick. If I need thicker I just laminate
What kind of knife do you recommend for a roughing knife
I used a flexcut roughing knife before the fillet knife. It worked best kind
If I could carve a figure like this it would be a self portrait, old man with a walking stick. Thanks for another great demonstaration.
Thanks. This was
What I was about to say before I hit the wrong tab was...... I carved this one from someone I remembered from years ago
Where do you get your carving wood?
Kent or Home Depot most times but recently I got some 2” pine at Home Hardware
Great job . Thanks .
Thanks Glen
You are very good
Thanks Magnus
Where do you sell your work?
I get people contacting me either through email, Facebook or Instagram

It’s roughly 3cm x 15cm
Kevin Coates thank you sow much i am big fan of your work. Keep on doing it!

Kevin Coates quite fluid and beautiful. Can you explain the fish knife? Was it a filet knife that you cut off or was it always that shape? Thank you.
scott forslund thanks. It was a fillet knife. I cut it off and use it for a roughing knife
What’s the wood Kevin ?
White pine
