    I am amazed with your videos. Trying to get back into carving after 10+ years. Even now as then I'm my worst critic.

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Marty, you know I have always been that way. Being my own worst critic. Never thinking my carvings were good enough. I finally gave up on thinking that way and just do it because I enjoy carving so much.

    Now this is a great video.....it show that if you have the talent, which you obviously have, you can carve with just about any kind of knife. Thank you for sharing, I wouldn't mind seeing this piece finished.Btw I bet a few cuss words were used when you hit that thumb....OUCH!!!!!

      @KevinCoates98  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      doggylv Thanks. I'll get a photo on once I get the head cleaned up and on a body.
      I had a few choice words when I banged my thumb.

    I have a really old homemade knife just like that, I've been carving since I was nine and I can hardly carve a tomato without cutting myself when I use it, It is crazy sharp. Wonderful display of craftsmanship.

      I bet I lost a total of 2 days of sleep just watching you carve. Is there some way I can buy a piece of your work. The one you are doing right here would be fine. Just tell me how much and where to send the cost. Thanks my friend.

      sloanIrrigation thanks. The knife was originally used for filleting fish. I cut about 3" of the blade and turned it into a roughing knife. I'm working on
      what I hope is an easier video to follow.

    Can you please do a video explaining how to pick good wood to do this with I'm having a hard time with grain patterns affecting the carving process also most of my carvings seem to end up splitting how do you keep from that, thanks for any help

      This is the way I did it 17 or 18 years ago when I started. I still do it today. I guess old habits are hard to break.
      Besides that it takes some of the stress of my when I'm carving 7-8 hrs a day.

      @@KevinCoates98 how do you sharpen the beast. I use a strop. And i have a flexcut carving knife. And still have trouble cutting
      This basswood. Is white pine softer.??

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The white pine is soft. I just use a little stone when need be and a block of wood with honing compound. Nothing fancy

    Don't need several expensive carving knives. Learn to sharpen steel. I have seen people using box cutters and doing amazing work. Don't give up on your first try.
