Thanks for being here with me! I appreciate you all and truly hope you NEVER encounter these Snail Leeches if you have a brood of snails that you love dearly. I look forward to being here with you all a lot more here in the near future. I do hope this video finds you all well and snail leech free! 🐌💜

Lav, I love your content. It’s helped me so much in raising my snails. It breaks my heart to learn what you’ve been through. I’m curious if you’ll procure more adult snails to replenish your decimated population, or just wait until the current babies grow up and replenish the population on their own.

Hi, Lavnyia, my name is Aiki. Your videos helped me tremendously when I began snailkeeping. My magenta and blue mysteries recently had babies. When they’re old enough, I’d be more than happy to send you some of the babies, free of charge!
I’m so sorry about your snails. That’s truly devastating. The babies I have are magenta and purple, and I would be more than happy to ship some to you.

Your videos gave me so much great information to help me get started and I’ve had so many successful hatches as a result. Hi Lav, I have really enjoyed your videos and keep coming back to this one. Im very sorry for your loss. The gentleman who brought up the Reverse Respiration - I have read thru a bit of that but I wondered if you found an explanation that is in layman’s terms! I have several new plants coming and I have a few young adult snails in my tank so I’m a bit nervous. I ordered some plants through Amazon. I read through your comments last night and it seems one person had this happen with plants from Amazon. If there is one person, there are more. I want to do this to my plants when they come. Is it correct in saying, place the entire plant in seltzer water, use something to hold it down, then place the plant in a dark location, and for how long? 72 hours? Please get back to me. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would very much want to take this precaution. Thank you in advance for your time. I have a 37 gal tank with 2 large chocolate snails and 2 young but growing very fast baby blues and I would very much like to order some magentas or violets from you when you’re ready!

This is awful Lav! I know how heartbreaking it is to lose one snail! But 8 tanks of your beloved snails! That’s just overwhelming and terrible! I’m so glad you posted this video. I didn’t even know such things existed. It was highly educational and I immediately ran to my 5 snail tanks with a magnifying glass to check each one to make sure I didn’t see any of these little nasties anywhere. We are all here to learn from each other. It’s important to know all the bad things w/ the good ones. My heart aches for you. I’m so glad you have returned! I look so forward to your post!
I was reading a journal article from a retired professor doing a mystery snail genetics experiment. Maybe you’ve ran across it before. He mentioned that most Mystery snails were female and you rarely get males. I was wondering in your experience if this statement was true?

Missed you!!! I was worried when you disappeared. I loved my snails I got from you! Please don’t feel embarrassed. This hobby can bring so much happiness yet rip our hearts out! I too have experienced a huge loss with fish I had for several years due to something that shouldn’t have happened but did so I feel responsible for their lost lives. I was physically sick. So please don’t hide under a rock! All my mystery snails have passed to just as you described yours! I have done nothing to my mystery snail tank as well except it running. I didn’t know what happened but it was just as you described! So you have taught me something as I had no idea why they slowly quit moving. Now I can know what to look for! I can’t wait to start over as I miss them! Luv u Lav!!!!!! So so happy you are back!!!!

Hey Lav. I've been keeping my snail shells ever since I had my first snail. I've never had great luck with mystery snails and my first attempt at hatching, I hatched 3 clutches but only 6-7 lived long and 4 remain now. One of those 4 had babies, and _that_ clutch was a great success, and I have 84 bigger babies and a bunch of little ones left over. Generation 3!
I'm sorry for what happened to your snails, but I am happy to see someone else who is also really into them. I've also had a lot of difficulties with my tanks lately, and I'm sorry you are too. But it is nice to see people overcoming these issues, because it helps me hope I will be able to as well.
I also think I will get some guppies for my snail tanks... I really like what you've got going on there. I was already considering guppies but this has only solidified that decision for me! Long live the snail armies! ❤ God bless you and your pets.

Lav I'm so very sorry for what happened! I hate that you are blaming yourself! You obviously love your snails and would never knowingly put them at risk!!!! There is a lot of information out there about bringing things in from ponds etc and that it's good for ur tank. I think that they are forgetting that some tanks contain life that can be absolutely decimated from following this advice! I had no idea about snail leeches until I saw this video. U saved me from making this same mistake by posting this and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I could of been in this exact situation if it wasn't for you and ur content. Please come back and continue your work! You have been such a wealth of knowledge and are a big reason why my snails are thriving. There isn't much info about mystery snail care beyond the basic care sheet so please continue your work here! We need u back!

I’m sure it was horrifying to lose so many of them. I only have a 10 gallon tank, so I usually just have 2 at a time. My previous pair of albinos just passed away. Hi Lav - Thank you for sharing your challenges. I began keeping stuff in aquariums during Covid. Your videos taught me a lot about our favorite snails, and I look forward to more. I had an infestation of little things in a three gallon planted aquarium. Nothing seemed to get rid of them. Until I added a goldfish. At the beginning, I put some water in a ten gallon tank with a sponge filter. The tank sat empty for a few days so I figured it needed a fish. I bought two feeder goldfish at Petsmart for less than a dollar. These goldfish may very well be magic. They lived through some pretty nasty water while I learned about the nitrogen cycle. Back to snails, the rather large goldfish quickly ate everything edible in the tank, ruined a bunch of plants, and disturbed the hardscape. After a week, no squiggly things, or duckweed! One of the things I have learned about this hobby, everything gets eaten at some point. BTW - absolutely love your snello recipe.

I don't know what to say. Don't beat yourself up, no good comes of that. Other people on TH-cam put stuff in their tanks from the outside. Father fish says to get a bucket water from a pond or stream with lots or organisms to start a tank as part of his directions. He's been doing this for 40 years. I would like to tell you that you helped me through the pandemic. I had a hard time, my mother had just died after Parkinson/Parkinsonia dementia. I was realling from the downward spiral, trying HARD to pick myself up when the pandemic hit. I got down. I used to listen and learn from your videos. Your voice is calming and you are so positive, encouraging and creative. I would listen to your videos even after I had the information down. I liked listening to the videos with snails and music. That was so thoughtful of you to post that. Now, I have mystery snails. I even let a clutch hatch and I knew what to do because of you 💜 Find peace Lav. You aren't perfect, you don't need to be. Oh I forgot to add that many years ago when I was new to the hobby I became interested in dwarf water lettuce and got some from a person with a koi pond. It was a major mistake and introduced almost every imaginable killing pest into my first two tanks, they had to be torn down and I also watched everything die and used many of the things you used to try and kill them. I think new hobbyists should be educated about this. It is such a heartbreaking experience

    Well that's horrifying :(
I feel like at that point, and I know very well how stupidly expensive it would be, but at that point it feels like the right thing to do is throw everything out and start over with all new tanks, filters, heaters, everything. I would be too paranoid about having missed something somewhere and having it happen all over again just as soon as things started to look like they were back on track.
Heck, I have a tank I just finished using as a hospital tank for my betta fish where I used copper sulfate in it (betta is doing great now!), and now I won't use that tank for any other purpose other than a QT tank where copper treatment is called for. I wouldn't want to put anything that is copper sensitive into that tank no matter how many times I clean and rinse it. And that's a pretty mild thing to contend with on the scale of aquarium trouble, as even copper sensitive critters do require at least trace amounts of copper as most living things do, but I won't risk that tank regardless. It is a dedicated copper-treatment only tank from now on. And that means the filter and heater and substrate and silk plants that are in it are also all now 100% dedicated to that tank and that use, and I will never risk using any of those things in any other tank. That's about $100 of kit that is now dedicated to one, infrequently needed purpose. Obviously not a very large tank, as a large tank alone could cost well over $100, and the other kit needed is hundreds more, so that does get very expensive indeed to replace even just one tank, much less eight, but it is more expensive to lose all the snails again when you discover that you missed cleaning one tiny spot in one corner of one filter. No good options at that point :(

I have a question. I have my first batch of snail babies. They have been in a breeding container. I set up a 20 gallon tank just for snail. How can I transfer my baby snail to there for ever home? Thank you for all of your videos. They have helped me and now I have my own baby snails. They are Ivory (White).

This is the stuff nightmares are made of. I'm so sorry, Lav. dasaltemelosguy from aquarium co op forum did some (a lot of) research and experiments and found that soaking plants in the dark in seltzer water (has to say "seltzer water", it's not "sparkling water" etc) in the dark, for 12 hours, kills basically anything. This process is called Reverse Respiration. Carbon dioxide benefits the plants, but since there's no oxygen for anything else, the other life forms/bacteria/planaria, etc die. We use silverware on top of the plants to weigh them down while they are soaking, so we can be sure they stay submerged. Note: delicate plants such as guppygrass can only be submerged in the seltzer water for 2 hours max. A microscope was used to confirm death of the organisms.

@@LavsSnails I’m afraid there’s no video on it. Just a bunch of research. It is posted on the aquarium co op CARE forum. If you type Reverse Respiration in the search bar of the forum it will come up. A bunch of people tested it and reported their results also.
I keep seeing videos about how things from ponds (old leaves etc) are great for fish tanks, but after seeing the horror in this video I’m NOT doing it! Ps I hatched 2 clutches in Spring of last year. They were so cute! I kept some and some were adopted to local hobbyist with a little care sheet and some crab cuisine and cuttlebone ❤️🐌

So sorry about all your babies!! Thank you for posting this though! One of my tanks kills every snail I put in there and it's just like you said they just stop moving and then die. I am wondering if this is what is happening and my beta fish is just fast enough to eat most of them 🤔

    • @LavsSnails
      @LavsSnails  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Perhaps! Look at the rim of the water line and along the swirls of the snail, leeches will also hide behind the Opurculum "hinge." Oh gosh, I hope you don't have them! Best of luck! And thank you 💜

Hi Lav. I am so sorry about your babies!! Welcome back!
Have you ever attempted to fix an operculum? I have one that is actually bent on one side. I have no idea how this happened, but it is sticking out at a right angle. Should I clip it so that it can grow back? She cannot close her operculum and so is exposed, poor thing. Thoughts?
