think this is a root that has came up under the dead snail as it was dark and full of nutrient so pull the roots and you will find them attached to a plant
I did excavate today, and sure enough the roots originate in the snail... and are headed to the substrate for nutrients...but perhaps a melted crypt or even little rhizome piece of something got pushed in there, or brought in by a shrimp/ habrosus corydora juvenile and then began to grow. if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I would have bet money on it happening the way you suggested it. which makes it more odd
Had that happen with one of mine. He died of old age and a plant did that. It freaked me out at first, I pulled it out and that's when I discovered it was crypts growing in it. It looks the exact same as what happened to my mystery snail.
I had a different weird parasite that killed all my astra turbo snails immediately, it would first appear on their snails like little sacs of eggs independently moving, the it start to spread all over the tank, covering food sources in a sac with some do sort of nucleus like head at the top and seemed to be able to stick to everything despite food. I will need to complete a massive water change and remove any residual of this strange white film that seems to work together around food to form a sac that sucks the nutrients out
That's new to me. It does appear like a crypt root of some type. One of my snails died and it got all fungus with fur on it. Cthulhu's portal might be a better name for it in your case.
My Mystery snail eggs haven’t been hatching and I happened to get a good look at a white with black stripes worm living in the cluster. Did you figure out what this parasite like beast is called?
I'm in the process of treating all my tanks for parasites. I think they came in on my assassin snails. I notice a ramshorn look like it was pooping out a long white worm, not roots.
Was it roots coming up from substrate? Do you know anything about snail parasites? I have thin thread like worms coming out from the shell of some rabbit snails and I can't find any information.
Maybe a near by plant root found the snail, as a source of nutrients, and deployed a load of roots in that direction. So they’re not coming out of the snail, but going in.
Not sure what's happening here. I have some pitting on my mystery snail shells. Do you know what causes that? I try to give plenty of calcium etc but not sure what's causing it.
@@alistercaddy1208 potassium is available in slmkw dose potassium permanganate in small amounts (whichs kills bacteria and parasites also). Or there's always all kinds "all in one" also. I wish you the very best!
Alexander, I recently had a racer pass away and this is the 'insides' of the snail. After death, it appears the muscle detaches from the shell. It looks like a seed sprouting, but no 😱
Yikes... in this case these had long roots that split off in 7 directions and those forked off etc. BUT that sounds awfull what you had happen and I'm sorry to hear that
Well, this isn't what I was expecting that's crazy. I found this because I'm trying to find out what these teeny black parasites if they are in fact so, are on my mystery snails?
Hmmm sounds like some sort of nematode or leech. Which is tricky, because the same meds to kill them, often kill snails... maybe a dilluted salt dip or some really tannic 6.5 ph type water? ( dont try that without researching online first...im just totally guessing).
@@Fishtory I scraped some off and put them on a paper towel and put straight tea tree oil on them to see if they would recoil 😆 under a magnifying glass, nothing! 🤔 I can't find my pocket microscope 🔬 I really want to see 👀

Are you worried if you chance leaving the dead nerite in there that it could cause an ammonia spike. I've heard that nerites can cause pretty significant ammonia spikes when they die.
excellent point! Yes normally I'd worry s bit, however this tank gets water changed 3x week. so I'll be mechanically filtering then probably adding some charcoal as well
ODG...what the F is THAT?? Seriously...take it out, put it under the microscope and find out for sure what the heck that is. I really want to know. That is the strangest thing I've seen in over 35 years of keeping aquariums, plants, fish, shrimp and snails. THAT is very strange my friend, very very strange.
Your snail probably had a belly full of this fresh plant when it died. It's decaying body would have been perfect food for this plant. Or it branched out to the source of the food which is your dead snail. I believe plant growth. Plants have a odd way about them. They can communicate
It is Dzéwà. I suggest you form a cult of worship & start making human sacrifices immediately. (or a stolon found it & tried growing a new plant, blocked by the shell🤷♂️)
I have up aquarium plants because I didn't have the knowledge of keeping them alive and the parasites flutes that plants can carry if you take care of them and if you do not take care of them really put me on blasts I mean who wants the nasty flutes attaching themselves to your pets seeing them hitting against aquarium objects to scratch themselves should be an sad sight to see just because you were not immediately knowledgeable enough to keep a clean tank or even so knowledgeable about plants with plants in it I just have silk plants now I leave the live plants to the experienced aquarium hobbyists I never want flutes terrorize my little Betta so I did my research first🐠🐟
Yeah, that's a really great idea, why don't you wait until total disaster befalls your aquarium before you remove something that you think might be a parasite. Good thinking.
I agree! I have like 10 others... If it's a snail parasitic fungi...I dont mind in that aquarium. If it's roots (I think it is) then I can't wait to see what odd plant survived a nerite stomach and grew it's way back towards nutrients in the soil

awesome to know! I confirmed today it IS a Wendtii pink flamingo crypt start... not a runner from the one on the other side of the tank though
Please film when you pull it out!! I’m very curious
Interesting thing going on there with the shell! Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed watching!

Could they be freshwater limpets?
Snail leeches

agreed 100%

Crazy... whatever happened with that lime-green disk that was growing awhile ago?
it sadly died after a water change...but it does still have some "baby colonys" left over and growing well
I'm in the process of treating all my tanks for parasites. I think they came in on my assassin snails. I notice a ramshorn look like it was pooping out a long white worm, not roots.
Wow that's so weird!! Perhaps it died soon after eating a plant or seed or one was lodged in his shell? Keep us updated! Love the puns ;)
Haha thanks for watching

Parasitic algae or water mold?

I thought the same thing but today I pulled out the stems and they all started in it. (with a tiny crypt sprouting out of the shell also)
Not sure what's happening here.
I have some pitting on my mystery snail shells. Do you know what causes that? I try to give plenty of calcium etc but not sure what's causing it.
It could be a lack of potassium and carbon to metabolizd the calcium...or just acidic water that needs more kh/gh more ph via crushed coral?
@@Fishtory the substrate is crushed coral. Is there an easy way to supplement phosphorus?

This would have totally freaked me out!
Do those "roots" move at all as you've moved the snail around? Either way, I think I'd be pulling that sucker out of the tank. Talk about EUW!
yeah they move a bit... I cant tell if its recoil and stretch or what....its definitely fungi or plant I think. so far no wiggling on its own
I'm not sure I'd wait around "to see" what happens and put your tank at risk. Frankly, it's disgusting enough as it is.
I believe that crypt lucens or parva that is next to the carcuss actually grew up out of the substrate and into the snail
that was my initial guess too, however the stem starts in the shell for sure
Is it possible that the colprit here was a parasitic plant that Cathulu choked on/ate/digested and thus began growing from the inside out?

I just uploaded a couple of shorts of them. First time uploading shorts sorry if they are terrible and my cat is loud 😆
To me it looks like roots are griwing into the shell
Yeah I wasnt sure at first either, but I can clearly trace them way back up into the shell and only 3 are firmly in the ground (the smaller end)
Whatever happened with your Cthulhu Nerite Parasite??
Never did sort that out! Lol
HOLD THE CAMERA STILL!!!! FINDING A NEW VIDEO! GAH! I TRIED!
My guess: It died, and the roots quickly grew up from the substrate into the decomposing corpse because it was full of nutrients.
I think that's the best hypothesis

I don't trust any of them lol

Playing favorites all cryps no bloods
Nothing special, once nerite died, it started to generate ammonia. Ammonia is good for plants :)
Wow. That is strange and wonderful in a nature being awesome respect. Will be interested to see what develops.
indeed Haha. I'll update for sure
did you ever discover what it actually was?

yeah very odd indeed. I'm almost positive it's a crypt root
