    I'm confused. Preply says you don't have to have a teaching degree to teach English, yet as I'm trying to sign up now, it tells me I need a teaching degree.

    • @MerchMetrics
      @MerchMetrics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is confusing I certainly do not have one. Are you sure it’s required?

      @@MerchMetrics Thank you for your reply. 🙂
      Preply caught my eye because it supposedly doesn't require one to be a qualified teacher. I work in the childcare industry here in Australia and actually do have a Cert III qual. which means I can work as an assistant in something like Outside School Hours Care or a daycare, but it is not a teaching qualification.
      When trying to set up my account with Preply, and I get to Subject Taught, when I click on English, I get this - "A teaching certificate or a diploma is required. To teach with Preply, you need to provide at least one document that proves you’re qualified. We accept certificates to teach any language and diplomas in education or in the subject you teach."
      Then, on the next page, it gives a drop down menu of different quals one might have (like TEFL) that I need to click on, none of which I do have.
      I thought maybe things have changed on the site recently, but I see some current tutors which don't seem to have teaching qualifications, and have found another part of the site which says that such quals are desired, but not mandatory.
      So... I'm not sure where to go from here.

      @@TheDoctor394 I’m curious if it’s a regulatory requirement of your country? I’m US based but it’s also been quite a while since I signed up so it’s also possible that it’s a requirement that didn’t exist when I signed up. I’d contact preply support and ask.

      Hi again,
      I got on to them and they replied. It seems the rules have changed and now any new people have to be qualified teachers. I let them know of what degrees I do have, and they said I could give it a try and see if I get accepted.

    Thanks for this video! I've been teaching online and at schools for over 6 years. In my opinion, if a company is willing to take 100% from any of your classes they don't value your time and/or they don't have proper infrastructure and funding to properly vet, care for and support quality teachers. I'm going to avoid them. Thanks again for this info!!

      I agree with you. I have been tutoring on Preply for a little over a year and Im disappointed at how Preply is so focused on taking as many tutors as possible which forces many of us to lower our prices in order to stay competitive. I’m a Spanish and English tutor. My native language is Spanish 🇲🇽 so I teach it to foreigners and my second language is English because I lived almost a decade in the USA 🇺🇸 so I teach it to Mexicans and locals living in my city here in Mexico. But I’m surprised for sure that Mexicans are willing to pay more money for an English lesson than Americans or students from other countries are to learn English. Why? I blame the platform Preply because there are so many tutors who undervalue their services and can even charge as low as $2 or $3 USD per class and that affects the rest of the tutors. Meanwhile Preply just keep getting more and more tutors to sign up because they’d rather earn a lot from small commissions among a large pool of tutors than earn big commissions among a small pool of tutors.

    Thank you very much for the video. It was really interesting and informative.
    But I would like to add that there are tons of teachers from all over the world teaching English, including the ones who are not Native English speakers.
    So anyone who is not from an English-speaking country, don't worry, you got a shot too!

    Your reward for a trial is a Lesson's package booked. Example. 10/hr tutor. misses out on that first 10 bucks for the trial. BUT.... student boos a 20 lesson package. Now that $200 income (commission aside) becomes 9.52 per lesson... Preply is marketing heavily. I have more students than I need. PReply brought them to me. ITs a lil smidge of income lost at the end of the day. This is my full time job now and I have done over 190 free trial lessons and IT is ok. A single student of mine has already purchased 3 x 20 hour packages to date... I don't mind that PReply got 10 bucks. They brought me an amazing student and income stream.

    they say you can make 550 pThe commission for every trial lesson with a new student is 100%. For all subsequent lessons, the commission starts at 33% and decreases to 18% based on how many hours you’ve taught on the platform.

  • @hilaryhongkong

    Preply is the worst platform I know. It's common for people to wait months or years to get any student, students can reschedule or cancel even after the class has passed by claiming the tutor has agreed to it (and officially they can reschedule or cancel up to 4 hours prior to it happening), and they do often block payments to you

    • @MerchMetrics
      @MerchMetrics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the insight, I actually had too many students try to book time with me so I had to reduce my hours down to only what was scheduled with my existing students. I wasn't about to do 20 hours in a week of all new students and earn nothing. Is there a better platform you've tried out?

      I have a couple degrees but not in teaching or in English. I have no TOEFL certificate. I think there's an important distinction between teaching and tutoring. I'm tutoring, I do not feel like I'd be qualified to be a teacher if someone wasn't already at a high level and just needed practice using what they already know.
