    I have been with Preply for about 4 months now and I decided to start with a low rate to gain students and reviews as soon as possible, now I have increased my rate three fold and I have 13 great reviews and I am still gaining students, so there is definitely growth, I can attest. Preply support has also been very good (especially, but not limited to, during my recent surgery time) and so has the e-courses and the webinars that they host. To anybody else watching this video, it is very honest and apt. I essentially agree with everything that is said here. Two thumbs up, one for Preply and one for this video. Thank you :)

    Hi,
    First of all I`d like to say a huge THANK YOU creating this video because I`m at the beginning of my application. I`m sure it`s going to be a big decision and your video was so helpful in a lot of way.
    In the past I was teaching private students face-to-face (never online) and they had a great time learning English and with my techniques they didn`t feel frustrated from their exams. I wasn`t always sure about my speaking skills level even with a teacher degree in my pocket (it didn`t mean too much comparing to my smart students` knowledge). Till 2016 I wasn`t abroad eg. UK or USA. They were too far and just a dream...
    But in July 2016 my dream came true and I got a job in the UK so I could improve and practice my accent :) but my elder and originally English clients could understand my jokes. It proved that my English is not too bad. Let`s laugh together. :)
    My motto is: "You can improve your skills and knowledge with time, no rush."
    Believe or not: my students whispered to me why I didn`t try to go abroad. I reckon we will see better days and please support us with new videos (avoid the trolls :D ).
    Many many thanks. Viktoria

    I will add a few things after teaching on Preply for nine months. Their policies favor the students. There are many circumstances where the tutors get the shaft. Students have free reign on the site and can get away with a lot to the detriment of the tutors.
    The lessons and Placement Exam are awful. Most experienced tutors are using third party platforms and websites for their teaching materials. If I had not found these then I would have quit Preply a long time ago.
    Preply's main competitor is Cambly and they recently announced that in most countries they will no longer offer the free trials to new students because of all the various abuses that were going on, including the waste of tutors' time. Will Preply follow suit? The tutors still won't get paid but this change will reduce abuses. It seems as if Preply recognizes that the students need to be pampered and protected at the behest of the tutors.
    I would recommend that Preply start paying 50% of the trial revenue to the tutors who have 200+ hours.

    • @SeoulForeigner
      @SeoulForeigner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's an interesting idea. I thought that perhaps Preply should pay 50% of the trial to the tutor if that student books classes and is considered a success. Just a thought. Again thank you for your input and I appreciate your insight.

    • @amandahuginkiss4098
      @amandahuginkiss4098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@SeoulForeigner Actually I just wrote to preply to complain about that and I'm just a student. I pay for the trial anyway so it doesn't affect me, but if I like the teacher and continue with them they should get paid.

    • @itssanti
      @itssanti 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The point that concerns me the most is the free trial lesson
      I am considering the idea to join Preply as a spanish tutor.
      My question is:
      Is there a limit as to how many free lessons are you appointed to?

    • @lisak1355
      @lisak1355 ปีที่แล้ว

      I work for Cambly and it's not true that they limit tree trial lessons in some countries. I wish that was the case, but it's not for now. Also, I'm not so sure how Cambly could be their competitor since Cambly has a fixed hourly rate and on Preply you could charge $50+ for a specific field and actually get paid. Not the case with Cambly.

    I love the opportunities and freedom that preply offers to it’s tutors. I have been using the platform for more than a year now and I don’t think I’ll switch to another platform anytime soon. Of course there are some issues (for me it’s mainly the lack of declining and blocking options). But: I never had any problems with getting students and have had some good experiences with support, which is why I’d recommend it to anyone.
    New tutors should be aware of the amount of competing tutors though. Try to stand out! I am teaching German, which is pretty lucrative. Being able to get students as an English tutor will be much harder.

    I appreciate you doing this video. I'm a newbie on the Preply platform and so far it is much better than the one I tried first, which was ridiculous because you would get notifications at all hours, which is understandable as you have learners from all around the world, but the challenge was that if you wanted their business you have *3 minutes* to respond to the prospective student! I found that to be annoying as heck TBH.
    I'm three days in and have two students who've bought packages of six sessions, with two more freebie sessions tomorrow. I figure if I can get about twenty students rotating in and out I can earn more than I do at my regular teaching job, without having to deal with a lot of the downsides of commuting and dealing with coordinators, etc. Cheers!

    Dear teacher Martin, it's me, Margaret here to listen to your talking. Thanks for sharing your mind with Preply. Well, I can hear the pros and cons. Actually, Preply is a nice platform for on-ling learning. Certainly, many tutor teachers to choose from. And Preply does offer some forms of self-learning or practicing. which is nice. Anyhow, we will still need to spend time on practicing it. Basically, we must get familiarized with the learning environment platform. Speaking of hour rate for Preply , I think it's its platform running overhead and expenditure ...and so on. As for tutors, I guess, that is one channel to get students. On the other hand, as teacher Martin, you may plan your classes or course on line for selling. It might be a great idea... Just a little thought to share.

    Hi Martin. Thanks for sharing your experience of the platform, especially as an experienced teacher dealing only with more advanced students. I specialise in teaching listening skills so that learners can understand fast-talking native speakers and only work with upper-intermediate to advanced students (not on Preply). Earlier in my career, I would often get stuck with A2 students as if inexperienced teachers weren't allowed to teach higher levels - story for another day! Anyway, maybe I missed it in your video but it seems that you're now able to charge a "decent" rate on Preply (not sure what it looks like exactly after commission, national insurance and taxes), but did you have to have a hustle period where you charged very low rates and worked a lot of hours? It seems that it's the only way to make these platforms work for you until you have a decent profile built up and your regular students booking and re-booking. How do you feel about that? I'm in two minds about it - I get that this is the unwritten rule of the platform, but I don't really agree with having to work for less than the minimum wage. I live in France and the rate in schools is €19 - this is a salary so you pay taxes and pay into pensions etc. It's perhaps not great either, but at least it's regulated and at least there's a floor. On Preply it seems that the floor is as low as $2.

    Great video and I agree with all your observations. A question I have which is probably fairly generic is about lesson material. I'd like to know to what extent is it permissible to use course book material incorporated into presentation slides for online teaching. Of course with due acknowledgement to the authors and publisher. I recently obtained the CELTA qualification and have joined Preply although not gone live yet. CELTA relied quite heavily on course book materials for teaching practice. Your views on this would be really appreciated. Thanks.

    • @SeoulForeigner
      @SeoulForeigner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a great question Phil. I would suggest using the coursebook initially as a springboard to help you plan your lessons and activities. Obviously things which you could do in class and things that students could do outside of class should help you. For example, any form of reading or writing could be prepared for out of class. Reviewing writing or conversational activities could be done within the live online class. You will learn a great deal by just jumping into the lesson and reflecting on what worked and what didn't work in the classroom. I hope this helps and thanks again for the great question.

    I tried to teach Spanish, which is my native language: No students. I am trying to teach French, which is my second language but I speak it as well as my first language (17 years of experience as a tutor in language schools and as an independent tutor): No students. So I really think that those who have students should be happy. Preply looks great, but to get students has not been possible. I am still waiting for them.

    Imagine you start on Preply and you get 15 students for $10 per lesson. You teach 15 hours with no pay. You maybe get 5 of those students to continue and with another lesson. 20 hours for $50 = $2.5 per hour. How is that worth it? Maybe if you do not have the qualifications to teach or live in a country where $2.5 per hour is acceptable then ok. BUT that's just the first wave as you want more students BUT there's the hook. So let's say you get a further 10 students at the low rate of $10. 10 more hours, no pay. Maybe 3 of those convert to the second lesson. 13 hours at $30. Now add the $50 from the first wave. 28 hours = $80. $2.8 per hour. OH and NOW if you're not American convert that to your currency at a mid market rate. And if you're living abroad then you have to convert again AND pay the ATM fees e.g. Someone from the UK living in Prague working on Preply. You'll be lucky to get 2 EUROS. And it doesn't matter how much experience you have. I have over 12 years experience and of course I am certified. Preply is a disgrace - unless you live somewhere where this money is good. Add to that if a student cancels, they DO NOT have to pay for your time thus wasting it.
    If Preply got rid of its 100% commission robbery, it would be ok.
    But it hasn't and it won't -it's run by greedy money grabbing ... ... ... ....

      I would always recommend potential language teachers who are passionate about getting into language teaching to undertake an introductory course, which in your case should be a TEFL or CELTA. Giving back 100% to the platform is ludicrous for an online teaching platform. My experience on another platform (with over 1,000 hours taught there and a 5-star rating) is that students either a) want to try different teachers, since there are so many of us, or b) they are looking to prepare for an interview, presentation, or meeting, and the amount of lessons they need are small. Of course I have long-term students, but as mentioned in your video, they are long coming. Good luck to you, but no thanks!

      I think it's to do more with the levels in the final mix and also the type of music as well. That loopy thing was really distracting for me - also, I generally watch YT at 1.5 speed or more. I know a lot of people that do this, especially when trying to skim through videos until they hit the "sweet spot".

    After two or three months you gonna face some new disadvantages, like the unreasonable freezing of your balance suddenly that you can't withdraw your money and you have to suffer with support in a process that may take months to unblock your withdrawals. and another disadvantage is if a student reported you...suppose some argument happened and the student just reported a small report...your account will be blocked totally and even your identity from Preply without one minute from Preply to see what really happened.. you may have a rude student that can throw that bomb which is a report and all what you built goes in a second.
    Besides suppose in one week you got 5 new students which is great and quick progress, Preply maybe suspend your account for a week investigating of that unpredictable progress which should be rewarded but actually will be punished! The support chat is the biggest problem in Preply that they don't answer you simply and days and weeks pass while your problem isn't solved!!

      You don’t have to have a University Degree but this would affect the remuneration that you earn. Most current English teachers nowadays hold a degree but also have completed a certificate qualification such as a TEFL or the more prestigious CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL. Potential students who wish to have a professional teacher will be picky and choose the most suitable, while those that wish to find a teacher no matter their qualifications or experience will choose such a teacher.

The speaker is very reminiscent of those long term ex-pat teachers with foreign wives that have completely cut themselves off from their home culture and have spent so much time abroad that they forget how to communicate effectively in the language they are supposed to be teaching.
    One of the first things we learn as EFL teachers is that we need to 'grade our language'. This doesn't mean talking to everyone like they're a low level elementary student, it means thinking about who our listeners are and adapting our speech to their level. As this video is aimed at teachers looking to use Preply to supplement other work, we can assume an audience of either native speakers of English or second-language English users at C1 or above. So the level of language used should be normal speed professional standard international English, like you would use if you were addressing a conference in the UK, but with an audience from around the world. Yes I know you can use this platform to teach Korean or Spanish ro whatever, but they'll have their own bloggers.
    The level used here would be appropriate for a tutorial aimed at A2 learners of English looking to use the platform to find a tutor. But for a native speaker teacher peer, it's slow, patronising, repetitive and boring.
    My biggest regret as a teacher was always using 'professional standard international English', normal speed or otherwise, with all of my students all the of time. I'm from just outside Glasgow, so it's natural for me to modify my speech with non-Glaswegians. What I should have done was gently phase in my normal accent, dialect and colloquial usage with the other teachers and students at B2+ onwards. This would have better prepared them for contact with English speakers from Scotland, which has a long historical relations with the place I was teaching (Gdansk). The point of native speaker teachers is to better prepare our students for English in the real world, sure we need to go easy on the lower levels, but we do a great dis-service to higher levels if we shield them from the real language.

      I’m sorry to hear that my speed of speaking is rather slow. I’ve always had issues with my speaking whether I’m talking to either learners or friends. It’s not easy for me.

      @@SeoulForeigner This 'grading of language', or 'know your audience' thing isn't easy for anyone, that's why politicians and big companies spend so much money it. We poor teachers will never have their PR spend, but we're supposed to be language experts, so we shouldn't need it. I sort of flit between teaching and other work, and between home and abroad, so I've noticed that long-serving teachers become somewhat detached from the home culture. I'd say it's quite a wide-spread problem, please don't take this as a personal attack, it wasn't meant that way.

      Malcolm, thank you for your comment. I wish you luck with Preply and it is much like a lottery I find when getting students to book lessons with you. Thanks ever so much for the sub! 😊
