    Just joined preply, less than 1 week. Havent done the onboarding course yet. Trying to gather as much information as possible. Can you explain or do a video on how you use padlet? Ive never heard of it. However, after watching your video, i went to research it and signed up for a free account, for now. Can you please share on how you use it in your classroom? Great video! This will help me a lot. Also, are we able to navigate the class room, and get familiar with the tools, before teaching our first student? Thank you for sharing.

    Normally I think of my first class as an introduction class. I will ask the student where they are from and what languages they speak. I will ask them if they like to travel and where they have travelled to? I will ask them about their job and what they studied in school. I would ask them about what they like to do in their freetime. Normally I will answer them as well. If i ask the student what languages they speak after they respond I will share that I speak mandarin at an HSK 3 level, I can read spanish and Portuguese as well as speak it at a conversational level, I can also speak Khmer at a conversational level. As for asking about where students like to travel I let them know the countries i have taught in. At the moment I live in Cambodia which most students seem quite interested in. Many students ask me what Cambodia is like so I will describe it to them. I also will say something in Khmer that i woudl if I were to go to market. I will express the challenges I face when learning the Khmer language

    I love your seamless presentation in the lesson.
    You made using the preply look so easy.
    My first ever trial class on preply is coming up tomorrow and I was wondering if you could tell me how you were able to navigate smoothly.
    I have tried doing some practice within the preply classroom.
    Example: I uploaded my lesson plan(A Google slide turned PDF) on the white board and I'm quite familiar with the editing tools there. But it was never as smooth as yours.
    Also can you tell me how you were able to edit word doc. within the classroom.

    I think what she wanted to know and learn is the slang commonly used per region in England. She has advanced English and she can communicate well. She probably wanted to know the slang words that an average British uses in topics like sports, politics... How come she couldn't understand the British but she has a high level of proficiency?
    Or maybe she has a problem with a British accent especially if a British speaks fast.

    My application was turned down unfoundedly. They copied and pasted in 2 emails that I don't meet the criteria to be a tutor on the platform, which is completely untrue, given that I have the qualifications and experience to prove otherwise. I spent hours trying to create an attractive and friendly profile, waited for days for my application to be accepted and instead I receive such a vague response as to why I wasn't accepted.
    This has truly been the worst application process and support I've experience in my entire life.

I'm just starting out on preply and although I think homework and self-study is very important, tbh I don't really like the idea of spending even more time - besides the lengthy preparation - outside of class prepping and correcting homework. Do you correct it in class together with the student? Or do you correct beforehand, then go through it together? Many thanks!

    • @ELTExperiences

      Thank you for your comment and questions. With regards to homework that I set, I check all work during the lesson with the student and focus on communicating with the student, providing the necessary feedback. While checking homework, I usually ask students their reasoning to certain answers. I hope this helps. I believe the correct term for this is ‘flipped learning’.

    Hi, Martin! This video is very useful, indeed! I wanted to ask you something... How do you share the zoom link with your student on Preply? And, after the lesson on zoom do students have to mark the lesson as done? Have you ever had any problem with that? Thanks so much!

    • @ELTExperiences
      @ELTExperiences  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Giuliana. Thank you for your question. The best way to deal with this is to share a Zoom link with your student once a trial lesson is booked - not before otherwise Preply will block your account. I usually share it in the comments.
      In this video, I used a pretend student who had been approached rather than a real student. The participant agreed to this and hopefully it replicates what other tutors may encounter in a real trial lesson.
      Once you have delivered the trial lesson, request the student to agree it or you could contact Customer Support to help.

    I'd switch to italki (I don't teach/work for them...yet) as tutors at PrePly aren't paid for the first lesson and aren't notified if a student has cancelled. I take lessons and taught (note taught as I quit) on Preply and it's frustrating. Some tutors are really good and a ton are who knows where from. I found a Spanish teacher and we study and pay directly and use Zoom. And their support is AWFUL. Good luck geting an answer in one attempt and in 5 days.

    Very useful video, indeed. I took lots of notes and I do have a question about the level of the student. How do you establish the level ? Do they do an initial assessment on the platform and, based on their result, you plan the trial /demo lesson?

    • @ELTExperiences
      @ELTExperiences  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I get students do an initial level test but I’m more interested in their conversation skills. While they are speaking, I am assessing vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc. This then gives me the impression of their level. After teaching for a number of years, you will start to know intuitively what their level is. I hope that makes sense.

    I enjoyed watching this video and the style of this teacher but it was a student already able to speak a fluent English. What would that be with a 6 years old child not speaking any English at all ? I wish I could see such a video because this one seems to me more like a formal conversation. Tomorrow I'm gonna have my first trial lesson with such a student and I'm a little nervous because in that case it's the parents who want to make them learning and it's way harder to find funny activities for such kids ^^

Sería interesante ver una con un "bigginer", en este caso fue con una persona en nivel C1 que se puede expresar fluidamente en el idioma que estás enseñando, pero me imagino que sería muy diferente con una persona que no hable nada de ingles. Sería muy útil. Muchas gracias por compartir tu experiencia y conocimiento!!😄

      The PowerPoint I created myself after going through some induction courses on Preply. The slides are available here: drive.google.com/file/d/1nETLxIcfC52Rqdgq-X4bivCmLnm-PXCO/view. I decided to breakdown the first lesson into sections:
      1. Get to know the student;
      2. Share materials that I use for the student;
      3. Give a demonstration of such material; and
      4. Get the student to sign up for lessons.
