I think you miss one very important reason why someone might want to stick with it... the elephant in the room. While $10 an hour for us is peanuts, for many of our tutors from other countries, that's good money.
Right off the bat you hit the nail on the head. At the end of the day, it's a "side hustle" and if it takes so much time (especially on top of parenting), efforts could be better placed elsewhere. It works for me on iTalki, but we're all different. Cheers for this video.
Lol. Preply is a big scam for tutors. I tried it and not definitely worth my time so I immediately deleted my account. Imagine 9 classes a day and only 2 of them are paid because 7 classes are trial. What a waste of energy and time. Plus you can't really change your rate cause $4 and up, students won't even book you. Yes kuripot sila. Sobra. Preply sucks. Don't try it.
I agree with you, it's low paid. However, if you are good at what you do, you should be able to gain students when they have a trial lesson with you. What I think is that trial lessons are too long, should be paid, and that Preply's commissions are too high. It's not worth working for them.
@@simplecommebonjour8352 ... they do not pay you for the trial lesson?? That's riduculous, then how did I get a lot of messages from tutors that I've visited their profiles.
Just signed up and set my rate at $20 per hour. I make this rate with some of my Chinese students who I teach directly. And it will discourage students who just want a cheap trial lesson and never come back. And if I never get a class through them I'm okay with it.
I've learnt a new English expression today: "to want to have your cake and eat it" . I understand and feel you, I also find it hard to balance private life and that kind of online job but for me it's ok because I don't have much friends, I'm not married and don't have any kid. or the moment I'm tutoring French there for 8 dollars one hour although I speak fluently Chinese, English and Spanish but I've never had a decent job in France. I'm thinking about getting a IELTS 8+ and start teaching English as well so if anyone have tips for that thanks a lot. PS: good luck and thank you for sharing your experience in that video.
Hey no problem, the way I learned that saying was “to have your cake and eat it too” meaning that you want the thing but not just to achieve it but to get whatever value from it as well. It’s usually not considered a good thing. Odd saying to be sure.
Nine dollars an hour! How can they provide good quality teachers to their clients at that rate? As a credentialed teacher who just signed up for Preply I'm shocked. I put my minimum hourly on the site as sixty-five per hour and that is cheap for someone with an advanced degree. I suppose I won't be getting clients at that rate. Wish I would have watched your video before I took the hour and a half it took to sign up. Thanks for this video!
Hi i took inspiration from your video and also recorded a video on youtube to share my experience of having taught via preply for 3 years. Hopefully this content might be helpful for some going on with their tutor journey.
My account on preply just got approved and it's live so we'll see how it goes. Engoo/DMM is drying up big time so I'm looking for preply to replace it. Cambly right now is the major one in my income.
Whenever I am trying to make my account at preply, a popup notification appears and says that my internet connection is poop. I am using this same network for my other works . Is there any solution to this problem?
Do you recommend it? I'm thinking about tutoring and haven't started yet. I'm a homemaker and I homeschool my 10 year old daughter. I have time during the day and some evenings that I could use to add a bit of household income.
Thanks for the video, I was unsure about this company because I wasn’t sure if I could make it a full time job but it seems like with some work I could. Thank you.
I'm a homemaker and also homeschool my 10 year old. I would definitely have time throughout the day to tutor. Do you recommend Preply for a person like me who just wants to supplement my husband's excellent income?
I have had the best long term success on amazon merch and redbubble. I have had consistent but slow sales on Udemy but really wouldn't recommend that unless you like being on camera.

for me if i pay $ 10 an hour for a class it's too expensive i can't afford that
i'm from Egypt though
So true. As a South African $10 is a lot of money. So if I did 5 classes a day i would almost earn 3 to 4 times above the minimum wage in my country
that alone in Egypt is a lot, I get 75LE per hour here as an ESL teacher. I could work and join Preply full time.
True

Italki has lower commissions ;-)

Same. I plan to start at $10/hr

@@MerchMetrics thank you a lot, if you come back one day in the Preply maybe I could try to take some lessons with you ^^
@@MerchMetrics merci ! :)

Preply is for teachers in countries where expenses are very low (SE Asia, Africa, etc) or else for "tutors" who are 18 years old living with parents.
At nine bucks an hour he's selling himself short. You can easily charge more and get lots of clients. He's in American wage slave mode.
You can bless me with that account sir, I will charge like 20 to do that. I am a maths and chemistry teacher. I have a degree in the same.

Thanks for your input, bro
The whole 1 hour unpaid trail class thing needs to go.
Yeah it’s shady at best
Yeah 1 hour is a lot.

so, how is it?
How was/is it??
How are you doing with your account? Is it worth it for you?
Hello can you help. I got rejected and i got no clear reason
Help me tell me how I want to re-upload the video to my account
Preply is the WORST platform. I got so frustrated with them that I made a video about it yesterday.
Good stuff, seems like it's not for me. I have video production tips for you; maybe able to increase retention.
sir g plz tell us about other platform which pay good?
I tried signing up but it said that I can only charge $9 an hour. Why is that?
That’s new, they also require a teaching credential depending on where you live.
Do they give you material to do the class? Or we have to provide books or worksheets?
It’s usually a 1 on 1 video lesson and you are responsible for any materials you want to teach.
I have a question: The classes are 1 hour, however, if they schedule 1 and 1/2 hours for one session do you get paid for the extra minutes?
Yeah for sure if they schedule a longer time you get paid for all of it. Timer starts from the time they join the call until you end it.
@@MerchMetrics : Thanks for your reply. Have you ever had a student record the class and ask you to post it on TH-cam?
@@VisyVisyTV no and I would definitely not do that ;) I’m pretty sure it would be against the terms of use for preply
@@MerchMetrics : I never knew that they could record the class. I was surprised that he did record it and was asking to post it he said for practice.
@@MerchMetrics Wrong - there's no timer. Lesson are paid according to the booked duration, not when the student joins. It's not cambly (thank God)
Sir any other platform that pay good?

That same thing happened to me! Repeating a few times it finally went through but it must be on their end.
You replied so fast. I didn't expect this!
I really appreciate your reply.
Thanks dude.
i have been tutoring for about a year now. I am still a student though

I think you could tutor but preply isn’t probably the best platform, the do not respect your time at all.
@@MerchMetrics sorry but couldn't you just pick your available schedule?

This platform is the devil,
Damn right.
