I went to Madeira a few years ago. The Island is incredible. Despite being quite fluent in Brazilian Portuguese, I couldn't manage to really understand the natives. Their accent is even stronger than in mainland Portugal. The people are very nice.
My fiancé's parents are from Madeira. And there accent is strong. However the accent from the Azzores is even stronger and Madeirans have a hard time listening to them 😅 Side note. . . . Madeira is a stunning Island and I LOVE MICHICO xxxxx

Actually, Madeiran dialect is divided in two variants (north coast and south coast). The one we could listen in the video is the south coast variant. (The one that is most understandable to standard portuguese speakers). Madeira may seem small, but it is a very diverse place.

He said that he worked on fixing his accent to sound more "modern" Portuguese so they would stop making fun of him. I wonder since his super star status, does he still speak Madeirense in formal interviews or talkshows? Or does he speak "standard" European Portuguese? For the TV he speaks standard portuguese. Unfortunately many Madeirans don't value their dialect like Europeans do because our parents and grandparents were teached in school that madeiran dialect is an illiterate way of speaking. That prejudice still continues living in our society. It is the dictatorship heritage that still lives among us.

There are very few speakers of Mirandese, so it is unlikely there is any volunteer for it. (Mirandese is a variety of Asturleonese spoken in Miranda do Douro (Portugal), for those who didn't know it).

The Asturleonese (Asturian + Leonese) is also in danger of extinction (80,000 primary speakers plus 200,000 secondary speakers) but far from the Miranda do Douro variety, with only 5,000 primary speakers and maybe 15,000 secondary speakers. I'm Brazilian and, honestly... if I look away from the subtitles while listening this dialect it almost doesn't even sound like Portuguese, it sounds like French or a foreign language most of the time. That is because their pronunciation is a lot different from the written language. The vocabulary section (about nouns, names of objects) for instance look completely foreign to me 1:58, except for the word 'family', all the words are different from Brazilian Portuguese.
