An Indonesian here. It’s really interesting to know that PT-PT pronounces “Portugal” with the letter L and BR-PT pronounces it as “Portugao”. My first tiny exposure to BR-PT was from the comic “Mônica” (Indonesian: Monika) that I often read in my childhood 😊

Ronaldo is from Madeira. Their accent is not the same as São Miguel, which has the hardest accent of all island regions. When people refer to the islands and an accent being almost unintelligable, they are talking about the Micaelense accent. I learned the hard way from a very young age, as when I was speaking with my family I never had any issues. The minute I spoke to other Portuguese people they look at me like I'm an alien.

    • @AnaMaria-df6tg
      @AnaMaria-df6tg 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I’m Canadian born to immigrants from Azores, Portugal. I’m married to a Brazilian. When I speak Azorean Portuguese to my wife and mother in law, they understand me fine and I understand them too. Don’t understand why some struggle to understand the same language just because of a different accent. I have friends from Angola, main land Portugal and Brazil. I understand them and they understand me. And, I don’t arrogantly think I speak better than they do and make fun of the way they speak. Also, I speak Canadian English. Have no problem understanding Scottish English, Irish English, Australian English and even American English with all its various accents. Accents don’t change the language. It’s just a slightly different pronunciation. If we listen carefully and put things into context, understanding the same language with a different accent shouldn’t be that difficult. Stay humble and don’t assume your way of speaking is better than others.

As a person who tried to learn the language, I think Brazilian is easier to understand and to speak, because they pronounce letters as they are written. My favourite example is UNIVERSIDADE:
    Br: U-NI-VER-SI-DA-JI
    Pt: N-VR-SDA

Actually, he said Daniela Ruah and not Melchior, a different Portuguese actress who also had some success in the US.
Unlike what most people might think, there are many accents in Portugal, not just in Brazil. A person from Porto doesn't speak the same way as someone from Alentejo, even if Lisboa and Coimbra accents sound more similar you can tell which one is it in certain details and how they pronounce the letter "e" in words like coelho, vermelho. Even in the North they're not exactly the same, someone from Braga has a slightly different accent from someone from Porto. I'm sure all Portuguese know the Viseu accent (Bijeu xD) that is spoken by people of the Viseu area but not from Viseu itself! The islands' Portuguese are also different, as he mentioned, but it's not like we can't understand them, unless they're from Rabo de Peixe, now that's almost a completely different language that needs subs. I wouldn't say Cristiano Ronaldo has a strong Madeira accent, it's just that his shs are way too strong.

Brazil can have very different accents even inside the same region, so it's not uncommon for people to go visit a nearby city and be like "I can't understand wtf these people are saying".
