Dang, what a tough break for a Gen 1 Raptor. I've got two, one at 35k miles (It's a pavement queen) and one at almost 105k (abused) and nothing more than a busted steering pump on my first outing. They're know to be bullet proof.
I've got a 2010 Raptor SVT last August 2021 and so far so good for me. I'm the 3rd owner. Had to have a spark plug changed out when I first bought it off of the dealership. They did that under their cost. I'm coming up on my second oil change soon. Sounds like somebody really ragged your truck out before you got ahold of it. I hate that happened to you. Mine has 139,000 on it. I don't abuse it, that's my dream truck so I couldn't bring myself to do anything crazy with it. I live in the country so it's basically a drive around the farm, and go to Lowes truck.
Sounds like you're living the dream with your Raptor! I'm currently in Jacksonville.... so no off roading for me ATM, but I am going out of my way to run over curbs and round-a-bouts. :)
For some reason I believe that the stealership made up alot of those issues into something bigger than it should have been. New motor? No way I don't care how it was driven it's extremely rare almost impossible
Wow! Seems like it's rare to have that many issues, but like you said it's a used truck so buyer beware. Thankfully my Raptor doesn't appear to have seen more than half a dozen backroads so I will hope that's a sign of good things.
That’s 100% on you. Had you done your homework. You wouldn’t have had those issues. Not testing if the transfer case is working is like buying a convertible w/o seeing if the motors can retract the roof.
@@TheAllAmericanDriver that makes sense. Even if the truck was meant for off road with these problems may have been prevented if it wasn’t taken off road?
I would love to have known what was actually wrong that required a new motor - as you said the 6.2 is known to be very reliable! It's encouraging to see some of the Super Duty 6.2s break 400k+ miles. But it absolutely sucked that you experienced all of that! Thank God for the extended warranty!
From what I was told it was sever scouring in the cam journals which was leading to oil issues causing the truck to pull timing from the variable valve timing. The previous owner had a turbo on the truck… that might have had something to do with it. 😉
No. I don’t know what I was thinking, it’s like every time I buy a vehicle I make a mistake and overlook something. All I had was the ford oasis report.
I have a 2018 1500 Silverado, and I have had repairs on mine done by the dealership and I have always Second thought what they say they need to do to repair my truck weather it was the transmission, oil pan leak, engine shaking. Regardless of everything I thought it was I ended up getting it repaired by the dealership until my engine started shaking and my engine light started flashing once I tried starting the truck. They said they needed to replace my engine. A total cost of 18,000 plus another 3,000 for the oil pan. A total of 22,000 with taxes. I second thought about it and took it to my local mechanic I was recommended. I ended up paying $700 for 2 burned spark plugs with labor. My truck is running well if not better than ever. I have learned my lesson that the dealership is all about replacing parts, not fixing your vehicle.
Hey Jason, I bought an extended warranty with my 2014 Gen 1 but I’m not sure how to use it. Is it kind of like insurance where I put in a claim? Since I bought my Raptor out of state I’m kind of worried the dealerships in my state won’t honor an extended warranty I didn’t buy from them..
You could talk with your local service department and have them look up the warranty. My dealer that I have used for the repairs was not the same dealer that sold me the warranty. But, it was in the same state, although I don't think that matters much.
Yes that’s my assumption. Basically. The ford service report says the truck had a single turbo, but I don’t know for sure, could have been twins. I’ve never seen a single turbo 6.2.
Probably would have cost you half that amount if you went to an Independent. Also, I bet half of those issue were phantom made up stealership issues as well. A new motor? 🤔
Extended warranties are great if you have a good one. Always negotiate them down. They aren't a fixed cost expense. They have retail and dealer cost rates.
I still have not mastered the negotiation tactics at a dealership... Lots to learn.. But I am good at totally low balling people on facebook marketplace and craigslist.. lol
@@TheAllAmericanDrivernobody wins dealership negotiations, they been in the business for decades they have everything set to make money off you even you go down in price.
New engine at 84K miles? What was the diagnosis that resulted in that decision? I would say either dealer incompetence or an engine that had so many parts that had been upgraded by Ford that replacement was necessary, but Ford would have been stepping up on that or I would torch the vehicle in dealers lot!
There was some major scouring in the cam journals, truck kept pulling timing and throwing codes. From what I can tell from the service history, the previous owner had a big turbo on it.
That intro 🤣🤣🤣. Whether it’s cost of ownership, repairs or mods all of it add’s up quick. I’m scared to see what 2021 will bring mod wise on my Cobra being that I was 10K deep in 4 months of having it in 2020 😆
Yeah I bought a gen 1 with 30k miles back in 2017. I tried using it for a work truck but I’ve been having just to many little things go wrong with it. So far as a daily driver and road trip star it’s been great. But as those miles rack up things will start popping up. When I was using it for work I was putting a minimum of 5,000 miles every month and a half. But yeah I used it for work for 2 years. First year coat $9k in repairs and the second cost $12k in repairs. I didn’t like that trend so I retired the truck. My experience they aren’t the most reliable.
Just cause you don't know how to do your own work bud. Let's be real this is the enthusiasts truck. Iwe is a known factor and can be deleted that was all that was wrong with your 4x4 I'm sure, people for some reason don't realize there are 16 plugs not the 8 on top and change your wires folks sheesh, you have to change your coil boots with pellets every 50k miles or so, nobody seems to check the transmission fluid anymore lol and run rhe proper oil. I've removed and installed including a new transmission at 150k all for under $5k. In other words it isn't your truck it's your unwillingness to get in there and do the labor.
HAHA thats funny about Toyota. That was my experience. I probably should have looked closer at the service records before I bought the truck. Anyways thankfully I had the warranty.

Yeah I just had bad luck with that one! I also lost a powersteering pump. I did the lee power steering one and never had another issue.
I have a 2013 Roush Raptor with 160k... So far I changed the oil, replaced spark plugs and thats it.
How did someone manage to trash a 6.2? Either bad luck or beat the shit out of it and didn’t change the oil. Those motors are tanks
I found out that the previous owner had put twin turbos on it.

Yes, I agree, this does not seem to be the norm. Usually these trucks are bulletproof!
Good video man im thinking of buying a 2013 180k miles
Usually these trucks are bulletproof. Check the service history if possible!
Did you even check and test drive the raptor before you buying the truck?
Or course I drove it! Haha. I didn’t however look at the service history. Lesson learned that’s for sure!

Truth. Every time I buy a car I learn something new.
Do you think any of this would have been avoided if you didn’t take it off-road ?
No, the truck is made to go off road. I think the previous owners modifications (turbo) really destroyed the engine.
