For my poor 33-yr old disabled daughter…Amen! She inherited them from me. Mine stopped at menopause! She has a few years to go before that time and needs help to relieve the pain and nausea. Cheese, chocolate, ice cream and most dairy foods soft drinks were my triggers. But once menopause happened, the headaches stopped!!! And I had an early menopause, fortunately. The headaches stopped as soon as menopause happened! I drink nothing but water now, avoiding any caffeine, since learning they may have triggered the migraines, . I can eat cheeses, dairy foods without any issues now. Worth the wait for menopause! Will try ginger in water on my daughter. We are desperate for help.
My trigger foods are instant noodles( tastemakers containing MSG), cheesy foods, caffeinated products, chocolates. I have entirely eliminated then from my diet . I have one table spoon of ginger juice in the morning as soon as I wake up, followed by 5-6 soaked peeled almonds. This has provided me relief from migraines.
I have suffered with migraines for thirty years. I have been given a whole load of medications with a whole load of side effects. During the past year, I have a migraine every day. I work from home, so I see a client, go to bed, get up for the next client, go to bed again. I was not a fan of excluding any good group, so as last desperate attempt I tried the vegan diet last week. I have not had a migraine since. 😆😆☺Thank you somuch Dr Barnard. This has given me my life back
I have suffered from migraines from 52 years. I have eliminated white foods, dairy, all wheat and sugar. I eat meat fish veg and fruit. They are so greatly reduced. I wish I knew about this years ago
I've had a migraine for 8 days now variates in intensity but it is now both a pre and post menstrual migraine. I also get migraines at other times of the month. My diet consists of both healthy and unhealthy foods and I work 60 hours a week so it's so difficult for me to take the time to take things out of my diet and see what might be causing them. My heart goes out to all of my fellow migraine sufferers... no one is alone in this. This video was very informative and educational on this subject!
@@grapesofthevine1801 you are welcome...you should probably also go get a blood test for low iron levels post period ( when you are having an episode)..this usually causes migraines post period...while low estrogen causes migrains pre period...you may need supplementation for iron based on what a doctor finds.... God bless again!
I'm so glad I'm not alone, I have premenstrual migraines as well, always 10 days before it starts, every month like clockwork. And I'm like you, it's really hard to focus on my diet and whatnot, and even then my family isn't super rich so it can be hard to buy foods most consider healthy. :(
I started keto way of eating and intermittent fasting and went 14 months without a migraine. Longest time since I was 12. Worked for most I’ve talked to as well. Sugar and carbs are biggest triggers
But increasing your risk for other diseases. Crazy how opposed ppl are to doing a well planned wfpb diet but will have rotten corpse on their table thinking it has some magic nutrients and not full of carncinogens.. Makes me proud that i wasn't bought up in such culture around the world where murdering and eating dead body parts of animals is looked at as an option to heal yourself.
A couple years ago, my neurologist suggested an elimination diet (I was getting 15+ per month usually around 2-3pm onset with no relief from medications); I had never considered diet before that, but I found a correlation between meats and migraines when I started the food log, which made sense since I usually ate oats/fruit for breakfast but had chicken for lunch, so my reaction was about 2-3 hours after eating any meat. My neurologist also ordered a CGM, so I started my journey in WFPB diet 18 months ago and I haven't had a single migraine since! I stumbled upon this podcast just looking through YT about 6 months ago, so I hope my story will inspire others with migraine. Unfortunately grains were a big part of my problems, and there's lot of research on migraines and glucose or insulin sensitivity issues.
I’m one of those who started getting migraines with aura very young, at six or seven. Over the years I had increasingly weirder auras. I’ve had vestibular migraine and aphasia during aura as well as loss of feeling on one side, even my teeth will go numb. Since eating whole foods plant based, I rarely have migraines anymore. So grateful for relief that does not involve more medications.

I've been vegan for a month and a half, I haven't had a headache in a day. When I ate meat and dairy I had pain weekly. This is the best change for me, I hate headaches. I can't explain why it doesn't hurt anymore and I didn't expect it .
I’ve got ulcerative colitis- bowel disease. Since going vegan the bloating and chronic abdominal pain have virtually gone now. My husband has had migraine clusters for two snd a half years since getting Covid. I’ve reduced my husband’s meat intake drastically. Looking into anything and everything that might help. The weekly migraines have been life changing.
My migraine was also caused by milk, zero milky products keeps migraine away. BTW I got weird allergy which onsets from 30 min- to 5 days later, sooo hard to find out, because even test shown weird results, but finally I was diagnosed after more than 10 years, but now I am more anaphylactic to milk (casein, lactose,…) rather than only migrenous.
Suffered from migraines for 17 years. Going whole plant based has helped in the last two months. 1) I also increased water intake. 2) Going to bed early. 3) neck exercise. (My neck get so tight when I have migraine) 4) Pumpkin and sunflower seeds help (May be I deplete magnesium quickly)
I eliminated my weekly migraines switching from standard vegan diet to a very low fat whole foods plant based vegan diet and have had maybe one migraine in the last six months!
I have had migraines since I was a teenager. I accidentally found out to take benedryl when I had one because I thought I was allergic to a food I ate. It worked right away by taking away the aching in my head, but of course I must sleep afterwards. The migraine takes a lot of my energy and the benedryl makes me sleepy. It’s the only thing that helps me. I learned a lot from this, thank you!
If Benadryl works for you then you have a histamine issue. I have the same thing so I have reduced histamine foods and histamine releasing foods. If you look up a low histamine diet this will help you so much. You have to give up a lot of foods but so worth it to be rid of these debilitating migraines.
@@precocioussceptic4967 I have histamine issues too and the weird thing I have found is that the vast majority of animal products are high histamine but so many people with histamine issues include them anyway. For the most part, my histamine issues are solved just by being plant based. So I think the protocol Dr. Barnard is recommending could still work, even if it's a histamine thing
@@precocioussceptic4967I have been doctoring for migraines for 30 years, I am 45 yrs old. I’ve seen a couple dozen docs and not once has anyone told me I have a histamine issue. I always tell them how Benadryl helps me. This is a huge eye opener for me. I’ve got chronic debilitating migraines 15+ per month. I eat healthy, no sugar, no processed foods, no dairy, no wheat. So far it hasn’t changed my migraines. I’m going to research histamine issues now. Thank you!!
@@amandaboehm3812 I have 3 different types of migraine. I have head, pain with 1 but pain throughout my whole body with 2. My point is migraine is not a headache
Well yes migraones can have lots of symptoms but I will take those over pain any day. I usually have all symtoms and pain that can last up to 9 days. And yes a headache isn't a migraine . But headaches suck too . Any pain in head isn't fun at all. I wish I had no pain
I used to take that as well but switching to a WFPB diet helped greatly. Eggs and dairy are my biggest trigger foods because when I was only vegetarian and still ate those 2 categories I suffered. Give it a try!
Thank you Dr. Barnard for your useful information and important research. I didn’t have any specific food allergies but a whole food plant based diet cut my migraines down 75%. and has been life changing. My migraines always were associated with nausea and/or vomiting. I am glad you made the distinction with a tension headache. I think anyone with migraines needs to exam their food choices and diet. The brain and gut are connected
Just got diagnosed with migraines after a terrible experience thinking I had a stroke (with only 27 years old..) But apparently all my symptoms are migraine related.. Now I try to avoid triggers, so thank you for this great content. Just in time for me 👍🏻
Were you diagnosed with hemiplegic migraines? My 20 yo daughter was taken to the ER yesterday and given a CT scan and MRI to rule out stroke due to tingling and numbness moving through one side of her body, slurred speech, not finding words, vomiting, intense migraine pain. So now we are trying to figure out where to go from here
@@ginac7235 I'm sorry to hear she had to go through that yesterday.. But yeah that's exactly what I had too.. I was also rushed to the ER with the ambulance.. My whole right side was numb and I couldn't speek for a few minutes but by the time I was in hospital I was fine, just had very bad headaches.. After that I had a months of daily headaches and now I am almost back to normal. All the best for your daughter 💜
@@ginac7235 i was diagnosed with hemiplegic migraine whenI was 12. The day after an attack im like functioning at 30%. I cant remember words, people think im drunk. Its single most debilitating thing in my life. Ive cried, screamed, even self harmed during an attack. Its so frustrating when people think its a bad headache. Its the worst feeling ive ever experienced. At my worst I was getting them several times a week, now I get them once or twice a month. If it happens I am out of action for 6-8 hours + barely functional the following day.
Dear perimenopause women with migraines. In our case it's almost always estrogen dominance and temporary histamine intollerance as direct culprits. I'm almost 24hrs into migraine and it's also my second day of period which I got on 14th day of the cycle. Since I sometimes have no migraines for a few months and then have them monthly or even more frequently I realised there are a few main triggers that are not food related that initiate domino effect we later pin on foods we ate. These are stress, high cortisol and insomnia. If I get lots of these, I know I'm done regardless of what I eat. It's cliche, I know, but stress is a silent killer indeed. I wish my migraines lasted a day but they're usually 2 sometimes 3 day long. On the second day you don't want to live any more.
I’ve been suffering from migraines also with my period and I tell you , you don’t want to live anymore after a few days. It is excruciating. BUT there is also evidence to suggest that anaemia is a cause of migraine and women who are anaemic and then get a period are even more prone to trigger a migraine. This is info that I’ve received recently and I got tested as extremely anaemic. In this case you need protein and vegan won’t do. Also an iron supplement. Something so simple.
@@leaniemeintjesit turned out I was anemic, too, for the first time in my life, and after 7 months on a vegan diet. I love plant based eating but I had to include some animal foods I had almost zero ferritin, too, which was really scary. As a vegan I ate a variety of foods, each and every day lots of kale (I hate spinach) and other greens, and yet I was extremely depleted. My TSH went from 1.9 to 2.6 in just 7 months (all my life I was around 2 and not more than 2) and my skin started to get very dry especially on my elbows and knees; I was simply losing nutrients even though I ate A LOT and a variety of plant based products (clean, no junk). After a month of eating back SOME animal products (meat twice a week) my iron is back to normal and my TSH is very slowly changing, too. Ferritin is still where it was, i.e. close to zero, but I'm glad my body reacted to meat and my iron is now within normal range. I hope it will help with migraines as I went from 1 then 3 to 6 days with migraine per month and I seriously wanted to die. Oh, I did take B12 religiously I was very disciplined so I don't know what caused such depletion within just 7 months. Thank you for your very important comment!
This is exactly what happens to me. I can't even drink water or have anything to eat and it's non stop nausea with crippling pain... For up to 60 hrs 😢
I can 100% relate! Mine are also hormone related. My hormones are normal but were brought on to from the natural hormone changes mid 30's. Estrogen drops faster same with progesterone rising I believe. Since I have migraine with aura, birth control is not an option to help. Mine started in 2020 and couldn't get a tela visit mid to late 2020 causing my migranes to go into chronification. Once that happens it's really hard to go back migraine free. I have them all month long but the worst leading up to my cycle, during and the week after😭 I have Emgality to try and praying this helps! Told my nuero im at a fork in the road for something that helps or major counseling for depression. Tired of being in pain and sleeping my life away. Sorry to vent, just wanted to share my story and I appreciate you sharing yours. So sorry you suffer. I'm doing so much research of my own on hormones!
@@leannabedore yeah after twenty years and then becoming more frequent and intense ... And I mean... Debilitating to such a severe point... I honestly can't handle it anymore. I have a chronic daily but manageable migraine but will have the debilitating ones the day before menses and the first day of ovulation. Than on top of it I have suboccipital / cervicogenic migraines from neck issues. I wouldn't wish migraine on the devil.
Since I didn't see anyone summarize the video: 1) For at least a month/4 weeks eliminate all animal products. I.e. dairy, meat, eggs 2) If you still have migraines eliminate these dozen foods: dairy, chocolate, citrus, eggs, meat, nuts, tomatoes, onions, corn, apples, and bananas 3) Take all those foods out in addition to being vegan, now bring in foods one at a time. Have 4 or 5 of that food in a day. If that food doesn't trigger a migraine then it's safe. Do this again and again, one food every 2 days in a generous quantity 4) If you get a migraine take that food out and move onto the next one 5) Avoid consuming caffeine every day Personally I Know that nuts and bananas are BIG triggers for me. So is raspberries, deli meat, and food dyes
Thank you for the summary. I will try to work through it. I've been having migraines for the Last 2 years now. Twice I have had to take a week off from work. I just got another that started yesterday at 5pm only now atl day later has it started to subside. It could be a combination of broken sleep and one of the foods.
I suffer from chronic migraines and have been a vegan now for four years. I have been cutting foods and drinks out and so far no relief. I will try and cook all my fruits and vegetables now and see how that helps
I have been taking a natural supplement called 5-HTP which boosts serotonin in the brain. I have found this to provide relief from the chronic daily migraines I have been experiencing for several years.
Overexertion! I have that too. I went to the gym after long period not going due to covid lockdown and it was tired every week when I went to the gym. Then the 4th time on 4th week, I was down with severe migraine and knock me out for almost a week.
Wow...right on point...I have suffered migraines for over 20 years and I have been practicing the elimination system for over 2 years. It's the best. Smart caffeine use is important, get to know what your body and brain like. My migraines used to last up to 2 weeks, constant E.R visits and IV's for pain relief. Thank God no more of that. Eat right, Drink plenty of water daily for happy brain muscles and sleep the same amount of hours. To me that has worked miracles.
God had it from age 15. At 37 I embarked on organic no cheese no bread no tomato wine etc. At the same time installed a good water filter in the house. I also embarked on yoga and two massages a month. They went. Now with economic struggle my organic choices are narrowing and migraines are making a come back.
My husband got covid two and a half years ago. Never had a migraine before that. When the fever started the migraine kicked in. He’s been having migraines every week since then. Or splitting headache. Sometimes has migraine that last over a week. Leave him in a terrible state. Sick, exhausted and very low. Not having much support in the UK. We’re desperate to find something that works. Eliminated tea/coffee/alcohol, up the exercise. Tried beta blockers. Had e ray, MRI. Been to an ear nose and throat specialist and neurologist. Starting a different beta blocker as first one made no difference. It’s been utterly and completely life changing.
That's why I'm here. Covid resulted in new, frequent migraines. Left side. Same happened for my partner yet for him it started after his shots. For me, it started after the infection itself. Very weather driven. Rain coming guarantees a bad one. Trying to eradicate food triggers.
My migraines also became a chronic, almost daily problem after Covid. I’ve been advised to use augmented NAC to eliminate the spike protein from my system. Your husband may want to try that too. And look up mast cell activation disorder (it’s long Covid essentially).
I have Suicidal Cluster Migraines, 24/7 since the age of 18. I am 47 now. I have been to doctors, Neurologist, Neurosurgeon, ENT, Dentist, etc and nobody can help me. I have spent so much money on trying to fix it, but just keep on killing myself, with soooo many different pain killer, each day. I drink allot of them each day. I feel so sad, because no one alive today, can understand the intense non-stop pain I have😢
Try Dr. Barnard 's advice before being swayed by any random commenter such as me! But as a lifelong sufferer, vulnerable to an elusive combination of trigger foods, stress and lifestyle patterns, I finally decided to try a healthy keto diet, and have felt immune to migraine ever since. And there's a good theoretical basis as to why ketones should be protective. Migraine, also known as 'slow epilepsy' is a seizure disorder associated with depressed energy metabolism in the brain, during an attack. Regularizing blood sugar by cutting carbs, and boosting ketones as the alternative fuel source appears to keep the brain functioning much more reliably - even if you skip a meal or have a longer fast. Dr. Barnard has his patients identify and eliminate trigger foods, while also replacing refined foods with a nutrient dense, vegan diet. Excellent advice on every level - and if that eliminates your migraines, stick with it. If not, consider trying a (preferably vegan) keto diet, while informing yourself about the potential risks of increased fat consumption on longterm health.
@Milica Skenderovic, Mag. Pharm.Thank you! Just conscious that my personal experience shouldn't be read as a challenge to a controlled, multi participant study!
Too much fat in even a vegan keto diet.... digestive and inflammatory issues for a lot of people. Your trigger was probably sugar.... so as soon as you stopped eating processed foods you got rid of the processed sugars.
@@annwilliams6438 Yes, your body will tell you if you're overdoing the fat. But as I understand it, not all fats are inflammatory. While omega 6 (found in excess in processed seed oils) promotes inflammation, omega 3 counters it, so it's wise to lean on sources of omega 3 every day. Other fats and oils might be neutral on that score, if I'm not mistaken. Though sugar might have been my migraine trigger, carbohydrates generally kept me wanting to snack, and unable to skip a meal. So, while sacrificing potatoes and wholegrains might not be strictly necessary to avoid migraine, I feel more able to mobilize body fat into energy when I'm not topping up carbs on a regular basis.
Thanks so much Dr. Barnard and Chuck! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!!!! Every month I spend 3 days in bed due to migraines 😭 I eat WFPB diet but still have issues. I'll definitely follow the procedure to find what triggers migraines.
I am, DESPERATELY looking for solutions to solve my finance's endlessly repeatable bouts with pre-menstrual migraines! This looks like a good place to start!!
I did the same thing for my Narcolepsy. And I'm not talking just general sleepiness, but full-on paralysis attacks during the day. I cut out gluten, bananas, apples, mangoes, peaches, and a whole bunch of other fruits and plants like chamomile that triggered it, and I don't get symptoms unless I'm sleep deprived or exposed to a trigger. But I had to cut my diet way down to almost nothing and reintroduce things one at a time to really figure it all out. It took awhile but it was totally worth it! Turns out the things I'm sensitive to all belong to certain plant families, which makes it easier. I've since found a way to go plant-based while still avoiding all the plants that knock me out. Life is so much better now not being disabled all the time. 😃
@@damiettes7140 The apple family, latex (except fresh avocado before they turn brown,) most legumes, most real grains (not faux grains like quinoa,) nuts, seeds, some in the plum family, all daisy family, and a few other miscellaneous items. I am vegan, going thru menopause and I get migraine the friday leading to my cycle. Never fails. I take absolutely nothing, let my body heal it, I go to bed, eat ginger to make the nausea go away, by morning it fades and I am back to normal. Some people would say I suffer but I tell my body how to heal itself. And yes I stay away from MSG.
I am in the midst of a seasonal migraine and am writing this in case it helps others. Oddly for the month of February I was eating vegan and being very conscientious about it. I was eating a lot of citrus. I did start a migraine mid month but noticed at some points during the day it almost seemed gone. On March 1st- I had completed the vegan month and went back to eating cheese- ricotta, pizza, pretty much all of them and milk chocolate. As a vegetarian for years- cheese is a staple for me. Now on March 8th- I have had a pounding disabling headache since March 1st. I take triptans which have done nothing. I'll try giving up dairy tomorrow again. Good luck everyone!
I am surprised that no one has mentioned soy as a trigger. From experience my wife and I know that any tiny bit of soy in anything will almost always give her a headache. It forces you to really read the ingredients lists when you go shopping.
Migraines and tension headaches here. Went gluten free to support a family member and have barely gotten any headaches since. I also went vegetarian and later vegan. It's been years. I do get a bad headache every time I eat gluten. Lasts about 2 days. I have found references to this on patient websites but no clear studies.
If it absolutely cannot be explained otherwise then yes. Exclude excessive light/sunlight, food intolerance and/or gut issues, excessive caffeine intake or caffeine withdrawal symptom. If all of these don't explain it then yes. For me I learned I react to most vegetables due to gut issues once I went plant based. Tricky to find out the exact trigger since the offending food might trigger a migraine up to 72 hours after I ate it! Not sure this is the case for you, but better to keep a diary of what you eat, if cooked /raw, which spices you add, etc. I ain't kidding.... I react to even the smallest amount of spices! Sometimes the smallest stuff might cause the problem and migraine can last 24h at least.
Karen, I also suffer with barometric pressure migraines, as well as several other types of headaches. I've been WFPB food a year, but I consume quite a bit of wheat, tomatoes, onions, apples and bananas. Lots of potential triggers to self experiment with! Best wishes!

hi everyone, i have been suffering from migraine headache for more than 15 years, but today i have learned something that can reduce it, although anything that i know will cause it i do avoid it .Thank you more enlightens on this mother of headache.
I used to get cluster headaches from unregulated high blood pressure. I'd wake up with a pain in the back of my neck and sometimes it would go full blown debilitating, or sometimes it would quickly go away. It wasn't until I. . . 1. Went whole food, low fat, salt-free vegan with McDougall method. 2. got my own home blood pressure monitor and regulated my medication (Clonidine) dose daily to normalize my BP. 3. Quit coffee and tea. It's been almost 5 years now since I've had a headache of any kind! I was drinking coffee and tea while a whole-food vegan and still got headaches. When I finally quit those, zero!
Wow. Were you a heavy coffee drinker? I still get migraines but they seem to be related to pressure changes. I only drink one coffee a day. I wonder if that is the culpret.
@@karennesbitt9655 It could be contributing. If your body is sensitive to caffeine and depends on that one cup a day, it's quite possible that even a small amount will trigger a migraine. It will almost certainly trigger one if you stop drinking that cup cold turkey. If you want to quit, just make it as usual every day but be sure to make the same amount in the same mug at the same strength every day. On the first day, remove one teaspoon of coffee from your mug after you have made it but before you put in milk or whatever. The next day, remove two teaspoons, and so on. You might even need to remain two days on the same 'dose' before you reduce again. (Don't simply add less water each day, as that will make the solution more concentrated. You make it, and only then remove a little.) That way, you should be able to quit it without triggering anything nasty. I'm sure you already know this but black, green (including matcha), white and maté tea also contain forms of caffeine that have the same effect on the body, as do guarana and chocolate, and sodas and foods with added caffeine. Quitting caffeine and dairy products are hands down the best things I ever did to get rid of (or minimise) migraine. If I had to choose one, it would be caffeine. For some people, sugar acts in a similar way. Dark chocolate is also a big migraine trigger for me, as is raw cacao in bar form. The powder doesn't seem to be too bad but I rarely use it - just in the occasional dessert - and would not make a habit of it.
@@Equinox1.5 Thanks. I do enjoy 1 cup of coffee everyday. But I really don't think it is coffee or I would get migraines regularly. They seem to only ocur with a pressure system change. I just wonder what is going on inside me with the pressure change.
@@karennesbitt9655 Barometric pressure is a common migraine trigger (it used to trigger migraine for me - I could tell if it was a heavy day before opening the curtains if my head felt a certain way) but I don't know how it works. This is just me but since I quit caffeine, barometric pressure doesn't bother me anymore and I live in a country where the weather is constantly changing, from one hour to the next sometimes. I still drink coffee but it's a good local decaf filter coffee I found in a deli nearby that is organic and Swiss Water Decaffeinated without chemicals. It tastes just like the real thing. Again, this is just me but in my experience, migraine is like a jigsaw. If certain triggers come together at once, I get an attack. If one is missing, I don't. I think we're all different, though. The pain of migraine - apart from the pain! - is that we each need to work out what triggers it and it seems to be very different for different people. A friend of mine finds her migraine is triggered by light, whereas light doesn't bother me at all unless I am in the throes of an attack. I hope you find a way to ease the barometric attacks. It's a hard one because we can't control the weather. That's why I think 'easing the burden' on the body in other ways (e.g. quitting caffeine and other potentially problematic foods and drinks) might lessen the ability of barometric pressure to trigger an attack.
@@Equinox1.5 Very interesting comment. I will definitely start journaling again and see if I can figure it out. You may be right, the right combinations and boom, migraine. I just haven't pieced it together. Thank you for that.
You need magnesium bisglycinate and electrolytes. I have been a life long migraine sufferer, and that helped TREMENDOUSLY. I basically eat paleo, but adding those things wiped out the migraines for me. Women need 310 mg a day, which you are not getting unless you eat 7 to 10 cups of fruits and veggies a day. The need for potassium is much higher. I believe that's why the electrolytes helped so much. I start every day with electrolytes in my water, then take magnesium bisglycinate, omega 3s, and vitamin d3 with k2 with my first meal of the day.
Not many have mentioned stress and that is what does it for me. Stress build up. Also, if you take alka-Selzter when you feel one coming on it works fantastic. Another trigger for me is red wine. The day after Thanksgiving I had a migraine so bad I thought I was having a stroke. I suspect the Turkey and red wine combo with the stress of prepping the meal. No more red wine and meat for me.
The wine for me. I tried drinking it in college. I thought my head would explode. Never a buzz. Just a pain so powerful I just knew I would need to be hospitalized. Didn't take long to realize fermented foods and drinks are powerful triggers for me.
Fabulous information on headaches, Migraines in particular. Smashing Dr. Barnard! You are one of my true heroes. You truly help millions of both animals and people 👍👏👏❤️
Thank you Dr. Barnard, you gave me hope. I have had 'Hypnic Headache' for about 6 years. I will begin the elimination diet. I will call your office for an appointment if that is possible.
Please do not call migraines a headache; there are many symptoms of having a migraine - loss of vision, vomiting, feeling washed out and often it is accompanied by a pounding pain in the head. And when it is not those other symptoms are still very debilitating so to call it a headache is a misnomer.
I wish I had the Dr being interviewed ...he actually understands. He even understands how people have been denied care at the hospital because of the narcotic eoidemic. This is why i just suffer through 48+ hrs of unreal pain.. the kind where you think youll die.... Migraine meds dont work for me either 😢
Ginger works well for me. the feverfew didnt work for me, took it for 8 months. Different drs. say different things. I was just watching a video about going keto and how it helped people. Its hard to know which way to go.
I wouldn't be able to go anywhere, let alone a hospital, for a drug for my migraines. Thankfully my migraines have been drastically reduced to almost nothing since going plant based. Sugar and being dehydrated being my trigger.
I’ve been mostly vegan for a year now. I’ve had severe migraines frequently since I was 18, and the’ve only come back on days that I’ve had dairy (cheese/butter).
Thank you both for discussing this. Quite an info. I will try plant based completely. But coffee helps in my case. Dr. Barnard was right, caffeine helps. I just pray that this migraines would totally go away since it disrupts our regular routines both at work and at home.
I have migraines almost every day. None of the medication my neurologist have me has helped. I'm already vegan, but the intensity and frequency hasn't changed at all. I'm here to see what else I can do.
I feel for you, girl. I'd been having everyday migraines since March before 2 weeks ago when I cut off spinach and broccoli on top of the list of trigger foods Dr Barnard mentioned. Ah, and avocado, weirdly. Good luck to you 🤞finding your way out.
Damn I eat broccoli and avocado almost everyday. And I have an appointment with the neurologist next week. @Locatwist did they prescribe you injections medication for your migraines?
@@iamfrankcaceres I'm on Candesartan now. If this isn't going to help I will try botox. The injections will be my last resort after that. What are you on?

I have migraines since 37 years every single day excruciating headaches. I was living on terrible painkillers for 35 years. I am now on magnesium citrate.and b2.
I have a constant migraine daily, maybe 3-5 days if I'm lucky migraine free a month. It's hard to see what foods help or don't help having them constantly 😢 But thank you so much for sharing all this wonderful knowledge😊🙏🙏
Here are mine: raw onions and garlic. Cooked are okay. Chocolate. Migraine shows up the next day. MSG. Alcohol, although I can drink a little wine if it’s French. The French must use a different way to process their wine. American wines are the worst. (I’m American.) Citrus, meat, and dairy are fine.
One thing that may affect some people who drink tea, is that some are sensitive to the fluoride in them. I am highly sensitive to fluoride; and green tea, and even hibiscus teas make me very nauseous. I finally zeroed in on that after allowing my dental hygienist to give my teeth a fluoride treatment and stayed very nauseous for about three days.
I came across this video a couple weeks ago and started my vegan diet since. I was diagnosed with migraine aura for almost a year now (after having Covid twice) and it's always associated with vomiting. It's such a debilitating condition. I almost feel alone. I've tried 7 different prescriptions to help it but I would always just end up being tolerant to them. CT Scan shows nothing but I would get 15 + attacks in a month even with prophylaxis medications. My trigger foods are spicy foods, instant noodles, MSG, dairy, cheese, meat, chocolates, wine & processed meats. Now I'm on a different medication and I'm also doing this vegan diet and fortunately, I haven't experienced a migraine attack since just occasional headaches but I'm super happy with the results. If this good response continue on for the next 6 weeks then I won't have to do injections. =) So big thanks to Dr. Neal Barnard and his team and this podcast. God Bless you all!
Good morning. Since 2014 after brain surgery I started getting migraine headaches. This last 6 months I have been transported to local ER for complex migraine headaches and right side weakness. How can I change my diet to stop these headaches?
This was good. I really appreciate this info. I am at my wits end with these migraines and they’re starting to get worse since I turned 40. Im trying so hard not to start taking daily medication to combat it so I’ll be following this diet. I hope this does the trick.
You are so spot on with your discriptions ... i relate mostly with wanting to just sleep it off ... im about 10.5 hours into a migraine right now trying to do research at this point. :(
Last night I had a completely debilitating migraine. The worst I’ve had in my 25 years. I took two Tylenol extra strength and 2 excedrine migraine pills. It took about 45 min to completely kick in and the migraine went away. I will definitely try the ginger next time. But excedrine is really a miracle medication for migraines! So if anyone sees this and deals with migraines, please buy that
I can't agree more, Excedrin Migraine pills is the only medication that works for me and I've tried many (even over the counter medication) in the last 20 years!
Please take care. I used to heavily rely on Excedrin for migraines but developed gastric ulcers due to the aspirin it contains. Always make sure to line your stomach with food prior.
I took excedrin some time ago and I started to feel more headaches and like nervous, also pain in my fingers , although it looks that I had body inflammation before and that medicine worst It
Apparently I used to get migraines and didn't know it. I would see the auras and one of my eyes would hurt and I would often cover that eye. I also felt sick to my stomach but my head never hurt so I didn't know it was a migraine. I thought I was having a problem with my eye. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've had one of those since going vegan.
I'm on day 3 of this migraine. No sickness this time but I have slept and still no relief. I know my diet is trash. I need to change because I can take this
I've had headaches in the past my doctor would give me a shot it would go away, done. On April 17th i woke up with a migraine that i still have today. CT scans tons of meds ER twice in tears begging for relief. I'm willing to try anything that doesn't require a ton of meds with a ton of side effects.
See how different we are. I did a carnivore diet for 9 months nearly 10, and it cut my migraines down 90%. Then I moved on to a keto diet and started to notice my migraines coming back. I also note that having a low-carb diet was the best. I also do Homemade electrolytes every day.
I was one of those kids. I've been getting migranes since I can remember. I always get aura and when I was younger, I would throw up almost every time. Now that I'm older, I still get them but depending on how bad the aura is, I can kind of tell on how much pain it will be. I get them when I'm out at work and will pull over a sleep for a few hours. I've had others tell me that there's an uneasiness even before the aura but I can't call it. I really feel like mine stset with light. Sometimes lights start bothering me and feel like they can trigger them. Like street lights ar night. I don't eat meat and have cut out a bunch of triggers but still get them. Thank God they aren't as bad as they were when I was younger. Not sure how I could deal with that now
Almost same thing for me. However,I feel like I'm detached from the world when I get the migraine and long ago I thought I'm the only one and people think that I'm exaggerating.. But seriously, this migraine is causing me so many problems in day to day life and yeaah, I feel like I've developed a serious sensitivity to lights comparing to when I first had it as a kid.
I had migraines for 20 years before I figured out what it was. I gave up peanut butter and I never had another migraine again. No peanuts and no almonds for me

Broccoli is great for CoQ10 which is thought to help with migraines. Migraines with aura may be due to PFO (look it up) which affects the heart. CoQ10 is good for the heart. I get migraines with aura and started eating a load of broccoli out of just strange pregnancy like cravings (I'm not pregnant). My migraines have improved, and I've seen other changes as well
This was so helpful. I sent my daughter the information and also purchased Feverfew for her to try out at least until she choses to eat healthy. Only sadness is that you do not have licensed teleweb doctors available in Oregon so I can have a consult. I am 63 and just went whole food plant based lifestyle about 3 weeks ago and have a few questions. One question was answered on the live stream this morning about my keto daughter giving me heck about it because her concern about my eating higher carbs as a uterine cancer survivor.

Wow I hope this helps me

If Benadryl works for you then you have a histamine issue. I have the same thing so I have reduced histamine foods and histamine releasing foods.

Since I didn't see anyone summarize the video:
1) For at least a month/4 weeks eliminate all animal products. I.e. dairy, meat, eggs
2) If you still have migraines eliminate these dozen foods:
dairy, chocolate, citrus, eggs, meat, nuts, tomatoes, onions, corn, apples, and bananas
3) Take all those foods out in addition to being vegan, now bring in foods one at a time. Have 4 or 5 of that food in a day. If that food doesn't trigger a migraine then it's safe. Do this again and again, one food every 2 days in a generous quantity
4) If you get a migraine take that food out and move onto the next one
5) Avoid consuming caffeine every day
Personally I Know that nuts and bananas are BIG triggers for me. So is raspberries, deli meat, and food dyes
Thank you so much

How has the journey gone so far?
I have been taking a natural supplement called 5-HTP which boosts serotonin in the brain. I have found this to provide relief from the chronic daily migraines I have been experiencing for several years.
Chocolate is a very common trigger, as well over overexertion. Everyone seems to have different triggers. I've suffered from them for many years.
Really? Did you have to change your diet? Could you share a little bit about coffee use?
God had it from age 15. At 37 I embarked on organic no cheese no bread no tomato wine etc. At the same time installed a good water filter in the house. I also embarked on yoga and two massages a month. They went. Now with economic struggle my organic choices are narrowing and migraines are making a come back.

Strong winds is an indicator of changes in the atmospheric pressure. Some of us are sensitive to it.

I'm so curious about the carb thing. What is it about it that needed to be cut in many cases while it is surely on table every meal of many cultures?
Any feedback ..?
They might be hormonal. Neck related, sinus, not only food related.
@m0L3ify what plant family are you allergic to?
@@damiettes7140 The apple family, latex (except fresh avocado before they turn brown,) most legumes, most real grains (not faux grains like quinoa,) nuts, seeds, some in the plum family, all daisy family, and a few other miscellaneous items. Also gluten because I'm Celiac. I'm sure there's a few I forgot there, but that's the gist of it. Bananas, apples, peanuts, and gluten are the worst for me. Basically: mostly everything that's popular. But I'm still plant-based! Four years and counting. :)
@@m0L3ify I have a lot of issues with grains and legumes too! If you don't mind my asking, what do you eat? I can eat beans if I cook them in a certain way, and I've been pretty heavily reliant on potatoes

Maybe I am going through peri menopause I have the same symptoms
Must be estrogen dominance in her case I suppose just as it is in mine.
He mentioned MSG and soy sauce has MSG.
What about barametric pressure migraines. I seem to get them every time we have a low. Would love your thoughts on that.
I'm the same
If it absolutely cannot be explained otherwise then yes.
Me tooo just tday . ..I stay with fruit morning til 11anyway if I can ..def no dairy n wheat n meat and walk in nature
Karen, I also suffer with barometric pressure migraines, as well as several other types of headaches. I just bought these to try: www.weatherx.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwyZmEBhCpARIsALIzmnIqBVfPrqyM9sgayp9Tkh4XOTGk03d8NcatW4qHXmIO-3vTQ9c2AjgaAl89EALw_wcB
I am hoping they help, but I'm also going to look at foods. I've been WFPB food a year, but I consume quite a bit of wheat, tomatoes, onions, apples and bananas. Lots of potential triggers to self experiment with! Best wishes!
You are probably more likely to have problem with air pressure drops if you have a lot of chronic inflammation. Figure out what triggers inflammation for you.
My migraine was gone after I started taking vitamin B2 supplements . Please try it. I suffered many years . No doctors told that this can be the cause. Accidently I found this while I was browsing some others supplements . Thank god🙏
hi everyone, i have been suffering from migraine headache for more than 15 years, but today i have learned something that can reduce it, although anything that i know will cause it i do avoid it .Thank you more enlightens on this mother of headache.
Thank god for Neil Barnard. Bringing clarity to a world of chaos.
Last year Sep I had half a glass of red wine. The next day I had a migraine from the depths of hell. I haven't had a sip of wine ever since.
The wine for me. I tried drinking it in college. I thought my head would explode. Never a buzz. Just a pain so powerful I just knew I would need to be hospitalized. Didn't take long to realize fermented foods and drinks are powerful triggers for me.
I tried this and nothing changed. Thanks thou.
This was so good. I'm going to try plant based diet from tomorrow. I had cut everything else out. Thank you
Chuck you look great. Loved the show. Thanks to you and Dr.Barnard. When giving up coffee anything help migraines besides tapering down?
Ginger!
Oh my God! It's varies with different people. It is sugar to you, and salt to somebody else.
I’m sooo happy for you

I have a constant migraine daily, maybe 3-5 days if I'm lucky migraine free a month. It's hard to see what foods help or don't help having them constantly 😢
But thank you so much for sharing all this wonderful knowledge😊🙏🙏
Here are mine: raw onions and garlic. Cooked are okay. Chocolate. Migraine shows up the next day. MSG. Alcohol, although I can drink a little wine if it’s French. The French must use a different way to process their wine. American wines are the worst. (I’m American.) Citrus, meat, and dairy are fine.
Maybe it depends if a wine is bio, without sulphates?
Its not the preservatives in the wine. Look up the fining process and they use egg and fish products in this. You need vegan wine
My tooth is bothering me and when I eat or drink anything, it triggers pain, leading to neck pain and a headache/migraine.
I have not had any meat for 12 years. I do eat eggs and some fish. Now this is an open eyes for me.
So true my pain has been dismissed in emergency rooms all the time
One thing that may affect some people who drink tea, is that some are sensitive to the fluoride in them.
