I got the NIWA Lunokhod, which uses VFD tubes rather than Nixie tubes. It is significantly smaller and more wearable and is a visually stunning novelty watch. If you want a Nixie tube timepiece, I'd recommend their tabletop clock. But be forewarned. NIWA is a small operation. It took almost a year for my watch to be delivered, and customer communication is not their strong suit. But the price is ridiculously reasonable, and if you want to have a conversation starter on your wrist, this is it.
Andrew, I actually appreciated your deep dive, and science basics behind the Nixie tube. This coupled your love of watches and your SciFi writing skills together. Keep up the good work!

May be I missed it but how do you actually tell time on this thing. The video only shows it counting up one second at a time. When/how does it show hours and minutes?
Just by setting it to show hours and minutes. It was set to show the seconds for the cinema it makes.
@@stupidocanerosaYeah but there are only two tubes. So unless the second tube stacks two digits one atop the other I cannot imagine how it works. It was a mistake not to show that in the video.
@@stuffhappens5681 Oh no, it was shown. It displays alternatively hours and minutes.
Like you saw the seconds passing but one second is the hour and the next second are the minutes.

I put it in order, and 10 months later, still no feedback, no order reply, and I told them I needed my down money back.
Write to them. I found 3 emails from niwa in a spam folder. Received mine 2 weeks ago.

I have this model watch in purple titanium and only wore it once it is a very cool and unique watch, but the size is gigantic and setting it with a magnet doesn't helps.The watch looks like a power ranger toy if you have a small wrist like myself.

On the wrist it may be as practical as a bow without an arrow but I kind of love it, no, admire it, Back in the 80's I used test kit with these little Nixie tubes and I found them fascinating back then, I don't think I've seen one in 3 decades. Very well explained in your usual entertaining way that somehow makes some sort of sense so someone and maybe even me. Keep up the great work Andrew.

I have the smaller NIWA watch with the meteorite back and it is a wonderful watch. Battery does not last long as I am always looking at it! Not the best for telling time, it is accurate however need to figure out what tube lights up in the row of tubes. Great for conversation starters and keeping me distracted during meetings!! Great video!!

I've got a Niwa Lunokhod which is a bit more... challenging to read. But it's a lot of fun, and is at least a wearable size.

Looks like when you rotate it toward you, it flashes hour, minutes, and seconds in sequence.
Battery probably doesn't last long enough to show either 😂😂😂

I got a NIWA, bought in 2001, wear it most days, very happy. Also the NIWA unlike other Nixie watches doesn't try to look like a prop from Fallout

I've built a couple Nixie clocks a few years ago, recently out of curiosity I priced the tubes I used in my largest clock, at $200 a tube, good grief!
You should have explained how to read the time.
I enjoyed the science digression, but I've spent far too much time on thinking about whether the oxygen wouldn't be _reduced_ rather than oxidized. Because its oxidation state would usually change from 0 to -2. But then again, I can't remember all details from my studies about photochemistry which is a whole different beast. Just not sure if that would play a role or if I am overthinking. I guess I still haven't thought about it enough. Cheers.
Tubes/valves are so sick to look at in operation. A delightful vestige, and reminder of of the past and the routes we had to take technologically to get to where we are now. I’m a guitarist so I have a certain reverence and affinity for them. I always wanted a tube clock, but I’ve always been worried about maintenance. I’ve had tubes crack from the difference in humidity from one room to the other, so to have a nixie tube wrist watch would stress me

I built a Nixie tube clock from a kit, was brilliant. Looked great on my bar. Spilling liquid on one is not recommended…
They should make this into a clock!
Not that black looks bad on you but you should try different colors, try lighter ones for instance
