    Hi Andrew, great post.
Been away for while so thanks for reminding me why your channel is a must!
    Some comments:
Regards Stern purchase of Patek: as they were the dial makers, I assume Stern was owed some money (perhaps a lot) when PP was in trouble. Best way to avoid the liquidatior is to keep the watchmaker selling/in business.
Your comment: “Flappy Ears!’ re the Nautilus. I was asked by an auction house expert why I was not bidding on a PP Nautilus & I answered: “The design is ugly 1970’s”.
As he was a wonderfully Swiss person who understood humour & irony to the degree of a depth gauge…it was our last direct communication.

Hang on a minute, doesn't Cartier lay claim to laying the blueprint for the modern wristwatch by designing the Santos in 1904? And then the Tank in 1917?
The Calatrava has become the archetype for a very, very specific type of watch, but "the modern wrist watch" was born in the trenches of WWI, the Boer war and in aviation. Again: Patek was an also ran in that space.

I don't know if the histories themselves are so disappointing. I think it's fantastic that these brands (and others, such as Breguet) were either pulled back from the brink of their various crises or created at all. In many ways, these brands are better today than they ever were, making unique, in-house movements, and raising the standards for finishing and design.
That said, I feel like the big three (PP, VC, AP) plus Rolex and Omega are resting on their laurels a bit, and I don't find many of their designs interesting. I'd much rather be wearing a Lange, Glashutte, or Breguet. However, I get it - Gibson has to keep producing variants of the Les Paul guitar or their fans (buyers!) revolt, so the big three probably need to do the same! As long as they can sell every watch they make, it's good business.

I have always felt that Patek watches are boring. In their design. Way too conservative. It’s outrageous how the 5711 with the Tiffany blue dial is now going for around $2.8 million! All because of that young (foolish) young Chinese guy buying the first one in Hong Kong for $6 million! Insane. They originally went for $57,000! Hype. The sellers love it. Of course. To then brag there are only 170 of them made. I personally love Panerai watches. Always have. Love the Due. Not as thick as the older models but still nice. Better to wear if you wear it with a dress shirt.

I have had three Nautilus (maybe the plural should be Nautili) in the 1990s. Starting with the 3800/1JA bi-metal. I paid 3,000 pounds to a guy in the Portobello Rd London market who was a jeweller. I opened the case and found the movement 335SC to be very plain and similar to a Federic Piquet for JLC. The dial was gold and was rather nice. In 1995 I acquired a new 3711 from a dealer in Hatton Garden with boxes and papers. That I believe had a 315SC movement and in 2000 and paid 5000 pounds for it. I obtained a gold Nautilus in February 2000 with a Diamond bezel that Patek put on with an Extract from Archives from PP themselves. I forgot how much I paid for it! I also acquired an Aquanaut - what a POS that was! The movement in the AP Royal Oak is much better. Disappointment watches; Some IWCs with ETA Valjoux movement and maybe the same could be said for Panerai that were not COSCs. There have some others I can't remember off the top of my head. I have exchanged my Nautilii and looking at the asking prices of them, I wish I had not!

I love Speedmasters and not only the true "moonwatches", they are great and near perfect, but 50m (or sometimes100m) rating makes them useless in everyday life. Well not exactly useless, but you need to be careful not to make them wet.
Now sure... I understand that every self-respecting men has a collection of watches and they wear at least Submariner to the beach (or G-Shock)... but if you not so self-respecting or maybe not a men.... and you had stupid idea of having just one watch... and it happened to be Speedmaster then you will be struggling forever when on holiday.
Sure it is great going to office, or sitting at home, or driving somewhere in the car, or sitting anywhere indoor protected from the elements it's fine, but if you ever decide to go on holidays then you will have slight issue - should you leave it in hotel room, car glove box, maybe in the sock, in the shoe, which is then hidden in your backpack under the towel on the beach, should you ask you girlfriend to then sit on the towel as well when you go for a swim and only go to swim after you come back?! Maybe you shouldn't take Speedmaster on holidays at all?!
All those issues is something that luxury watch owner, especially tool/sports watch like Speedmaster should not worry about. And trust me - it is very disappointing to get your watch wet... at least Omega warranty doesn't make big deal out of it. Anyway - for watch as iconic as Speedmaster you want to wear it everyday and everywhere, but sadly on earth the water resistance matters and Speedmaster does not have it. Real shame.

Very valid points. I like the 'where to hide it' you mentioned. Good watch, but really it does need a higher WR rating. However, holiday watches = Hamilton, Seiko or G-Shock surely.

Weird title. You don't really say what is "disappointing" about the Reverso other than that reversing it is a let down for you - sorry but that's a pretty lame complaint and it sounded like an afterthought. And I suspect you are alone in thinking this. the fact that it reverses at all is the exciting thing. You say nothing disappointing about the Calatrava at all that I could find - it is clearly a classic (and which I would argue is (or can be depending on the model) the perfect round gold wrist watch). I'm with you on the Nautilus and the Daytona - I'm mystified why they have such cachet - very disappointing watches in person and conceptually uninteresting. As for the IWC being boring, that was the bloody point - it was meant to be entirely functional. next you will be criticising water for being wet.

Royal Oaks have 50m water resitance and the crews are just for show. These are not sturdy or robust, not even compared to a nautilus.
And learn to pronounce Jaeger-LeCoultre or stick to the acronym.

The videos are OK but you need to polish up your personal appearance. It's off-putting to have to sit through a video where the presented has assumed the countenance of one who lives in a landfill. You videos were better when they were just voice and watch. I'm not trolling you. The grubby look just isn't appropriate for one who wants to be taken seriously. It might appeal to a few, but a professional should put their best foot forward, hygiene wise.
