Take basic auto electrical in school. Learn about AC/DC and diodes how electric motors solenoid,s safety and switches generators and relays actually work.
After 40 years of wrenching I still find so many mechanics young and old who don't understand electric theory and practice.Start with test light master that then learn a ohm DOV meter.. learn to read electrical schematic diagrams you will get a good job!!!!!.Excellent Show!

  • @jsteins

In general, good job of showing the details... but watch that you get the Spark plug wire in the correct place, when putting the engine cover back on. Taryl leaves this wire WAY too close to the exhaust pipe, if you watch video from 16:05 to 16:50.
(at 16:02, you can see where the wire comes from spark/magneto coil, and heads down toward plug)
This will cause the spark plug insulation to melt off, and spark will ground out, causing engine to run badly.

19:54 yeah, i had that too, had a customer waiting around for me to look at his crappy mower and wouldn't just leave it, he was in A BIG HURRY and had to have it TODAY. He started futzing around with it while I was finishing up another job. He got his handy dandy spark plugs and socket and pull the plug, left the wire dangling...(it wouldn't crank when it came in, see where this is going?) He cranks it, then I hear screams of FIRE! FIRE! it was full of fuel, and he sprayed fuel all over the ungrounded plug lead. Luckluy I keep several extinguishers around, if you look at my profile pic, I'm a 33year veteran firefighter. I got it put out quickly, and the guy looked glumly at his mower and said, " well, it's gonna cost more now, isn't it?" I said yep, this is why I asked you to leave it. He learned, and has been one of my best customers ever since. He drops his stuff off, and says call him when it's ready, no hurry. 😀

About 5 years ago I had about the same shit happen but it was too early in the morning 4 me to put out a fire. A local guy brings this ancient old Simplicity and just by getting near it you could tell the carb was the issue the entire machine stank like gas. I ask him to push it off the trailer he has it on and leave it. But oh no he doesn't do that. The trailer because of the height of his truck and the hitch he could have easily just left it roll backward off the trailer but no as it is drifting backwards he turns the key to start it and then it back fires spits flames a few feet long and the thing erupts into a fireball he jumps off the mower rolls down the driveway then gets up starts dancing around my driveway hopping on one foot with both pants cuffs on fire he tries to put out his pants cuffs whips off his sneakers... Needless to say he drove home in a pair of my pants.... I called him about 3 month later after I got the new hood and wiring harness 4 it and asked him to come pick up. I said next time you decide to have a Bonfire in my driveway bring a bag of marshmellows.. He laughed like hell a long time on the phone until I told how much the bill was... I told him he was lucky he didn't catch one of my trucks on fire he wouldn't be able to afford that bill.. I definitely not a firefighter... It's lucky the whole mower didn't go up but because the carb was leaking there wasn't that much gas in it. What was in it was scary enough.

Only thing I can think of is a torch? Wondering if anything else to try?

Yes, make sure your space is well ventilated, you must have a fan that exhausts/expels air outside...right Taryl? I love your channel! Or a door and an open window or an open garage door. • @cashen7384

my grandpa still owns an auto brake shop and about 10 years ago he had got done doing a water pump on a buick lesabre and started it went to wash his hands and piss and forgot about it(very very quiet engines so its not hard) and started writing up the bill and the bay doors were shut because it was winter. well my mom got a call and it was my grandpa, he said a mumble and she heard the phone drop and THANK GOD his shop was less than 2 minutes from my mom and dads house because she flew over there in her car and picked him up off the ground. carbon monoxide took over that little 3 bay shop very quick and that was after almost 40 years of working on engines a HUGE wake up call to ALWAYS make sure you have good ventilation when working on gas engines. stay safe guys ✌

Can you take one of these B&S motors that came with a low slow amp alternator and put the higher amp quick charge alt in it's place easily like just a swap? Or does it require more alterations?

I swapped engines on a troy-built riding mowerthat had a magnetic blade clutch. The motor I put on it was a B and S 18 horsepower. It all worked well, except it would run the battery dead every time I ran it. I had to change out the alternator with a higher output with a new regulator and now it works great.

I bought new a 2006 J-D rider with a 22hp Briggs. It's always started kinda hard. Of course, J-D stuck a 160ah battery in it from the factory so that thing really didn't spin it much. I've got like a 320ah battery in it now. Still hesitant to spin it over. I sometimes have to use my hand to back the crank back off the compression so the engine will get a running start before it hits that compression and that seems to work okay. Never had the valve covers off. Is there a chance the factory didn't allow that .004 clearance. I've got 250+ hours on it and it does run good otherwise. Is it a matter of not putting a stronger starter in these engines when they got to be making bigger hp or is there something else? I can live with it (have since 2006) but if there's something else what could it be?
Enjoy your videos. Where do you buy your hair pieces? Have you considered a blond wig?

Check your valve clearances. A very common problem with hard cranking on Briggs OHV singles.

This was something I struggled with when fixing my moms scrub cadet. Bought the wrong alternator, returned for the right one AND bought a new starter without the correct about of teeth and absolutely destroyed the ring gear. Turns out that the ring gear didnt have a kit to replace it (some weird generation of vangard that the flywheel and ring gear are super rare) and found a used one in good shape. I spent a lot of money, but learned alot in the process.
I needed this video like 6 months ago! Anyways, great video! Keep it up!

Bad starter, bad stator, bad wiring, blown fuse, bad gears on flywheel. The classic case of lack of maintenance, and DIY mistakes snowball into a bigger problem.

What's a "BENDIX"? Oh yeah, I remember, I worked at my father's and grandfather's auto repair business in the 1970s... When replacing a starter or solenoid on a car, the replacement parts came in boxes marked BENDIX. My dad didn't put junk parts on customer's vehicles. So Bendix must have been a quality parts manufacturer... Bendix may have been the originator of the electric starter... I'll have to research it. A "BENDIX"/solenoid is really a TWO part electromechanical device: a MOTOR-CONTACTOR and a LINEAR-MOTOR-ACTUATOR combination. The solenoid(linear motor) is what shoves the starter gear into the flywheel ring gear. At the end of its throw, it slaps a heavy plate against two large contacts(a "motor contactor" or HIGH CURRENT switch) which connects the battery to the starter motor. That's the "click" sound when ya turn the key or press the start button. A strong spring returns the starter gear when disengaged and disconnects the starter motor from the battery. There's some more electrical hocus-pocus associated with these components but, basically, yir dealing with a lot of AMPS which necessitates big wires(both positive and negative), terminals, and contacts. Cuz all that arcing and sparking would kill a key switch or relay and the small dash board wires in the circuit. There will be a 43 question test on Thursday...bring a #2 pencil... Daryl's probably covered all of these details (and more) in his previous videos. I have a couple degrees... but I DON'T KNOW JACK about lawnmowers. I always learn something from his videos and bust up laughing at the skits... and there's yir dinner

What a Piece Of Junk Mower, Many Many Problems. Mostly Lack Of Maintenance. It's Good To Tinker With Things But If It's Electrical Or a Major Problem, These Things Should Be Taken To a Mechanic. You Can See Just By The Amount Of Grease On That Engine That It Is a Un-Loved Mower. Things Run Cooler When They Are Clean. A Simple Degrease . Great Video Taryl. Well Done

So I have a Briggs opposed twin that won't charge. Same charging setup as the one in the video but a twin. I swapped it into my JD that had a Kawasaki LX176 FC420V. I swapped the two wires coming from the alternator too but no luck. Fuses are good too. Thinking about setting up my own regulator to make it charge. The JD stuff seems incompatible.

This video was both entertaining AND informative- Didnt know youtube videos could do that!! haha Another great instalment from a hardworking mower shop and scammers at every turn!
Point that Taryl makes about that little diode is so critical unless you have deep wallets . A battery hold tons of amps and always wants to discharge to earth. In a car EVERY circuit has resistance to stop this. Even the starter motor has extremely low resistance to allow the battery to dump most of its amps at it as it can handle this flow.
The Mower has that little diode to allow the juice to only flow towards the battery and on a car the diodes are already inside the alternator doing the same job. If you find you battery totally dead- zero volts one morning, its possible that a diode has shorted or a circuit was left on like door open or lights.
When ever i have to work on a unknown engine, i always check the oil, water and wires in case someone has fooled with them so as to prevent what Taryl found; a ruined alt and possible overheated wires back to the ignition and all sorts of damage. In a mower, you can repair this easily, in a car with large hidden wire looms, really bad day ahead!! so check dont assume what others have done!

I just replaced the stator on a snowblower. Strangest thing happened to it. Somehow a small 5/16 bolt got in under the flywheel and stuck to one of the magnets which whacked the stator but it did not hurt the magnets. I've replaced a few Briggs vanguard V-Twin stators and regulators because someone had routed the wire incorrectly and either pinched it under the starter or it rubbed on the flywheel. It usually ruins the voltage regulator/rectifier as well if they are equipped with one. It's very tempting to buy the cheap amazon replacement regulators but Do Not Do it. They do not last more than a few months in most cases.
