I've been tinkering with small engines since I was 12, when Power Products made 2 cycle lsmokers (I'm now north of 70) and yet I learn something every time I watch your vids. Thanks T & also for the laughs.
my grandpa still owns an auto brake shop and about 10 years ago he had got done doing a water pump on a buick lesabre and started it went to wash his hands and piss and forgot about it(very very quiet engines so its not hard) and started writing up the bill and the bay doors were shut because it was winter. well my mom got a call and it was my grandpa, he said a mumble and she heard the phone drop and THANK GOD his shop was less than 2 minutes from my mom and dads house because she flew over there in her car and picked him up off the ground. carbon monoxide took over that little 3 bay shop very quick and that was after almost 40 years of working on engines a HUGE wake up call to ALWAYS make sure you have good ventilation when working on gas engines. stay safe guys ✌
This was something I struggled with when fixing my moms scrub cadet. Bought the wrong alternator, returned for the right one AND bought a new starter without the correct about of teeth and absolutely destroyed the ring gear. Turns out that the ring gear didnt have a kit to replace it (some weird generation of vangard that the flywheel and ring gear are super rare) and found a used one in good shape. I spent a lot of money, but learned alot in the process. I needed this video like 6 months ago! Anyways, great video! Keep it up!
These videos are the best combination of information and entertainment ever! you guys are a credit to the outdoor power equipment repair industry.......
OMG your comments sound so much like what I say to people who say they fixed it but it don't work now! HAHAHAHA! On a serious note, your instruction about valve setting for compression release was a revelation. I've been running a Scotts 25 horse mower for over 7 years now. Great mower but a hard starter. Recently decided to do a "refresh" with new gaskets to address the governor seal leak. Sure enough, the valves were almost three times the required setting! Thanks again for sharing the wisdom!
THIS is sooo funny AND VERY INFORMATIVE! The BEST information I've seen about fixing my lawn tractor. Most of the vids by others I've seen are really BAD and not well done...(Not informative either) THANK YOU Taryl...made my day!!!
I have watched most of your videos Taryl. I have about 12 years experience in my lawn mower shop. You have taught me 75 percent of what i know. Thanks Taryl. I appreciate you!! I do have one question. Do customers ever get mad/salty when you talk about what they shouldnt have done ( Example: People playing machanic when they shouldnt be)? Just curious because some customers of mine take shit apart and I express how much i dislike it. Tell them to bring it in before or call me and ill walk them through it. I dont put videos on youtube. Wondering if you had any hot heads come yelling at you for telling the the truth over a youtube video? I think its hilarious, i chuckle every time. Especially over the Junk, Junk, Junk......nikki six carbs. Then it get stuck in my head.. Thanks again Taryl!
Hi Taryl! Love this video. I was just watching it for knowledge and entertainment, but it turns out that you covered something I needed to know. That is the spring on the cam that releases the compression in the valves to have the engine turn over faster. Now I was told that the spring sometimes breaks, but you said to set the valves, so imma try that first 🙂 Thanks Taryl! 😊
I was suspicious from the beginning. Engine repair isn't comical - but I did hang in there and two thumbs up to you. I learned some things that I hadn't thought of to look for like the alternator wire routing. And Why does the engine die if the alternator has low output. I thought it was a spark thing. I never thought about the carb solenoid!!! BRILLIANT!!! That tip alone was worth the time to watch the video. Thank You!!
I can only imagine all the hilarious things people do and the things they say. Not only do they give you a good laugh but a chance to make a little extra money.
Taryl, great video mister. Always, very interesting and informative on the projects that you share. I will save this one in my Library. Keep up the good work, Thanks again
This video was both entertaining AND informative- Didnt know youtube videos could do that!! haha Another great instalment from a hardworking mower shop and scammers at every turn! Point that Taryl makes about that little diode is so critical unless you have deep wallets . A battery hold tons of amps and always wants to discharge to earth. In a car EVERY circuit has resistance to stop this. Even the starter motor has extremely low resistance to allow the battery to dump most of its amps at it as it can handle this flow. The Mower has that little diode to allow the juice to only flow towards the battery and on a car the diodes are already inside the alternator doing the same job. If you find you battery totally dead- zero volts one morning, its possible that a diode has shorted or a circuit was left on like door open or lights. When ever i have to work on a unknown engine, i always check the oil, water and wires in case someone has fooled with them so as to prevent what Taryl found; a ruined alt and possible overheated wires back to the ignition and all sorts of damage. In a mower, you can repair this easily, in a car with large hidden wire looms, really bad day ahead!! so check dont assume what others have done!
Ole Yogi heer was havin a ruff day but watchin ole Taryl fix stuff knot onlee kept me frum ridin my Deere John to the licker store (Unkle Eugene stole my truck) but I learnt me some cool stuff!
Great information Taryl! It sure is annoying when you get a machine in to replace one thing and about 10 other things show up. Kind of like rebuilding a bathroom, you plan on spending $2000.00 and it ends up costing $5000.00. That had to be a hefty bill on that mower, you definitely made it lots better than it came into your shop!I always learn something watching your videos and I have been working on and fixing mowers since I was a kid in my Dad's lawnmower repair shop, that is over 50 years ago!
Taryl, you can wreck the magnets on a engine by prying the flywheel , because when you hit the crank bolt , the flywheel comes off its taper on an angle. already seen it happen..the magnets can grab the Stator. The flywheel is made to be removed straight. hence the threaded holes in the fly wheel. I seen it happen on a Kawasaki Twin. Also I noticed on your "tube" replacement video, that you did not check the inside of the tire with your hand going slowly to check for any thorns ,small nails ect. checking a tubeless rim also can have sharp welds that can cause a puncture..., none the less your knowledge of 2 & 4stroke applications are very impressive, love the levity you bring with different characters. i'll stay subscribed, Keep up the great work.
Taryl! You forgot the mention! The most important lesson on this super cool and very informative vid at the end! Stuff you talked about...God damn...Carbon Monoxide Poisoning! Yes, make sure your space is well ventilated, you must have a fan that exhausts/expels air outside...right Taryl? I love your channel! Or a door and an open window or an open garage door. You must exchange that bad air! Having a pedestal fan that oscillates is also a good idea...lol I think I said too much.
It's always good to see Ronnie...HAHA!!.(he sure didn't stay in the shop long) People are really hard on these little engines and then call themselves fixing them in less then a minute WITHOUT evaluating what they did at all, then they really have to pay"the price". I bet that repair was about $300.00 or more because they bypassed that diode, causing the alternator to fry like it did.$$$$$$$$
As you said, if the the wrong alternator is installed, the battery will discharge with the electric clutch-as the battery discharges, the clutch pulls more current, and will burn up-I saw this in the shop-the same thing will happen if the mower has a bad battery, and is jump started to operate it-always make sure there is a good battery installed-also, never jump start a mower with a running car-the car alternator with burn up the mower alternator-just a few tips-you have given many to me-thanks!
19:54 yeah, i had that too, had a customer waiting around for me to look at his crappy mower and wouldn't just leave it, he was in A BIG HURRY and had to have it TODAY. He started futzing around with it while I was finishing up another job. He got his handy dandy spark plugs and socket and pull the plug, left the wire dangling...(it wouldn't crank when it came in, see where this is going?) He cranks it, then I hear screams of FIRE! FIRE! it was full of fuel, and he sprayed fuel all over the ungrounded plug lead. Luckluy I keep several extinguishers around, if you look at my profile pic, I'm a 33year veteran firefighter. I got it put out quickly, and the guy looked glumly at his mower and said, " well, it's gonna cost more now, isn't it?" I said yep, this is why I asked you to leave it. He learned, and has been one of my best customers ever since. He drops his stuff off, and says call him when it's ready, no hurry. 😀
About 5 years ago I had about the same shit happen but it was too early in the morning 4 me to put out a fire. A local guy brings this ancient old Simplicity and just by getting near it you could tell the carb was the issue the entire machine stank like gas. I ask him to push it off the trailer he has it on and leave it. But oh no he doesn't do that. The trailer because of the height of his truck and the hitch he could have easily just left it roll backward off the trailer but no as it is drifting backwards he turns the key to start it and then it back fires spits flames a few feet long and the thing erupts into a fireball he jumps off the mower rolls down the driveway then gets up starts dancing around my driveway hopping on one foot with both pants cuffs on fire he tries to put out his pants cuffs whips off his sneakers... Needless to say he drove home in a pair of my pants.... I called him about 3 month later after I got the new hood and wiring harness 4 it and asked him to come pick up. I said next time you decide to have a Bonfire in my driveway bring a bag of marshmellows.. He laughed like hell a long time on the phone until I told how much the bill was... I told him he was lucky he didn't catch one of my trucks on fire he wouldn't be able to afford that bill.. I definitely not a firefighter... It's lucky the whole mower didn't go up but because the carb was leaking there wasn't that much gas in it. What was in it was scary enough.
thanks for the oil seal that nice to know ok so i have a burnt alternater and i am looking for a new one for my old briggs and startton 12hp but how much amp is the original alternater couse i can find 16 amps and 30amps alternater coils and if there are higher amp coils what is the best one for charging please advice greatings Anton
great video Taryl. I went to school for small engine repair and always enjoy your vids man and learn a few tricks along the way. take care ✌ much love from st louis MO
Hi Teradactyl! Man i can relate, as i have been fixin stuff for most of my life, ( im 60). And i love your vids!! From U.P. of Mi. the revved up yooper
That's the exact same mower as my Ranch King MTD except my is the XL rated at 12.5hp. This was great, never have taken my cover off, didn't know about tightening the dip stick seal.=, thanks.
Put me down as well. Mine been leaking for years. Now know what to do. That model motor is a real good one in mho. Have 3 of them and they just go n go.
Can you take one of these B&S motors that came with a low slow amp alternator and put the higher amp quick charge alt in it's place easily like just a swap? Or does it require more alterations?
I swapped engines on a troy-built riding mowerthat had a magnetic blade clutch. The motor I put on it was a B and S 18 horsepower. It all worked well, except it would run the battery dead every time I ran it. I had to change out the alternator with a higher output with a new regulator and now it works great.
Funny and informative! Love it. Taryl, my 5-year old 19HP Briggs Intek has a Diode I'm told, not a regulator. Where is it and how do I test. I want to make sure my new battery stays charged. Thanks!
Great as always. How is when I jump a dead battery the tractor will run, how is there power for the carb solenoid? It doesn't seem like there would be enough power initially?
You guys are the best...real funny skit...LMAO!!! Champion repair Taryl! Not too proud to admit, I lost plenty skin and blood using screwdrivers on those starter ring clips.

You need to save that ring gear for a Christmas special... "Slippers got run over by a ring gear."
Oh that's terrible! 😃😃

Taryl..... Love watching you work your magic.

something."
Me: Yikes!
He even adds a some humor too.
Darn right

and cannot wait to see new ones as they become available..
This is my favorite Taryl video.
I would definitely trust you because I watch your show. You know what you are doing.
I really enjoyed this one. A bit of everything, even sarcasm. Good job Taryl.
Or a door and an open window or an open garage door. great video very informative thanks taryl
Taryl- you rock. All the best .
The longer videos are Awesome!!
Nothing beats experience on multible issue mowers - thanks for sharing
Hey Taryl thank you for the good vid or good Dinner. Be safe.
Man you helped me out and taught me something new thank you much brother.
It's always good to see Ronnie...HAHA!!.(he sure didn't stay in the shop long)
People are really hard on these little engines and then call themselves fixing them in less then a minute WITHOUT evaluating what they did at all, then they really have to pay"the price".

Love you guys!!! =) Great video!
Excellent! Nice work and explanation.
One of your best videos!!
LOL best part at 4:03. I’m still laughing.
Me too...hahahaha
I should add the high voice sounds a bit like Mr. Bill....oh nooooo !!!
Definitely my favorite part! He seemed so... psychotically calm. LMAO
I'll take the used one.... 😆😆
Yep
As funny as any movie script

Great video again! Keep em coming please.
I didn't know that, holy cow and I was cleaning it every time I used the motor lol Thanks Taryl.
I cant believe the credit card skit..it was the funniest taryl dactyl show yet! Great acting..especially when ronnie called u an idiot.

Funny and informative! Love it. Taryl, my 5-year old 19HP Briggs Intek has a Diode I'm told, not a regulator. Where is it and how do I test. I want to make sure my new battery stays charged. Thanks!
Great video with tons of information, thanks Taryl you rock!
Great episode Taryl, you guys are awesome!
This video saved me a pritty penny. I have the same motor on my White.
