    Hi, just purchased a brand new battery and it ran like a top for 3 weeks. Went out to start it today and battery is dead. Doesnt show anything on multimeter. Wondering if it's my alternator or voltage regulator. Appreciate any assistance.

      A bad alternator will not produce the voltage necessary to charge the battery. A 12 volt battery will need about 14 volts to charge it.

    In reality, and to be technically correct, this is replacing the stator. In an alternator, you have a stator and a rotor. On a small engine such as this, the rotor is the flywheel (with the magnets around the inner circumference) and spins around the stator. When the magnets in the rotor appear over the coil in the stator, a magnetic field is developed in that coil and induces a positive (or negative) current and Each time a gap between the magnets on the rotor passes a coil on the stator, the magnetic field collapses and induces an opposite current into the coil. 1/2 of the sine wave is positive and 1/2 of the sine is negative, thus a true AC current is generated. This current has to be rectified to provide a DC current in order to charge the battery or to power a DC accessory.

    • @AlwaysFreeAmerica
      @AlwaysFreeAmerica 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jbolanos10 Repairclinic is erroneously referring to the stator as the alternator, what he should say is he suspects the stator, however you stated you already replaced that. You also state you replaced the flywheel, which in a small engine is the equivalent of the rotor in an alternator. By changing both the flywheel and stator, you have effectively replaced an entire alternator. One thought I have, not having any experience with that brand, would be a rectifier or solenoid. Trace your wires from the stator to see what, if any, components they may go to.

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      We recommend looking for a shorted wire or battery. You can try disconnecting the wire that connects to the battery to recharge it and see if the stator coils still get hot. There should be two separate circuits from the stator. One DC output for the battery may have a voltage regulator that may be shorted and an AC output for the lights. Looking at a wiring diagram for your model may help.

    • @AlwaysFreeAmerica
      @AlwaysFreeAmerica 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matt Rohn Hey Matt, some JD's use a rectifier, usually attached to the shroud of the engine, that could also go bad and present you with the symptoms you describe. They're pretty inexpensive. To find it, follow the wiring from your stator to the connector. It should also be said that not all of these use a rectifier, so just be aware.
