All these years later, I still like hearing Ian Brown 'not singing'. I admit, he has lost a lot of it especially his range but that kind of talk was starting up in those days to.

    He wasn't always in tune.
But whenever he stayed in tune, he was top ten vocalist material.
I think he strays once in this performance, but it's where many people would stray slightly. But his voice is so rich that he steals the show.

Interesting. I'm so obsessive about this stuff, yet i didn't know about this until I was scouring Discogs for an original copy of Sally Cinnamon recently. Wonder why the switch for the re-releases? I always thought the comparatively terrible 7" version of Sally was a demo, maybe one of the versions of AATS was too, and half arsed admin saw them switched later on. The mystery of where the proper version of Full Fathom Five disappeared to for twenty years always intrigued me, and whether the other version really *is* Peter Hook's mix of Elephant Stone. Someone really needs to write a Revolution In the Head style book about the Roses.

What's this about the "proper" version of full fathom five?

    • @moosemoss2645
      @moosemoss2645 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think personally that it’s all a product of never really quite dropping on to the right deal, producer, line-up and obvious evolution in their sound for about 5 years. All of the above mixed in with the punk diy ethic of the band and those in and around the Manchester music scene. I more or less formed this opinion as I typed it but as I think harder about it maybe the band knew that they were on the edge of something majestic with all the decent tunes that they were amassing and weren’t ready to “sell the whole farm” until they knew everything was right. All in all though, what a fuckin band eh?

I bought the original 12” (without barcode) of Sally back in 1987. A friend and I bought another copy of the 12” in 1989 for another friend at uni. When we played the 1989 version we discovered to our horror both Sally and All Across the Sand were crappy demo versions. Hence the nickname we gave to the 2nd version - “Crap Sally” to distinguish it from the proper one. 20 years later I emailed Paul Birch the owner of FM Revolver records to enquire if he was ever going to release the correct version of All Across the Sand” on CD. The debut album was getting the deluxe treatment and re-release around this time by Silvertone for the 20 anniversary. My hope was the renewed interest in the Roses could result in the original version of this song being available again. Paul Birch didn’t even realise about the different versions until my email. After a series of emails between us he promised me he would re-release it and I would get a free copy. 12 years later I’m still waiting. No wonder they did a paint job on him!

    Bones of an impressive romance
    Scattered all across the sand
A secret safe with all the world
Too vain to seem so capable
    Can you hear it calling?
    Do you feel warmer
    As the hired hand's exposed?
How can a pretty painted shell
Send them all packing off to Hell?
A freight train laughs and rattles by
You kissed the girls and made them die
    Can you hear it calling?
    Do you feel warmer
    As the hired hand's exposed?
And I'll never come here again
And we will never come here again
And we will never play here again, again
    Can you hear it calling?
    Do you feel warmer
    As the hired hand's exposed?
    After her call
    After her call
    After her call
    Didn't call
    Can you hear it calling?
    Do you feel warmer
    As the hired hand's exposed?
    After her call
    After her call
    After her call
    Has she called?
