    I've told my spouse that if i ever (heaven forbid) end up in a coma, just play this song on repeat and I'll fight my way back! I absolutely ADORE this arrangement from beginning to end. And the harmony/choral rich ending does the same to me- straight up shivers and wet eyes.

    @Badger77722 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    I can certainly see why Come Along would be recommended to you as a lighter, more fun piece by Pentatonix - I've always thought that (to paraphrase Mitch) I really don't understand the lyrics, but it looks like PTX has a lot of fun singing it!
    And yes, this has a pretty good Mitch-slap in it - unlike a lot of songs, the melody really doesn't "foreshadow" that note from Mitch, it pretty much just seems to come from nowhere!
    There are at least 3 literary references in the lyrics - "heffalump", from Winnie the Pooh, "borogroves" and "slithy toves" from Jabberwocky, and "shut you ears when sirens sing" from The Odyssey. I always feel like there may be more that I'm not getting, but no one so far has come up with more than these.
    Boy, you weren't kidding when you talked about Matt's part in the final section jumping all over the place - until i saw your transcription, I had no idea he made that many LARGE jumps between notes, and did it a couple of times!

  • @kayecastleman6353

    Great to see you still enjoying PTX! This song reminds me of Nightmare Before Christmas and other Tim Burton fantasy/creepy creations, so I relate to your comment about Matt's "cartoon villain vibes." If you want to listen to another superb version of Matt's cartoon villain character, I recommend "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." It's engaging from start to finish, an excellent showcase for Matt's smooth base voice, and a captivating glimpse into his fun-loving personality.

    Now that you have started reacting to videos with Matt, I hope you get around to some of PTXs most viewed videos from this period. Such as Sounds of Silence, Amazing Grace, The Prayer and 90s Dance Medley. There are plenty of others to react to, but these are the more popular songs from the Matt period. Also if you would like to listen to the 1st song/video Matt did with PTX, then try New Rules/Are You That Somebody.

    Can I just say, that really was the perfect video filter for that song! :D Thank you once again for a brilliant, insightful analysis. If you're looking for a calm song, I highly recommend My Heart With You (the official video is a live recording!) or The Prayer - both from the Matt era. I was also wondering if you'd consider reacting to songs that don't have a music video? There are some real gems from both the Avi and Matt era that hardly get any attention (e.g. Love You Long Time, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Rosegold, I Saw Three Ships, When You Wish Upon A Star, Petals, Side).

      @sirhairless, I totally agree. Two of my favorite Christmas songs of theirs get very little attention. They both remind me of Carol of the Bells in different ways. The first is "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," which I believe is on their first Christmas album. With your love of Renaissance music, I know you would love the second: "Coventry Carol." Both are on a You Tube channel called Yule Log Videos (which has all the music on PTX's Christmas albums).
      In a completely different genre, their recording of "River" (the Joni Mitchell song) is exquisite. You'll find it there too.
      links: O Come, O Come Emmanuel: th-cam.com/video/RTsCC0hwL5g/w-d-xo.html
      "Coventry Carol: th-cam.com/video/bdE3oFfMv6E/w-d-xo.html
      "River": th-cam.com/video/5ILplwX6sxo/w-d-xo.html
      And one more I just found (and it's not a Christmas song). "Invincible." This is a collab with two famous Indian singers that I had never heard of: Shreya Ghoshal, who evidently sings more than 20 languages, and . Link: th-cam.com/video/B0t8lLyy3fg/w-d-xo.html. This one would gain you a whole viewership (and now I want to hear more of her work).
      Ok, their collab on Silent Night with the King's Singers is also extraordinary I thought their earlier Silent Night (the one you reviewed) was the best, but this one may be even better. It never fails to bring tears and goosebumps.

    I love that you said "I'm not sure about happy, but it's definitely fun, definitely upbeat." Very true! It SOUNDS happy, but the lyrics are (to take your phrase out of context), "quite unsettling." I can't decide if PTX are playing friends who want to rescue us from "greed, anger, and boredom," or whether they are sirens luring us to disaster. I also liked your description of Matt's solo as "cartoon-villainy" Now THAT is something that had never occurred to me, but I"ll be hearing it completely differently from now on. Now, even if I had disagreed with all your comments, you would have won me over, with all my heart, with your references to "Carol of the Bells," even including a clip. That was the very first PTX song I ever heard and it still makes me shudder in ecstasy every time I hear it. I've written more than I intended, so just one more thing: You say you'd love to sing this, that it sounds so much fun to sing. True--but those slow trills--you said "flutter"--are practically impossible for ordinary people to sing! (Not that you're an ordinary singer!) And then to do them in perfect synchrony--wow. Oh, and as far as I know, Kevin and Matt have no tattoos--for primarily religious reasons, I believe, though neither of them is judgy about it.

    I can see this is going to be one of my favourite of your PTX reactions. I've already listened to it five times! I love it when you get very enthusiastic about a piece and do your transcripts so I can see the breakdowns of the arrangements. I love this one. It's such a fun, but also weird and ethereal take on the song. Cosmo Sheldrake absolutely loves this cover and it stimulated a huge amount of exposure for his version. It's so catchy and even though the video is so simple - they're just sitting in front of a screen with brightly coloured clothes on - it's still somehow extremely effective. I love the big, epic VoicePlay productions with costumes and sets etc, but sometimes with PTX arrangements I feel like that would be too much of a good thing and would detract slightly from their incredible arrangements. For more drama, though, you should watch their versions of 'My favourite things' which is a gothic/Steampunk dark Christmas version. Also, if you like 'the nightmare before Christmas' they do a very theatrical, clever version of 'making Christmas' with costumes etc. they are both really engaging.
    By the way, you were spot on with your memory of the heffalump from Winnie the Pooh - that is what he was referring to. There are also some Alice in Wonderland references and other fantasy books in there. It made me smile when you said that you thought people were only recommending songs with Mitch slaps in them! To be fair, there are a lot of PTX songs with those in! They're often the pentaholics' favourites too! 😊
    I wonder if you are going to finally do Hallelujah as your slow, moving one. That is often people's first Mitch slap moment - but you'll see it's not one insanely high note. Their video of that one is their most watched video of all time - over 700 MILLION views! Their cover of the Sound of Silence is also fantastic.
    Looking forward as always to the next one. Thank you!

      Thanks!! Oh yes, definitely effective Less choreo = more focus on the colours and lighting. I'm sure there'll be many more Mitch slaps to come
      I think I have another one in mind for the next slow, calm reaction - one I've seen commented/recommended a fair few times now! (It's not 'Hallelujah' )

    Once again, you’ve given me something new, although probably skewed in my case. I think the “pick-a-dee” ending totally fits the lyrics. This is one of my enduring favorites from them, so thanks for the upbeat selection. I’m hoping Mad World is the solemn, introspective choice we’ll get next time. As always, loved your analysis, and it’s nice to have Future Sir back in the mix! Peace …

    This one is so fun!! I remember the first time I heard this it gave me Dr. Seuss vibes! But honestly I think it was the bright color choice of outfits and the quirky vibes of the song more than the melody! I have heard this numerous times now and just love it! Always Love your reactions and analysis!! ❤

    Great reaction to a wonderful version of this song. The original video by Cosmo is very interesting, with scrolling pictures of mystical sea creatures. There is another reactor who had an interesting take on this song. She said that many of the phrases in the video come from faery mythology, and she said that it's not wise to not take them seriously. That really made an impression on me, as she interpreted some of the lyrics in "faery speak".

    I'm always amazed how you analyze these songs...masterful. I would really love you to jump ahead to some recent songs, or it will go on forever with their playlist. I'm going to plead with you to do "Kiss From A Rose" (Seal), because it is live and shows their amazing growth. My suggestion is that you put their playlist on a board and throw a dart to see which one you review (lol). 😀😀😀

    What a fun song that allows them to play vocally and gives Matt a chance to shine. Matt’s sound to me has a formal vibe to it. More Broadway, less pop sound. Nevertheless, I’m just so glad they found him though because he’s a great fit for the group in many ways. Love your analysis. Always helps me hear things I would have missed otherwise. 👍

    As I understand it, clips of this song were used in a telephone company ad, which is how PTX found it. Maybe that's where you heard it before. This cover introduced me to Cosmo Sheldrake, who's now one of my favorite musicians.

    Sir Hairless, I just loooooove your musical reactions. This is so much more meaningful than all the crappy, noisy reviews that are going around. You really know what you are talking about, and I love the details of how you take the song apart. I have some knowledge of music theory, and you made me better understand and apply it through your explanations. I love the watery eyes the moment there is a beautiful part in the music. You're a joy to watch.

    One of my favorite PTX songs that doesn't get enough recognition. Cosmo did it with 8 musicians using voice and 18-20 instruments and sound effects. They did it with 5 voices. If you want some fun there is a video about each member's vocal range that has Mitch hitting the "whistle range".

    • @Gwennedd

    • @LindaVernon

      Actually, Kirstie is more successful than Mitch in that video with the whistle range, because like Mariah Carey she can actually sing words at that whistle level. 🙂

    I know your Pentatonix list is huge!! And I don’t want to add to it, but wanted to check if “My Favorite Things” is on it? Their take on it is awesome in my opinion. It’s definitely different from the original. (I meant to comment this when you reacted to Forestella’s version.) It’s one of their more in “costume” & in “character” videos. But the arrangement is pretty cool. Also, in my years of watching Pentatonix reactor’s reactions I’ve only come across 2 reactions to it. Which has always surprised me. It would fall in the “fun” category!!

I love the arrangement that you explained so well, each passed solo, that repeated suspension, Matt’s marching band like pompous bass, Kevin’s killing beats and snare rolls, that choral heavenly finale.
