Regular Car Reviews: 2014 Ford Focus ST

  • ST stands for "See Tanya? It's a family car. It's perfect for our first child. These seats hug you. We can treat ourselves. We don't have to get the base model. We can treat ourselves to the high trim. This one has navigation. It gets good mileage. Ford is really good these days. What are these dials? I don't know. They probably don't mean anything. Oh look big strong brakes! Yes, yes, this car is safe. I've sold my RX-7 like you asked...no more fast cars for me...nope. I promise. Yes. You like it? Good, let's buy it."

      Trevor Reis I am looking into getting a CRX as a project within the next few months. Is there anything that I should look out for?

    • @TrevorReis
      @TrevorReis 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One that still has the "trunk" cover and cargo hatch in good working order would be a start. That would probably be a good indicator of someone who would take good care of the car in general. If the steering wheel is not very near centered when going straight it is a good indicator that there is some or has been some alignment trouble, most likely front end collisions or hopping curbs at high speeds.
      Other than that, just make sure you have a trusted mechanic look at the engine before you buy. And good luck, I very VERY seldom see any CRXs that have not been ruined by shitty body work or fender benders.

    • @thelifeofguyon
      @thelifeofguyon 10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I completely agree. Is it too much a sin to ask that I choose my level of safety for myself? I don't see why you can ride a moped and that's totally fine but if your car doesn't protect you from a freight train in a tornado you're screwed.

It already saved my life at least once, grim Buffalo road conditions, heavy rain at 35 degrees, when some old Bat in a Chrysler 300 just randomly swept three lanes in front of me on an exit ramp at speed. This is from a car guy that bought a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in San Diego, 1990, 351C 4V 4-Speed Top Loader...drove that car for six years as a daily driver :)

    I think the ST is the blueprint for fun cars that millenials will buy. I worked at a used dealer that sold late model used cars and one of the things millenials wanted was practicality. We're talking singles or couples without kids that didn't even want kids. They wanted fun but we had a CR-Z for months because it wasn't practical enough for millenials but we would have sold ST's like crazy. It's fun, it's semi-fast, and it's practical. Millenials are literally keeping the small hatchback in while boomers and Gen-X continues the rise of the crossover.

    I so hate torque steer. It was the most disconcerting thing when I went from my beastly RWD full-size car to a little FWD car with a bit too much power (in fact, you reviewed a very similar car to my first). I still am not used to it. RWD is so rare that when I end up with RWD rental cars I always wonder why they track so well (yet have some power) until I realize they aren't FWD.
    Thanks for the great review. I'm hoping to make a 2015 model my first new car...

    Not all of us want forced induction. My 2005 Focus ST is naturally aspirated, and it is without question the best driving FWD car I've ever driven. Yes, better than a GTI, better than an SI. Part of why it's so awesome is its amazing NA power delivery and simplicity/light weight. When it's no good anymore, I'm going to do my best to find another sub-75,000 mile 05-07 ST. If I can't, I'll be buying a 2015+ Focus ST, but I REALLY wish they offered a Focus with ST handling and a NA version of the RS's 2.3. I'll tune it, to reduce the possibility of detonation and eliminate lag as best I can, but I would much rather have a snappy NA motor in that kind of car.

    For anyone eyeballing a used 2013-2014 focus ST - do it. I just picked up an 80k single owner ST2 for like 13.5, and it is by far the most fun I have ever had in a practical 4 door daily driver. I got my wife into motorcycles and manual cars a few years back, and she is just as into this ST as I am. The torque steer is fun, and the factory suspension is great too. Low speed wheel feedback could be better, but it is such an engaging and rewarding drive.

ST's do not like lugging, so def try to keep revs around 2k when clutching out to prevent stalls as you start. Also, never go full gas below like 2k rpm either. Google what LSPI is if you wanna know why. And while that car is CPO and ST3, I would try to work on that price a hair. • @WingsStrings
    @WingsStrings 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had a chance to drive a used 2012 Focus sedan, basic model with the weird "dual-clutch" automatic. (I know, blah blah slushbox, blah blah recalls... I was still learning stick at the time.) I can't stress this enough: you need to luck out and find one without transmission issues if you want to try the automatic. Other than that and the headrests in the front row being bent forward at an uncomfortable angle and the usual used car dilapidation, it was very difficult to find any fault with the car. It handles surprisingly well despite being front engine/ front wheel drive, and the steering is not that heavy, either. It won't shove you into the seat like a Saturn V rocket, but it is scary how promptly and effortlessly it accelerates for what it is. The brakes are amazing as Mr. Regular stated; there's a bit of a spongy area that lets you ease into them for gradual stops, much to the joy of anyone else in the car with you.
    The 2012 Ford Focus Sedan is the Toad of cars: you initially avoid it for misplaced stigmas of slow boring lameness, but you thank it later when the Donkey Kongs and Bowsers are understeering off of the unfenced corners of the Pacific Coast Highway.
    The aux jack is hidden away in a weird spot (inside the passenger-side glove compartment), but it is there, and even compressed-quality TH-cam audio sounded listenable through the speakers. The 2012 Focus had some different (less grumpy) body styling and interior work, and the engine bay still has plastic, but not 2014-level plastic.
    The predictably--albeit not horribly--slushy transmission tends to short-shift under normal driving conditions, but if you give it just the right amount of gas, then it'll surge ahead close to redline. You can't completely floor it with a foot as angry as modern headlights though, or it'll either chirp or quit on you, and you can't be too coy with it either, or it'll get confused during the gear selection and second guess itself like a bad standardized test taker who doesn't just trust their intuition to just fill a bubble and get to the written portion. It responds best to decisiveness. No more, no less. It's also surprising how whisper quiet it is, too. At a stoplight, you'll barely hear the AC impeller and not the motor at all.
    I also got to try a used 2012 Fiesta sedan from the same lot, and while it tends to hug the higher rev range and is overall more playful and sporty, I found that the 1.6L 4-banger had to work a lot harder to get the same amount of power, and the automatic (with a similar dual-clutch design) didn't translate that reduced power as well without having to overwork itself. Even after a short test drive, the engine was VERY hot and expunged a wall of oozy smells, whereas the 2.0L 4-banger in the Focus could pull a 6% grade without breaking a sweat, and because it doesn't have to work as hard, it almost gets as many miles to the gallon as the automatic Fiesta. The Fiesta is also noticeably louder, due to the HOSE PUMPING SOUNDS INTO THE CAR as noted in RCR's Fiesta review.
    The Fiesta has even better handling over the already well-grounded Focus because it's smaller, so right on there. Both have the built-in double mirrors to check your blind spots, but in both cars, if your seat is just right, you can look right past the pillar next to your ear. Compared to other slaves to modern reverse-fat-camp pillar regulations (PRIUS), visibility is pretty good for both cars, though it'll take some adjustment to learn where the corners of the car are, because you can't see them.
    Overall, if you're not an insufferable dudebro who obnoxiously revs in front of jaundiced grandmothers at Costco and abuses the accelerator while blaming their childish behavior on the transmission, then I think that you'll be surprised at how nuanced and understated the car is: quiet smooth styling, quiet smooth engine, but a wealth of secrets to explore with a skip in its step. They're not without their flaws, but they're pretty inexpensive used, and that makes them a deceptively fun daily driver that almost anyone can have.

    Quick little cars...was quarantine cruising the other day in my full bolt on 2000 trans am. One of these went to pass me, starting at 65, he stayed right there up to about 120. Granted I stayed in 5th gear not thinking I needed to grab 4th, (which I ultimately didnt need to) he didnt gain ground on me but I was surprised that it stayed right there in my passenger blind spot. I 4th geared him the next time just to let him know....but that was a fun day 🙂

    Agree with mostly everything in this review...but assuming I heard correctly, he stated that you don't feel the boost till you're deep into the RPMS.
    Definitely not true, you can LITERALLY feel the car get SLOWER after about 5200rpm...such small hotside, much torque, crazy back pressure.

    I'd like to throw my hat in on saying yes i would like to see a dedicated video regarding the 70 similarities in the 70's v today. It's also pretty funny to me that the ST is 10 years newer than the SRT-4 yet aside from creature comforts and nvh improvements isn't all that improved upon! I was also sad to see no comment on the ecoboosts fuel economy or the use of an e-diff that still does not defeat torque steer. Something tells me you guys were pretty stoked on this car before you drove it..

    I drive a Contour SVT, one of those cars that completely disconnects from the ford lineup. It doesn't drive of feel like a bread and butter contour.
    It feels like a car that should of been available permanently for those who didn't want to drive a mustang or didn't have enough money to buy a European performance sedan.
    Just like the ST, a practical family sedan that you can drive like a race car (200hp), and save you gas when you need to, since it only had 2.5L(n/a) of engine displacement.

    Funny you mention being a family guy and getting a Focus ST. That is the reason I got a Focus ST not the Fiesta ST. Not married yet, not even a GF but that is coming. I have a 2016, it's modified and I don't mean this Stage bs, it has a large turbo (relatively speaking it's a small mid-frame that is what Garrett calls it) GTX3071. I drag race it, I need the power.... Anyway I use it for rideshare too and people love it.
