They are illegal in NYC and in most localities in NY but if you aren't endangering others then most cops in smaller townships will leave you alone
I had one of these and I cannot understate how dangerous they are.
If you get one get at least a motorcycle helmet, motorcycle gloves, thick pants and only ride with your arms covered (at least a hoodie).

@@avipishy1710 I've had one for a few months now, if you're responsible with them they aren't very dangerous. The people around you are more likely to harm you than the bike is. Keep in mind, I'm fourteen years of age.
When I was a kid, I lived in Iran (1958-1960) and I saw quite a few bicycles puttering about with 2 stroke motors affixed to the handlebars. Everything there is very much spread out, and hot, and dry. You could get heat stroke pedaling from village to village (I lived in a little port town called Abidan) but the guys I saw riding these contraptions looked quite pleased with themselves.

I daily drove one of these for almost two years. I got the 80cc kit for about $125. The only issue I had was a cracked top plate. I want to call it a head but it's not really. Anyway yeah it was absolutely terrifying to ride at 40mph on a rickety pawn shop bike. But honestly it was worth it.

Does the engine heat up after a while ? Which makes it dangerous to touch off
@@tomboland6877 you definitely won’t want to touch it but it has fins on it so it is air cooled so as long as your moving and not just sitting there for a while reving it it will stay cool but still don’t touch it

I believe with some tweaking it could probably go over 60mph.
Mine is an 80cc on a mountain bike.
It has a high compression head with an expansion chamber muffler.

I never knew that you could use compressed air to get the rubbed grips off of handlebars. This guy definitely knows what he's doing.

4th year after trusting your review and buying one of those kits here. It still runs flawlessly after a lot of abuse and neglect both in trail and regular commute. The only thing that failed after first year was the stock chain, stretching up to the point of sagging (replaced with garage door chain, which only stretched by 1 link in 3rd year so far). This thing really changed my life becoming my main way of mid-long range transport (Especially great for hauling bags of potatoes when 2 large milk and bread crates are installed. My heart would probably give up on regular bike if I tried to move all of that around). Thanks.

My grandfather from NJ got me involved in motorized bicycle kits. He had a 2-stroke that sat on the front of the 10-speed and used friction against the tire to run the bike. I would always ride this contraption when I would visit him as a kid. I was enthralled.
A few years later I saved enough grass cutting and snow shoveling money to buy a kit that Sears had. The kit used the same method of drive and after a few years and many friction wheels replaced I graduated to a moped and finally motorcycles. Good memories. Thanks for making this video. 😉

I had that same Sears kit you are talking about in about 1984. My dad got it for me, it was awesome when I was like 13.
I installed a 4 stroke engine kit on my sons mountain bike. We had to modify it because the bike had hydraulic disc brakes on it but it worked great. He rode it from Malta Montana all the way to Moose lake Minnesota pulling a 2 kid carrying trailer full of camping equipment & food & he had a camping backpack he wore. It took him 9 days but he was sight seeing along the way.
Wow! That's 500 or so miles, depending on the route!

Some pointers for people who're interested in using one of these based on my experience of about 2000 miles:
I built a bike with a 49cc varient of this engine back in 2011 and used it for going to college. I used a steel frame to avoid the metal fatigue the vibrations would cause to some aluminium frames making them weaker. Even painted it and did a 100% custom job, she was a lovely yoke to potter around on here in Ireland.
-The slang term on the internet for this specific engine is called a "happy time engine" because very few of them last beyond 2500 to 3500 miles due to poor quality components.
-Heavier bike frames are more suitable and lighter ones(i.e. racing bikes) have less material to support these.
-Disc brakes on at least the front are really mandatory because in the rain standard bicycle brakes will seem absolutely terrifying, trust me on that. I installed a 180mm hydraulic disc brake on the front personally.
-Replace the chinese spark plug straight away, they suck.
-The original spark plug caps are also terrible, I bought an NGK one for 5 euro in a motorbike shop.
-I ran 25:1 after the break in and accepted spark plug cleaning duties to increase engine life.
-The front left engine cover is highly prone to water ingress and in light rain was caused the electrical system to fail on me twice meaning I've had to replace the stator. If I was building another one I'd drill a hole on the bottom of that compartment for drainage and seal up the rest of it even better than I already did.
-The clutch arm actuates a pin inside the engines sprocket that relies on that sprocket cover being on very tight. The pin and arm are made of very poor quality steel and it's a completely dry metal to metal contact so I highly advise regualr grasing of it and carrying some kind of screwdriver to tighten the cover if it gets loose or you'll be pedeling a very heavy bicycle home very slowly.
-The exhausts and their bolts can rust very quickly if not looked after.
-The petol tanks 4 studs are low quality and directly welded to the tank so they strip easiliy.
-Bring a small pre measured bottle of 2 stroke oil with you so you can just dump it into the petrol tank when empty and fill up at any petrol station.
-Ensure the carb screws are set correctly.
-Do not use off road tyres on paved roads. I had a small accident because extra weight + low traction + slight leaning = bad time.
-Hgher tyre pressures than normal are required for the excess weight.
I stopped using mine in Ireland in 2012 as the laws were changed and the motorized bicycle then fell into the category of a moped even though it was under 50cc. Fail to follow tthe laws where you live at your own peril.

If you install a front disc brake, you need a fork that will support it: standard forks will bend from the force put on the caliper. If you don't mind building a wheel, a drum brake is a good alternative.

Hey Todd! To minimize the engine vibration, get an old tire and cut it into strips. Use the strips between the engine and the frame to prevent engine vibrations from being transferred to the frame. Anything rigid connecting the engine to the frame (chain guard, muffler, etc) should be isolated from the frame as well. Thanks for your service!

Part Two: I got it running pretty good, the motor finally stays put. The chain tensioner made a mess of the frame and was no good from the start, so I ordered a spring-type. While it works, the spring itself requires a major upgrade in order to use it on the roads around here. Moderate bumps are okay, but one good pothole over a curve and the chain falls off. The spring isn't stiff enough, nor is it in the right place. Therefore, I'm going to take a much stiffer spring and hook it to the frame of the bike until I can get a set of motorcycle-type wheel adjusters built for a mountain bike. My recommendation is to get the motorcycle type wheel adjusters from the start and cut the chain to the right length. Tension devices are normally for things that stay put.

It looked pretty loose on the second grip already. Normally works best having closed grips because that allows the air to balloon up the grip.

I built one of these 12 yrs ago on a tandem bike. Still runs great. 31mph on GPS via my phone. Bike weight is 87 lbs, 1 person @ 160. I use AMSoil racing 2 stroke @ 32:1 mix. 87 octane.
Swapped out head studs for better and a few other tweeks. Never broke down. Let the carb run rich. Dont resize jets. If you push it like I do it likes to be rich to protect it's self.

That's the Velo Solex, those a great fun, they are not converted bicycles, they where actually build from the factory that way

Got the exact same kit and it works exceptionally well. I have about 70-80 km on the engine and never had any problems. I run it on a 2% oil mix and it runs great and start real easy. Fun little thing to have.

You should do more stuff like this. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of the tool testing you do when it's company vs company. This however is awesome for a whole different set of reasons.
Yes, this was really fun to watch.
I've built a few of these. If you build a bicycle for the engine it's awesome if you are just trying to slap it on a random bike you'll get mixed results. Best one I have found for an engine kit is the older Schwinn Heavy Duty. They have much thicker spokes, better bearings, and beefier frame that fits the engine perfectly and the bike is a much better quality than the Walmart bike stuff you get nowadays.

Weight is your enemy when building these things tho..may I recommend starting with a high quality bike like a giant talon or a specialized hardrock/expedition

Kobain Back in the day I put a 9HP aluminum block Briggs on a 3 speed bike. It could easily do 60MPH in 2nd gear. Never wound out 3rd. Too scared from the front wheel shaking. 😱😫😩

Having assembled one on a Huffy frame I say they are more than worth it. I have been crusizing on mine for three years with one minor breakdown. I did have to replace a gasket on the exhaust once as well. Build one you will love it!

31 mph max is not bad at all!! Most non-custom ebikes get around 25 mph out of around 1000W motor. Btw that compressed air on the handles was just brilliant! I learned something new, thanks bud!

Yeah worth bearing in mind the 25mph on ebikes is probably not motor-limited but speed-limited due to legal restrictions for unlicensed motor-assisted vehicles, as well as manufacturer wanting to have a guaranteed minimum range. Even a 250W ebike can do 20mph, though it'll be slower on the acceleration. There are kits for removing motor limiters for ebikes out there, a 1000W motor should easily get you 35-40mph depending on your weight/load.
But going much over 40 is just e-motorcycle territory, particularly if you're going on public roads with them.

@@InnuendoXP I would agree as to why they would limit them, they do it on golf carts...lol. A 50cc gasbike weighing 72lbs is pushing it, moving a 150lb man along at 20 mph on level ground, in my experience.
This isn't true, all e-bikes sold in the US are restricted to 25mph. My bafang kit will hit 40mph easy on a mountain bike (1000W 52v), you'd probably get even better performance on a road bike.
(Just FYI 40MPH is too crazy for me, I'm good around 25mph but my dad tops his out)
The gas motors are junk, you'll strip the exhaust from vibrations, and you'll lose compression insanely fast. You constantly have to adjust the throttle depending on your gas level etc.
My boys discovered that heavy-duty tubes were an absolute requirement on their rigs. They constantly blew out the tires, until they learned the difference in tube quality. Then it was "Dad we need $60 per bike for new tubes".
Of course that was un-nerving, but they stopped needing new tubes all the time. And a hell of a-lot less Mother-Love to patch their knees and arms from getting hurt because of a 20 mph blow-out.

You did an excellent job putting that kit together on your bike. I had a little 49cc bike when I was younger. I took it apart and reported the head. It got twice the horsepower. I was really happy with it. If you polish up or down in the opening, it will change the timing. But side ways is good and that was how it gained the power. I watch all of your videos. Even if I don’t have the tool. I still find them interesting. Later

These things are very hit and miss. the only thing i can say for certain is if you buy one of these kits you will learn a lot about fixing small motors.

Ok so I bought one of these about a month ago and here’s what I found out.
Let’s start with cons: installing, the rear sprocket was definetley the hardest part, a lot of fine tuning. It makes it a lot easier for me to take off the stock gearset so I can use another socket with an extension on the other side. Where the chain goes into the engine itself, I found I needed to grind quite a bit of material off the bottom of the enclosure to make the chain fit. That one got me for quite a while. Also, the engine likes to move to the side when the mounts aren’t torqued enough, same with the chain tensioner- I had to weld the chain tensioner to the frame, and it helps a whole lot to put two bolts on the engine mounts, along with some thread locker to avoid them coming loose. Also it helps a lot to max out both tires when you inflate it. Took me through two inner tubes that way. Last thing wrong with the kit is that the fuel shutoff valve physically came out of its enclosure and dumped fuel all over the ground. Yes I mean the actual part that you turn. I was stranded away from home on this one. Last con, the exhaust gasket material is terrible. It wore through so much it actually created a gap and the exhaust was flapping around loose. Allen bolts probably isn’t the best choice for an exhaust port... if you have the ability you should definetley replace these with studs.
Now the pros: it is fast as hell, I’ll be scooping cars on uphills. And it has the same braap braap sound as a dirt bike. And it’s cheap! I definitley recommend, however, you definitely need to be mechanically inclined in order to use this kit. I had to do many fixes in the field.
Overall this thing is the greatest purchase I have ever made. Too young for a drivers liscence, and this thing is way cheaper and better than any car I have seen.
Oh and cold starts can be a bitch at times, let it idle to warm up before you leave.

I have built two of these in the last few years my 1st one had an issue I couldn't fix but it lasted 3 years required no extra work to build it. I built my 2nd one last winter it also required no extra work to install it and have it running. Makes me think either you over thought some things or you installed on the wrong type of frame.
As a 2 stroke bicycle owner, I can confirm this is all true. Especially that last part.

I Used to ride one of these around for years back in 2013. 35mph with a 2 stroke exhaust. I hooked up a buggy for to the bag and that's how I did my grocery and Christmas shopping. Fell once in the snow but it's all part of the fun

I've loved 2 stroke engines since my first Lawn Boy mower back in the 1960's.
At 67 here's a chronicle of my use of 2 stroke engines.
1st model air planes
2nd lawn mowers
3rd dirt bikes
4th boat engines
5th back to lawn equipment
On a side note I bought a 2 stroke Lawn Boy mower back in 1993 (now 2020) and still use it weekly in mowing season and have never had to do any thing to it except put gas in it. I love 2 strokes.

My friend had one, he didn’t know how to work a clutch, was funny watching him ride that thing around town.
I've build 20 of these things literally and A few things to improve the performance on these things are to Waterproof the ignition coil with super glue or something, weld the sprocket onto the axel hub, torque the headbolts to 15 lbs of torque, and add a o-ring to where the carburetor meets the manifold. In addition the engine seems to perform better with two stock gas-tanks united by a T gas-line splitter.

Great test. Great description of how best to put it the kit on the bike the correct way. The motor seemed noisy as two strokes can be. Probably get frowned on if used on bike ways but that would be up to the rider. Thanks for this video, Dan.

There are so cheaply made they're ridiculous
Wrapping pieces of old tire inner tube around the frame before clamping the engine in helps the vibration issue quite a bit. Doing this for any place a mount to the bike's frame is needed really makes a difference.

In the mid 1960s I was handed down a French cycle, heavy, with a two-stroke before the handle bars. One started it and then lowered the friction wheel drive. It was difficult to avoid destroying the tyre as one levered the running motor down as there was no clutch.

I bought the 80cc kit about 9 yrs ago & it was excellent. I had transport to a job which was about 15 miles from my home when I didn't own a car at the time. My biggest life hack for these set ups if it's used as vital transport (work etc) is to buy the Kevlar armoured tyres & the thorn resistant inner tubes. I rode that bike with 3 nails still stuck in the tyre for nearly 2wks (experiment) & had no issues. The tyres & tubes cost abit but they are well worth it compared to repairing punctures & maybe being late for work.

Even better are foam-filled tires, if you can find them. They do exist, but they're not very popular because they add a lot of rotating mass. That doesn't matter when you have an engine to help you move the bike, though.
But the bike is for the police like a regular bicycle or do I have to make the driving license?
Edit: I have read about the laws here in Italy and you need a driving license, registration plate and to pay taxes. Italy is expensive

Ah man. That trick with the compressed air to remove the hand grips was great. I just replaced the grips on my wife's Schwinn and had to cut them off with box cutters! This tip is one week late! LOL!
Helps if you have a one of the dust blower attachments that has a small tube on it, you can flatten it and get under grips really easily.

I have one of these and love it :) It was a challenge getting the chain and sprocket aligned perfectly, and the tensioner is a pos lol. But all and all worth the +$100. I had to get the 50cc version in order to not require insurance

Watched this 3 years ago to learn how to get one built and still have that one that works great to this day. Sure is a fun kit and looking to build another one soon! Only two things i find an issue about the kit is that the carbs they come with are not very reliable and I’ve had two heads crack. But hey it’s not that pricey so i enjoy it for what it is!! I have a bike kit on my bicycle since october. Only problem was the tensioner. It cost US$99. I have even done some modifications like lowering the head, made an expansion chamber, polished the exhaust and intake ports. So far, the engine is running strong!

Do you want to polish the intake? It probably doesn't make a ton of difference but I heard you want a little turbulence in there. What was wrong with the tensioner?

i have one. big problem is that you need to hold the clutch in all the time if you want to pedal like a normal bike and engine off. Will tear the cluth on any eninge.
Best would be if you could have something that totally separated the engine from the bike. Like a quick way of take the chain off so it wont be any resistence at all from the engine.
