I see this video is getting a lot of attention! Glad to see you all are enjoying my motorized bike vids :) I just want to clear the air though by emphasizing that this bike is by no means legal, and the only way to make it semi-legal is to get a full motorcycle license and do some tweaks to register it as a motorcycle! I know many of you are asking questions about laws or other statements, but this is just meant to be a video encouraging everyone to be safe and still have fun! I don't ride on main roads or anywhere that would be of potential danger, it is just a fun hobby with a top speed of 38 mph for some fun neighborhood and mountain road rides! I would suggest the same to all of you who are into the hobby to make sure to do your research and be legal before doing regular riding, and not just trust the comments or this video for any legal advice! Happy riding!

That warms my heart. The police seem to be good to me as a big sport bike rider in AZ. No speeding tickets, daily commuter for years. But I am looking to build one of these monstrosities for the fun of it. Also, I remember the good ol days when I started on 50cc scooters and mopeds in CT and never had insurance or anything. It felt off the books, free. Looking to get into that feeling again. Even though I have never received a speeding ticket on my 954rr or any other sport bike or cruiser I have owned, I always have that nagging wonder/worry. Just want to live and let live. And I love how these bikes are not about optimization and number crunching and being the best and going as fast and taking the turn just right... etc etc... its the fun of it. Crazy, for the price of my new sprockets/chain for my bike I just bought, I can build one of these motorized bicycles lol. Looking forward to it.

Sweet bike with a gnarly engine.
I rode an 80cc for 2 years in Louisiana.
I had butterfly bars and a banana seat with saddlebags from a Harley on it .
I got pulled over several times because my motorcycle didn't have a license plate . I had to point it out that it was a bicycle with an engine .
I wasn't riding stupid yet I had several stupid encounters . I even called 911 one time on the cops for detaining me and infringing on my 4th ammendment right .
I did 40 mile round trips from the county to the city . It was my only source of transportation due to an injury that disabled me . The thing saved my life yet I was happy to get a motorcycle again . A bicycle with an engine is not a motorcycle. I still loved it as it reminded me of how a motorcycle came to be.
I love your setup and wish you continued peace with minimal breakdowns.

@bencarano I pretty much had the same experience here in Tulsa Oklahoma. Years ago when my license was suspended, I had to check for an alternate way to get back-and-forth to work. It was starting to turn fall and winter, and there was no way in hell that I was gonna be walking 12 miles back-and-forth to work in the snow! That’s when I checked into making motorized bicycles. The first thing I did was to check to see what the state laws said about the legality of motorized bicycles. It turns out that in the state of Oklahoma, a bicycle With a motor of less than 80cc is considered a “motor assisted bicycle”! And according to state law, it did not require a driver’s license, did not require being tagged and registered, and was not required to be insured! And as long as I kept it under 35 miles an hour, no one would bother me about it! I couldn’t believe it, so I went around and asked at least 10 police officers, six sheriff deputies and two highway patrolman… And they all gave me the same answer that if I built this from a regular bike to these limits and specifications, it would be completely street legal, and so would I! In another post in your video, someone said that this would not be “reliable transportation”, But seeing that I got around with this bike for two years until my license was reinstated… I beg to differ! And the bonus of getting around on this bike 5 times a week was I was only spending a gallon a week on gas! So if I bought 10 gallons of gas, I was good for 2 1/2 months! I only had trouble with one cop in a neighboring town, she had ordered me to get my bike off the road and ride it on the sidewalk. When I refused, she called additional officers and her watch captain out to the scene, which I informed the watch captain before he decided to try to write me a ticket, to go back into his squad car and pull up on his computer for “motor assisted bicycle.” After he went to his car and looked up what I told him about, 10 minutes later he came back and Berated that officer for pulling me over in the first place and making a fuss. He further informed that officer that she was ordering me to violate the law by trying to make me ride my bike on the sidewalk when it could exceed 25 miles an hour. He then turned me and said: “Sir, I apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for bringing this law to my attention… Please proceed on your way.” But even though my license is now reinstated, and I’m back to driving my car, I still have my bike and will never get rid of it! To those of you who are reading this out there that are still riding or thinking about starting to ride, Check your state motoring laws! if you know them well, it can and will only help you in the end! Trust me, I KNOW!

Been riding non motorized well over 30 years, and the big law seems merely never to obstruct traffic. I do not want to create more work for any cop, and a lot of cops grew up in the motor culture, and some are still probably in it. The big problem with these things are kids who want to do break neck riding, which any good cop would want to shut down immediately. Insanity is always a problem to any society. Ride sane, ride safe; enjoy life. A million more laws to micro manage us will never make any of us even one little bit safer. That 120 Honda is a sweet piece of steel. You can not do better than Honda for small engines. The stability of their torque is the very best.

@@benjaminlutz5075 And as long as you're obeying the law, police aren't going to "want" or "try" to pull you over for something. However, honestly, my main concern when I go by a cop is that they will see that I don't have a rear license plate, which is NOT required, and so they might pull me over in the false pretense that I'm on a motorcycle. But if they really have a good look at me, I'm obviously on a beach cruiser bicycle with an engine LOL. But maybe they just happen to see the tail end of me go past, and they think to themselves "they don't have a license plate/light". That's really my ONLY concern about getting pulled over.
EDIT: When I do see police, I make extra intention to go below the speed limit AND fake pedal (I pedal and go through the motions but don't actually carry a load LOL). That way they will immediately see that I'm a cyclist regardless of if they notice the engine.

Where I live, mopeds used to classified as bicycles, so long as they were limited to 49cc and 20 mph. Then, i don't know if the speed restriction was relaxed, but kids started riding mopeds and scooters capable of 35mph or more, and having bad accidents. So several years ago, they pssed a moped registration law that requires title, tags and helmets, but strangely no insurance! However, there is an exemption for mopeds that are limited to 25 mph. I have a couple of the old-shool, below 25 mph mopeds. I guess if I start riding them, I'll need to carry a copy of the regulations on me!

Not sure if it's just me but the way your bike seems to handle by watching the video it seems like it's top heavy and I'm sure that it is with the added weight of the engine and torque converter up in the frame like it is but do you notice a big difference in the handling like it is? Also, I really like the torque converter idea, do you feel like the gearing is good where it's at or do you feel like it could use more low end torque or top end speed? There's supposed to be a way to adjust those torque converters to deliver a bit more torque or a bit more speed but I've never done it before, there's videos about it. I really like this idea though. 👍

I've gotten pulled over ONCE. He then walked up and was like "oh, it's a motorized bicycle". In Illinois, you are required to be at least 16 years old to ride a motorized bicycle, but you're not required to have a driver's license, let alone have one on you. I didn't have any identification. The officer asked if I could give him my name, address, and social security number, which I did, [keep in mind, the ONLY thing he's doing at this point is checking with dispatch to see if I have any warrants for my arrest, which I didn't]. He said he pulled me over because he thought I was riding on the sidewalk [I wasn't; I was riding on the edge of the paved road] and also because I didn't have a tail light [this was at night]. Okay, true, I did NOT have a working tail light. I had one, and lo and behold, the battery was dying and it was just BARELY flickering if you looked at it closely. He saw that I obviously just needed to change the battery, and he let me go.
Really, for a motorized bicyclist all it comes down to is this and you'll be fine: don't speed, have working headlights [even in the daytime JUST IN CASE they confuse you for a moped or motorcycle etc], have a tail light, stop at stop signs (or just roll through it and fake pedal ;) ), and all around just obey traffic laws. Oh, also wear a helmet, which may or may not be law (not in Illinois, though motorcyclists must wear protective glasses or face shield by law yet no helmet required] but wearing a helmet is safer anyway (I have a motorcycle helmet that exceeds DOT standards, and I love it actually). Police aren't going to pull you over unless you're doing something to give them a reason to pull you over.

    • @adamcolbertmusic
      @adamcolbertmusic ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sorry for a morbid comment, but it's always a good idea to carry a driver's license GOD FORBID you wreck or even die and a first responder is trying to identify your body. I'm just saying. It's also a good reason to wear a green reflective safety vest as I do (among other good reasons for personal safety and so that other drivers will hopefully see you which often they still don't because they're distracted on their phones unfortunately). Again.. HEAVEN FORBID that I crash and I'm laying in a ditch unconscious, but if I have a green reflective vest on then a passerby is much more likely to see my body and call 911. SAFETY FIRST!!! I see signs in people's front yards, "start seeing motorcycles", but as any motorized cyclist, we should make it our priority TO BE SEEN!!! Also BEING HEARD with a loud exhaust is good, but only during the daytime, because you should be courteous of people sleeping as well.

You are correct - do not speed ! I saw your muffler and it is not a real muffler it is a SPARK arrestor mostly . LENGTH your exhaust pipe from where it is now with a steel flex pipe . Those flex pipes are GREAT for eating noise and lowering the D.B. noise level. I lost the muffler off of an old van of mine in the city on a Friday after work and had a2 hour drive to get home. Stopped at a muffler shop and they were booked up with no time. So I bought about 10 feet of flex pipe and 4 or 5 muffler clamps . Clamped the flex pipe to my broken exhaust pipe put a couple more clamps a few feet apart from each other and hung the flex pipe from the frame and drove home... I was so surprised on how quite it made the van from no muffler to a long flex pipe... I'm 67 now and was about 19 when I did this.... I was so glad to see you have some kind of disk break on your bike. Your bike is heavier and faster now and needs to stop FASTER than before.

"They" might not bother you. I did some crazy stuff as a teen, some time ago now. What did I have to lose?! As time goes on and I became an adult I had a lot more to lose. Any ticket you get is driving an unregistered, non compliant motor vehicle. Points go on your driver's license. That costs. Riding in a bike lane is riding a motor vehicle in the bike lane, same charge as riding a Harley in the bike lane. If by chance you hit someone you will get sued for everything you have. Heaven forbid you hurt someone, you could be paying for that for years. It would be classed a crime that can carry a jail sentence. Accidents happen everyday to people doing everything right. And the police can confiscate the bike. It can't be registered because it's a non DOT complaint motor vehicle. Without DOT certification, you can't get a VIN, without a VIN you can't register the vehicle. Legal mopeds are DOT certified. Not trying to be a downer, I do think it's cool, but given my position I am correct in everything I'm telling you. You and your viewers should have all the facts.
    Best of luck.

But I always keep the pedals turning Wave to people and if someone's on the sidewalk. I move way over move off the sidewalk until The pedestrian is gone. I don't ride in traffic because I'm a motorized bicycle and riding in traffic is very dangerous. If I see police I always cut my engine off. And going across streets if police are around I cut the engine off. Or if traffic is busy I cut the engine off and walk the bike across. I ride on trails and sidewalks. I have since the phat moto bike come out in the beginning of 2019. I'm sure of all the miles I've rode on mine if I was wide open. I'm sure they would say something.

I put a 80cc 2 stroke on my bike. I bought it to ride it to work on nice days because at the time I didn't have a vehicle. I got the proper gear and lights on it. The only thing I get is confused looks when I ride past people. I haven't done bigger engines yet. But I eventually might.

They are the same i suppose but the 4-stroke is just a lower pitch rumble so it sounds quieter most of the time

UK laws work kinda different, and the easiest way to think about it is that any motorised vehicle is a tank, unless it can drop down a catagory and then your a articulated wagon, then a 12t van, then a 7, 5, 3.5, car. large motorcycle, small motorcycle, moped, low power moped, bicycle. as for electric they go in the catagorys above but with an E in the name...
what your riding would end up in maybe in the moped class, which requires a licence, insurance, dot/e approved lighting, 'road tax', a yearly safety test, real motorcycle helmet, real motorcycle tyres, and with 2-6 points per offence you would soon hit 12 and have your licence get suspended for a year. and then any future insurance company would smile when you try to insure something...
i'm just comeing to the end of building an e-moped as i'm in a gridlocked 30mph city so it made sense to build a slower bike as the insurance and tax will be cheaper overall. but something bigger is in planning.....

Why not use a larger scooter muffler? That one you have looks rather primitive like from a lawn mower. I also used to put about an 8-10 inch length of high temp silicone tubing from auto parts store on the outlet from my go-ped exhaust's muffler. It greatly reduced the harsh exhaust note especially at low RPM's. Something about the silicone rubber baffled the sound waves, I guess. A piece of bailing wire kept the tubing from flopping around much.

In most States and different insurance companies. if you can't license it you can't insure it. However insurance is usually very cheap I pay $15 a year for my scooter.

Many years ago I was pedaling my 49 cc moped on the venice beach bicycle path with the motor off, and a police officer gave me a ticked for riding a motorized bicycle on the bike path. I argued that I was using it as a bicycle, and the officer said it doesn't matter since it had a motor on it. Fortunately the young cop never showed up in court to challenge me, so the judge dismissed the ticket. The bottom line is that enforcement depends on the individual cop.

These things are all the rave over here in Indo. They use a regular 150cc motorcycle engine in an oversize tube bicycle frame with phat tires
    ..but no peddles

I’ve built several of these high class motorized bikes. You’ve got a well designed and built machine. If you’ve got the original Honda muffler, you might to reconfigure the input on muffler and have a nice quiet engine.

Here in Florida you have to pay a fee to get a VIN for it, then a fee to get it Titled, Insurance, then a BIG fee to get a Plate for it, and when it's all said and done you could have probably built 4 bikes with what you would've spent to do all that. Mine's a YD100 powered Gasbike, and to this point I haven't been bothered by anybody in an Official status, so I just wave when I see a Sheriff, and they usually wave back...

You don’t need insurance, but it has to be under 49cc.
