    Beautiful knife. I really appreciate you talking about your "mistakes" and changes in your design for it during the process.
    Too many people talk about their work like everything always goes exactly how they intended it to from the start. Anyone who has done any type of craft work knows that's not how things really go.

    I very much enjoyed this build. I like how you found new meaning for that fourth piece of steel in the hand guard. The materials came together, very very well in this knife, and I know you wanted to use gold, but I knew when you held all the pieces together, that silver was the perfect match for this particular knife.
    I appreciate your way of filming. I like the fast motion. I also appreciate that your short sweet to the point with comments, It leaves more attention to watch your skill. Thank you.

      An idea for highlighting/pinstriping, let’s look at the ordinary highlighted pommel, the highlight would in circle the pommel like a belt, what if you used dots alternatively?
      Idea: In your Damascus steel, is it possible to incorporate Not just one highlighted layer but let’s say three? I’m thinking gold, copper, and I think silver closest to the knife edge?

    Really appreciate that you include "simple" mistakes like forgetting to change the drill direction. I think it really adds to the idea of craftmanship as a constant process, not just a finished skill.
    As someone who can nothing on metalwork, why don't you go straight to the surface grinder when removing the grooves from the twist? Less control of material removal?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always say, these are a series of problems to solve. As for the surface grinder, I was taking off the majority of the scale first so it “stuck” well to the magnets. Thanks for watching.

  • @Dutch2905
    @Dutch2905 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful final product. I like when the first inlay didn't work you ended up doing a groove AND then 2 inlays. Its like you gave yourself 3 times the work to get the perfect look and I can only respect that level of craftmanship.

    Another nice looking knife and a great build video. On the warping issue : i also used to grind in the bevels mostly before heat treat. On longer and or thinner blades there always high risk of warping.....sometimes its very hard to correct those warps. Now i do not longer grind in bevels....the only thing i do is to make the knife blank flat and straight before heat treat and leaving a lot more thickness. Never had any warps after that. There's another advantage in grinding in the bevels after heat treat. On thinner knives where the bevels are ground after heat treat you do not have the risk of decarb as much and thus there less chance of losing some contrast after etching. I am sure as you make a lot of damascus blades you also experienced some uneven etching on some blades....less dark/dull spots on bigger sized blades or the cutting edge less black/contrast than the back. That is also caused by decarb and uneven cooling on blades that had the bevels grind close to almost the final thickness before heat treat. I rather waste an extra sanding belt to grind a hardened and tempered blade to final shape...than risking warping, decarb and even cracks on thin and or longer blades with the bevels ground in before heat treat.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I agree that works most times, with 10xx steels you need to be careful you are getting full hardness since those are shallow hardening steels. That’s the main reason I like to do pre-heat my rest grinding. I very rarely have warps or decarb issues. If you’re not testing with an hrc tester with no pre-HT grinding, you should get one. Thanks for watching.

    • @HoutmeyersP
      @HoutmeyersP ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TyrellKnifeworks Ok those steels are maybe shallow hardening......but i very much doubt they would not fully harden if they are only 0.25 to 0.3 " thick blanks. That thickness before heat treat would be sufficient for most knives. But i do not know for sure because over here in Europe the 10xx steels are less common. Over here its mostly O1 and O2 for damascus blades combined with 15n20 or 45NiCrMo16 ( 3.5-4% NI). Those steels if i use them up to 1/8 inch thick big kitchenknives i can even plate quench ( copper quench plates) like you would do with stainless and get fully hardened without the chance of warping. I do not have a rockwell tester....but i use hardness testfiles. I can get those quench plate hardened kitchen knives as hard as using quenching oil. Maybe for the 10xx steels its different.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HoutmeyersP not being argumentative, but you ARE using 10xx steel if you’re using 15n20, it is 1080 with 2% nickel added. Which has a completely different heat treat than O1. It’s really not a good combination for Damascus for that reason. I would advise you get a Rockwell tester and then you’ll know for sure.

    • @HoutmeyersP
      @HoutmeyersP ปีที่แล้ว

      There's absolutely no problem using O1 and 15n20 or 1.2767 for a damascus blade......even if both steels have a different heat treat. My blades are as good as any other hobbyist forged damascus. Look up any factory produced stainless or carbon damascus ....they all use steels that do not have the exact same heat treat.If you doubt that the mixed steels do not get a perfect heat treat when combined....i would than also skip using copper , nickel and gold or other metals in a blade. Its also really not a good thing putting any in steel for a few dozen times in and out a high heat propane forge....so if you want perfection skip the whole damascus forging process all together.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HoutmeyersP if you’re a hobbyist heat treating in a forge, it probably doesn’t matter. But O1 and 15n20 DO have different heat treats. They don’t even use the same quenchant. You can reference Knife Engineering if you want to look it up. As for copper or other items, those are never on the cutting edge. You’re just heat treating your core steel. This sound like a touchy subject for you, but I’m just giving you facts.

    You'd mentioned that with the twists that you loos a lot of material grinding out the the twists. Have you tried to rounding that square bar up and then twisting? I've done it and had mixed results. I hope this finds you and your family well, and as always, very well done, Sir.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks

    The amount of manual work you have to do to squash all those lines into place without weird cutouts just elevates this piece even more.
    Since I don't know the mechanics behind it, would it be possible to do something to remove the lines between the wielded pieces?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1
