Thank you Mark for saving all these memories. 20+ years ago people may have thought it was odd you recording all these things, but I really appreciate it now.
I worked at K-mart Willowbrook Illinois store 4459 from 1994 to 1996. I absolutely loved it. It was my first job. For some unbeknownst to me reason, I was always concerned about the company's well being. I was only 16 in 1994, but always had a sense of loyalty to that old store. K-mart 4459, we will always miss you. RIP 4459....1972-2013.
Mark Davis, thank you very much for posting this on TH-cam. I worked at store 4459 in Willowbrook Il from 1994 to 1996. This brings back great memories. My store was one of the retro 70s stores as well. It was built in 1972. Sadly, she closed in 2013.
What a plethora a memories! Especially down at the end. Like I posted on your video of the Kmart radio tapes, I was an independent merchandiser in the Kern County, CA area for 13 years around the same time you were moving up the ladder and relocating. I've set many a Kmart aisle in my years but the most memorable was the one in Taft. This was when they were putting in the Pantry. I had a great relationship with the Store Manager, Brian Hamilton as I'd worked with him at the store on 34th Street in Bakersfield. He asked me if I would like to help reset. Dummy me, I thought he was asking all the independent merchandisers that did resets in the store. And he was, however, I was the only one naive enough to say yes. I found that out on the first day and too late to backout. :) Those were long days as I worked my 8 with Kmart and then because it was a remodel and the company I merchandised for was P&G and others, I still had other work to do from 2:30 to 10. It took 3 months and was extremely rewarding. We won't talk about the callous on my foot that my sister had to take a Dremel to. :) Thanks for sharing Mark.
That Kmart Radio jingle is going to be stuck in my head for a long time. Thanks for the earworm. It's nice to see that fantastic 1962 logo again. Not a fan of the 1990 or current logo. It's a shame to see this once proud company die a slow, painful death.
The pre 1990 cafeterias, the food was excellent. The later ones were good too, they however were geared toward fast food. They were called "Eatery Express" for the then new hustle and bustle lifestyle. I never left the store for my lunch breaks. I knew all the cooks in the eatery, they always made great food. I'm talking about you, Else, Kim, and Molly!
It was so interesting to watch this montage. I worked at store 3734 in high school and college from 96-2000. I had many of the items and used many of the forms while I was a Service Team Supervisor.
2 weeks at Venture? Well, we obviously know where you were happiest! This was a fun trip down what obviously was a great time in your life. And the sound bytes are great - I will need to take a look at those videos!!!
Great memories from my days at Kmart. Began as a mgr. trainee in Westerville, Ohio in 1979 and worked for the company for nearly six years. Last store I worked at was in Macedonia, Ohio
Sad my local Kmart closed I remember going In there and there was nothing good in there but I got a lot of stuff though. Also I was born in Westerville and always stayed in Columbus since
Quite cool to see the items, as each evokes great memories of my 31 yrs with the company. Started as a 16 yr old in 4257 Middleburg Hts OH, and went through too many positions, stores, and districts to count. What do you miss after that many years? The people of course. Thanks Mark for the post- I appreciated every second of it.
Thanks for the memories of great times at Kmart; my mother used to shop there for our school clothes so much that my classmates would call me bogo. It is still fun to shop at Kmart, but they need to get a bigger electronics department.
+Mark Davis I have filmed several Kmarts on my page here in Ohio. Come have a look. But anyways they are just closing stores as their leases expire. The last 2 Kmarts in the Dayton, Ohio region both of their leases expire next March and neither is expected to survive. They just recently closed down 3 more stores in my area. They are on their last legs, they barely have any stores left within driving distance of company headquarters, which is anywhere around the Great Lakes region. Their last strongholds besides Chicago within driving distance of company headquarters Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They just closed several stores in Pittsburgh and they only got around 4 stores left around Cleveland. Louisville, Kentucky only 1 area store left. Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Toledo, Ohio only 2 area stores left in each of those markets. Wisconsin in Milwaukee only 2 area stores and in the state of Wisconsin not even 15 stores left in the state. Indiana, they pulled out of Fort Wayne completely a few years ago. That was the first market that they completely abandoned within driving distance of company headquarters. They closed their last store in Terre Haute, they only got 1 store left in Bloomington, Indiana. 3 area stores left in Indianapolis, 2 left in South Bend, Indiana. So that is a lot of major markets within driving distance of company headquarters where they barely exist anymore. They cannot last much longer
oooohhh the pain! My Kmart is closing i work for! 😢. It makes me so mad they keep closing them. The people i work with were like family to me. Great people. THANKS A LOT EDDIE LAMPERT! You've ruined the Kmart Corporation! He is 100% responsible for the failure of this once proud American iconic retail company. He had no business merging Sears and making that god-awful Shop Your Way Rewards program its too complicated and a dozen other issues it caused and it sabotage our profit margin that's why the prices were so high. He SHOULD HAVE invested in the stores kept the blue light specials going and most importantly keep the layaway advertising going. Kmart had so much to offer. All of it GONE, it would have survived if he had nothing to do with Kmart that's why I hate hedge funds they ruin everything. I hope he goes to jail for deliberately sabotaging the company! i wish i had the money to save them. LONG LIVE KMART. Please don't die we need you 🙏
Sadly I had wished you caught a video retrospective of the two Kmart stores in Joliet and New Lenox, IL when they folded up in 2016? I can't even remember now. Maybe as poetic justice videotape the final days of Sears at Louis Joliet Mall. People in this economy can shop at Kmart not Sears?
Wow you helped open that store and worked there an entire decade. It's like raising a child. That must of been painful to see your store closing. The aisles full of memories now just faded.
I just got wind of something rather tragic. The original K-mart store in Garden City Michigan is closing. The store opened 3-1-1962, so, for her 55th birthday, what are they doing? Closing her down. That just kills me. I often go by the store in Springfield, IL on Clear Lake ave. That one was also one of the first K-mart stores to open, April 8, 1963. If they closed Garden City, Springfield IL on Clear Lake ave is a sitting duck. Almost 54 years. Hold on, Springfield!
Kmart is struggling to survive. They keep closing stores every year and in Jan 2017 announced the closing of 78 stores. My local Kmart opened in 1981 and closed in December 2014. They had a Caesars Pizza inside. Remember Attention Kmart Blue light shoppers? Everyone shops at Walmart or Target these days or online.
This video was great! Mark you have been Mr Kmart. How long did you with for them? The editing on this video is cool, made me sad at the end seeing the liquidation signs. I loved Kmart back in the 70's, 80's , and 90's.
My wife still has her I love Kmart pin, her employee badge, and a turquoise smock she wore during her employment in the mid-70s while she was going to college. Yep, her smock still fits her (actually it's a bit big).
I miss Kmart. Not the Kmart if today, but the Kmart of the 60’s and 70’s. As a kid I could always be found in the toy and/or electronics departments. Unfortunately the chain just isn’t going to make it. Liquidation I expect is around the next corner. Poor management is to blame.
I do too. It may seem difficult to explain to most of the younger participants here, who only knew it as "just another store" (which it had indeed become by about the mid-80's or so), but back in its heyday Kmart actually was what I'd call a great store, obviously due to its having reasonably priced inventory (not always the "best" but consistently fair), though I think mainly because it treated its customers with respect (that definitely created loyalty with my family). My gut feeling is that Kmart's upper management simply didn't know, or maybe didn't care, what its brand value was (IMHO, Kmart's niche was no frills but functional), so as a result instead of moving with the times, Kmart got too caught up in chasing trends (i.e. celebrity spokespersons, fast food vs. the Kmart cafeteria), doing merger acquisitions (i.e. Waldenbooks, Sports Authority, Sears, etc.), and even changing its classic logo (never liked either the 90's design or any of the later "Big K" iterations). In the process, Kmart lost its identity, and while I only stopped shopping there, some of the stories I've read about long-time employees and local store managers losing their jobs (in some cases even their pensions!), are absolutely heartbreaking, but sadly not too surprising. I'll paraphrase what I've said in other discussions, which is that Kmart may now be history, but at least we still have the muzak! :)
I love the vintage kmarts. Now i live right next to a Kmart. Some of the big changes, taking Electronics out. TVs are getting phased out. A wonderful retail giant hopethey recover.
Thanks for the video. I am a younger than most of the stuff you showed. I thought it was really cool. Id like to get a better look at the training materials you showed.

Me too--I purchased at the North Hollywood Kmart for $11.99 a Super 8mm sound 200' Castle Films digest print of the original Frankenstein movie. Other titles they had available included the Marx Brothers, cartoons and Elvis Presley. It was exciting just to find Super 8 sound films at Kmart during the early 1980's--I was very impressed. Still have the film.
This is like watching something about a company long out of business. It's hard to remember that Kmart still exists. Too bad Eddie is going to sink Sears too.
Kmart is not totally out of business, they still have some remaining in select markets in the USA. Also, there is a separate and very successful Kmart found in Australia and New Zealand. Here are all of the non liquidating Kmarts in the USA and US territories as of September 26, 2021: 1. Tauming, Guam 2. Grass Valley, California 3. Key West, Florida 4. Miami, Florida 5. Hamilton, Montana 6. Avenel, New Jersey 7. Westwood, New Jersey 8. Bridgehampton, New York 9. Bronx, New York (The Shops at Bruckner) 10. Bronx, New York (Bay Plaza Shopping Center) 11. Hato Rey, Puerto Rico 12. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands (Sunshine Mall) 13. St. Croix, U.S Virgin Islands (Sunny Isle Shopping Center) 14. St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (Tutu Park Mall) 15. St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (Lockhart Gardens Shopping Center). Liquidating Kmarts that are temporarily still open are 1. White Plains, New York 2. Brooklyn, New York (located on the ground floor of a liquidating Sears) and 3. Marshall, Michigan
Of all the great items you showed the only thing missing was a K-Note collect 200 points worth get a cash card. #keepkmartalive # tryingtomakeitto40years
Kmart Canada is gone... Kmart Czech Republic is gone... Kmart Slovakia is gone... Super Kmart Mexico is gone... Kmart U.S. is dying... Kmart Australia is doing well... Kmart New Zealand is also doing well...
no it wasn't, Target was based in Minnesota, and a subsidiary of Dayton-Hudson, Venture was based here in St Louis, originally part of the May Company (same owners who owned Famous-Barr). It was started by May using former Target employees, but was never affiliated with Target.
Thank you Mark for saving all these memories. 20+ years ago people may have thought it was odd you recording all these things, but I really appreciate it now.
Still miss Kmart so much that I wish more people would've saved this place

Mark's Journey Kmart Australia uses a modified version of the 1962 logo.
Right I hated that big red K and mart written in white script too
I always loved the big red "K" and blue "mart" logo on the buildings and signs

Lol Kmart was THE place we took to get all of our film developed when I was a kid!

Great to have these recordings here, given the pending closing of the last large K-Mart. Thank you!
I miss Kmart so much
Worked in a store in the early 90s that was pretty much a dead ringer for the first store pics in this video. Brought back a lot of memories.
It was so interesting to watch this montage. I worked at store 3734 in high school and college from 96-2000. I had many of the items and used many of the forms while I was a Service Team Supervisor.

Crazy how much the retail chain has changed. Our family's shopped the Bridgeview location since before I was born and now I work there!
Vendetta162X Bridgeview K-mart was built and opened in 1971.
Brings back a lot of good memories. Worked for Kmart for 34 years starting as sales associate to District Manager.

Yes it was a great place to shop! Love Kmart....miss Kmart!
Spent 30 years there, have had other jobs since, but I was always a Kmart person. Loved your video.
Thanks Mark. Great memories. I worked for them around this time period too.
