Yeah, I guess I'm not too surprised that people still hated Muzak and preferred real songs back then. But I like it because it's a nice change of pace. I feel like I hear the same 4 or 5 pop songs out in public. It's nice to just hear music, no words, just instruments. Plus I feel like there's a lot of care put into each composition. That's why I love Environmental Muzak/WTC Plaza Muzak so much (Dancing Queen and Every Breath You Take are so good!) I really wish more places incorporated it.
It's December 1989. Your grandma has brought you to Kmart to get her Christmas shopping done. She's turned you loose with a five dollar bill. The world is still exciting. The toy isle is still mesmerizing. This soundtrack is playing. You don't really even notice that you kinda like it. You have no idea that one day you'll be so nostalgic for this feeling that it hurts. Now, fast forward to 2020, the world is in flames. Everyone is jaded and unhappy. And Kmart barely even exists anymore. The world needs to go back to the Kmart Era....

Shannonm75 I know it's so sad. While I do shop online I also love stores still and it's stinks that places like malls for example are becoming obsolete because of online shopping. I remember when I was a kid I would go shopping with my mom and I didn't know what kind of music this was but I loved going to the store because I loved the music.
Kmart was the place to be! It was where my family and I would go for essentially everything. Back in the 80's, Kmart had clothing, electronics, a pet shop (i.e. goldfish, hamsters), a jewelry corner, an ice cream counter (my favorites being bubble gum, pistachio, and chocolate), a cafeteria (They had the best Salsbury steak with mushroom gravy!), and, of course, my favorite toys around (i.e. G.I. Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, and Silverhawks)! Bring Kmart back now! Christmas is here! We need you now!
Our K mart had caramel corn and cotton candy instead of ice cream. You could smell it from the snack bar the moment you walked in. To this day, when I hear music like this I immediately remember it.
+MorningMary67 The one by where I live is surprisingly pretty busy. I went in there awhile back and nothing had changed since 1983. It was surreal. It stunk to high heaven and there might have been mold growing on the ceiling. I actually went in there for a can of soup and some sticky liquid had exploded all over the display. I took the cans to the front and customer service was like "whatever".
+Kendrick Jacobson Yeah, the one in my area is very dated. I was there yesterday and was thinking to myself that it hasn't changed very much since it first opened. That's awful about the mold, and even more disgusting about the soup display! They don't have many cashiers working at my Kmart and it's usually a slow checkout if you buy anything.
BTW, my Kmart just closed it's doors about a month ago. Can't say I didn't see it coming. That store had been there for over 30 years and now it's just sitting there, an empty ugly building. It's kind of sad because even though it wasn't my favorite place, I just got used to it being there. I'm wondering what they will put there now.
i know the one here in Miami on 163 street was once alive back in the 80s up until maybe mid 90s. even had a hot dog stand outside . then it became a super kmart and looks like a dead kmart now. giant space very few employees working there. just deserted. sad!

I'm getting all nostalgic and shit. I'm heading down this weekend 2 attend the closing day of the Sears in Pompano Beach that my mother opened and worked 4 4 / 20 years before retiring. There was an old Kmart across the street that had a grand facade with a huge display window on the second floor facing Federal Highway. Unfortunately that Kmart was closed a couple years ago. I'm 39 years old and can't believe that Sears and Kmart are going away. Online is not the same.
I worked seasonal and liquidation at Kmart #3438 in Avenel, NJ. Today, the 43 year run of said store came to a close. Very rarely do people truly love their job, but I can tell you without any doubt, that I did. I'm gonna miss my Kmart, and the fellow associates who became like family to me.
this is the coolest thing i've ever seen. i love kmart and i still prefer to shop there over other larger chains. kmart is my zen zone. thanks for sharing!
I know this music well. I worked in the apparel department of Kmart in Victoria, Texas from 1985-88. Wow, it was a crazy time then. A lot of VISA fabric thanks to Barbra Mandrel.....Only people 45 and older would get that....slacks in pastel color with the belt.
My local K-Mart opened in a brand-new mall in September of 1989, so this was playing there just a month after it opened. Sadly, the K-Mart is gone and the mall it was attached to is now abandoned and waiting for demolition.
My maternal grandfather had worked at a Kmart when my mom and her siblings were growing up. After he retired from being a welder like my father is still doing to this day (at least until my father retires himself), my grandfather would work at the Walmart in Mayfield, Kentucky as a door greeter, something elderly folks would do. Now listening to this track brings tears to my eyes, and it's not just because Kmart is gone, but about a year ago, a tornado hit Western Kentucky, and one of the places it hit was Mayfield...the twister destroyed my grandparents' home and also killed my grandfather.
