      @Egmont I agree about the rose colored glasses. There was a lot of BS and misery going on. My favorite line, from the worst movie ever (Superman 4) is when Lex Luthor asks Supe, "Is the world gonna vaporize?" And Supe says, "No Luthor...it'll be like it always was...on the brink...with good fighting evil". All that said, I do believe it was a happier place...I've been saying for 10 years now, that smartphones and social media have greatly contributed to the demise of simple mental health and happiness in this country.

    It's amazing how much pride went into their store. That guy in the speech was right, pride drives the business, but when Kmart lost their pride, they lost the customer.

      Kmart was already wandering into confusion by this point, with its purchases of Builder's Square, Waldenbooks etc. and its losing its tech & supply chain edge to Wal-Mart and Target.

    I love the "No applause until the end" policy that was urged. That shows respect for ALL of the members of the staff, and that no single person is worthy of MORE applause than another. It's all about the "Team". As a person of 59 years of age (And having been through a LOT of "corporate politics" through my years in the workforce), This philosophy of true "Team-Building" REALLY needs to be brought back. Kmart was a legendary example of "Pride & Integrity" in the workplace.

    • @burnsie581

    16:30 look at that floor- no carpet. For those who say Big Kmart did nothing more than rearrange shelves and paint, look how there's no carpet on the floor prior to Big Kmart. Look how there are no coolers (Pantry area was added meaning new coolers, meaning new wiring for the coolers). There were also no price scanners, and the Customer Service was brown/black (and couldn't allow for wheelchairs). All these were changed during Big Kmart's renovation. So you can see how much Big Kmart changed, they brought in new fixtures, new paint, carpet, and really did upgrade Kmart.

    • @bL3dbL4k
      @bL3dbL4k 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carpet? C'mon you're pushing it. Who cares.
      I loved K-Mart and would still go there if it was still around me. One thing I noticed at my particular K-Mart. Was they just stopped caring. Place was a mess. Shelves were out of whack. Stuff in random places.
      In the 90s and prior. They were more organized and seem to care more about how the store looked. I prefer the old fashioned look. Just need to keep it clean and presentable.

      I couldn't believe that they couldn't think of anything more creative or inspiring to chant than "Acme Kmart". I was thinking Kmart didn't have to be too innovative back then to be successful. This store probably put scores of mom-and-pop businesses in Acme out of business plus probably some older chain stores (like 5&10 and variety stores).

      It's not as much of a Midwestern accent (that would include states like IA, NE, and MO) as much as it is a "Great Lakes" accent. It encompasses MN (a variation), northern IL, MI, WI, northern OH & IN, and extends into Buffalo and parts of upstate NY. Chris Farley did a great takeoff on the accent in the SNL "Superfans" skits.

    • @davidw3534

      @@lbputzer This makes sense because even folks from Rochester sound like that. (Though on the Canadian side of the lakes the accent is different but some aspects of it are the same.). This is so true! The women in dresses and high heels..80’s hairstyles had a lot to be desired but nevertheless looked very professional..and the men in suits..geez what does it take for a man to wear a suit nowadays..what a different world we live in now.

      The shift in attitudes is so weird. I was just a kid when this video was made, but even I vividly remember in the 80s and 90s how younger people were trying to act so mature and be sophisticated and successful. Now adults are wearing onesies or pajama pants, coloring in coloring books, and you can't tear them away from their video games. I moved out of my parents house at the end of the summer the year I graduated high school. We thought anyone who was living with their parents beyond that were total losers.

      It's fascinating how the same video can illicit completely opposite takeaways. After watching this, I was reminded of exactly how jarringly dreadful 80s fashions were: the women in their football player shoulder pads and big, over processed, frizzy hair and the men in their baggy suits & loud ties. While it's true that more formal professional attire is not as common in the workplace as it was 30 years ago, the folks who still dress up today (finance, etc,) take their cue from the classics of the previous decades (30s-early 60s). The period of the mid-60s to the mid-90s was an era of extremes. The colors, patterns, lapels, tie widths, etc veered from one ugly exaggeration to another. Even though this was the "era of my youth" I'm delighted these styles are dead & gone.

    As of this comment their are 3 K-Marts left in the whole country and 20 full service Sears stores. Walmart invested in their own distribtion centers and purchased their own trucks while maintaining and updating their stores, Kmart dd nothing. This allowed Walmart to operate at less expense than Kmart. This enabled Walmart to beat Kmart's prices up and down the aisles and take their customers.

      it was, it made it past 2001, so it was around in the next century (store opened in 1989, the 20th century, and was there for the 21st century in 2001- technically 2000 was the last year of the 20th century because there was no year zero).

That this GM was a real P.O.S. to work for... and I wouldn't be surprised if he had sexual harassment charges filed on him a few times while he was alive for the misogynistic ego boosts he is forcing these ladies to do while in this video.
