The 96 Rumble match for the title is criminally underrated, it really was the first time you could say "Wow Undertaker can actually wrestle and not just pulverize guys."
Yes it was. Bret was my guy but loved Taker. I obviously knew it was a work at the time just not that clued in on how the work actually works...but I remember not being able to figure it out, I wanted Bret to win but couldn't see how they could have a match where Taker didn't dominate because of his character. The finish stunk, but the match really had me on edge of seat start to finish, had no idea what was going to happen.
I grew up watching Bret Hart. I appreciated the technical prowess he had, and as he got to the mid 90s, his wrestling got better. When he carried British Bulldog through their SummerSlam '92 match and it was still the best match on the card, that shows you the level of talent he had.
I just finished Bret's book and he really let people know how great it was working with Taker. That match in the UK is also talked about. He praised Taker in his great abilities as a worker. They must have had so many moments and road stories they could share if they choose to.
In the ring , not overall, lack mic skills , because that's all he really say . He could of add if you want to be the best beat bret. When it comes the ring I am the king.
The fact the night of the Over The Edge PPV where Owen died, that Taker left the building to fly up to Calgary to be with Bret speaks volumes on the person Mark is, and their friendship. That's why he wasn't at Raw the next night for the tribute show.
That was reported by the torch at the time. I've never seen Bret or Undertaker mention this. It's not in Brets book either. I know having an evil Undertaker on the show wouldn't have been a good look.
The Hitman Hart is one of the most charismatic, fascinating and plain unique characters ever...Not just a legendary in ring worker but also "character"...From the bad ass outfit (pants, jacket, glasses) to his theme entrance music to the way He was walking to the ring to his vastly UNDERRATED Mic Skills...The guy was one of a kind and totally ahead of his time (He made Pink looking cool on a guy). Not forgetting the fact He started as Tag wrestler in the WWF and got insane chemistry with the late Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart (RIP) and delifvered five stars classic as a tag team (like SummerSlam '90 title' match against Demolition)...All in all we've been blessed as fans to have such a versatile and unique pro wrestler like Bret Hart in both 80s & 90s...Absolute ICON.

@@bb-gc2tx you have severe self esteem and anger issues! You know what's actually pathetic? You getting mad at an expression that's used since ever! GTFO kid!
Bret took his art and craft very seriously, it’s why his matches have aged so well … you can watch a Bret Hart match today and still spot the subtle nuances he added to his matches. Everything he did mattered, his selling was incredible, he always looked like he’d been through a war, it mattered to him when he won or lost and no one has ever made a buckle bump (back or chest) look as good as Bret made them.
To me, Bret/Undertaker matches were the most fantastic . Two completely different styles that made magic and brought out things in each other. My two favourite for sure.
I couldn't agree more with Mark on story telling. That is what is MAJORLY lacking with today's talent. They really need to slow it down more, forget doing all the high spots save it for when it's important, and tell a story with your opponent. It not only enhances you but also your opponent. Simply gestures like what they explained in Bret holding his head down after Taker sits up. That denotes frustration after everything you've been trying to do to win the match. We need FAR more of that again because it's vital to getting a program over. Especially, if you've been working with someone for a while. The crowd is to smart now a days to not do that in one's matches.
I remember that 1992 Bret vs Undertaker match. Bret used gravity against Undertaker. Backbreaker, Atomic Drop, Dragon screw leg whip, top rope clothesline to countering the 2nd old School attempt into a top rope arm drag
The Frankenstein Undertaker vs. Bret HART worked so well, you had the believability on both sides, Undertaker being worked down by body part and Undertaker then trying to counter and becoming more and more of a monster as the match would go on. Pure story telling in every way and the UK matches off TV were always truly spectacular. Bret vs. Undertaker, Yokozuna vs. Undertaker and more truly were great. The UK 45 minute match we all had an amazing night and you both got such an amazing standing ovation as you both sold the hell out of everything.
Every time I watch this podcast I just get goose bumps. I'm 42 yrs old and have been an Undertaker fan since his first match against Hogan way back at the 91 Survivor Series. Mark Calaway is the Undertaker. I don't want to meet many celebrities but Mr Calaway is definitely someone I would like to watch a match with and chop it up. Especially my fav match Taker vs HBK the first Hell in a Cell.
Folks talk about mount Rushmore’s in sports, entertainment, wrestling etc etc. I love those conversations since even if you totally TOTALLY disagree with someone on a pick, well it’s still true to them so that’s peace. For me in terms of that Rushmore of wrestling I have a few different lists due to the different aspects of wrestling. In ring, heels, mic work etc etc. on just sheer “I’ll pay my money to see these guys because of their overall body of work” I can’t leave Taker, Shawn or Bret off that list. I can add Harley or Steamboat or Flair, currently Gunther(but too soon for the all time lists) and a few others. But give me Taker, Shawn, Bret and I’m a happy dude. Shawn to me is the greatest blend of offense and selling. Bret is the master tactician, Taker is just the guy you can’t not awe at and/or fear. Thank you all for years of tremendous work
The best match between them in my opinion is the one they had at One Night Only UK. That was awesome. They also had a good match in Madison Square garden in 1992. I’ll always remember the beautiful snap suplex Bret executed on the Undertaker.
Bret was born into a wrestling family and had it drilled into him from as soon as his father felt he could put him in a hold. Wrestling was his family business, his art, practically his religion. When it came to the techniques and ring psychology, how to speak and tell a story with your actions and body in a wrestling match, Bret truly grokked it more than possibly any other person in the business. That's why promos and mic work were never his strongest suits. English was his second language. Wrestling is his first. And he remains my favorite wrestler to this day.
If Bret is considered one the best, Curt Henning has to be up near the top. Both pure technical wrestlers. Another is Kurt Angle. All 3 are at the top of the mountain

A lot of the best wrestlers of that time either like Bret or at least respect him. Flair isn’t a big fan, but he admits he was a great wrestler. The Hitman made so many careers. Even Shawn Michaels’ career was elevated several times by Bret. He was one of the few guys who wanted to work with Shawn early on, going back to the tag team days. He saw the talent. If I’m a wrestling company, I’d hire Bret and Undertaker as both scouts and trainers. Those guys recognize talent and understand psychology. Mark was able to get a Frankenstein gimmick over in multiple eras. Even at a time when everything had to be reality based, Taker was a top guy.
