I enjoyed 1996 & 1997 mainly due to the fact that Bret, Shawn & Taker were the big 3 and carrying the company during that period. WCW was whipping their asses, but Bret, Shawn & Taker delivered some classic matches and rivalries during that time. Sometimes I wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall backstage during that time 😩

From Shawn’s perspective, he had spent his entire career up to 96 being pass over for bigger/stronger guys and only being there to put them over and be their stunt dummy essentially. Bret was older, so HBK spent a lot of time putting him over too, especially when he was champion, a spot shawn wanted. He worked hard for that win at Mania 12. Now that his reign isn’t drawing ratings, it’s makin him stressed and now comes Bret talking about putting him over once again and also being told to let Bret say these things about him and Bret doesn’t seem to have allowed much room for HBK to respond to those disses, so he would essentially shoot on him in response and that pissed Bret off.

Yeah kinda sucked for both shawn and Bret. Obviously WCW was just doing more interesting things but the ratings will always be put on the champ. So you right I'm sure shawn didn't want to just be passed over again, for things that weren't his fault, now that he was champ. Brett definitely got lied to which happens all the time in wrestling but still sucks as the person being lied too. Wish these two would of had a longer rivalry at the top of the card instead of Brett leaving and shawn blowing his back out. That's IF they didn't kill each other back stage lol. A huge part of narrative missing here. In general wrestling ratings across the board were higher in those days than they are today. This is because wrestling rating tend to be made up of three components - 1. Hardcore fans of a particular company. 2. Hardcore wrestling fans in general who watch everything wrestling. 3. The mass audience who just like entertainment and will gravitate toward that, not caring deeply about wrestling generally.
Today, we ONLY have two of those viewerships because wrestling is dead (not just dying - fully dead) to the mass audience. But back then there was very much still that mass audience. And the ratings shift that happened can be almost directly attributable to the emergence of NWO and huge increase in quality of WCW programming at that time, hence the mass audience finding it more entertaining as an overall product. It had pretty much nothing to do with what Shawn, Bret, Undertaker or anyone else was or wasn't doing on the WWF side of things, it was ENTIRELY to do with what was happening with the overall product, and what WCW was doing that was more gritty and felt 'real'. People who use the whole 'champion wasn't drawing' angle tend to be clueless as to the reality of the broader context.

Bret saying Shawn didn't draw, is him conveniently forgetting that from Survivor Series '96 (November, when he returned) to June/July '97 (HBK returning after a 6 month absence ) and up till November '97 (Survivor Series again), he was either there without Shawn (Jan to June/July '97) OR he was there as Champion (primarily August to November '97) - AND RAW WAS STILL LOSING IN THE RATINGS. So you didn't draw either Bret. No one had the answer to the NWO, and that's a fact.
At least in '97 there was a good roster. In '96 Shawn had to pretty much hold it together all by himself. Austin, despite what people think, wasn't a thing until late '96, and not from right after KOTR - it was a slow build. HHH was irrelevant, and so was the Rock until mid/late '97. Taker and Mankind feud was ok. Only Vader and Sid brought hype - albeit periodically, and also, can't believe I'm going to say this, Ahmed. Additionally, in '95 you had Diesel, Razor, Luger, and Bret was there as well. Michael's (with the those mentioned above and the level of help they brought), had to pretty much go against the juggernaut that was the NWO.
Why do people always conveniently forget the above narrative when talking about '96? Yes, it was a terrible year - probably the worst of the 90's, but lets not pretend we don't know why that was so, and further lets not forget what kept the WWF from totally tanking.

Well, I can see Shawn's perspective of not wanting to put Bret over. From 1992 to 1997, it feels like being (somewhat) permanent second fiddle, if Bret won at WrestleMania 13. WM 13 would have worked, if Bret won and he lost at Summer Slam or something (as he suggests). Alternately, Bret should have lost WM 13, and the frustration of the guard changing could be built up for bout 3, which could have gone to Bret, but with Steve Austin maybe souring the victory, so that sets up the pathway for SCSA anyway?

    • @user-li3fr8jl3b

@@user-li3fr8jl3b Second fiddle to Bret. Not unto himself. By 1994, if Bret was 1, Shawn was 2. But, by 1995, Shawn was 1.5. By 1996, they were on par. So, for Shawn to lose again in 1997, after the one high, would feel off? Especially at WrestleMania? Shawn deserved WM13, imo. Then, it plays further into his arrogant 'you're old news' attitude towards Bret, which could be leveraged for the next bout. For once, it's Bret who would have to prove to Shawn, that he can take him out. That sorta thing.

I'm surprised Bret was like of just "meh" about this match, I guess that's because his heart was set on regaining the title back from Shawn, something he didn't say here, which is in his book is about them promising Shawn a long title reign, much like they did Diesel and Hart before him, sadly he didn't draw, and alot of that wasn't even on Shawn, he didn't have alot of strong opponents to work with, and the whole thing with Vader (Who he didn't want to work with) would have been a great opponent for him but it didn't work out. Nash had the same problem in 1995, he didn't have enough strong heels to work against, which is part of the reason why his WWF title reign didn't go so well, not to mention business being down all around in 1995.

That may be, but he definitely was not keen on the idea of dropping the belt back to Bret. Or probably dropping it to anyone for that matter. Thus why the 'career ending' all of a sudden went out of it soon as he no longer had to, and it's also a big co-incidence that the back injury miraculously healed up soon as his contract was up and Vince no longer had to pay him. In all seriousness though, his 2002-10 run was arguably the best of his career. And, him and Bret leaving was probably what allowed Rock & Austin to shine like they did from late-98 on.

Bret was 5-1 in singles matches against HBK before Survivor Series 1997. He had beaten him clean multiple times between 1992-1995. Shawn owed Bret absolutely nothing. These rivalries don't have to be 50/50 booking 100% of the time. Triple H put over Batista 3x in a row. Undertaker put over Kane 3x in a row in 2010 because up to that point, Undertaker was also something like 5-1 against Kane having dominated their prior rivalries. Timing is everything and Bret was leaving the company while DX was a counter to the NWO. But Bret treated this as a real championship, and he disrespected the business, and it's shameful being the son of Stu Hart. You go out on your back. You don't get to put a bunch of caveats and hedges on it. I will only lose to this guy, in this country, on this night, when you only have days left at the company. You listen to your boss, and he had the chance to give Shawn and DX a mega rub and extra heel heat in Canada on his way out, and he refused. The same thing he's been crying about Hulk Hogan not doing for him for 30 years (and make no mistake, Hogan absolutely should've put Bret over at SummerSlam 1993, I'm only pointing out Bret's hypocrisy.). Now Bret is lying claiming it wasn't about losing to Shawn in Canada when there's video evidence on TH-cam of him saying it on a Canadian TV show that that's exactly what it was about. He's even taken to throwing his dead brother in law under the bus to take all the credit for SummerSlam 1992, wildly exaggerating the state Davey was in and claiming it was a 45 minute match instead of the 24 it actually was. Bret thinks that every match in his career is his best match, and emphasis on HIS best match, not the other guy's. So sad to see what Bret's reduced to.

Not just with Bret but for WWF as a whole 97 was the best year. Creatively on the mic and in the ring it just seemed thats where not only turned the corner but peakes and the WWF was able to ride that creat through the attitude era.
Mick got over with those sitdown Jim Ross interviews. Pillman was gold on the mic. Austin was peaking, Michaels was strung out on the junk but he could still go. Sid and Taker were both hot. LOD was back and over. The heel Godwins are pretty underrated.
Chyna came in and just looked so different and was over almost instantly and HHH was able to get a ton of heat.

And it also proves that the wrestling in the ring was far superior than any storyline. Think about it today’s age uses storylines to turn people good to bad, bad good but Brett hart was so good. He used his wrestling to do it.

Shawn made the ratings stay great, dont know what Brett is smoking. HBK mania was everywhere before Shawn retired from injury. WCW just did better & had more stars plus better story lines on a whole for awhile.

I dont remember a single thing during 1995 or 1996 that didnt include bret hart. Shawns supposed best years were still unmemorable which proves why the WCW took over right when they handed HBK the torch. However, 1993 and 1994 were dominated by the hitman, even the retarded PWI scale says so which just proves even more how big bret was and how big of a draw he was, although not on hogan or austins level, but definitely the biggest draw out of guys like diesel, hbk and taker during 1993-1996

Gosh why do we keep hearing his damn grievances, it's a broken record already! time to move on Already.
How meny times do we have to go through his bitterness and past.
    It's tiring and boring already.
Okay Bret we've heard this again and again...meanwhile Shawn Michaels has moved on well the Marks hang on to the past and get angry over shit that never affect their lives personally.
Can we hear the man says positive things and reminisce about his great career moments.
There is a new regime now....just move on already.

So essentially Brett wanted to do the Kurt and Brock angle when they were claiming to be buddy’s but just one upping each other. I think it would’ve been great and bring out Michael’s comedic side a bit earlier in his career

Going to call it now. Bret's full of shit because this is the first time ANYONE heard this part of the story. Before that, he claimed he found out weeks before Mania

I'll give Shawn this, at least he owns up to his behavior in the 90's. Bret on the other hand still talks like a jilted lover who can't get over being dumped for someone else.

I work night shift and I have a lot of ass time at work and it gets pretty boring. I love pulling Bret hart interviews and I can listen to him talk and tell stories all night long. It’s amazing how down to earth and fan interactive he is. He truly loves wrestling. A genuinely good guy!

@chuckbuskee I think he is honest about how he feels but he is less than honest about his own mistakes and mishaps. Little to no accountability.
