- Ikeshima or Ikejima (Japanese: 池島), also sometimes listed as Ike Island, is an island in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Initially within the borders of Kamiura village, from 1955 until its merger with the city of Nagasaki in 2005, it was part of Sotome municipality.
Thousands of coal miners who lived on the island were formerly employed there, representing the vast majority of its population. The coal mines opened in 1959 and closed in 2001. after 2001 everyone who lived on the island also moved out leaving everything behind..

I just watched this amazing video and I enjoyed everything. My favorite parts were the cats greeting in main street and what really got me was the mother in the box with kittens. I really hope that they were rescued.

Hey Josh not sure if it's something you can do but is there any chance there's a local rehab shelter for those poor kitties? Maybe if a rescue organization knew about them they could be helped?

This was awesome. Except the poor kitties. I would have definitely taken the mom and her babies back to the mainland with me. Someone would have taken them and nursed them for rescue. So so sad. Cats are my favorite animal. I’d have 100 if I could. Regardless, great explore!!

Did the mother cat and her kittens get rescued 😢. I felt so sad for her, and all the other stray cats left to fend for themselves 😢😢

I wish they could all be rescued but unfortunately I'm just not sure the resources are there with the few people that are left and it being an island I'm not sure its very accessible for any rescue groups to come in to help them poor babies😢 I could be very wrong though. Hey Josh, you’ll be alright. You were talking about Final Destination. I know what you mean. I had some real life experiences that had me feeling as though it was hunting me, like something was walking on my grave. Seriously I had escaped death a few times in my life and a couple times were twice in one day. I had experienced some over all general anxiety, I absolutely hate those feelings, as a result of my experiences, and then I made the mistake of seeing that show. Slick move heh? Yeah, that damned movie got to me for a grip too.
One way to rid those feelings is to do something for other living being and that is what you will be doing by contacting a no kill shelter. You guys are good men. Thank you.

Hey Josh, seeing all of those stray cats breaks my heart. I'm currently feeding some strays around my home. I wish I could take all of them, but I just can't afford to right now. 😿
The sad thing is the shelters, pounds and rescues in the U.S. are all over capacity right now. I think it's because of Covid. If you (anyone) can rescue, foster or adopt just even one dog, cat, rabbit, horse, ect you would be helping out.

I’m confused by this. You said that it closed down in 2001 but i was reading about it and it says this “ Mitsubishi officially closed the mine in January 1974, and the island was cleared of inhabitants on 20 April.” But i clearly see proof of people there in the early 2000s. Can someone clarify this for me? Thank you

Just to help calm you Josh about the Cat and her kittens in the box in the hospital, she may have had her kittens elsewhere and moved them there to keep her babies safe from predators, mother cats are practically good at hiding their babies to keep them safe :) But I go agree that all the cats need to be rescued especially if they're ill :(
What I don't get is why can't animal rescue or anyone rescue the cats, I could if I had a away to rescue them.

Great to rebuild it for poor or homless and I'm sure lots of people would love to live on the island I use to drive 40 mins to work from my farmlet so 30 min to get boat to work is nothing great footage

Cat give birth in boxes all the time. It's a closed, safe space. If you can rescue them, do it. But if not, the kittens looked old enough and they may be ok. They might be out of the danger zone! I know I'm late, and you already did or did not rescue them 😂 I love them though! ❤

In final destination, it was a fishing lure that fell in his mouth which honestly shouldn't have been up there. And he didn't choke to death on it. The assistant pulled it out just in time. The kid died when a giant pane of glass fell on him and smushed him. Kid's name was Tim.

Unfortunately I don't think the few residents left have the money or resources to feed all those cats. I think they are just left to survive on their own.

I have just recently found your channel through Omargosh's Alone series and i'm really enjoying your Japan series.
In reference to the cats in the box, Cat's are great hunters so the mother will hunt rats mice birds etc for herself and the kittens will feed from her. There really very resilient creatures

It's beautiful that the government of Japan and their people know that you do this respectfully and educationally, they know that you actually are supporting their country and culture. In the late 1990s, following a series of accidents and stiff competition from imported coal, Ikeshima's mining activities slowed down. Despite government aid, the mine finally closed in 2001. The 2,500 employees who were still working there were all made redundant and left the island.

10:20 Your statement about the island not being meant for families is inaccurate. All the facilities in the island, except for the actual mines, mine trains, and work areas, were meant for the families.
If you knew about the other Nagasaki abandoned coal island, the infamous Hashima aka Gunkanjima, you would know it was a vibrant city for the miners AND their families, with schools, sports and leisure facilities, such as shopping mall, public bathhouse, theatre, etc. The only workers who couldn’t live on Hashima with their families were the thousands of Korean men who were taken from the Korean Peninsula, against their will, enslaved, and forced into the harshest working and living conditions.

I am currently on Teshima island, restoring abandoned Japanese gardens. Population of the island has dropped from 10,000 to 600. It is such a shame that the young Japanese don’t care about island life. They want the excitement of the big cities.
